In this episode recorded live on November 12 at the American Society of Cinematographers Clubhouse in Los Angeles, director Patricia Riggen speaks with four of auteur Steve McQueen's collaborators on his World War II drama Blitz for Apple Original Films: production designer Adam Stockhausen, editor Peter Sciberras, and supervising sound editors James Harrison and Paul Cotterell. The film recreates events from Germany's devastating bombardment of London in 1940-41, while also following a mother and son trying to find each other amid the mayhem. “We have to keep retelling these stories, because we keep making the same mistakes,” Harrison says. “We have to keep reminding ourselves of the terror of the past.”

This week we welcome Checco Varese, our friend of the podcast and 4th time guest! The Hulu series Dopesick tells the complex story of the opioid epidemic through multiple points of view over its eight episode arc. Cinematographer Checco Varese, ASC shot every single episode, and recently earned his first Emmy award in 2022 for Outstanding Cinematography for a Limited or Anthology Series. Checco decided to approach the story and its characters as a series of four concentric plot circles. At the center of Dopesick is the Appalachian mining town and the small town doctor (Michael Keaton) who serves the community there; then the prosecutors trying to nail Purdue Pharma; the pharmaceutical company reps who are riding high on drug sales; and finally the Sackler family, who knowingly misled everyone about the addictive nature of OxyContin. He met with showrunner Danny Strong and director of the first two episodes, Barry Levinson, to discuss the look of each section. For the small Appalachian town, Checco was influenced by the look of the film The Deer Hunter, and used the cool blues of winter light. The Insider was a reference for the storyline of the DEA and Virginia prosecutors, and they embraced the use of florescent lights and conference rooms. To symbolize the wealth and excess of the Sackler family and the Purdue Pharma sales people, Checco liked the bright colors and opulence of Eyes Wide Shut. Since it's a character-driven story dramatizing true events, Checco knew that Dopesick was about being a fly on the wall, while keeping everything engaging and compelling, so he wanted to make sure that each film reference still felt subtle, natural and realistic. Checco feels that lighting for film and television can be like poetry. Most of the mood and atmosphere is made with lighting, with the camera movements serving as the film's punctuation marks: commas, exclamation points, or periods. As a cinematographer, Checco loves to go deep into the project and usually feels passionate about what he's doing, so that his soul is on the screen. He's had the opportunity to work with his wife, director Patricia Riggen, on several projects, and they also worked together on a few episodes of Dopesick. Checco says that when they're on a show together, they get very absorbed in their work, and there's no “off” switch, but he loves having that relationship with her. For Dopesick, he was excited to work on a series that was truthful and honest, and he enjoys telling important stories that matter. Dopesick is currently on Hulu. We're celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month with a special episode about the film, La Misma Luna (Under the Same Moon). Our friend Rosa joins us to discuss this 2007 movie.
Director of photography Checco Varese's most ambitious work yet can be seen in the gripping new limited series, Dopesick. The series is set to premiere Oct. 13 on Hulu. The eight, eye-opening episodes of the highly-anticipated show center around the opioid epidemic that is ravaging America and the corrupt Big Pharma, which created it. From the perspective of a distressed Virginia mining community to the hallways of the DEA, this true story is inspired by the New York Times bestselling book by Beth Macy. A teaser trailer is available here. The series—starring and executive produced by Michael Keaton—is directed by Barry Levinsion, Michael Cuesta, Patricia Riggen and Danny Strong (also credited as creator, writer and executive producer). As sole director of photography, Varese photographed all eight episodes of Dopesick with the Sony Venice and Zeiss Lenses. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/followingfilms/support

