Join us on a gripping journey through the life and crimes of Frederick Darren Muskopf, better known as Darren Berg, a man whose insatiable thirst for wealth led him down a dark and deceitful path. From his humble beginnings in Grants Pass, Oregon, to his rise as a notorious figure in the Pacific Northwest, Berg's story is one of ambition, deception, and shattered dreams. As a child, Berg created an alter ego, Rod Taylor, to compensate for his perceived shortcomings, stemming from a tumultuous upbringing marked by familial abuse and a relentless drive for acceptance. Despite early signs of trouble, Berg's desire for success propelled him through the ranks of fraternity leadership and into the world of entrepreneurship. However, Berg's ventures were tainted by financial mismanagement and, eventually, outright fraud. From bank fraud to elaborate Ponzi schemes, Berg's criminal activities defrauded investors of over $200 million, funding a lifestyle of excess and opulence reminiscent of Bernie Madoff. But Berg's empire crumbled under the weight of his deceit, leading to an 18-year prison sentence for wire fraud, money laundering, and bankruptcy fraud. Yet, his audacious escape from prison in Atwater, California, adds a surreal twist to his saga, leaving authorities and victims in a state of uncertainty. Join us as we delve into the intricate web of Berg's crimes, unraveling the devastating impact on his victims, serving as a cautionary tale of greed and deception in the Pacific Northwest. This week we shared the podcasts Rotten to the Core & Frightful Visit our website! Sponsored by the Murray State University Alumni Association and hosted by Murray State Director of Alumni Relations Carrie McGinnis and 2018 Murray State graduate Jordan Lowe, The Racer Alumni Podcast: Stories from the Finest Place We Know, offers the chance to connect with your alma mater and others within our global alumni family. We are 80,000-strong. Murray State University was founded in 1922, making 2022 our Centennial year. As we celebrate the institution's 100th birthday, it is only appropriate that we are being led into our next century by an alumnus and longtime member of the Racer community, Dr. Bob L Jackson. Dr. Jackson was appointed president of his alma mater in March of 2019, after serving as interim president beginning in August 2018. He graduated from Murray State in 1985 with a bachelor's degree in finance. He has since gone on to complete graduate courses at Murray State and doctoral courses at the University of Leicester (UK). He holds a Master of Arts degree in higher education administration for Antioch University and a doctorate in educational leadership from Western Kentucky University. His wife and first lady, Mrs. Karen Miller Jackson, graduated from Murray State in 1984 with a degree in nursing. During the episode one of the Racer Alumni Podcast, released July 1, 2022, Dr. Jackson talks about upbringing with five siblings in Magnolia, Kentucky, why he chose Murray State for his college experience and his time as a young Racer beginning in the fall of 1981. He began his foray into leadership as a student, serving as a Student Ambassador, on student government and as president of his fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha. As an alumnus of the University he leads, Dr. Jackson said the expectations he places upon himself, and to some extent the expectations that others place on him, are colored through a blue and gold lens. His professional experiences working in state government, in corporate finance and as a member of the faculty and staff at Murray State have positioned him with a unique set of skills and perspective that have tremendous impact on his daily walk and decision-making as president. The relationships and friendships that Dr. Jackson has built and fostered over many years also create a unique level of access to the president's office for alumni who have essentially grown up professionally alongside him. You will also have the opportunity to hear first-hand what it has been like for Dr. Jackson to navigate our collective alma mater through one of the scariest and most difficult periods in our history and one of the most exciting milestones of our history, a global pandemic and our centennial celebration, in just the span of 2-3 years. A well-documented history buff and not one to dwell on the negative, Dr. Jackson has made it a priority to spend our 100th year in appreciation of those who first imagined what is now Murray State University, those who fought to turn that dream into a reality for this small spec of land in far western Kentucky and those who have led the institution through incredible challenges, exciting breakthroughs and tremendous global change to become the world-class regional public University we are today. That 100-year history has been laid out into a pictorial coffee table book which Dr. Jackson co-authored along with members of our University Libraries faculty, Dr. Jeff McLaughlin and Sarah Marie Owens. The Finest Place We Know: A Centennial History of Murray State University, 1922-2022 is currently available for presale at murraystate.edu/centennial. