Disney's Mary Poppins is RACIST! UK Changes the Movie's Rating?!

Disney's Mary Poppins is a racist movie, according to the board that rates movies in the UK. The crime? Using an outdated slang term for South African people and Mary Poppins wearing "blackface" during the 'Step in Time' number. Stop giggling, they're serious. Then we talk about other movies and shows that Disney themselves have found to be "problematic" in current year. ➡️ Tip Jar and Fan Support: http://ClownfishSupport.com ➡️ Official Merch Store: http://ShopClownfish.com ➡️ Official Website: http://ClownfishTV.com ➡️ Audio Edition: https://open.spotify.com/show/6qJc5C6OkQkaZnGCeuVOD1 ➡️ Gaming News: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A7VIqE3r5MQkFgL9nifNc Additional Context: In the ever-evolving landscape of cultural sensitivity and historical reassessment, even the most cherished cinematic classics are not immune to scrutiny. The recent buzz around Disney's "Mary Poppins" highlights this ongoing cultural reckoning. The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), responsible for rating movies in the UK, has raised eyebrows and ruffled some feathers by labeling "Mary Poppins" as potentially problematic or offensive due to its use of outdated slang and imagery. The specific criticisms leveled at "Mary Poppins" revolve around two main points. First, the movie supposedly uses an outdated slang term for South African people, which by today's standards is considered derogatory and insensitive. Second, and perhaps more controversially, is the accusation of Mary Poppins wearing "blackface" during the iconic "Step in Time" chimney sweep number. This claim hinges on the scene where Mary, Bert, and the chimney sweeps have their faces covered in soot as they dance on the rooftops of London. Some interpret this as a form of blackface, a historically racist practice where performers darkened their skin to caricature African-Americans. Before you spit out your tea in disbelief, it's worth noting that these interpretations are part of a broader trend of reevaluating media through a contemporary lens. This isn't to say that "Mary Poppins," a film beloved by generations for its whimsy, magic, and supercalifragilisticexpialidocious charm, was created with malicious intent. However, it does underscore the growing awareness and sensitivity to racial stereotypes and historical contexts in which these movies were made. Disney itself has not been shy about confronting the more problematic aspects of its legacy. In recent years, the entertainment giant has taken steps to acknowledge and address the racially insensitive content in some of its older films and shows. For instance, upon the launch of its streaming service, Disney+, the company included disclaimers on certain classic titles, noting that they contain "outdated cultural depictions." These disclaimers aim to contextualize the content for modern audiences, acknowledging that what was once considered acceptable may no longer be so. Other Disney classics have come under similar scrutiny. "Dumbo" (1941), for example, has been criticized for its depiction of African-American stereotypes through the character of the crows. "The Aristocats" (1970) and "Peter Pan" (1953) also feature characters and scenes that perpetuate racial stereotypes. In response, Disney has moved some of these titles into a special section on Disney+ with restricted access for children's profiles, ensuring that viewing these films is accompanied by a conversation about their historical context and the evolution of societal norms. ERIC GOLDBERG - Aladdin “The Genie” This was a live recording with Disney Studios.. ERIC GOLDBERG (Animator) is renowned for his role in creating and supervising the animation of the Genie character for “Aladdin,” for directing “Pocahontas” and the “Rhapsody in Blue” and “Carnival of the Animals” sequences for “Fantasia/2000,” along with numerous other achievements. He is the recipient of the 2011 Winsor McCay award from ASIFA-Hollywood for lifetime achievement in animation. Among his recent work, he created new animation for the Cirque du Soleil show, “Drawn to Life,” at Disney Springs in Orlando, Fla. He has also contributed animation to a variety of projection shows and special projects for Disney Parks and Experiences around the world. Goldberg's animation knowledge started early, creating flip books at age six and moving on to making prize-winning Super 8 films from the age of 13. After attending Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, majoring in illustration, Goldberg became a full-time assistant animator to legendary director Richard Williams on “Raggedy Ann and Andy.” He went on to direct countless TV spots for Williams in London before coming to Los Angeles to serve as director of animation on the Emmy®-winning “Ziggy's Gift.” Returning to London, he co-founded Pizazz Pictures, a commercial studio with a world-wide clientele. Goldberg joined Walt Disney Animation Studios in 1990 to supervise the animation of the wise-cracking Genie in “Aladdin.” He then co-directed “Pocahontas” (1995), and animated the feisty satyr Phil in “Hercules” (1997). His directing stints on “Fantasia/2000” were a labor of love and were inspired by both George Gershwin and the legendary theatrical caricaturist Al Hirschfeld, who served as artistic consultant. Other Disney credits include “The Princess and the Frog” (for which he supervised Louis, the trumpet-playing alligator, earning him his third Annie Award for best character animation), “Winnie the Pooh” (supervising Rabbit and the “Backson Song” sequence), and “Wreck-It Ralph” (helping to flesh out the character of King Candy). He also served as head of animation for 2013's Oscar®-nominated short, “Get a Horse!” and recently was the director, writer, and a supervising animator for the animated shorts “Disney Presents Goofy in How to Stay at Home.” Goldberg and wife, Susan, a talented artist and art director in her own right, have two daughters, Rachel and Jenny, who both work as artists in the entertainment industry.

