Toy Story 3 might be Pixar's most emotional movie ever... but does it still hold up as a childhood staple? This week on Inside Quotes, Jeremy and Jonathan put Toy Story 3 through the IQ Test to find out. We revisit the unforgettable daycare prison break, Spanish Buzz, Ken's dream house, hidden Pixar Easter eggs, and some of the most quotable lines in the entire franchise. We also share our favorite moments, discuss the scenes that still make us emotional all these years later, and debate whether Toy Story 3 is the perfect ending to Andy's story. So grab your cowboy hat, avoid the caterpillar room, and join us as we answer the question: Does Toy Story 3 still hold up?   IQ Test Criteria: 0-6 Points = A Quack 7-9 Points = Staple of our childhood 10+ Points = STAPLIEST   ————————   Merch: Inside Quotes T-shirts, Hoodies, Stickers, and MUGS! https://www.teepublic.com/user/inside-quotes     Follow us on Instagram: @insidequotescast https://www.instagram.com/insidequotescast?utm_medium=copy_link     Follow us on Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@insidequotescast?_t=zp-8veehloiroa&_r=1   Subscribe on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@insidequotescast     Artwork by Bryce Bridgeman: @Groovybridge: https://www.instagram.com/groovybridge/     Questions, Comments or Feedback? Support The Channel By Getting Some REEL REJECTS Apparel! https://www.rejectnationshop.com/ In this highly anticipated movie review and reaction, Greg and Paige face an incredibly emotional, nostalgia-fueled rewatch that explores the absolute beauty of growing up, moving on, and the power of childhood imagination. We dissect the brilliant vocal performances of this legendary stellar main cast, starring Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan) delivering his definitive, deeply moving portrayal of the fiercely loyal Sheriff Woody, Tim Allen (The Santa Clause, Home Improvement) bringing unmatched charisma as the space ranger Buzz Lightyear, and Joan Cusack (School of Rock, In & Out) as the high-energy, empathetic cowgirl Jessie. We also unpack the phenomenal work from Ned Beatty (Deliverance, Network) as the strawberry-scented cult leader Lotso, Don Rickles as Mr. Potato Head, Estelle Harris as Mrs. Potato Head, Wallace Shawn (The Princess Bride) as the neurotic dinosaur Rex, John Ratzenberger as Ham, and Michael Keaton (Batman, Birdman) delivering absolute comedy gold as the shallow, fashion-obsessed Ken alongside Joni Benson as Barbie. Our hosts react to every pulse-pounding escape plan, hilarious visual gag, and tear-jerking milestone this film has to offer. We break down the absolute scale of the spectacular Western opening train sequence, the heartbreak of Andy's remaining toys accidentally getting tossed to the curb on garbage day, and their initial jaw-dropping arrival at Sunnyside Daycare. We unpack the sheer terror of the chaotic caterpillar room playtime, the hilarious prison breakout sequence featuring a brainwashed Buzz Lightyear stuck in Spanish mode, and Mr. Potato Head's desperate transformation into Mr. Tortilla Head. From the terrifyingly suspenseful security monkey watching the cameras to the raw, agonizing intensity of the furnace incinerator sequence where the toys choose to hold hands and face the end together, Greg and Paige break down why this specific entry hits like an absolute freight truck of emotion. Finally, we analyze the absolute perfection of the ending where Andy sits down on the grass to play with Bonnie one last time before saying a heartbreaking goodbye to his childhood pals. The children who watched Toy Story in 1995 were teenagers when Andy packed his boxes. That timing is not an accident, and it is worth asking how much of Toy Story 3's legacy belongs to the film itself and how much belongs to the audience that grew up alongside it. On today's Thirty Minute Reviews, Adam makes the case that Toy Story 3 is brilliant, moving, but the third best film in its own franchise.

