In 2004 few coming of age movies dared to be different or try new things. They were often filled with stereotypes, forced emotional moments, and the "transformation" of a beautiful, misunderstood person wearing glasses into a beautiful person without glasses. There is one movie that made us look at what we should do with our lives after college, analyze racial issues, and the importance of putting yourself out there. All while on the way to get something to eat. Welcome to Season 3, Episode 110 of Digital Dissection: Pop Culture Nerdity! It's a reunion! Twenty years after being his production assistant on a film set in Austin, TX, Kal Penn and I get a chance to sit down and catch up about it all.Kal Penn, is an American actor, author, academic lecturer and former White House staff member in the Barack Obama administration. You may know him from television shows such as House, Designated Survivor, Sunnyside, and How I Met Your Mother. He is also recognized for his performance in the film The Namesake and of course the Harold and Kumar series ( I personally still love Taj Mahal Badalandabad). Penn has taught at the University of Pennsylvania in the Cinema Studies Program as a visiting lecturerWe talk about it all from our first impressions, to those fantastic middle school years, to his job as a farmhand right before he went to UCLA. He talks about the meaning behind the Brown Catch-22, his journey with stereotyping in Hollywood, his experience going to India with President Barack Obama, and why he needed a mini-fridge in the White House. We of course bust out with some Gujarati (our native Indian language) which Kal definitely schools me on.His new memoir, You Can't Be Serious, is out and it's a fantastic read! There just wasn't enough time to give a shout out to all the uncles and aunties we loved growing up.....

In recent years we've seen a boom of Asian American actors in film and TV. But for decades, John Cho was practically the only one. He first came to fame in 2004 playing Harold in the Harold and Kumar films, a role that challenged many people's ideas about what a leading man could look like. He's built his career thoughtfully ever since, taking roles (Sulu in the Star Trek films, Spike Spiegel in Netflix's Cowboy Bebop) that don't play into negative stereotypes. The son of a minister, Cho was born in Seoul and moved to the States when he was six. He has just written his first book, Troublemaker, a middle grade novel about a 12-year-old Korean American boy's experience of the LA riots. In a candid and open conversation, Cho recalls his own experience of 사이구(SaIGu), his memories of growing up in the church and the bottled up anger he's often felt as an Asian American man. Juliana and Catherine also get to hear about Cho's love of Little House on the Prairie and how books helped him through his peripatetic childhood. Happy holidays! If there is one tradition we love it's Christmas movies around the holidays. Sometimes though, it's nice to watch something that is a little less than traditional Christmas fare… And we definitely have that here with these two stoner comedy “part 3” films that just happen to take place during Christmas! Haven't seen the other films in the series? Who cares! Jokes are jokes! So, let's light up (a nice Yule log fire), kick back, and dream of a “green” Christmas together!
Our Comedy in the 2000s retrospective wouldn't be complete without a healthy dose of transphobia and lighthearted racism! This week on the podcast, we're taking on a pair of stoner comedies that defined the decade's obsession with buddy comedies steeped in gay panic. First up it's "Dude, Where's My Car?" featuring a pre-"Punk'd" Ashton Kutcher and pre-"Bulletproof Monk" Seann William Scott as a pair of intensely stupid stoners who find themselves immersed in an alien invasion as they search for their car after one wild night. After that, we're jumping to the end of the decade for the second chapter in the "Harold and Kumar" franchise, "Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay," which sees the titular pair on an Americana travelogue after being racially profiled as terrorists on their way to Amsterdam. Join us as we discuss racist Asian caricatures in pop culture in the late 90s and 2000s, the 100% rotten canon of Ashton Kutcher, not being able to get Jerry O'Connell and getting stuck with his brother Charlie instead, giant alien tits, and "Harold and Kumar" kicking off the rehabilitation tour of George W. Bush while he was still in office. "Dude, Where's My Car?" is streaming on Amazon Prime and "Harold and Kumar" is available on HBOMax.

This week we are discussing "Harold and Kumar Escape Guantanamo Bay" which is sadly Jamie's 1st Harold and Kumar movie and I have seen this one a lot. We talked about how they were barely in Guantanamo Bay, NPH, the racist jokes, Rob Corddry crushing it, and so much more. This a video review that you can watch at sequelsonly.com/haroldandkumar2 The next sequel we are reviewing is “Pyscho Cop 2”, which is one sequel that is so bonkers and free on youtube, but more importantly, we interviewed Robert Shafer who most folks know as "Bob Vance" from "The Office". Robert talked about how he went from West Virginia to Hollywood, plus we talked about Pyscho Cop, his newer movie "Dick Dickster"(which I loved and lots more), Follow us on all social media @sequelsonly and our website is sequelsonly.com

Mark and Jon are all over this week’s early 2000’s stoner classic, Harold and Kumar go to White Castle. The film stars John Cho and Kal Penn who must drive pretty much all the way across Jersey to satisfy their munchies. Mark shares his own adventure to visit a White Castle and Jon finds a way to compare the movie to the Odyssey, as he is wont to do.
In honor of the national holiday 4/20, Stoner Movies is this week's theme. "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle" (2004) is about as "Stoner" as you get and didn't disappoint. Matt found it funnier than he thought it would be and Adam enjoyed it more on his second viewing. Both thought Neil Patrick Harris stole the show. "Inherent Vice" (2014) felt like director Paul Thomas Anderson was stoned when he wrote the adaptation for Thomas Pynchon's novel, because it was an incoherent mess that didn't work on so many levels. The show still loves PTA (Hard Eight and Magnolia), but neither of us can recommend this one. Next up, the Aftermath of War: "The Deer Hunter" (1978) and "Cherry" (2021).Thanks for listening!Contact the show: 24theroadshow@gmail.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/24theRoadShow

It's that time of year where watching Harold and Kumar just makes sense, so Don and Chuck do just that. Don lets Chuck gush about one of his all-time favorite silly, stupid comedies for far too long before they finally discuss themes of friendship, racism, and having someone in your life that pushes you to do the things you don't want to do. If we're being honest, this one meanders quite a bit, so we suggest you drink up first. Or, you know... well, you know. I discuss the blatant mass media psyop being waged against all Americans claiming the Biden win. The mass media cannot call the election, yet they are blasting the airwaves as if their call is legitimate. If possible, the mass media is loosing even more credibility while they engage in this brazen scheme. Then the great John Paul Rice (Film Producer, Hollywood insider) joins me to discuss the rapid fraud that he witnessed personally during the Bernie campaign and how he sees the entire fraudulent game being replayed by the DNC and the mass media machine. As I typically do, we discuss the big picture and what this really means to the United States and the world. In 2001, John landed a position at the Los Angeles film finance, sales and production company Senator International (which later became Mandate Pictures) led by industry veteran Joseph Drake (THE HUNGER GAMES, JUNO, THE GRUDGE, HAROLD AND KUMAR). Under Joe's leadership, John developed an interest in producing independent feature films. In 2008, Mr. Rice partnered with director Edgar Michael Bravo to form No Restrictions Entertainment and produced the critically acclaimed indie drama ONE HOUR FANTASY GIRL. The following year (2009), they produced the psychological drama THE MAGIC STONE and returned the next year (2010) as a duo for the dramatic thriller MOTHER'S RED DRESS. In 2012, Bravo and Rice created the compelling supernatural thriller MONSTER KILLER. All four films dealt with challenging social issues while telling an entertaining and original narrative story.