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and pick-up this fall. So, what is next for Murray State as we head into our next 100 years? Dr. Jackson lays out the “great transformation” that is currently underway on our campus and the things he sees as priorities moving forward into the next 10-20 years. New episodes of the Racer Alumni Podcast will release on the 1st and 15th of each month. We encourage you to subscribe so you don't miss an episode. Our next guest is Sydney Newby, a Bowling Green State University sorority member who was honored with the first Stone Foltz memorial award for taking action against Greek Life hazing. Foltz was pledging to Pi Kappa Alpha at just 20 years old. Sydney says it's a loss she never wants to see happen again, and she's taken it upon herself to educate sorority members on campus. On episode 239 of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, we find out why Sydney chose Bowling Green State University, what was special about the sisters of Sigma Kappa that made her want to join, what she and the students were experiencing when Stone Foltz (a BGSU student who passed away on March 7, 2021) died as a result of hazing, how Sydney was able to work through the loss of her Nana and Grandpa passing away and then focus on making a difference, what the hazing prevention workshops looked like when she was VP of Standards for Panhellenic, what the moment felt like when she was awarded the first Stone Foltz Community of Care Award, when hazing will end, how we can leverage social media to help us defeat hazing, effective replacement activities if we know hazing is happening in our chapter, and steps students should take if they see hazing happening on their campus. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Friday, March 4. Friday will be a cloudy day that will lead to a rainy Saturday. According to the National Weather Service it will be mostly cloudy in the Cedar Rapids area with a high near 48 degrees. A wind of 10 to 15 mph will gust as high as 25 mph. There will be a slight chance of rain Friday night, with a low around 42 degrees. Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds signed into law legislation that bans transgender girls and women from participating in girls' and women's sports in Iowa. Iowa becomes the 11th state to enact a ban on transgender girls in girls sports. The legislation, https://www.legis.iowa.gov/legislation/BillBook?ga=89&ba=HF2416 (House File 2416), passed through the Iowa Legislature with https://www.thegazette.com/state-government/ban-on-transgender-girls-in-iowa-girls-sports-approved/ (only Republican support). Republicans and supporters of the new law say it is a matter of ensuring fairness in girls' and women's athletics. “It's simply a reality of human biology. Forcing females to compete against males is the opposite of inclusivity, and it's absolutely unfair,” Reynolds, a Republican, said during the public bill-signing event. “Girls athletes would inevitably be displaced by biological boys with physical advantages.” There are no examples of transgender girls dominating a girls' sport in Iowa, and examples nationally exist but are rare. Democrats, advocates for transgender people and other opponents argue the besides the rarity of what the bill says it is trying to fix, bills the target transgender students will create a feeling of exclusion who already report high rates of school bullying, isolation, and suicidal thoughts. After at least six incidents of misconduct since the fall of 2017 — including two this academic year — the University of Iowa has suspended its chapter of the popular Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity for at least four years. That means the chapter — known as “PIKE,” sitting adjacent UI's Mayflower Residence Hall along Dubuque Street — won't be eligible for UI recognition again until July 1, 2026. Should the chapter face more misconduct allegations in the interim while not recognized by the university, administrators could extend the suspension, according to a Feb. 23 disciplinary letter. The Iowa PIKE chapter was https://www.thegazette.com/higher-education/university-of-iowa-fraternities-investigated-for-rowdy-tailgate/ (among three UI fraternities) found to have been involved in hosting impermissible and illegal tailgates in the fall. The panel that regulates Iowa gaming facilities will take applications from those seeking a license to operate a facility in Linn County, potentially opening the door to the development of a casino in Iowa's second-largest city. But Cedar Rapids will only secure permission from the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission if city officials and developers successfully make their case, overcome opposition and assuage concerns that a casino in Cedar Rapids will “cannibalize” the market. That market also includes Waterloo and Riverside, cities within an hour drive that already have casinos. The five-member panel has denied Cedar Rapids a license to operate a casino twice before, in 2014 and 2017, because it considered the market sufficiently served. But Cedar Rapids believes “the time is now” for a casino. Officials say the casino could be part of Iowa's solution to stave off competition from recently approved gaming at Nebraska's six horse tracks. In the final episode of Broken Pledge, Shari Foltz and Kathleen Wiant talk with The Dispatch about their aspirations for a hazing-free future. After the loss of their sons Collin and Stone the mothers worked together to keep their promises by pushing lawmakers to pass an anti-hazing law. The new law, Collin's Law, makes criminal punishments more severe for those who haze and expands the definition of hazing in Ohio to include the forced consumption of drugs and alcohol. Finally, the mothers reflect on their sons, the pain, and answer what they would say to group of people who are participating in hazing rituals.