Show Notes This week - the ultimate end to a trilogy that will still not be left alone - Toy Story 3. It's the end of an era with Andy, so what is next for our beloved toys? If our villain - who looks cuddly and smells like strawberries but has hate and hurt in his heart - gets his way, they will be sacrificed to toddlers. And if that doesn't work they will literally be incinerated. A children's movie that deals in such dark themes while simultaneously still feeling like a children's movie has become what Pixar is best at and this is the prime example.  Recommendations: Daredevil Born Again (Disney+) Next up: Tangled (2010) Email us at latecomers@gmail.com Our Facebook group is here for those who consent: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1754020081574479/

With our episode on Toy Story 2 fresh in our minds, the gang picks up where we left off with 2010's Toy Story 3, a film that cements itself as the conclusion to one of the best film trilogies of all time. With many years having passed between 2 and 3 both IRL and in-universe, we here on the Couch get to feel like we've grown up with Andy, and get hit with some of the best emotional payoff at the end of the film that we've ever seen: Andy goes to college, Woody finds new purpose with a new kid but understands the emotional weight of saying goodbye to Andy, and the acceptance of moving on from a journey that's offered so much to both Andy and the toys. There's so much to love about this film, whether it's Lotso as an antagonist, Woody's continued character growth, the gorgeous and continually improving animation quality, and the film's climax—so stick around and listen to us love it! “So long… partner.” Join your favourite TransAtlantic podcasting duo – Ian & Liam – as we stare mortality, memory, and molten doom right in the eye in our 283rd episode, covering Pixar's emotional rollercoaster Toy Story 3 (2010). We're trading poisoned apples for daycare drama and incinerator trauma as we ask whether this trilogy-closer really is the perfect goodbye: We are so very thankful for a new piece of kit that limited our downtime this week We talk about why Toy Story 3 might just be the best third act in any trilogy ever. Ian reflects on the passage of time, growing up, and how Pixar weaponised emotion in the final 20 minutes. Liam bravely tries to hold it together during that incinerator scene—and that goodbye with Andy. Is Lotso one of Pixar's greatest villains and what is it about him that Liam hates so much but Ian loves so much? We talk about daycare as dystopia, Big Baby as horror icon, why Mr. Pricklepants deserved more screen time and who exactly is watching these kids at the daycare? Why does this hit so hard for adults? Is it just about toys—or everything we leave behind? Ian breaks down the film's narrative structure and how it perfectly mirrors growing up and letting go. Want to write a great screenplay? Little Miss Sunshine writer Michael Arndt shares secrets from Pixar, Hollywood, and a decade of script doctoring! What We Discuss with Michael Arndt: Success in screenwriting often requires extreme persistence and resilience — Michael Arndt wrote 10 screenplays over 10 years before selling Little Miss Sunshine, and even then did about 100 drafts of that script before it was ready. The best stories often create a "tilted universe" where the protagonist is a response to or antidote to the negative values of their world (like Robin Hood emerging in response to an unjust system, or The Dude's laid-back nature contrasting with an aggressive world in The Big Lebowski). Audience feedback is crucial but challenging to balance — as Michael quotes Billy Wilder: "Individually they're idiots, but collectively they're a genius." You have to respect audience intelligence while still maintaining your creative vision. Great endings often work by creating a false binary (win/lose) and then revealing a surprising third option that exceeds audience expectations — like in Little Miss Sunshine where Olive neither wins nor loses but creates something entirely unexpected. Anyone can improve their storytelling by studying great stories and breaking them down systematically — Michael's own journey shows that storytelling is a craft that can be learned through careful analysis, practice, and continual refinement of understanding how stories work. His video essays on screenwriting (available on YouTube) offer concrete tools for developing these skills. And much more... Heralded as a beloved classic at the time of its release, the film (at the time) brought a close to the journey of the toys we had come to know and love on screen for fifteen years and their relationship with their owner, Andy. In our final episode of 2023, Michael Arndt – the acclaimed writer of films like Little Miss Sunshine and Star Wars: The Force Awakens – drops by for a two-hour dissection of his script for Toy Story 3 –a Pixar sequel that went to infinity and beyond when it came to thrills, laughter and emotion.  Directed by past Script Apart guest Lee Unkrich, the 2010 film could have repeated the formula that made past the franchise's previous films a global phenomenon, making instant icons out of Woody, Buzz and their found-family of fellow play-things. Instead, it leapt forward in time to find Andy, the toys' owner, all-grown up and about to head to college, heaping huge existential questions on fans' beloved characters. If a toy is retired to an attic, never to be played with again, what is their reason to be? What does it mean to be outgrown by people you love, who no longer love you in return? If that sounds heavy for what is ostensibly a kids' tale, wait till we remind you that Toy Story 3 was a movie set mostly in a brutal toy internment camp that ends with our heroes about to be incinerated. That boldness is why many regard the film as being “peak Pixar” – and can you blame them? Toy Story 3 capped a remarkable run of hits for the animation studio that included Ratatouille in 2007, Wall-E in 2008 and Up in 2009. No wonder Michael and co felt emboldened to take risks on this third instalment of the franchise – risks that reaped incredible storytelling rewards.Michael was picked by Pixar – presumably via email or a phone call, rather than a giant mechanical claw like the ones in Pizza Planet – because few storytellers do grounded emotion and dysfunctional families like he does. At the onset of his career, across three days in May 2000, he'd written a screenplay about a family on a road trip to New Mexico that became a monster hit. Little Miss Sunshine earned the Virginia-born screenwriter a Best Original Screenplay Oscar in 2006 and catapulted him onto the radar of Pixar, whose brain trust would soon begin cooking up a story for a third movie in their Toy Story franchise. In the conversation you're about to hear, Michael breaks down the many early iterations of this movie, including an abandoned Toy Story 3 from before his time on the project, in which the toys travel to Taiwan after Buzz is shipped there following a global product recall on the toy. We get into the machinations of Lotso Huggin' Bear, how the story is deep down one about parenthood and of course, that traumatising moment our heroes hold hands, staring down certain death.
