Then there are two more chapters for us from the account written by George Kneale about 'Voyage of the Odin's Raven', and it's David Fisher who reads that out. We hear some history in Manx in Claare ny Gael this time, about a ship called the 'Parkfield'. They were saying that she was the finest vessel that was ever built in the Island at the time she was launched, 8th January 1833. Unfortunately, there was but a short history of this vessel, which was broken on Conister early in the morning of 3rd February in the same year. Everyone was saved, but this was the last time that Sir William Hillary was a member of the Douglas lifeboat crew.
In celebration of Noo Breesha, St Bridget, we hear about the custom associated with households vying to attract the saint to lodge with them overnight, which would bring good luck on the household for the rest of the year. We hear an abridged version of the story as told by Kathleen Killip, read by Ian Cottier. In Manx, we hear the short history of what was reckoned to be the finest vessel ever launched in the Island up to that point, the Parkfield - launched 8th January 1833, left Douglas at 9.00pm on Friday 2nd February, returned to Douglas because of a sudden storm, but was driven on to Conister. It was another stirring rescue by Douglas lifeboat, including, for the final time, Sir William Hillary. All souls were saved, but the Parkfield was lost on Saturday 3rd February 1833. The debate surrounding Parkfield school in Birmingham and wider discussion on the role of sex and relationship classes within educational programmes, are just the latest incidences of schools becoming a battlefield for the culture wars. Starting with developments in the 1870s when the state intervention in schooling in England & Wales became more pronounced, James Tooley explores the impact of the ethos of state control over education right up to today’s controversies over Relationship and Sex EducationLecturer James Tooley, professor of educational entrepreneurship and policy, University of Buckingham; author, The Beautiful TreeTalking Points in this podcastIn the 1870s, private non-profit and private for-profit schools made up nearly all the educational establishments, educating 95 per cent of children.State intervention in education reflected a desire to push forward a particular set of values, creating an early instance of the education culture wars.Schools were used to also keep the working class in their own station as opposed to increasing their social mobility. An affordable grassroots private school movement that would create schools of high quality at half the cost of state education is possible.BibliographyThe Beautiful Tree: a personal journey into how the world’s poorest people are educating themselves, James Tooley, Cato Institute, 2013Education and the State: A Study in Political Economy, Edwin G West, 3rd revised edition, 1994THE ACADEMY 2019In the context of today’s instrumental approaches to knowledge, The Academy summer school is a modest attempt to demonstrate the value of scholarship, and of the worth of the university as a place of free enquiry dedicated to the pursuit of truth.IDEAS MATTER PODCASTIdeas Matter is a podcast that takes the most important issues of our times and explores the ideas and intellectual trends that have shaped where we are today. You can subscribe and listen to Ideas Matter on iTunes, Podbean or SoundCloud. As an assistant headteacher, Andrew Moffat has introduced a policy promoting diversity at Parkfield community school in Birmingham. His No Outsiders message teaches children to welcome those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender as well as people of any race, colour or religion. It’s been a huge success - parents, teachers and governors support Andrew’s work despite 98% of the school’s pupils being Muslim. In this episode Will and Chris travel to the school to meet him and learn how his efforts to spread LGBT awareness and understanding haven’t always been appreciated: Andrew left his previous school after parents complained about him telling the children he was gay. He tells Will and Chris what he learned from this experience and how he convinced Parkfield’s parents that children can be taught about Britain’s anti-discrimination laws without undermining their religious beliefs. Plus - listeners tell us their memories of school, Chris has been finding out about surrogacy and Will remembers a very awkward evening involving a video of Neighbours and a dog basket.