Dispatch education reporters Sheridan Hendrix, Alissa Widman Neese and Megan Henry discuss hazing on college campuses and the lasting impacts it can have. During this episode of The Learning Pod, they discuss how 20-year-old Bowling Green State University student Stone Foltz died from alleged fraternity hazing earlier this month. They also talk about how Collin’s Law has been reintroduced by Ohio senators, what can be done to prevent hazing, and how education on hazing in Greek life and student organizations could help. Cory and Shari Foltz speak with Dispatch reporters Mike Wagner and Sheridan Hendrix regarding the recent death of their son Stone Foltz, a 20-year-old sophomore at Bowling Green State University. Stone was pledging Pi Kappa Alpha International, better known on campus as PIKE. Foltz was placed on life support after he was given "a copious amount of alcohol" at an off-campus event organized by the BGSU chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha and then dropped off at his apartment by fraternity members, according to Sean Alto, an attorney for the family. Stone died at the hospital on Sunday March 7, 2021. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The CDC has issued new guidelines for those who are fully vaccinated. The good news is that those people can now visit with other fully vaccinated people indoors without wearing masks or social distancing. And if they are exposed to the virus, there's no need to quarantine or get tested if they show no symptoms. Lev Facher, Washington correspondent at STAT News, joins us for the new rules for those that have gotten their vaccine. Next, we are seeing a rise in border crossings at the southern border. Some have blamed the policies from the Biden administration as the reason for encouraging the surge, but that is only a small part. There have been hurricanes in Honduras that have left people homeless, food shortages in Central America, and the pandemic has also been pushing people to the U.S. Stef Kight, immigration reporter at Axios, joins us for why migrants are fleeing their homes once again. Finally, another tragic story of fraternity hazing gone wrong. 20 year-old Stone Foltz from Bowling Green State University has died after being given “copious amounts of alcohol” as a frat party. His family has decided to donate his organs. The fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha, has been stripped of its status as a student organization and an investigation is underway. Bethany Bruner, reporter at The Columbus Dispatch, joins us for more. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.com

PIKE University is the only fraternity-sponsored leadership program that provides regional summits for general members in addition to programs offered for chapter leaders. In August of 2017, Town & Country named Pi Kappa Alpha among the most prestigious fraternities in America, citing the Fraternity as a leading competitor for leadership programs. Our undergraduates return to their chapters equipped with the knowledge and skills to make impactful change. For this episode, Jarrett sits down with Education Officer Danny Ryan (Missouri S&T, Alpha Kappa ’06) to talk about the value of this educational programming and how it can transform your chapter. On a fundamental level, scholarship is a priority for all of our chapters. Fraternity doesn’t exist without our host institutions, so an emphasis on scholarship programming is not only encouraged – it’s expected. As members of Pi Kappa Alpha, we should strive to live a life that is congruent with our values of scholars, leaders, athletes and gentlemen. If not, we are doing both ourselves and our chapters a disservice. Delta + Arkoma Consultant Daniel Maloney (Nevada - Las Vegas, Kappa Omicron '14) joins the podcast as we discuss effective scholarship programming and what that might look like in your chapter.
