Beatle proteges Badfinger were an Apple band that simultaneously produced some of the finest pop/rock of their era while beset by management malfeasance leading directly to their decimation by suicide. It was fifty years ago that Pete Ham, their songwriter responsible for “No Matter What,” “Day After Day” and “Baby Blue” and co-writer with Tommy Evans of “Without You” took his life at 27. Only a few months before, he and the band recorded one final album (at Apple Studios), Head First. Multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter Bob Jackson, the group's newest addition, was fully on board with the project, which went unreleased at the time but through his determination, was tracked down and fully realized in late 2024. In this conversation, Bob discusses his tenure in the band alongside Pete, Tommy, Mike Gibbins and the late Joey Molland, as well as his work with them through the years that followed as well as the lasting impact of the two tragedies. Do you know the tragic story of Badfinger? Behind such life-affirming songs as “No Matter What,” “Day After Day” and “Baby Blue” and the much-covered power ballad “Without You” lay a dark tale in which Badfinger's manager defrauded the band and left them destitute. Bob Jackson played keyboards and guitar in the last Badfinger lineup that featured Pete Ham, the honey-voiced singer-songwriter behind most of those hits. This lineup recorded the album Head First in late 1974, but Warner Bros. refused to release it amid the manager's financial misconduct. Ham took his own life months later. Bassist-singer-songwriter Tom Evans would take his own life in 1983. A rough mix of Head First finally came out in 2000, but Jackson, the last surviving member of the lineup that recorded it, marked its 50th anniversary by locating the original multi-tracks and releasing what he considers the definitive version. Jackson recounts his fraught yet creatively productive time with Badfinger, his chilling final visit with Ham, and how bringing the music of Head First to the world became his raison d'etre.

As we celebrate the tremendous impact that Dr. Martin Luther King had and continues to have on our nation, it is only fitting that we learn more about the life of someone who's legacy is forever imprinted upon Murray State's history of familial culture and academic excellence, Mary Ford Holland, '61. Mary Ford Holland, Murray State's first Black student, was posthumously awarded an honorary doctorate of education from Murray State as part of our fall 2022 commencement ceremony. Holland's niece and longtime caretaker, Elnora Ford, travelled to campus from her home in Michigan to accept the honor on her behalf, and on behalf of the Ford family. Originally from Trigg County, Kentucky, Holland was home schooled by her mother and grandmother until she entered the eighth grade. She graduated from a segregated boarding school in Paducah and eventually earned her teaching certificate from West Kentucky Industrial College, now West Kentucky Community and Technical College, in 1935. Holland also attended Kentucky State College, now Kentucky State University, through correspondence courses part-time, working toward her bachelor's degree. In the summer of 1955, at 48 years old and on the heels of the Brown v. Board of Education decision, Holland transferred to what at the time was Murray State College, becoming the first Black student to attend the institution. She earned her bachelor's degree in Education in August of 1961 at the age of 54. Mary Ford Holland was a pioneer in education throughout this region, teaching literacy and English, eventually retiring as a Reading Specialist at Lyon County Elementary School in 1972. She and her husband, Charles, did not have children, so it was Elnora who served as her caretaker until her death at age 92. While in Murray, Elnora sat down with Murray State University President Dr. Bob Jackson, College of Education and Human Services Dean Dr. David Whaley and Director of Alumni Relations Carrie McGinnis to share an oral history of Mary Ford Holland's upbringing, early career and groundbreaking experience at Murray State so we can preserve that important part of our history for the University's archives. This episode of the Racer Alumni Podcast features the audio of that conversation.  This podcast was produced with the help of Jim Ray Consulting Services and made possible by members of the Murray State University Alumni Association.  Jim is a 1992 Murray State graduate. Murray State University was founded in 1922, making 2022 our Centennial year. What is a celebration of our 100-year history without a historian? We brought in our very own to talk about the facts, lore, innovations, foresight, politics, social change and local characters that willed Murray State Normal School and Teacher's College into being in far western Kentucky ten decades ago and paved the way to where we are today as a nationally-ranked public regional University with nearly 10,000 students and more than 80,000 living alumni. Dr. Jeff McLaughlin is Murray State's Archives/Museum Director, housed in the grand campus treasure that is Pogue Library, and co-author of the University's upcoming pictorial book, The Finest Place We Know. Despite his Canadian heritage, Dr. McLaughlin's academic interests include Twentieth Century World History, U.S. Modern History, American Foreign Relations, the Cold War, the Vietnam War and Sports History. In 2019 the University Press of Kentucky published his book, JFK and de Gaulle: How America and France Failed in Vietnam, 1961-1963.   During episode two, released July 15, Jeff talks about some of the epic shifts and challenges that Murray State and its administration weathered throughout our nation's history, such as the Great Depression, WWII, Vietnam, Civil Rights and generations of students coming of age on our campus. Some questions we will answer along the way include: What were some of the surprises unearthed while researching our centennial history book? Why was the early relationship between the University's founder and first president somewhat “frosty” at the outset? Who was “Dew Drop” Brumley Rowlett? (The story of one of the first female scholarship athletes at Murray State may shock you.) Why did Murray State become home to a naval flight school and how did it keep the University “a float?” How did the bravery and peaceful activism of one Black student change the culture of an iconic local establishment? What is a “super carpetbagger?” Is Colonel Sanders really not from Kentucky? The pictorial coffee table book, which Dr. McLaughlin co-authored alongside Murray State President Dr. Bob Jackson and University Libraries Specialist Sarah Marie Owens, The Finest Place We Know: A Centennial History of Murray State University, 1922-2022, is currently available for presale at murraystate.edu/centennial. He holds a Master of Arts degree in higher education administration for Antioch University and a doctorate in educational leadership from Western Kentucky University.  