As a long time host of Play School, Luke's probably spent more time entertaining kids than any of us ever will! But beyond that, he's an amazingly accomplished actor… from getting his start on the kids show Lift Off! back in the early 90s, to being a regular on the awesome Redfern Now and more recently in the big budget adaption of The Artful Dodger on Disney+, not to mention a tonne of amazing theatre over the years. Luke is super generous and frank in this chat, talking openly about what it was like to have a kid really young, the powerful role his mum played in his life, and also talking honestly about his new blended family, the amazing joy that has brought him and his two sons and the deep love he has for his step-daughters... but also some of the unique challenges they have all had to navigate. As you'll hear, Luke brings such positivity and fun to his parenting, but it's also obvious he understands that tenacity and sacrifice is a big part of it too… We get the feeling Luke leaves it all on the field when it comes to dadding. It was beautiful to hear him talk with such passion, and we are sure you'll agree. PS - we recorded this episode a while ago, and Luke has since tied the knot and made his blended family official! Huge congrats to Luke!! Luke is in a bunch of stuff at the moment, including The Artful Dodger on Disney + and you'll soon find him in the upcoming season 2 of SCRUBLANDS on Stan (and of course on Play School) Thanks as always to you guys for listening - you can get in touch at howotherdadsdad.com — And big thanks to HERTZ who are back as our exclusive sponsor in season 3. 5–Minute Parenting: Tips to Help You Raise Competent, Godly Kids.
Send us a Text Message.Welcome to another episode of 5 minute parenting. Today, I have a special guest, Holly Debella McCarthy. She's a dedicated educator, an accomplished author, and a passionate advocate for child development and education. She's a former special education teacher, a school administrator, and university professor. Holly now writes full time, and she creates resources supporting parents and educators. Her Dilly Duck and Friends series features three award-winning children's picture books, and it highlights the themes of kindness, teamwork, and environmental awareness. Here are some of the key takeaways from the episode:1. Establish Daily Routines: Parents can help their children transition from summer schedules to school routines by gradually adjusting bedtime, lunch, and snack times. Practicing opening lunch boxes and containers independently can also build confidence.2. Practice Expected School Behaviors: It's beneficial to familiarize children with expected school behaviors such as waiting, good listening, and lining up. Parents can also reach out to the school or teacher to understand classroom rules.3. Play School at Home: Role-playing as the teacher and student can provide a fun way to model expected school behaviors and reduce school anxiety.4. Countdown to School Calendar: Using a calendar to count down the days to the first day of school can help children understand the concept of time and build excitement.Visit Holly's website where she shares practical parenting strategies and resources. Join me as I learn a little more on what the Reggio Emilia Approach looks like with Jayda Rivera, the visionary behind Reggio Roots. With her work at a Playschool inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, she aspires to nurture, develop, and guide individuals and educators who share her ideologies. Key Takeaways: Understanding the Reggio Emilia Approach: Jayda talks with Kristen about how the Reggio Emilia approach emphasizes the image of the child as an active participant in their own learning. It is child-led, similar to Montessori and play-based learning, focusing on the natural development and expression of children. Environment as an Extension of Home: They talk about how in Reggio Emilia-inspired schools, the environment is designed to feel like a second home. Learn some ways to incorporate things into your space that make it feel cozy. Importance of Observation: Jayda highlights the significance of constantly observing and taking notes on children's behavior and interactions. This helps educators understand each child deeply and tailor the learning environment and activities to their needs and interests. Holistic Child Expression: Jayda and Kristen talk about the idea of the "hundred languages of children" suggesting that children have numerous ways to express themselves beyond verbal communication. Educators should provide various outlets for expression, including art, music, movement, and play. If you aren't familiar with or have ever been interested in learning more about the Reggio Emilia Approach, this is a great episode to get more info! In 1988, educational programming aimed towards the preschool demographic on the ABC was handled by a mere two shows – Sesame Street, which was produced in America, and Play School, our homegrown production. These were staples on the Australian children's entertainment landscape and had remained beloved by Australian children for more than twenty years. There were some who were not content with one single Australian offering for our youth and with the help of a little puppet (which some would later describe as nightmare fuel), they would present a new offering for Aussie kids.Join Holly and Matthew as they examine the world of EC and the memories his horrible, blank face stirs up.
Rachael Coopes is an author, an actress, a yoga expert, a presenter on beloved kids show Playschool and just an all-round lovely like-minded Francophile. Recently I have been reading her book Paris For Beginners and I absolutely love it! I'm not sure why, but every time I sat down to read it, I needed to pair the reading with a glass of wine! It felt like a celebration each time and a petit escape to France for me. In her 20s Rach moved to France for a couple of years to study theatre. She describes her time in Paris back then as being on the precipice of the next phase of her life. It is often a stage for many of us where we're about to be what I like to call "full-blown adults". Then last year Rach returned to Paris after the world started to open up post-Covid. Her book gives us an insight into her world and the manner in which Paris has impacted her as a mini-adult in 2004 and then again in 2022. Her experiences resonated with me and brought to the fore my own memories of Paris as I was reading. I've often talked about feeling a homesickness for France even though I've never lived there. Rach has now finally put a word to that for me: hiraeth, which is a Welsh word which has no direct translation, but it describes a longing, homesickness, yearning and nostalgia for a place. That describes my relationship with France when I am in Australia perfectly! Rach and I lamented the changes to Paris with globalisation taking hold in France as it does everywhere, but it was wonderful to share with her the things that we were thrilled to see stay the same. Whilst some of the older, authentic, quintessentially French parts of Paris now seem a bit more polished and sparklier, the joie de vivre experienced by visiting France or even chatting about it, remains. As Rachael says, somehow in Paris they manage to take what is ordinary and make it extraordinary... take the simple and turn it into something breathtaking.**Louise Prichard is the host of the Loulabelle's FrancoFiles podcast.**Other Loulabelle's links:FrancoFile Fix on YouTubeLoulabelle's FrancoFiles Spotify Playlist Loulabelle's FrancoFiles InstagramLoulabelle's FrancoFiles website
