As a senator and a member of the Joe Biden Administration, Vice President Kamala Harris has advocated for tribes and equity for Native Americans, explicitly promising to work with tribes to restore improperly taken lands, defending the Indian Child Welfare Act, and addressing Missing and Murdered Indigenous people. But her track record as a California attorney general is more complicated. In his short time in office, J.D. Vance has mocked Indigenous Peoples' Day and spoke against renaming a national forest in a way that positioned Native Americans as “the enemy”. We'll get some insights into these two candidates whose positions were just elevated in the presidential election. GUESTS Victor Rocha (Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians), owner and editor of Pechanga.net Governor Stephen Roe Lewis (Gila River Indian Community) Matthew Fletcher (Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians), law professor at the University of Michigan Law School and author of the Turtle Talk blog Marin Webster Denning (Oneida), cultural speaker and educator

Dr. Paul Gerrard, an amateur herpetologist is giving a turtle talk at the Elizabethtown Sports Park 6/23/24 at 2pm. The public is invited.
Take a leisurely stroll through all of Disney's California Adventure. It quickly became clear that I wasn't going to get the recording I set out to caoture, as this particular day seemed challenging to get the sounds I often seek, but it remains a great snapshot in time. This is truly an episode where headphones will greatly enhance your experience. It's a pleasant late Spring evening in a bustling California Adventure, the sun is casting evening shadows but there's still ample light for a couple of hours. Entering the turnstiles we are welcomed by well-acclimated guests who have been around for much of the day already. The chatter is more exuberant than early morning hours, muffling the familiar tunes of the area loop. As we venture further down Buena Vista Street and steer toward Hollywood Land, the unmistakable voices of beloved Pixar characters weave into the ambiance – it's Pixar Fest, after all!Over in Hollywood Land, Club Pixar has taken festive control of the back area. We check out the Pixar shorts playing in the former entrance to Hollywood and Dine, but dodge the loud music in the backlot and head back to the Animation Building for some relaxation.Understandably so, the fan-favorite spot was busy with Animation Academy and Turtle Talk getting out at the same time, so we scurry through the always enjoyable Off the Page and then head toward Avenger's Campus. After a leisurely stroll through the land, we emerge onto the Parade Corridor. A quick detour takes us to the cascading wonder of Grizzly Peak's back waterfall to only stand off to the side to take in the Pixar Pier Parade Corridor mix before heading through Cars Land. There we take in the normal ambiance including a cycle of Luigi's.We then make our way through San Fransokyo Square to catch a little J-pop and then make our way through Pixar Pier. Strangely, there were a few areas where music is normally playing that were just simply off.Later, we catch a portion of the Pixar Fest parade, Better Together. A few moments of lively jubilation from the parade, it was time to relax through the best means I know… Redwood Creek Challenge Trail area music. While the play area was under refurbishment, the speakers still provide the somber, softer melodies that can bring anyone to a peaceful state. We then pick ourselves up and pass by Grizzly River Run and jaunt through Grizzly Peak Airfield before exiting the park for the evening. I hope you enjoy your evening tour.Audio recorded on Friday 5/24/2024 around 5:15PM. --------------------Donate to the Show:Help keep Park Sensory going with a one-time donation. This time every year for the past 30 years the Sac and Fox Nation takes a day to celebrate a momentous U. S. Supreme Court decision affirming the tribe's right to issue vehicle license plates to its citizens. The tribal tags are an important expression of sovereignty and it generates revenue for education and other programs. Dozens of tribes in and outside of Oklahoma now extend their authority to motor vehicle tags. But Oklahoma tribes say that authority is under fire like never before. Tribal citizens are having to defend what tribal officials say is an increase in targeted stops and fines by non-tribal law enforcement. We'll talk about celebrating a victory for sovereignty and the constant effort required to keep it. GUESTS Gregory H. Bigler (Euchee, enrolled in the Muscogee Nation), author, tribal judge in Oklahoma, and attorney Matthew Fletcher (Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians), law professor at the University of Michigan Law School and author of the Turtle Talk blog Audrey Rose Lee (Sac & Fox Nation), second chief of the Sac & Fox Nation Robert Gifford (Cherokee Nation), Native American law attorney and tribal court judge

The National Congress of American Indians' newly-elected president Mark Macarro delivers his first address, highlighting the accomplishments and challenges of Native nations. How much do you know (and remember) about Native people and events from 2023? Now is the chance to test your knowledge of things you might have heard about by listening to Native America Calling over the past year. What name was Buffy Sainte-Marie given at birth? Which justices dissented in the U.S. Supreme Court's historic decision on ICWA? Name a river in California where dams are being demolished to benefit salmon. Those are the types of trivia questions related to Native issues that callers can answer and have a chance to compete for one of three prizes. GUESTS Matthew Fletcher (Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians), law professor at the University of Michigan Law School and author of the Turtle Talk blog Debra Krol (enrolled member of the Xolon Salinan Tribe), Indigenous Affairs Reporter for The Arizona Republic, reporting on the intersection of climate, commerce, and culture Vincent Schilling (Akwesasne Mohawk), editor and founder of NativeViewPoint.com and a certified Rotten Tomatoes critic

