Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 72 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys discuss the next film in their Krzysztof Kieślowski series, Three Colours: Blue (1993). Moving right along into the trilogy that made Kieślowski a legend in the cinematic community, the director set out to make a trio of films based around the colors found in the French flag, the country to which he could get funding for the film. With Blue, we enter his first phase, liberty, and in the case of the film, a complex look into a woman recovery as she tries to go on living her life after a tragic car accident kills her husband and daughter. In turning cold on the world and everyone around her, Julie (Juliette Binoche in a masterful performance) slowly opens back up, and it is within the final act of the film we see her recover beyond her understandable, heartbreaking grief. It makes for a wonderful start to this important trilogy. Ryan and Jay break down their thoughts on the film, the idea of grief and how everyone handles it differently, the use of the color blue throughout the film, the balance of the loss of Julie's husband and daughter, the guy's thoughts on Binoche's career and what type of reality, trash television shows people are watching today. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 1h42m. The guys will be back next week to continue their series on the films of Krzysztof Kieślowski with a review of his film, Three Colours: White. You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. Music: MUSICALIFE, from Pond5 (intro) and “B-3” from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).

This week we talk about THE TASTE OF THINGS (2:05), which features many of Dave's loves: Juliette Binoche, French food, romance, and tobacco (Megan liked it, too). This deliberate romantic drama, about a gourmand (Benoît Magimel) and his gifted cook (Binoche), is directed by Trân Anh Hùng. It's beautifully photographed, meticulously staged, and it also is not for everyone. Then all three of us watched SCRAMBLED (18:13), a comedic drama written and directed by Leah McKendrick, who stars as Nelly, a 34-year-old woman who freezes her eggs while also taking stock of her life. This one had a range of reactions from the gang. And over on Patreon, we cover the 1968 Norman Jewison-directed THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR. If you're not a member, you may become on for $5 a month. There's a bonus episode each week (about 400-ish now), and we post monthly polls about which movies to watch. Please check it out!

"The Taste Of Things" had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the Palme d'Or and won the Best Director prize for Trần Anh Hùng. Starring Academy Award-winner Juliette Binoche and Benoît Magimel in two moving performances, few films have ever captured the love of cooking and what cooking can mean for love as exceptionally as this film has. Binoche and Anh Hùng were kind enough to spend some time talking with Dan Bayer and Giovanni Lago, respectively, about their work on the film, which is the French entry for Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards. Please take a listen to the interviews below and be sure to check out the film, which releases in the U.S. on February 9th, 2024, from IFC Films and is up for your consideration in all eligible categories at this year's Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress, and Best International Feature Film. Laura and Charles sit down with new friend, writer, and illustrator, Indigo Bailey (recently published in Kill Your Darlings, Island Magazine, and editor of Voiceworks) for the latest instalment of our long tradition of Diva Double Features. This time we take aim at one-miss Juliette Binoche. The latest, but not last, of this fabulous cohort of VP-adored women, is gently and thoroughly celebrated in this new edition. Laura gushes about the deeply evocative and kinda lesbian Clouds of Sils Maria (2014) while also wrestling with the high vs. low-brow casting of Chloë Grace Moretz. We rewind time to Binoche's early career, revisiting the deeply whimsical and still potent Mauvais Sang (1986), where in Paris, the new sexually transmitted virus STBO is ravaging the young and loveless sex-havers. Two movies. Three people. One rambling conversation. Each film is our first time watching them. We often go off-topic. Personal Shopper is a 2016 supernatural psychological thriller film written and directed by Olivier Assayas. The film stars Kristen Stewart as a young American woman in Paris who works as a personal shopper for a celebrity and tries to communicate with her deceased twin brother. Clouds of Sils Maria is a 2014 psychological drama film written and directed by Olivier Assayas, and starring Juliette Binoche, Kristen Stewart, and Chloë Grace Moretz. The film follows an established middle-aged actress (Binoche) who is cast as the older lover in a romantic lesbian drama opposite an upstart young starlet (Moretz). She is overcome with personal insecurities and professional jealousies—all while sexual tension simmers between her and her personal assistant (Stewart). The screenplay was written with Binoche in mind and incorporates elements from her life into the plot.

