For their 100th podcast, Dan and Ellen talk with Tom Breen, the editor of the New Haven Independent. Tom joined the staff of the Independent in 2018, and then became managing editor. Last November, he stepped up to succeed founding editor Paul Bass, who launched the Independent in 2005 and is still very involved. He's executive director of the Online Journalism Project, the nonprofit organization he set up to oversee the Independent, the Valley Independent Sentinel in New Haven's northwest suburbs, and WNHH. He continues to report the news for the Independent and hosts a show on WNHH, and he started another nonprofit, Midbrow, which publishes arts reviews in New Haven and several other cities across the country. Listeners will also hear from Alexa Coultoff, a Northeastern student who wrote an in-depth report on the local news ecosystem in Fall River, Massachusetts, a blue-collar community south of Boston that flipped to Donald Trump in the last election after many decades of being a solidly Democratic city. We recently published Alexa's story at Whatworks.news. Ellen has a Quick Take on two big moves on the local news front. The National Trust for Local News has named a new CEO to replace Elizabeth Hansen Shapiro, who resigned earlier this year. The new leader is Tom Wiley, who is now president and publisher of the Buffalo News. And in the heartland, the Minnesota Star Tribune has named a new editor to replace Suki Dardarian, who is retiring. The nod goes to Kathleen Hennessey, the deputy politics editor of the New York Times and a former AP reporter. Dan's Quick Take examines a recent court decision ruling that Google has engaged in anti-competitive behavior in the way it controls the technology for digital advertising. This was the result of a lawsuit brought by the Justice Department and a number of states, but it's also the subject of lawsuits brought by the news business, which argues that Google has destroyed the value of online ads. It's potentially good news. It's also complicated, and its effect may be way off in the future.

Ellen and Dan talk with Paul Bass, the founder and former editor of the New Haven Independent. Bass is originally from White Plains, New York, but he arrived in New Haven in the late 1970s to attend Yale, and he has been reporting on all the quirks and glory of his adopted home town ever since. Bass was the main subject of Dan's 2013 book, "The Wired City," and is one of the news entrepreneurs featured in our forthcoming book, "What Works in Community News." Bass launched the New Haven Independent in 2005 as an online-only nonprofit. Last fall, Bass announced he was stepping aside as editor, handing the top job over to managing editor Tom Breen. But he's continuing to play a role at the Independent and its multimedia arms, and he has just launched another venture: The Independent Review Crew, which features arts and culture reviews from all over, including right here in Boston. Ellen has a Quick Take on the Texas Tribune, the much-admired nonprofit news outlet started by Evan Smith and others in Austin. The Tribune has been a model for other startups, so it rocked the world of local news last month when CEO Sonal Shah announced that 11 staffers had been laid off. Dan reports on another acquisition by Alden Global Capital, the New York-based hedge fund that has earned scorn for the way it manages its newspapers. Alden acquired four family-owned newspapers in Pennsylvania. Worse, the family members who actually ran the papers wanted to keep them, but they were outvoted by the rest of the family.

