The 33rd annual Heartland International Film Festival is set to kick off this week in Indianapolis, and it's bringing with it a lineup of films that promises to engage and inspire.Among the highlights is the much-anticipated documentary Driven to Save Lives, which tells the poignant story of Brian Clauson, a talented racer whose tragic passing in 2016 sparked a significant movement for organ and tissue donation.Running for 11 days, the festival will showcase a mix of films from major studios like Netflix and Prime Video, alongside impactful documentaries like Driven to Save Lives. Attendees will have the unique opportunity to catch films before they hit streaming platforms or theaters. “You might even see some familiar faces—like Will Ferrell—before anyone else,” Jessica noted, highlighting the festival's role as a precursor to the awards season. The Heartland Film Festival serves as the perfect platform for these moving and transformative stories. As the festival unfolds, Driven to Save Lives stands out as a film that has the potential to inspire change and make a lasting impact beyond the world of racing.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

PopaHALLics #88 "The Game is Afoot!"It's elementary, my dear listener. Steve and Kate have fun discussing "Enola Holmes 2," about Sherlock's younger sister on the trail of a missing match girl. We also talk murder—both real (at Harvard, no less) and fictional (a coworker coverup in Japan)—and explore the curious case of a schlocky zombie movie that isn't what it seems. This  mystery is worthy of Baker Street! Streaming:"Enola Holmes 2," Netflix. Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven on "Stranger Things") returns as an aspiring detective hoping to break out of the shadow of her famous brother. She talks directly to the camera as she gets into one hair-raising scrape after another. Big fun. With Helena Bonham Carter and Henry Cavill. "One Cut of the Dead," Shudder and rental. This clever, hilarious Japanese zombie comedy written and directed by Shin'ichirō Ueda features a play within a play. We first see what appears to be a short, cheap zombie movie shot in one continuous take about a filmmaking crew attacked by real zombies. But then the camera pulls back to show us what's going on behind the scenes of the movie about the movie. In Japanese with English subtitles."The School for Good and Evil," Netflix. In a movie based on a bestselling book series, best friends Sophie and Agatha find themselves on opposing sides when they join an enchanted school for aspiring heroes and villains.Books:"Out," by Natsuo Kirino. This 1997 Japanese crime novel won Best Novel from the Mystery Writers of Japan. When a female factory worker murders her husband, her three coworkers try to help her get away with it. That sets off a deadly cat and mouse game with the police and a local gangster, as well as simmering tensions within the group."We Keep the Dead Close: a Murder at Harvard and a Half Century of Silence," by Becky Cooper. In this critically acclaimed true crime narrative, a reporter sets out to find out the truth about the 1969 bludgeoning death of 23-year-old graduate student Jane Britton. The rumors were that  she had an affair with her professor, who murdered her when she threatened to go public ..."I'm Glad My Mom Died," by Jennette McCurdy.  in this fast read of a memoir, the former "iCarly" actress explores her complicated relationship with her show business-oriented mother."The Final Girl Support Group," by Grady Hendrix. This sly horror novel asks the question: In slasher movies, the final girls are the ones left standing when the credits roll. They made it through the worst night of their lives…but what happens after? Two Heartland Movies Coming to Theaters:Previous episodes talked about two new movies at the Heartland Film Festival in Indianapolis: "The Whale,"  with Brendan Fraser's comeback as a 600-lb. college professor seeking to reconcile with his daughter (Sadie Sink), and "Corsage," a lush reimagining of one year in the life of the tragic Austrian Empress Elisabeth (Vicky Kreps).  The New York Times, says "The Whale" will debut in theaters on Dec. 9 and "Corsage" on Dec. 23. Click through the links above to watch, read, and listen to what we're talking about.