French filmmaker Claire Denis, whom I consider one of our greatest living directors, likes to play around with genre from time to time. Her latest picture is called Both Sides of the Blade, and if you read the ad copy it's being called a love triangle. Well, it's like no triangle I've ever seen. In fact, her editing strategies and her masterful use of music make the film seem as if it's going to turn into a scary suspense thriller at any moment. The story starts with Sara and Jean, a middle aged couple blissfully in love, played by Juliette Binoche and Vincent Lindon. Denis carefully establishes their intimacy in the beginning sequence where they're on vacation together. How satisfying it is to watch a director allowing her actors time to establish convincing, lived-in characters. This is the third time in a row that Binoche has starred in a Denis movie, and also Lindon's third time working with her. Denis' familiarity with her performers pays off with especially fine and nuanced work from these two. Returning to Paris, trouble begins right away when Sara on her way to work happens to see a man (played by Grégoire Colin) on a motorcycle. Later we see her overwhelmed with emotion, out of breath, saying the man's name, François, repeatedly in a tone that sounds more shocked than pleased. She tells Jean later that she saw François, and his reaction is muted. Gradually we learn that François is Sara's ex, and also Jean's former friend, whom neither of them has seen for ten years. A further element of mystery is introduced: Jean has finished serving ten years in prison, and is consequently having trouble finding work. For Denis, a story never happens separately from society or politics or ideas. In this story, Sara is the host of a radio show in which she interviews various figures in progressive and anti-colonial circles. There's no need for viewers to make too much of this—it's another way of establishing characters in a full-bodied fictional world. But it's also a reminder that there are many other things, and much worse problems, than the travails of personal relationships. So, François offers Jean a job. He hesitates, but Sara says it's fine. The private reactions, however, that we've seen her express when seeing François, contradict what she's telling Jean. And thus we embark on what I never thought of as a triangle while watching, because of the peculiar nature of this story. François seems almost like a demonic figure, since we never get inside him like we're allowed to get inside the two leads. Was he responsible in some way for Jean going to prison? What we do see quite vividly is that a duality is at play in Sara's heart, a duality of which she herself is only vaguely aware. The emotional agonies that Sara and Jean put themselves through as the film goes on are the fulfillment of all Denis' suspense film clues. It's especially brilliant in the case of Juliette Binoche, who takes us on a dark journey into some strange complications of desire. The film doesn't answer all our plot questions. It does show how much deeper and more mysterious the relationships between women and men are than we usually care to acknowledge. Both Sides of the Blade presents, in its stylish way, that mystery.
This week we review the new season of For All Mankind, new limited series The Staircase, and Now and Then, and give you a heads up about the reboot of Queer as Folk, and two new stand-up shows: An LGBTQ+ Celebration, and Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin: Ladies Night Live. *Please note, we mistakenly called the Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin special "Girls Night Live," when in fact, it is called "Ladies Night Live."

In this exclusive interview, Academy Award Best Actress winner Juliette Binoche gets deep into the psychology of self-deception, self-acceptance, social media, aging and more, as it relates to her latest film, WHO YOU THINK I AM, a romantic cyber-drama turned psychological thriller. In the film she plays a dual role, that of Claire, a mature literature professor, author and single mother of two teen boys - and Clara, her 24-year old online avatar who engages in a steamy relationship with a young photographer. Binoche is in conversation with Landmark's Margot Gerber. The film is now playing on the big screen in Landmark Theatres. Distributed by Cohen Media Group. In a kind of alternate universe version of Trois Colours: Bleu, Juliette Binoche finds herself once more playing a Parisian woman, with an artistic bent, having lost her husband and daughter, navigating a second life in a search for new love and purpose. Except that this time no one is dead; she's just divorced. And rather than mourning her way from one brilliant visual to another to satisfy a decidedly male cinephile's gaze, Claire Denis directs Binoche (playing Isabelle) and a sequence of her self-absorbed lovers, with realism and nuanced perspective. Binoche, now in middle age, is no less beautiful and commanding though, but now with a tender vulnerability that peeks through her armor of confidence and independent charm. If you'd like to watch ahead for next week's film, we will be reviewing and discussing Terence Young's Dr. No (1962).