Shang-Chi earned a total of $34.7 million domestically according to Box Office Mojo in its second box office weekend falling only 54% from it's premiere weekend. Shang-Chi has now earned $144.5M domestically and $259M worldwide. In comparison Black Widow fell 68% in its second box office weekend but benefited from a healthy $60M from Disney+ premiere sales in its premiere weekend.   Other Disney second-weekend drops have been varied, with “Jungle Cruise” shedding 55%, “Cruella” 49% and “Free Guy” 35%. Universal's “F9,” another pandemic box office success, opened to $70 million in June and dropped 57% to $30.1 million in its second frame.   Pre-pandemic Marvel releases have traditionally held well in their second weekends: “Avengers: Endgame” declined by 59%, “Captain Marvel” by 56%, “Thor: Ragnarok” by 54%, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" by 56%, “Doctor Strange” by 50% and “Ant-Man” by 57%. “Black Panther” enjoyed the most slight second-weekend drop in 2018, with just 45% after opening to a massive $202 million over Presidents Day weekend.   The strength of Shang-Chi's Labor Day weekend opening seems to have inspired Disney to commit to debuting its remaining theatrical releases exclusively in theaters for the rest of the year, including Marvel Studios' Eternals. Disney announced that the rest of its domestic release slate for the year will honor a theatrical window ranging from a minimum of 30-45 days per film although the 30 day window only applies to Encanto according to the exclusive reported by Variety. The term “minimum” seems to point to the fact that Disney could extend that 30-45 day window should they prove to be hits and there is an audience to attend in person. Marvel Announces Four Unknown Films Scheduled for 2024 https://collider.com/new-marvel-movies-coming-in-2024/   Walt Disney Studios has updated its upcoming release schedule, which now includes four untitled Marvel films dated for 2024. These include newly announced films scheduled for February 16th, May 3rd, July 26th, and November 8th.   Marvel has previously announced all of its movies on the way through Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, scheduled for May 5, 2023. After Guardians, there are still three other untitled Marvel films planned for the year, however, the addition of four more unknown Marvel films in 2024 and their release dates is entirely new.   Possible films to fill those slots that are currently in development and without a known release schedule include Fantastic Four Deadpool 3 Blade Avengers-Level Team up to end the phase (not confirmed in development) Could be linked to Russo Brothers story from last week Captain America Sequel Possible X-Men   MCU – Non-Marvel Studios   Sony Won't Send Any Major Blockbusters Directly to Streaming Platforms https://www.cbr.com/sony-no-major-films-to-streaming/ Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Tony Vinciquerra is insisting Spider-Man: Far From Home, Venom: Let There Be Carnage and other blockbusters will retain their theater exclusivity window and not go straight-to-streaming.   "There is a higher bar theatrically to get films into theaters so you will probably not see as many films going directly to theaters," Vinciquerra said during a media conference. He conceded that some of Sony's smaller films might not be viable for theatrical release in the current climate but promised, "We have about 12 to 15 major films a year distributed to theaters and will do the same going forward."   Vinciquerra pointed out the rise in piracy rates since other studios decided to implement day-and-date streaming releases, labeling it "a big concern" moving forward. The executive noted that Sony is in a unique position as it does not have a streaming service of its own, instead acting as an "arms dealer" in the ongoing streaming wars, able to put its content up for auction. He was quick to clarify, "But you won't see our major films go that way."   Sony recently changed the name of its Spider-Man franchise from the Sony Universe of Marvel Characters to Sony's Spider-Man Universe, suggesting it has larger plans for the web-slinger moving forward. With rumors hinting at a live-action Spider-Verse crossover, the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home could potentially bridge the gap between Sony's animated and live-action Spider-Man franchises by incorporating Miles Morales.   Disney+   Marvel Studios' Hawkeye Official Trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VYb3B1ETlk   What If…? Visiting the Disney Parks at Halloween can be a lot of fun, but there are some things to know before you go. This week we talk with Patty Holliday to get the scoop on tips for Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party and visiting Walt Disney World and Disneyland around Halloween. ON THE PODCAST 00:18 - Talking about Tamara’s recent trip 14:11 - Talking with Patty 15:50 - Disneyland and Disney World at Halloween 18:55 - Patty’s Favorite things about Disneyland at Halloween 21:28 - What else is going on in the parks at Halloween 24:00 - Events that need a special ticket 31:13 - Tips for Halloween party 37:25 - Halloween night at the resorts 39:08 - Food at Halloween tips 40:20 - Other Disney tips 43:33 - Favorite travel gear 47:23 - Tip of the week ABOUT PATTY HOLLIDAY Patty Holliday is a wife, mother of four, and theme park lover who loves early mornings. She hasn’t found a sunrise that disappoints her yet! Find her in the DC Metro area or anywhere frequent flyer miles or her trusty Honda Odyssey takes her. She blogs at noguiltlife.com Follow Patty on Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and Facebook. DISNEY HALLOWEEN TIPS Disneyland Halloween Party tickets sell out very quickly. So if you are looking to go, be sure to look into tickets in advance. They tend to start selling the tickets around July. If your kids have allergies, Disney World offers a special bag for trick or treating that involves tokens that can be redeemed at specific location for candy and crafts. If you do not plan on going to the Halloween party at the parks you should still be aware of the dates that this is going on in the fall season. The Magic Kingdom park will close at 7pm for regular guests. You don’t need a park ticket to go to the party, so this will be a great opportunity to spend your day outside of the park. With the party ticket you can get into the park three hours early for the event and enjoy some park time. If you are planning to eat at a restaurant before going to the Halloween Party, be sure to make your reservation early so that you are done eating in time to enjoy all of the Halloween fun there is to offer. FAVORITE TRAVEL GEAR Patty loves to wear her Sanuk or Oofos sandals for comfortable walking and her Headsweats visor for sun protection. TIP OF THE WEEK When you are dressing your kids in costumes, keep in mind that they will be getting in and out of rides and walking around alot! Things like long capes and bulky costumes can make that tough. MENTIONED ON THE PODCAST Allergy friendly Disney trick or treating FOLLOW US AND SPREAD THE WORD!