This episode revisits my discussion with Danielle Wolter Nolan, who has a question for you. When was the last time you did something for the first time? In episode #42 from April 2020, Danielle and I talked about taking leaps of faith, what it means to push past what you believe is possible, and what it takes to live adventurously. Danielle and her wife, Kate Nolan, founders of DNK Presents, organize and guide empowering adventure retreats for groups and businesses. They focus on getting people to step outside their comfort zones, try something for the first time, and in turn, gain confidence through experiential learning and adventures. In 2016, they turned their story and the life changing stories of their fellow adventurers into a documentary film, titled “Live Adventurously,” which was accepted to the Heartland Film Festival. To learn more about the film, watch the trailer here.    As always, feel free to reach out with questions, comments, or experiences that you might like to share with others. Andrew Paul Davis is a native Floridian, now living in Indiana, who made this state the setting for his first full length movie, after honing his craft while attending Upland's Taylor University. The film, called Palace, presents a cross-generational portrait of life involving a stubborn auto mechanic, a retired widower, and a college student as they interact at a bar in rural Indiana. An official Heartland Film Festival selection this past fall, in Indianapolis, Palace has enjoyed enthusiastic reviews at screenings across the country, and will be shown at Fort Wayne's Cinema Center. For a look at the path taken by both the film, and its maker, WBOI's Julia Meek invited Davis, and one lead actor, Joe Martyn Ricke, into the studio to talk about the process, and the many connections they have enjoyed along the way. WBOI Artcentric is brought to you by WBOI's own Julia Meek and Ben Clemmer. Our theme music is “Me voy pal campo'' by KelsiCote. Our administrative assistant is Olivia Fletter. Kendall’s feature directorial debut, When Jeff Tried to Save The World, won the International Film Critics’ Prize at the 2018 Heartland Film Festival and garnered much praise. Most recently, Kendall created and directed a docuseries pilot for Comedy Central. Nina’s work as a director blurs the line between narrative and documentary, with an elegance and ease that has not gone unnoticed. Her work has been recognized both internationally by the Tribeca Film Festival, Cannes Lions, and the Clios, to name a few. We dive into their journeys getting projects off the ground, the importance of talking about your rejections as much as your successes, and their mutual admiration for Judith Weston. We end the discussion with a fun round of quick fire questions, such as favorite crafty snack and weirdest location they’ve filmed in.

Yet the original has been buried since its original VHS release and nowhere is this story of Hank’s extraordinary role in racial justice and civil rights available to be seen to honor his passing. There are seven (probably none after today) used VHS copies available at Amazon, but the film was never converted to DVD and is not available on any streaming platform. The mystery is why?

Danielle Wolter Nolan has a question for you...When is the last time you did something for the first time? Danielle and her wife Kate, founders of DNK Presents, organize and guide empowering adventure retreats for groups and businesses. They focus on getting people to step outside their comfort zones, try something for the first time, and in turn gain confidence through experiential learning and adventures. In 2016, they turned their story and the life changing stories of their fellow adventurers into a documentary film that was accepted to the Heartland Film Festival. To learn more about the film visit their website at https://www.liveadventurouslyfilm.com/. In this episode we talk about taking leaps of faith, what it means to push past what you believe is possible, and what it takes to live adventurously.

“When was the last time you did something for the first time? “ I heard those words for the first time in a documentary at the Heartland Film Festival entitled “Live Adventurously” featuring Kate Nolan and her wife Danielle Wolter-Nolan. Together they own and run a company called DNK Presents which takes everyday folks on the adventures of a lifetime. From couples trips to discover the dinosaur tracks in Moab Utah, to an 8 mile trek down into the South rim of the Grand Canyon into the Havasupai Indian Reservation, to a yoga retreat in Guatemala. Kate and Danielle do it all. Not only do they work for companies and retreats but they have also taken to helping others through their women’s adventure contest. This contest was the basis for the documentary that I stumbled on and cannot forget. Four women were chosen from a group of nominations for a 4 day backcountry adventure. All of the women have a story and they all finished the weekend much stronger than they started both mentally and physically. This first contest started in 2016 and has now become an annual event. The 2017 adventure is being worked into a feature film and nominations for the 2018 adventure begin on January 1st. Kate and Danielle share their top thrills, the things they WILL NOT do and adventures yet to be discovered. These two could motivate even this “set in her ways” gal to get off the couch and onto a mountain bike. Well, maybe… More info: DNKPresents.com LiveAdventurouslyfilm.com