Welcome back to this latest installment of Vinyl Community Podcasts! On this trip around the turntable, Souldisco (Nadine) hosts a fun and insightful conversation about Vinyl Me, Please - the U.S. subscription vinyl service and independent record label. Founded in 2013 by Cameron Schaefer, VMP was initially established as a record of the month club, offering curated vinyl selections delivered straight to the doorsteps of it's members. Since then, it has evolved into a comprehensive music platform, encompassing record releases, online content, and an active community of music lovers. Vinyl Me, Please has carved out a niche in the music industry by combining the joy of vinyl collecting with a curated listening experience and a vibrant community. It's dedication to quality curation, attention to detail in packaging and presentation, and commitment to supporting artists have endeared the label to vinyl enthusiasts around the world. By bridging the gap between past and present, mainstream and obscure, Vinyl Me, Please continues to play a significant role in preserving the art and appreciation of vinyl records while championing the power of music discovery. Joining in this conversation is Sr. Manager of Customer Care at VMP Paul Bass (or Paulium for VMP members in the know) to share details from the perspective of a longtime employee of VMP. Rounding out the panel is Rocco (Pieces of Vinyl) - a fervent VMP champion, and Michael 45 - a longtime customer of VMP who frequently reviews the latest and greatest products offered by VMP on his influential YouTube channel. Dan and Ellen talk with Mary Margaret White, the CEO of Mississippi Today, a nonprofit digital news outlet that has been covering the state for more than six years. The staff has a robust presence at the statehouse in Jackson, and provides cultural and sports coverage, as well. Mary Margaret is a Mississippi native. She has a bachelor's in English and journalism and a master's in Southern Studies from the University of Mississippi. She also spent almost 10 years working for the state, with jobs in arts and tourism. Her work has appeared in The Listening Post Collective, The New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture and on Mississippi Public Broadcasting radio. Dan has a Quick Take on a major transition at the New Haven Independent. Last week the indefatigable founder, Paul Bass, announced he was stepping aside as editor of the Independent. The new editor will be Tom Breen, currently the managing editor. Luckily, Bass isn't going anywhere but will continue to play a role. Ellen's Quick Take is on another big transition at the Texas Tribune. Economist Sonal Shah is becoming CEO at the Tribune in January. Shah, who has had leadership roles at Google, the White House, and other high-impact nonprofits, replaces co-founder Evan Smith, who is taking a role as senior adviser to the Emerson Collective. It's a big transition at a pioneering nonprofit newsroom. Smith says he'll continue to spread the local news gospel in his new role.
Keeping It 100 With Jose Candelario: Special Report With Paul Bass by WNHH Community Radio
Dateline New Haven with Paul Bass: Student Loans by WNHH Community Radio
We welcome Dan's wrestling coach Paul Bass to the podcast this episode. Over his career, 37 seasons as a coach, 32 as head coach, all at Westhampton Beach High School, Bass amassed 324 wins, making him the sixth winningest coach in Suffolk County (NY). During his time coaching, he produced 246 All-League wrestlers, eight county champions, 13 state qualifiers, and six wrestlers were All-State. Bass was named the Coach of the Year title seven times in his career, and in 2015 he was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Coach Bass talks about what he gained from coaching the sport for almost four decades, what it still means to him today and how he and wrestlers both changed over the years.Plus, he gives us the inside scoop on how good of a wrestler Dan was in high school. In the intro we discuss the new classifications that came out earlier this month and go on a mini rant about how the state duals should be seeded. All of this and more on this week's episode.
Paul Bass is the founder and EIC of the New Haven Independent, one of the nation's first online-only, nonprofit multimedia newspapers. He is also the author of one of Norm's favorite books, "Murder in the Model City: the Black Panthers, Yale, and the Redemption of a Killer," a recount of the trial of 8 Black Panthers members accused of murdering a spy among them. Similar to the magic of Norm's discussions with Ron Coleman, Paul Bass is an undeniable spirit, committed to the first amendment protections for the press. Paul is a lifer in the newspaper business. And if you ask us? He is the essence of American journalism. Paul joined Norm on a daily live show just a couple of weeks back. As you will hear, radio's advertising constraints simply did not do a service to the nature of Norm and Paul's intellectual journey. So Paul agreed to join Law and Legitimacy for a Fathers Day edition of the pod. Norm and Paul discuss what Paul calls the "big lobotomy" that has occurred in journalism, one that has seen hedge funds and highly capitalized corporate interest neutralize the independent voice in news and reporting. Paul also shares why he believes that such a dumbing down and whitewashing of reporting has cultivated "the Golden Age of Journalism" through the hundreds of experiments taking place today outside the walled garden of major corporate news. Preoccupied with how newspapers remain viable, Norm asks Paul to talk about the business model that has worked for Paul with the New Haven Independent, to unpack the limitations of advertising revenue as a model for scaling quality reporting, and how search engine optimization has replaced truth in the most basic sense of the word when it comes to sources of news and reporting upon which most Americans still today rely. Paul is an opponent of all hate speech laws, but is able to parse the nuance of message board management and the role of each outlet in deploying a realistic approach to platform censorship. In his own words, Paul is able to "embrace [his] inner China" when it comes to discerning between normal discourse and potentially slanderous personal attacks. Have we found a different door through which the