This week we review new films The Truth, Tenet and Bad Impulse, as well as new Australian political drama Total Control. We give you a heads up about the new movie, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and offer a giveaway for the new movie The Stand-In.
In this episode, I talk about Olivier Assayas's 2014 film "Clouds of Sils Maria." It's a complex film starring Juliette Binoche as Maria Enders, an actress who shot to stardom in her youth when she acted in a play about an older woman who is seduced by a younger woman. 20 years ago, she played the younger woman but now, in a revival of the play, she is set to play the older woman. This role brings up her fears about aging. Kristen Stewart stars alongside Binoche as an assistant to Maria Enders. To me, the heart of the film is the complicated relationship between these two women and the different ways they see life and the world. I also think this is a fascinating film about the process that an actress goes through to get into character. I talk about all that and much more. This time, we review the robotic crime thriller Ghost in the Shell movie (2017) and in today's episode we explore if this version of Tokyo exists in an alternate reality, how much does this film borrow from Blade Runner, and did Ghost in the Shell really start the conversation of “whitewashing” in Hollywood? Let's dig in…. Ghost in the Shell movie cast Directed by Rupert Sanders: Prior to taking on Ghost in the Shell, Sanders was well-known for directing Snow White and the Huntsmen which was a darker take on the classic fairy tale starring Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth. However, Sanders' personal life would be thrown into disarray following leaked photos of him and fellow actress Kristen Stewart carrying on an illicit affair. Scarlett Johansson as Major: Johansson was a well-established star at the time of this film having appeared in multiple films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Margot Robbie passed on this role in order to star as Harley Quinn in the DC Extended Universe and Johansson signed on for a cool $10 million payday. See our review on the film Her where we discussed Johansson as well. Pilou Asbæk as Batou: Game of Thrones fans will recognize Asbæk after he appeared in the last several seasons of the show, but has mostly appeared in Danish cinema since he came on the scene beginning around 2009. Juliette Binoche as Dr. Ouelet: Binoche has been an acclaimed actress for over 30 years and rose to international prominence following her Academy Award performance in the war epic The English Patient and then alongside Johnny Depp in Chocolat. There's a noted lack of female diversity in the film and Binoche offers a sort of maternal care and identity to Major throughout the film. Michael Carmen Pitt as Kuze: Fans of the show Boardwalk Empire will recognize Pitt following his performance as Jimmy on the show for which he earned numerous award nominations. However, there are times in the film that we forget he's even in the film. There are long stretches where he is not seen and he isn't a constant presence as he is initially feared to be. Also Starring: “Beat” Takashi Kitano as Aramaki Chin Han as Togusa Peter Ferdinando as Cutter Ghost in the Shell Manga: From the Page to the Screen Ghost in the Shell is actually the English name for a Japanese manga and entertainment franchise that was originally known as Mobile Armored Riot Police. The manga series ran for a year and a half during 1989 to the near end of 1990. The plot of the manga and the film remain mostly unchanged; an elite police squadron named Section 9 is tasked with hunting down and eliminating cyber criminals in a cyber-punk dystopian version of Japan in the near future. The top cop in this unit is Major Motoko Kusanagi was anglicized for the film to Mira Killian, but the original name was kept for the human whose brain is placed into the robotic shell. The English version of the manga didn't make its way to America until 1995 when Dark Horse Comics published a one volume translation of the manga with an anime adaptation premiering in the same year with a sequel that followed in 2004. Beginning in 2002, a television cartoon was developed consisting of two season and 26 episodes. Much of the imagery showcased in the films and the cartoon do make its way into the film due to Rupert Sanders being a self-proclaimed “mega fan” of the series. In 2008, DreamWorks Pictures and Steven Spielberg acquired the rights to produce a live action film adaptation, but Spielberg would eventually drop out of the production enlisting other producers and filmmakers to eventually bring the manga to the big screen. Margot Robbie was the first choice to play Major, but when she passed on the project, the role was offered to Johansson with the rest of the cast announced in 2016. The casting of Johansson to play Major caused controversy with critics of the film accusing the film of “whitewashing” the manga.