Our special guest is Terry Benedict, an American film producer. He is the founder and CEO of The Shae Foundation. Terry is most well-known for co-producing Hacksaw Ridge, nominated for six Academy Awards. Hacksaw Ridge is based on Benedict’s documentary, The Conscientious Objector; a film about Medal of Honor winner Desmond Doss, who refused to carry a weapon in World War Two. Doss is the only conscientious objector to ever receive a Medal of Honor. After working on over a dozen independent films, Benedict felt impressed to create films that inspire and promote positive messages to the global community. He produced and directed the critically acclaimed and award-winning documentary film, The Conscientious Objector. The film garnered several dozen awards in multiple categories during a two-year run on the international festival circuit including many “audience favorite” awards, a Crystal Heart Award from the Heartland Film Festival and from Boston, a Humanitarian Award. The film played on the International Documentary Association’s InFACT Documentary tour qualifying it for Academy Award consideration. Benedict scripted the first draft of the theatrical narrative project based on the documentary and joined the producing team of Hacksaw Ridge, directed by Mel Gibson. Currently, Terry has several film projects in development including a new medical action/drama series and an international series focusing on Hope Extreme. He is also developing the film The Death of Reasonable Doubt, which follows the U.S. Supreme Court death-row case of Troy Davis in Savannah, Georgia. At its core is the fundamental question of fairness and whether it is Constitutional to execute a man who could be factually innocent but convicted by a fair trial. Brian Godawa is a Christian screenwriter and author of the Amazon bestselling Biblical fantasy novel “Noah Primeval.” He joins the show to discuss why there is so much controversy surrounding the new film, "Noah," and how the controversy compares to "Passion of the Christ" in 2004.   "Noah" has been edited many times to appease Christian critics like Godawa, but he's still not happy with the final version. Godawa explains how the film turns into environmentalist propaganda.   Brian Godawa is the screenwriter for the award-winning feature film, To End All Wars, starring Kiefer Sutherland. It was awarded the Commander in Chief Medal of Service, Honor and Pride by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, won the first Heartland Film Festival by storm, and showcased the 2003 Cannes Film Festival Cinema for Peace. He wrote and directed the documentary Wall of Separation for PBS, Lines That Divide: The Great Stem Cell Debate for CBC Network, and School's Out: Political Correctness Vs. Academic Freedom for Boulevard Pictures. He also adapted The Visitation by best-selling author Frank Peretti for Ralph Winter (X-Men, Wolverine).     Mr. Godawa's scripts have won multiple awards in such screenplay competitions as Carl Sautter, The Nicholl Fellowship, Austin Heart of Film, Fade-In, Worldfest, Writer's Network, Chesterfield Writer's Film Project, Columbus Discovery Awards and Reader's Digest Screenplay Competition.     He gives lectures at high schools and colleges on screenwriting, as well as the art of watching and writing movies. He has had his articles on movies and philosophy published in magazines around the world, most recently winning First Place from the EPA for his article on the philosophy of The Matrix.     His book, Hollywood Worldviews: Watching Films with Wisdom and Discernment (InterVarsity Press) is in its ninth printing, and his new book Word Pictures: Knowing God Through Story and Imagination (IVP) addresses the power of image and story in the pages of the Bible to transform the Christian life.    Find out more about Brian Godawa at www.godawa.com.

Had a lot of fun recording this week's show, as is obvious from the number of edits that were made to keep it on-topic and down to the time allotted. I've often felt that featured artist Cara Jean Wahlers' first appearance on the show failed to properly capture her warm, energetic personality -- though, arguably, that was by design, since that episode was dedicated to her Big Roots Show and not her own music. I'm glad that, almost two years later, I finally got the chance to have her back on to fix that particular oversight and showcase some of the new material she alluded to back then. Though traditionally a background and session player, those of us who have caught Cara Jean at her solo shows around town have known of her incredible singing and songwriting ability for a while now, and it's great to finally have some of it captured on an album (and podcast). Goodnight Charlotte, her first release with cellist Grover Parido, beautifully melds Cara Jean's atmospheric guitar, poetic lyrics, and delicate voice with Grover's unmatched ability to add richness and depth to a song as both a background and as a lead instrument, while at the same time never overpowering the other players and voices. The result is a beautiful, textured trip through a range of images, stories, and emotions that is as lush in tone as it is intelligent. As if all that weren't enough, we have another first for Indy In-Tune this week: a podcast partially dedicated to original Indiana music in film. Andie Redwine joins us to talk about her movie, Paradise Recovered, which premieres at the Heartland Film Festival this coming weekend. The film features music from a number of Indiana recording artists, including of course Cara Jean Wahlers and Grover Parido. With the film already garnering interest from Heartland, the Austin Film Festival, and a few other indie film showcases around the country, the boost of exposure for local, original music is almost as exciting as the success of the film itself. Links referenced in the show: Cara Jean Wahlers can be found here: | | | . She previously appeared on in support of .