His wife and first lady, Mrs. Karen Miller Jackson, graduated from Murray State in 1984 with a degree in nursing. During the episode one of the Racer Alumni Podcast, released July 1, 2022, Dr. Jackson talks about upbringing with five siblings in Magnolia, Kentucky, why he chose Murray State for his college experience and his time as a young Racer beginning in the fall of 1981. He began his foray into leadership as a student, serving as a Student Ambassador, on student government and as president of his fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha. As an alumnus of the University he leads, Dr. Jackson said the expectations he places upon himself, and to some extent the expectations that others place on him, are colored through a blue and gold lens. His professional experiences working in state government, in corporate finance and as a member of the faculty and staff at Murray State have positioned him with a unique set of skills and perspective that have tremendous impact on his daily walk and decision-making as president. The relationships and friendships that Dr. Jackson has built and fostered over many years also create a unique level of access to the president's office for alumni who have essentially grown up professionally alongside him. You will also have the opportunity to hear first-hand what it has been like for Dr. Jackson to navigate our collective alma mater through one of the scariest and most difficult periods in our history and one of the most exciting milestones of our history, a global pandemic and our centennial celebration, in just the span of 2-3 years. A well-documented history buff and not one to dwell on the negative, Dr. Jackson has made it a priority to spend our 100th year in appreciation of those who first imagined what is now Murray State University, those who fought to turn that dream into a reality for this small spec of land in far western Kentucky and those who have led the institution through incredible challenges, exciting breakthroughs and tremendous global change to become the world-class regional public University we are today. That 100-year history has been laid out into a pictorial coffee table book which Dr. Jackson co-authored along with members of our University Libraries faculty, Dr. Jeff McLaughlin and Sarah Marie Owens. The Finest Place We Know: A Centennial History of Murray State University, 1922-2022 is currently available for presale at murraystate.edu/centennial. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and pick-up this fall. So, what is next for Murray State as we head into our next 100 years? Dr. Jackson lays out the “great transformation” that is currently underway on our campus and the things he sees as priorities moving forward into the next 10-20 years. Hello and welcome to Beauty and the Biz where we talk about the business side of cosmetic surgery and how Lionel Meadows, MD went from practicing as an obstetrician-gynecologist to also becoming a board-certified cosmetic surgeon. Have you ever gone down one path in life and then discovered you either out-grew it, discovered a different path that looked better or even started a brand new path? These paths commonly include choosing a mate, a place to live and/or a career path. For Dr. Lionel Meadows, it included a different specialty. In this week's Beauty and the Biz Podcast, I interviewed Dr. Lionel Meadows. He started out as an Ob-Gyn and practiced for 10 years before realizing he preferred cosmetic surgery. That urge for change sent him on a path of re-educating, re-tooling and building a new practice centered around cash-paying cosmetic patients. Dr. Meadows explains how he did it and what he learned along the way. Visit Dr. Lionel Meadows' website Enjoy and I look forward to your feedback –

Veterans are a unique breed of individuals. They are the only demographic in the nation tied together by the oaths they take to the country and the values they hold instilled in them from the moment they step off that bus at boot camp. As they continue through life, the values, like duty and selfless service, continue to drive many of them to not walk past problems in their communities. When they see a need they step up to meet it. "Yehaa" Bob Jackson is a Disney Legacy Cast Member who has been performing at the River Roost Lounge at Disney's Port Orleans Riverside Resort for more than 23 years (dating back to the days when the resort was known as Disney's Dixie Landings Resort). Bob's show is one that many visitors to Walt Disney World know well. Personally, many of my Disney trips as a kid were spent at Port Orleans Riverside and included an evening or two watching Bob's performance. When you watch Bob perform, it's incredible to witness his energy and stamina. His show is so electric that even minutes into his performance, kids and adults of all ages are doing loud Tarzan roars, forming conga lines, and singing classic Disney songs from the top of their lungs. Outside of Disney, Bob also performs for Gives Kids the World, for the Orange County Library system, and for his local church in Orlando, and he continues to compose new music, now completing his 15th original album. In today's episode, I have the honor of chatting with Bob about his legacy at Disney, the origins of "Yehaa" Bob as a character and of his show at Walt Disney World, his musical compositions, and more. A very special thanks to Bob for lending three songs for us to share on this podcast episode as well, including his original song, "Near the Fire of Life" (played in the show intro), and his covers of the classic Disney songs, "Hakuna Matata" (originally written by Elton John with lyrics by Tim Rice for "The Lion King") and "Let's Go Fly a Kite" (originally written by Richard and Robert Sherman for "Mary Poppins"), both played at the very end of the episode. In today's episode of CineSoul, Jorge talks with Bob Jackson and Dominic Laing about the Paul Schrader 2018 film, First Reformed. ----------------- Each episode of CineSoul will appear on this Overthink feed once a month, so stay tuned for more film-related deep conversations with Jorge and his guests. Make sure you're subscribed to the network so you don't miss a single episode of our various shows on art, media, and culture. New episodes out twice a week! Until then, you can find us on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and you can subscribe to our podcasts here: iTunes, Stitcher, & Google.