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte Bibiliography: In Search of Anne Bronte by Nick Holland, (2016). - As the title indicates, this book focuses on Anne but it gives a rounded view of the family and their circumstances. Wuthering Bites by Sarah Gray (2010) - In which Heathcliff is a vampire. Didn't bother to read it, but had to include it here to show the range of fan fiction. Film and televion adaptations of WH. Please forgive omissions. There are so many! Ratings out of 5 stars. 1920 - Wuthering Heights, starring Colette Brettel and Warwick Ward - silent screen adaptation - I have not seen it. 1939 - Wuthering Heights, starring Merle Oberon and Laurence Olivier - 3 stars: Worth-seeing, though the content is sanitized for the Hollywood censors and the actors' looks are beautified for the tastes of the day. 1948 - Wuthering Heights (British TV adaption) - starring Katherine Blake and Kieron Moore - have not seen it. 1962 - Wuthering Heights, starring Keith Mitchell and Claire Bloom - have not seen it. 1967 - Wuthering Heights (British TV series), starring Angela Scoular and Ian McShane - 1 1/2 stars: McShane has the Heathcliff glower down to the tee. But little else about this slow-paced drama is engaging. 1970 - Wuthering Heights, starring Anna Calder-Marshall and Timothy Dalton - 4 stars: I saw this for my 13th birthday. It was my first taste of WH. My friends and I were so in love with Timothy Dalton. Nice dark perspective that maintains a lush emotional and physical violence along with the feral sexiness. 1978 - Wuthering Heights (TV series one season), starring John Duttine and Amanda Root - have not seen it 1992 - Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights, starring Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes - 2 stars: Fiennes is more mean and brittle than dark and brooding, while Binoche is too refined for Kathy. 1998 - Wuthering Heights, starring Robert Cavanah and Orla Brady - have not seen it. 2003 Wuthering Heights, starring Erika Christensen and Mike Vogel - modern day loose adaptation, I haven't seen it. 2009 - Wuthering Heights (limited TV series), starring Charlotte Riley and Tom Hardy - 4 1/2 stars: These 2 actors are the among the best to assay these roles. They both have the acting heft and temperment to manage the layers these characters embody. Though note to ITV, for God's and all our sakes please get some better wigs. Only someone as massively talented as Tom Hardy could overcome that mop on his head. 2011 - Wuthering Heights, starring Kaya Scodelario and James Howson - 1 1/2 stars: Director Andrea Arnold's films, while interesting, are low in energy and understated. This style does not serve a wild Gothic ghost story. The film is a faded husk. (On the other hand, many critics lauded it.)

Acclaimed cinematographer Checco Varese, ASC’s recently released feature It: Chapter Two is one of the most highly anticipated films of the year. It: Chapter Two, (from Warner Brothers and New Line) hits theaters Sep. 6. It is the eagerly-awaited sequel to It – director Andy Muschietti’s blockbuster adaptation of author Stephen King’s classic horror masterpiece by the same name. Within hours of its debut, It: Chapter Two’s trailer, alone, generated millions of views and sent fans and social media into a frenzy. Stephen King himself took to Twitter to praise the film. The saga’s latest chapter finds the self-proclaimed ‘Losers’ Club’ returning to their hometown of Derry, Maine after 27 years to defeat Pennywise – the shape-shifting, dancing demonic clown portrayed in terrifying fashion by Bill Skarsgård. All grown up and ready for serious battle, the all-star cast also features Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, Isaiah Mustafa, and Bill Hader. For Muschietti, who stepped back into the director’s role, tapping veteran cinematographer Checco Varese to shoot the sequel was a natural choice. “Checco and I go back a long time. We made commercials together a decade ago in Spain, as well as a little short film, and a pilot, too. Our communication has always been great, not only because of the shorthand coming from our cultural background and language, (I was born and raised in Argentina, while he is Peruvian but lived in Buenos Aires for years) but also because we speak a similar visual language. Just a few words were enough to express my vision of this film to him, and immediately an effervescent creative dialogue began. For a cinematographer, working with a director who is very visual can be a blessing or a curse. That’s why Checco is such a trooper. His patience is monumental, and his support unconditional,” compliments the director. He also cites Varese’s background as a war camera person as a huge asset, “That might explain his versatility and ability to adapt to the circumstances. In production, you have to change horses many times as you’re crossing the river, and when that happens, you want someone like Checco on your side, always supportive, loyal, and ready to share his visual creativity.” In addition to his collaborations with Muschietti, Varese has also partnered on several features with director Patricia Riggen including, Miracles From Heaven, Under the Same Moon, and the The 33, which starred Antonio Banderas and Juliette Binoche and is based on the real-life story of 33 miners trapped in a Chilean mine. Varese also enjoys a reputation for being the unofficial ‘pilot guy,’ lensing more than two dozen season starters – nineteen of which have been picked up for series including, True Blood; The Strain; The Returned; The Fosters; Colony; and The Defenders. He once again partnered with Riggen for the CBS’s pilot, Surveillance. His other credits include several episode of the first season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan for Amazon, and the sci-fi thriller Replicas featuring Keanu Reeves and Thomas Middleditch.
