In our final episode of 2023, Michael Arndt – the acclaimed writer of films like Little Miss Sunshine and Star Wars: The Force Awakens – drops by for a two-hour dissection of his script for Toy Story 3 –a Pixar sequel that went to infinity and beyond when it came to thrills, laughter and emotion.  Directed by past Script Apart guest Lee Unkrich, the 2010 film could have repeated the formula that made past the franchise's previous films a global phenomenon, making instant icons out of Woody, Buzz and their found-family of fellow play-things. Instead, it leapt forward in time to find Andy, the toys' owner, all-grown up and about to head to college, heaping huge existential questions on fans' beloved characters. If a toy is retired to an attic, never to be played with again, what is their reason to be? What does it mean to be outgrown by people you love, who no longer love you in return?If that sounds heavy for what is ostensibly a kids' tale, wait till we remind you that Toy Story 3 was a movie set mostly in a brutal toy internment camp that ends with our heroes about to be incinerated. That boldness is why many regard the film as being “peak Pixar” – and can you blame them? Toy Story 3 capped a remarkable run of hits for the animation studio that included Ratatouille in 2007, Wall-E in 2008 and Up in 2009. No wonder Michael and co felt emboldened to take risks on this third instalment of the franchise – risks that reaped incredible storytelling rewards.Michael was picked by Pixar – presumably via email or a phone call, rather than a giant mechanical claw like the ones in Pizza Planet – because few storytellers do grounded emotion and dysfunctional families like he does. At the onset of his career, across three days in May 2000, he'd written a screenplay about a family on a road trip to New Mexico that became a monster hit. Little Miss Sunshine earned the Virginia-born screenwriter a Best Original Screenplay Oscar in 2006 and catapulted him onto the radar of Pixar, whose brain trust would soon begin cooking up a story for a third movie in their Toy Story franchise.In the conversation you're about to hear, Michael breaks down the many early iterations of this movie, including an abandoned Toy Story 3 from before his time on the project, in which the toys travel to Taiwan after Buzz is shipped there following a global product recall on the toy. We get into the machinations of Lotso Huggin' Bear, how the story is deep down one about parenthood and of course, that traumatising moment our heroes hold hands, staring down certain death. We hebben het over de veelheid aan ‘Finding Nemo'-adaptaties, zoals het grappige ‘Turtle Talk with Crush' dat tegenwoordig viraal gaat op TikTok, of het gemakzuchtige ‘Crush's Coaster' in Parijs. Over hoe er een zoetrope verstopt zit aan de ingang van de Ratatouille-ride. Erwin legt uit waarom er zo weinig Pixar-attracties zijn en waarom deze niet altijd werken: Disney-verhalen spelen zich immers af in andere werelden, Pixarverhalen voornamelijk in de onze. En verder doet hij een warme oproep tot de rehabilitatie van ‘The Music of Pixar Live!', een concertshow in Disney's Hollywood Studios met de mooiste Pixar-scores. As the original Magic Kingdom and the only park Walt knew intimately and saw to completion, we as Disney lovers and lifers seem to have an inherent attachment to the place that inspires a soul-stirring, heart-soaring feeling every time we step beyond its gates. What's weird is that my couple of childhood trips were actually to Walt Disney World. I didn't visit Disneyland until decades later. But still, there's this unmistakable feeling of nostalgia that I think many of us find at Disneyland. We know that Magic lives Here. We don't need to have experienced it as children to feel it. It's so powerful here, that it brings forth that inner child, regardless of age. And, for me, there may be no place where I feel that inner child leaping forward more than in Tomorrowland. All around this space, there is an abundant joy -- laughter of current guests and echoes from family vacations long past. Waves from little hands flying rocket ships and faces alight with the wonder of new discovery, and in search of galaxies far, far, away. Even the techno-futuristic music seems to carry a nostalgic tune throughout the entire land. And though Tomorrowland is often classified as the place for thrill-seekers, there's something Here for those of us who enjoy a slower pace. The rooftop queue of the mighty Space Mountain, the sprawling retro-classic bandstand at the Tomorrowland Terrace, the lagoon at the reimagined submarine voyage…quiet spaces to pause and reflect. And it makes for great people watching too -- and listening! It's hard to explain Tomorrowland to someone who's never visited. Essentially, it's a dream that keeps on dreaming. A future that never was, but could someday be. But before we can get to Tomorrow, we have to immerse ourselves in the right now, because today holds all the Magic we need for this moment. Right here in Tomorrowland, where the future has arrived.

Disney Cream Cheese Pretzel (Lunching Pad at Magic Kingdom)Pretzel Ingredients:2 cups hot water1 TB sugar1 envelope (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast5 cups all-purpose flour1 TB saltNon-stick cooking spray2 TB baking soda1 egg, beatenCream Cheese Filling Ingredients:8 oz cream cheese1 cup powdered sugar1 1/4 tsp Mexican vanilla extract1 pinch saltDirections:Place hot water and sugar in a small bowl. Stir until sugar has dissolved. Mix in the yeast and let sit for 5 minutes. Combine the salt and flour in a large mixing bowl. Pour in the yeast liquid. Mix on low for 30 seconds with an electric mixer fitted with a dough hook. Continue to beat on medium speed until sides pull away from the bowl. If the dough is still sticky, add more flour (1 TB at a time). Make the cream cheese filling. Mix all ingredients with a mixer until creamy. Spoon filling into a gallon-size freezer bag. When ready to use, snip off the corner to make an icing bag.Transfer dough to a floured surface and knead until smooth. Place into an oiled bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Put in a warm area and let rise until doubled. (Typically takes around an hour.) Punch dough down and divide into 16 even pieces. Roll one piece of dough at a time into 18-inch strips. Roll the strip flat with a rolling pin until it is 1-inch wide. Pipe a thin strip of cream cheese filling down the center of the dough strip. Fold the ends over each other to seal in the filling. Twist into pretzel shapes.Fill a large pot with 2 inches of water. Stir in baking soda and heat on medium high. Place pretzels into water and poach for 1 minute. (This makes the pretzel a chewy texture.) Remove from water and place on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Brush pretzels with beaten egg and sprinkle on any toppings. Bake at 450 degrees Fahrenheit for 12-15 minutes until golden brown. Serve fresh & warm from the oven.