In this episode, Rosa and Cat highlight the groundbreaking Mexican director, Patricia Riggen. In January 2019, the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative released a report analyzing the gender, race and age of directors across 1,200 top films from 2007 to 2018. Out of 1,200 films, only one film was directed by a Latina director, Patricia Riggen. We examine three of her films: UNDER THE SAME MOON (LA MISMA LUNA) (2007) Single mother Rosario (Kate del Castillo) leaves her young son Carlitos (Adrian Alonso) in the care of his grandmother and illegally crosses the border into the U.S. She hopes to eventually make a better life for herself and her son but toils in a dead-end job as a cleaning lady in Los Angeles. When Carlitos' grandmother passes away some years later, he begins a difficult and dangerous journey to join her. GIRL IN PROGRESS (2012) Grace (Eva Mendes) is a single mom who is often too busy juggling her job, bills and two love interests (Matthew Modine, Eugenio Derbez) to pay much attention to her daughter, Ansiedad (Cierra Ramirez). Inspired by the coming-of-age stories her English teacher (Patricia Arquette) introduces in class, Ansiedad decides to skip adolescence and jump-start her life without her mother. But, when the misguided plan unravels, Ansiedad and Grace must both learn that growing up means acting your age. THE 33 (2015) Disaster strikes on Aug. 5, 2010, as a copper and gold mine collapses in Chile, trapping 33 men underground. With more than 2,000 feet of rock in their way, members of a rescue team work tirelessly for 69 days to save the seemingly doomed crew. Beneath the rubble, the miners begin an epic quest to survive, contending with suffocating heat and the need for food and water. With family, friends and the rest of the world watching, it becomes a race against time and a true test of the human spirit. _________ LATINX LENS RECOMMEND REVIEW BLACK GOD, WHITE DEVIL (1964) During yet another drought-blighted year in the sertão, the arid hinterland of the north-east Brazil, ranch hand Manoel kills his boss after a dispute over money. I miracoli stanno dappertutto. Perché la fede come apertura all'altro ci costituisce, ci dà forma, e ci dà vita.
Acclaimed cinematographer Checco Varese, ASC’s recently released feature It: Chapter Two is one of the most highly anticipated films of the year. It: Chapter Two, (from Warner Brothers and New Line) hits theaters Sep. 6. It is the eagerly-awaited sequel to It – director Andy Muschietti’s blockbuster adaptation of author Stephen King’s classic horror masterpiece by the same name. Within hours of its debut, It: Chapter Two’s trailer, alone, generated millions of views and sent fans and social media into a frenzy. Stephen King himself took to Twitter to praise the film. The saga’s latest chapter finds the self-proclaimed ‘Losers’ Club’ returning to their hometown of Derry, Maine after 27 years to defeat Pennywise – the shape-shifting, dancing demonic clown portrayed in terrifying fashion by Bill Skarsgård. All grown up and ready for serious battle, the all-star cast also features Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, Isaiah Mustafa, and Bill Hader. For Muschietti, who stepped back into the director’s role, tapping veteran cinematographer Checco Varese to shoot the sequel was a natural choice. “Checco and I go back a long time. We made commercials together a decade ago in Spain, as well as a little short film, and a pilot, too. Our communication has always been great, not only because of the shorthand coming from our cultural background and language, (I was born and raised in Argentina, while he is Peruvian but lived in Buenos Aires for years) but also because we speak a similar visual language. Just a few words were enough to express my vision of this film to him, and immediately an effervescent creative dialogue began. For a cinematographer, working with a director who is very visual can be a blessing or a curse. That’s why Checco is such a trooper. His patience is monumental, and his support unconditional,” compliments the director. He also cites Varese’s background as a war camera person as a huge asset, “That might explain his versatility and ability to adapt to the circumstances. In production, you have to change horses many times as you’re crossing the river, and when that happens, you want someone like Checco on your side, always supportive, loyal, and ready to share his visual creativity.” In addition to his collaborations with Muschietti, Varese has also partnered on several features with director Patricia Riggen including, Miracles From Heaven, Under the Same Moon, and the The 33, which starred Antonio Banderas and Juliette Binoche and is based on the real-life story of 33 miners trapped in a Chilean mine. Varese also enjoys a reputation for being the unofficial ‘pilot guy,’ lensing more than two dozen season starters – nineteen of which have been picked up for series including, True Blood; The Strain; The Returned; The Fosters; Colony; and The Defenders. He once again partnered with Riggen for the CBS’s pilot, Surveillance. His other credits include several episode of the first season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan for Amazon, and the sci-fi thriller Replicas featuring Keanu Reeves and Thomas Middleditch.

BEHIND THE LENS guests just keep getting better and this week the proof is in the pudding as film critic debbie elias welcomes special guests writer/director/producer Michael Damian talking his latest film, HIGH STRUNG, and actress/producer Courtney Daniels is on hand with RESCUE DOGS. Many of you remember Michael Damian for his starring turn as Danny Ramalotti on the long running soap opera "The Young and the Restless" or, for his string of #1 hits on the pop/rock charts. But what you may not know is Michael is also a successful writer/director and producer. Working with Michael as co-writer/co-producer is his wife Janeen and together they have combined their talents and pieces of their own life's journeys for one of the most beautiful and emotionally fulfilling sensory experiences of the year with HIGH STRUNG. Dance and music come together in a poetic explosion of beauty under Michael's guiding eye and he joins me at the 12 minute mark of the show live from the TCL Chinese Theatre where he's readying for tomorrow's world premiere. You can hear the excitement in his voice as he talks about the challenges of lighting and camera choreography and the joy of serendipitous moments in shooting, not to mention his reaction to a very special alignment of the stars in connection with the film's release date of April 8th! At the 30 minute mark, we literally go to the dogs with actress and producer Courtney Daniels and her latest venture RESCUE DOGS. Just speaking with Courtney, you can hear the elation in her voice as she talks about working with some wonderful animals in this wholly entertaining family film. As a founder of Busted Buggy Entertainment, and its new distribution arm, Courtney also dons her producer's hat talking about producing challenges and considerations when working with animals. Plus, she fills us in on a very unique and heartfelt distribution campaign for the film unfolding across America starting April 1st. Filmmakers will find what Courtney has to say of particular interest while animal lovers and moviegoers will sit back and go "awwwww"! And we've got another exclusive clip for you with director Patricia Riggen talking about MIRACLES FROM HEAVEN. http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Fascinating doesn't begin to describe this week's BEHIND THE LENS and our fabulous guests as we hear from filmmakers Abner Pastoll, Laura Gabbert and Patricia Riggen! ABNER PASTOLL, writer/director/editor of the Hitchcockian-styled thriller ROAD GAMES, is with us live in the first half hour talking about his inspiration and vision and the hard filmmaking road less traveled for his journey making ROAD GAMES. Leaving no stone unturned in the production values of the film, hear Abner talk about cinematography, sound and scoring as integral components to the tonal bandwidth of the film as a whole. Documentarian LAURA GABBERT joins us at the half hour mark to talk about her latest film, CITY OF GOLD. A cultural journey of Los Angeles as seen through the eyes of acclaimed food critic Jonathan Gold, CITY OF GOLD is as much a travelogue of the hidden wonders and history of Los Angeles as it is insight into the thoughts and ruminations of Gold. Laura is live as she talks about striking gold with the making of CITY OF GOLD. And bookending the show are excerpts of film critic debbie elias' exclusive interview with director PATRICIA RIGGEN as she talks about the magic of making MIRACLES FROM HEAVEN. http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