Malena Forsare, kulturskribent

Masamune Shirow's Ghost in the Shell (1995) is a cyberpunk, anime, masterpiece that questions what makes us human. Is it the body or the soul (our ghosts)? The 2017 live action remake starring Scarlett Johansson, Pilou Asbæk, Takeshi Kitano, Juliette Binoche, and Michael Pitt attempts to expand on this idea. This week Invasion of the Remake explores this high tech world of cyborgs, espionage, and artificial intelligence as we compare the anime to the live action Ghost in the Shell (2017). Ep. 22 Magic realism or chocolate witchcraft? That's the biggest question we have about 2000's Chocolat. We debate how we would use our chocolate powers, if we were wandering coco-shamans. We discuss how the film differs from the source novel (and how that's a good thing). We talk about all the wonderful performances from so many actors in this tasty film. Make sure to follow us on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook to keep up with news, to join the discussion about food, and to check out all of our personal recipes - like Sophie's Frozen Hot Chocolate! It’s 1986 and a sexually-transmitted retrovirus is killing off young people. A massive pharma company have a vaccine in development that they won’t release, until a band of misfits break in to liberate it… Sound familiar? It is and it isn’t. The sophomore feature from French enfant terrible Leos Carax is a heady, swoony, futuristic Nouvelle Nouvelle Vague oddity, for which (Carax’s then-girlfriend) Binoche garnered her first César nomination. The real star is the film’s ever-shifting aesthetic that encompasses cartoonish absurdism, music video, spectacle and lyricism in equal measure. Alex (Denis Lavant) is a juvenile delinquent caught up in the vaccine heist but whose “amour fou” for the unavailable Anna (Binoche) has him completely pent up. You see, in this alternative future, anytime you “make love without love,” you risk death. This is a caper that is full of ideas, emotions and set-piece scenes (like Juliette herself - not a stunt woman! - dangling from an airplane!!!). If it left us scratching our heads at times, it also prompted reflections on the pure beauty of the moving image and the irrational risks we all take to achieve…. Modern Love. Clips from the film presented according to fair use policy. Podcast Theme: "Pipeline" by CyberSDF (https://soundcloud.com/cybersdf/tracks).
Quick: name an Oscar-winning actress who’s worked with both Godard AND Godzilla. THERE IS ONLY ONE. Having been on international screens for three decades, Juliette Binoche has matured more gracefully than a vintage Bourdeaux, acquired more ripe notes than a cave-aged Gruyère. Take a look at the whole career from the dewy, sexualized ingénue of DAMAGE to the earthy middle-aged diva of SILS MARIA, and it is clear: JB is the Actress of Actresses. She’s bared both her flesh and her soul for countless auteurs, but she’s perhaps never been asked to carry a film quite so completely as she did for Krzystof Kieslowski in THREE COLOURS: BLUE. As a grieving widow thrown into a traumatised “liberté” that she never asked for, Binoche’s performance is mostly silent, often as cold as the film’s azure cinematography and as deeply felt as Zbigniew Preisner’s extraordinary score. Her Julie (like the continent of Europe itself) must confront the submerged pains of the past as she is hurtled forward into an uncertain future. That’s right: Juliette Binoche IS Europe. She is Cinema. She is Everything.