A non-Native woman in Alaska refuses to abide by a tribal court order to turn an Alaska Native foster child over to the girl's family members. It's a blatant disregard of tribal sovereignty even after a notable re-affirmation of the Indian Child Welfare Act by the U.S. Supreme Court. The woman took custody of the child, named Chanel, at the request of the girl's father, right before he was convicted of murdering Chanel's mother during a domestic dispute. We'll look at that case, as well as efforts to bolster ICWA compliance elsewhere. GUESTS Antonia Commack (Iñupiaq from the Native Village of Shungnak), best friend of Baby Chanel's mother Bossii Opsal (Iñupiaq from the Native Village of Koyuk), Sacramento State University student and social media influencer Simona Bearcub (citizen of the Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes), community defense and land defender Matthew Fletcher (Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians), law professor at the University of Michigan Law School and author of the “Turtle Talk” blog Sydney Tarzwell, staff attorney for the Native American Rights Fund

What nation is the setting for the show "Reservation Dogs"? Which federal appeals court sent an ICWA challenge to the U.S. Supreme Court? In how many sports did Jim Thorpe compete? Those are the types of trivia questions you might know the answers to if you've been paying attention to Native issues in 2022. Today on Native America Calling, Shawn Spruce presents the Native American Trivia Show where our listeners can compete for prizes (don't get too excited) and bragging rights about key events from the year with special guests Debra Krol (enrolled member of the Xolon Salinan Tribe), Indigenous affairs reporter for The Arizona Republic reporting on the intersection of climate, commerce, and culture; Matthew Fletcher (Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians), law professor at the University of Michigan Law School and author of the “Turtle Talk” blog; and Vincent Schilling (Akwesasne Mohawk), editor of NativeViewPoint.com and a certified Rotten Tomatoes critic.

Each side presented their oral arguments Wednesday to the U.S. Supreme Court for the most serious challenge to the Indian Child Welfare Act in recent memory. The decision in Haaland v. Brackeen will be a major force in the future of ICWA and the scope of tribal sovereignty. Today on Native America Calling, Shawn Spruce analyzes the legal debate from a Native perspective with Matthew Fletcher (Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians), law professor at the University of Michigan Law School and author of the “Turtle Talk” blog; independent journalist Suzette Brewer (citizen of the Cherokee Nation); and Dr. Sarah Kastelic (Alutiiq), director of the National Indian Child Welfare Association.
Tribal courts are asserting their ability to mete out justice and work toward healing. Many tribal courts are being recognized for restorative justice and for providing a means to address wrongs that go unresolved in other courts. Today on Native America Calling, Shawn Spruce speaks with Matthew Fletcher (Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians), law professor at the University of Michigan Law School and author of the “Turtle Talk” blog, and Matt Johnson (enrolled in the Cayuse, Umatilla, and Walla Walla; the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation), court director of the Umatilla Tribal Court.
Just as courts are working through jurisdictional boundaries for the other tribes in Oklahoma, a district court judge determined the Osage Nation reservation does not exist. The judge asserts Congress disestablished the Osage reservation. Lawyers for the tribe and the criminal defendant in question promise to take the issue to a federal appeals court. It's part of the ongoing legal push-and-pull in Oklahoma over criminal jurisdiction that has far-reaching implications. Today on Native America Calling, Shawn Spruce speaks with Billy Keene (Osage), Osage Nation Congress member; Elizabeth Homer (Osage), attorney and associate justice on the Osage Nation Supreme Court; and Matthew Fletcher (Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians), law professor at the University of Michigan Law School and author of the “Turtle Talk” blog.

The U.S. Supreme Court has officially overturned Roe v. Wade, a decision that protected the right for women to choose to have an abortion. The decision sparked protests and praise on either side of the political divide. When a conservative Supreme Court can revisit and overturn an important decision like Roe v. Wade, how likely is it they'll revisit cases like McGirt or those which affect Two-Spirit rights or tribal sovereignty? Wednesday on Native America Calling, Shawn Spruce talks with legal experts Matthew Fletcher (Ottawa and Chippewa), law professor at the University of Michigan Law School and author of the “Turtle Talk” blog; Ann Tweedy, professor at the University of South Dakota School of Law; and Melody McCoy (Cherokee), staff attorney for the Native American Rights Fund about how Indian Country is affected by decisions of the Supreme Court—and could be affected by future decisions.

The Seas with Nemo and Friends opened at Epcot in 1986 as The Living Seas Pavilion. The original version of this Walt Disney World attraction took guests to the depths of the ocean via hydrolators to an underwater research facility known as SeaBase Alpha. Up until 2005, the pavilion featured the world's largest saltwater tank, home to 3,000 oceanic creatures representing 200 species. Between 2003 and 2007, the pavilion began to transform to The Seas with Nemo and Friends as the Imagineers added Turtle Talk with Crush, replaced the original seacab omnimover ride with an updated Finding Nemo experience, and replaced the hydrolators and preshow with an expanded queue and ride experience. In this podcast episode, we discuss the history of The Living Seas Pavilion, including early concepts, and its ultimate transformation to today's attraction experience. On this week's show we spotlight two very important pieces of Imagineering. Well, one important one and one is Turtle Talk With Crush. Up first, Bev dives deep into the internet and catches a wave to learn all about Turtle Talk With Crush and share that bounty of the Sea with all of us. Then, Jeremy finds his way around the soon-to-be demolished Polynesian Village Resort to bring us the history of the music in this area. ---------------- Support the show!