likes of Twitter should walk? The two talk broadly about American media as the mirror of its current society, analyze whether there has been a true loss of legitimacy in American institutions, and explore the proposition that working as a journalist is an inherently spiritual vocation. Perhaps one of Paul's most compelling qualities is his how politely he asks Norm whether he may disagree with him. This episode went a bit over time, but you will hear why. Enjoy Paul Bass. I am very fortunate to have been coached by Cofounder of Fortune Management Dr. Paul Bass in my career as a dental hygienist. But his teachings have impacted my life in so many ways, even outside of the workplace. In this interview Dr. Bass shares his journey of how he and the other cofounders Dr. Gary McLeod, Rene Schubert, formed a partnership with Tony Robbins to form Fortune Management. He also reveals a new branch expanding from Dentistry that can make a huge impact in the field of Medicine. The biggest takeaway that I have learned from Dr. Bass that really lit an inspiring FIRE in me, was a workshop at his Wealth Mastery Seminar in Atlanta GA. He taught me how...not only to DREAM, but to DREAM BIG! I have never been the same since that day and it has just been growing more and more. Dr. Paul Bass the co-founder and Director of Fortune Management is here today. Fortune Management is a medical coaching practice that helps doctors and owners find out what they want and then achieve that. Dr. Bass is a dentist who practiced for 21 years, before founding Fortune Management with Tony Robbins and two other founders. Today it is one of the biggest practice management resources available. Dr. Bass shares his story of how he got involved with Tony Robbins and the importance of asking the right questions. In this episode, he shares smart strategies for dental practices and getting your team to share your vision. He also shares knowledge for how to live a better life by having a vision and creating a life plan and working backwards. This episode is packed with knowledge that you won't want to miss. You can find our guest here: Fortune Management Dr. Paul Bass on LinkedIn Dr. Paul Bass on Facebook Fortune Management Practice Mastery Podcast Show Notes: [02:30] Dr. Paul Bass, Tony Robbins and two other people founded Fortune Management in 1990. [02:46] Dr. Bass practiced for 21 years in Tullahoma, TN. [02:54] In 1988, Dr. Bass's room mate gave him a copy of Unlimited Power. It took him about four months to get started reading the book, but once he started he finished it in about four days. [03:36] Make a point to meet your heroes. [04:23] Dr. bass reached out to Robbins International to see if he could take a seminar. [05:15] He ended up asking Tony Robbins to come do a seminar where he was at. The fee was $50,000, so he got 50 of his doctor friends to attend the seminar and pay a $1,000 fee. [06:45] Dr. Bass ended up asking Tony if he wanted to have a branch in healthcare. Maybe it was divine intervention, but a partnership was formed. [08:56] One of the goals was to preserve private practice fee dentistry. [09:19] Wants and needs always exceed available cash flow. [12:27] When your staff has ownership in your vision, it is way different than just the doctor having a vision. [13:32] Look to the future and take care of your end game and take your team with you. [14:06] 80% of getting anything done in life Is knowing why to do it. [14:53] To get your team to buy into the vision, you need to let them help create the vision. [16:09] When talking about transformation use emotion evoking words. [16:33] To create a team mission statement have everyone write down emotion evoking words that express their calling in dentistry. [25:08] The four cornerstones of building unstoppable team include shared vision. Begin your staff meeting by reading the vision and sharing. [27:22] It's also helpful to acknowledge people. [28:25] A set of operating principles that we call agreements. These provide certainty. Have the team decide how they are going to be together. [31:05] Communication is the third cornerstone. It needs to be open positive communication. [33:41] A reality check is a communication tool that is a series of questions that allows you to stop and reassess the situation no matter how upset you are. [35:57] The fourth piece is relationships. Having a shared vision, agreements, and communication leads to a positive team relationship. [37:55] Coaching is taking on someone else's commitment as if it was your own. Then interacting with them in such a way that they get the desired result. [43:26] If you want to find out what people value, ask questions. [45:48] Being on a cohesive team is what keeps quality people around. [48:08] It's not about making money now, it's about creating a plan so that you are free and money is abundant. [53:11] Sully has been in a funk lately. As the leaders go, so the team goes. [54:04] We need to be able to manage our emotional state no matter what is going on around us. The most profound thing Dr. Bass learned from Tony is state management. [55:15] You can change your focus by asking yourself a better question. This can change your thought process immediately. [58:14] A coach can ask you questions that drives you towards your vision. [58:37] The ultimate success formula. Number one know your outcome. [59:42] 500mg of niacin every day to lower your cholesterol and two tablespoons of Metamucil in water before each meal. [01:02:27] A decision is to cut away from something. If you have a behavior that isn't empowering cut away from it. [01:02:55] Master your mind, body, and relationships. [01:04:04] Create a lifetime plan and work backwards. [01:05:00] Create outcomes as opposed to goals. [01:05:19] To accelerate numbers in your practice, accelerate your hygiene re-care program. [01:10:09] If you schedule your re-care patients 6 months and 2 weeks in advance, then if you have cancellations, you can call the next schedule of people and have them fill those spots. [01:12:18] Fortune Management is a franchised company. [01:19:48] The three domains of knowledge. What you know. What you don't know. What you didn't know you didn't know. After I prayed for a monkey as a little child, I got one. Well, kind of. Listen to find out what happens when we realize what we prayed for might not be what we really need.