The incomparable French director Claire Denis returns with Let the Sunshine In, a romantic comedy of sorts that stars Juliette Binoche. Denis's fluid vision and singular sense of timing mixed with Binoche's endearing performance make for a thoughtful glimpse into a woman's quest for love on her own terms and, as Andrew Chan explains in his cover story about the film, “shows us not how we feel about love but how we look at it and talk about it—how it appears to us when experienced by others.” In this episode, FC Digital Producer Violet Lucca is joined by Editor-in-Chief Nicolas Rapold to discuss Denis and Binoche's film; then stay tuned for a live Q&A with Denis that followed a sneak preview of the film presented by Film Comment and IFC Films.
What does it mean to be human? Does the construct of a soul actually exist? Where is the closest 24 hour sushi restaurant near you? None of these questions and more will be answered in this episode of Cinema Sesh as AJ and Jay discuss the story of the cybernetic Major played by Scarlett Johansson. There is so much about this movie for us to unpack, especially in comparing it to the anime it is adapted from (Yes, we're those types of nerds. Also, guess which movie with Oompa Loompas we prefer). When it's all over, you'll have a better understanding of what it means to be our friends and what they have to put up with after we see a movie with them. You'll emit a laughter prompt, you'll leak silicone tears in a preprogramed act of crying, you might even acquire some new data packets that increase your understanding of your immediate world. But what do we know? We're not rocket surgeons. Enjoy! The Filmlosophers, Eddie Villanueva and Chad Riley, welcome back Val Complex and Nerd Reactor's Laura Sirikul back to the round table for week's review of Ghost in the Shell (2017), the controversy-laden anime adaptation directed by Rupert Sanders and starring Scarlett Johansson in the role of an Asian woman who has been transformed into a cyborg and is working for a paramilitary arm of the government. To what extent does the film exemplify the whitewashing of Asian roles in big-budget Hollywood films, and what kind of an effect did the casting decisions have on the film's reception?
What exactly is acting, and how can we pull apart its elements for our analysis? Madison-based cinephile Brandon Colvin has been trying to figure that out, whether through his academic sutidies, his programming, and most importantly, his own filmmaking. Colvin is the filmmaker behind two of the smallest but most unique films this side of American independent cinema, Frames and Sabbatical, and in this interview with Peter, discusses how he merged his own filmmaking interests with his academic interests, creating and exploring the relationship between directors and performers in the current landscape of today's films. Later, they dive into one of Jean-Luc Godard's most spiritual features, the aptly named Hail Mary, and talk through why this may be the most emotional film the French legend ever made. 0:00-2:20 Opening3:10-7:54 Establishing Shots - Hill of Freedom8:38-58:48 Deep Focus - Brandon Colvin59:55-1:02:32 Mubi Sponsorship1:03:41-1:21:42 Double Exposure - Hail Mary (Jean-Luc Godard)1:21:48-1:24:37 Close
This week's two-part episode features French filmmaker Olivier Assayas. Special guests include actresses Juliette Binoche and Kristen Stewart, who co-star in his latest film, CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA, opening in theaters next weekend. CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA, a main-slate selection of last year’s New York Film Festival, stars Binoche as a veteran actress coming to terms with her life and career after agreeing to act in a revival of the play that made her famous 20 years earlier. Stewart plays her assistant, who accompanies her on a soul-searching journey through the Sils Maria region of the Swiss Alps. Assayas has been called the most innovative and influential French director of his generation, and his relationship to the New York Film Festival goes all the back to 1996, when his film IRMA VEP was included in that year’s festival. Preceding the official NYFF52 screening of Clouds of Sils Maria, Assayas joined Binoche and Stewart onstage for a conversation with press, moderated by the festival’s director of programming, Kent Jones. The discussion will serve as part one of today’s episode. Part two comes from 2004, when the director took the stage following a screening of his seminal 1996 film, IRMA VEP. That film stars Maggie Cheung as herself cast in an ill-fated production of a remake of Louis Feullade's classic silent film serial LES VAMPIRES. This fascinating conversation was also moderated by our own Kent Jones. This podcast is brought to you by The Film Society of Lincoln Center. Witojcie!
This episode John has a couple of sips from Adam's wine about just how 'real' Dan's life really was. Other highlights include: the definition of the word 'cloying', a discussion about the trappings of modern comedies, and the glorification of morons. If you have a comment or question you can write us at theaftershowpodcast@gmail.com or call and leave a message at (206) 984-1298.