If you absolutely hate cats and you enjoy seeing them try to murder humans, you may enjoy this film. Otherwise, it's a story mess. Just a bunch of fakey voices for animals and a silly human (Robinson Crusoe) trying to build stuff.
Two things we do when we find a Bible verse that we don't understand. We either forget it and say the Bible is not true, or we spend much time getting education and talking ourselves into what the Bible verse means. I present to you that the Bible is true starting from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22 verse 21. If you find a question simply keep reading.
Have you ever seen a person who had so much makeup and adornment that you are pretty sure if she was the invisible woman, you could still see her? What with that shell of makeup totally encompassing, you would have no trouble spotting her if she was the invisible woman. Please visit Basicallythedeal.com to comment or question my sanity.
Dr Paul Bass, one of the co-founders of Fortune Management spent some time with me to discuss the history of Fortune, the power of coaching and leadership of dental teams. You may be surprised to know that the earliest formation of what is now Fortune Management was in the late 1970’s.
If you are over the age of 16, you should watch this movie - maybe more than once. This is an important film which shows what happens when government bureaucracy traps (and kills) our own representatives in other lands. The film only slightly addresses the lies of the current administration regarding the "cause" of this tragedy.
Jennifer Garner kicks it up in this. She doesn't beat up any spies, but she just about drop kicks a doctor or two until she can find out what's going on with her sick daughter. This is a good movie that will not allow you to endure without a tear or twenty. Miracles From Heaven is a keeper.
Joseph Fiennes does a sword-sharp job of being Sherlock Romes in this biblical era movie. It is a good movie with a positive look at, not only faith, but faith in the risen Savior. Go see it, or rent it when old Redbox offers it. Then you can pretend that the movie "Risen" is emerging from it's tomb to live again. Or... not. But enjoy it and share it. This is one of the best movies about Jesus in a long time.
This one is worth a view. So dedicated to re-creating the original. It's a keeper indeed. Snoopy still rules.
WNHH host and New Haven Independent editor Paul Bass speaks to Ben Berkowitz and Caroline Smith of SeeClickFix about the site's weekly news. From Houston, Assistant Director, Houston 311, Frank Carmody joins as well.
This is a good football movie, but not just a football movie. It is a good movie that does not rely on the sympathy ticket buyer. It stands out from Christian films in a rare way.
Paul Bass gives a little insight into the latest teen driven action flick. The 5th Wave is a lot like "Home" except not a cartoon and, in this movie the girl makes out with the alien. AweMan. I might have spoiled it for ya.

Why do we visit historical sites? Commentator Mike Pesca wants to talk about the value of seeing a place, especially one like Dallas' Dealey Plaza about which arguments have raged for decades. Mike says there's a difference between watching a NOVA special and walking through the place with your own eyes open.Paul Bass, from the New Haven Independent, will bring us up to speed on three stories, including one from the weekend about a stretch limo that transported women to and from a drug and alcohol treatment center so they could vote on Election Day.
