Nine's hit show Married At First Siggt (MAFS) pitches itself as an "experiment" in relationships. But there are 'rules' of the experiment that are problematic when it comes to domestic and family violence. Some of the behaviours depicted on the show, and how they are health-related, are also raising concerns from experts. National Director of the National Women's Safety Alliance, Katherine Berney, joins the podcast to discuss these issues, noting the controlling behaviours and emotional redemption arcs that are being depicted, and the messages these send to the audience on domestic violence. Ridsdale was convicted eight separate times over the sexual abuse of 70 known victim survivors – with the most recent sentencing being in 2023. The impact of his abuse – on victim survivors, on the reputation of the church, and on Australian society – cannot be understated. 98 women had been killed by violence in 2024, at the time of publishing. We know this, thanks to the tireless work of Sherele Moody, who runs the Australian Femicide Watch. The Bondi Junction attacker – Joel Cauchi – killed 5 women and one male security guard. The majority of those injured were also women. The NSW Police Commissioner says it's obvious he was targeting women. This attack may not have been declared an act of terrorism – but it certainly is terrifying, particularly for women.David Speers speaks to Australia's Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Commissioner Micaela Cronin about whether this aspect of the horrific attack is likely to bring about any policy change. If this conversation raises concerns for you:1800 Respect National Helpline: 1800 737 732Men's Referral Service: 1300 766 491Lifeline (24-hour crisis line): 131 114Victims of Crime Helpline: 1800 819 817Full Stop Australia: 1800 385 578

I told you about the multiple romantic partners and children their father, John Edwards, abused and manipulated over the years, the various complaints against John of domestic violence and stalking, and how, despite all that, he was able to obtain permits and licenses to both shoot and own multiple firearms in New South Wales, Australia. In this episode, I'll tell you about how John Edwards' diabolical preparations led up to his most horrific act; how he carried out the brutal murder of Jack and Jenny on July 5, 2018; the devastation John left in his wake; and how the incredibly thorough coroner's inquest into this terrible crime exposed the failures of the systems and individuals who could have prevented it.This is part two of the infuriating story of Jack and Jennifer Edwards. On July 5, 2018, 13-year-old Jennifer Edwards got off the bus and walked eight minutes to get to her home in West Pennant Hills, a suburb of Sydney, Australia. Jenny had no idea that her father, 67-year-old John Edwards, was following her in a car he rented so she wouldn't recognize him. When Jenny arrived at home, John pulled into the driveway and chased her inside the house with a handgun. Jenny fled to her brother's bedroom, where she and 15-year-old Jack huddled under his computer desk, terrified, as their own father stormed in and fired multiple shots directly into his helpless children's bodies. This is the story of two kids whose mother did everything she could to protect them from the man she left after years of psychological and physical abuse. It's also the story of a family who was catastrophically failed by multiple systems that were in place to prevent horrific events like Jack and Jenny's murders from occurring, and of a man who, despite leaving decades of red flags in his wake, still managed to secure the permits and licenses he needed to buy multiple guns. This is part one of the infuriating story of Jack and Jennifer Edwards. Content warning: This episode discusses details of sexual assault, please reach out to the resources listed below for help if you are in need.  One of the country's most anticipated criminal trials got underway this week, with former Liberal staffer Brittany Higgins taking her alleged rapist to court over an incident in Parliament House in 2019. But getting to this point hasn't been an easy road for anyone involved and for many survivors of sexual assault, even getting to have their day in court is too far out of their reach.  In today's episode, we look at how the criminal justice system is not set up for victims of sexual violence and what needs to be done to make the system more balanced for both the alleged victim and their accused.  Subscribe to Mamamia GET IN TOUCH Feedback? Lovely yayborhood, I hope your June is going well so far. In case you need it, a little reminder of last week's quote of the yay – if you aren't where you thought you'd be as we approach the middle of the year (which as always, has crept up outrageously quickly), it is impossible to fall behind in your own life as your pathway is on its own timetable. From my conversations over the past few weeks, a lot of us are still feeling a bit of an emotional hangover from the past few years but are quite hard on ourselves about letting it show now that there's a bit more normality in life. If that's you, stop that right now – you've been through a lot and it takes time to restore your sense of balance… Speaking of balance, today's episode is a bit of a hybrid between #yaysofourlives and a regular interview - it started as one to spread awareness of an important yayborhood movement but then morphed into the other because our guest's pathyay is interesting in itself. It's a little heavier than our normal episodes so just a little content warning – we do discuss domestic violence and other content that may be triggering or disturbing so please take care and there's a list of resources below. It's structured a little differently because there was so much to cover and I thought I'd play around a bit to make sure we highlighted the most important stuff. As you know, we are all about lightness and finding joy but also feel it's important to acknowledge the facets of life that might obstruct your ability to do so, so that nobody feels alone or so that a resource might reach one person who needs it who might not otherwise have had that information. To that end, I am honoured to introduce you to our guest for today – the National Director of White Ribbon Australia, Allan Ball. You know I love to follow people's pathyays, and Alan has certainly had an interesting one. We talk all things White Ribbon, as well as his journey from early beginnings as a school counsellor to working across rural communities, the NDIS, LGBTQIA+ organisations and youths struggling with drug abuse. So, there's a little bit of lots of things, but a lot of very important things too. Sexuality, consent and pornography might not be the first topic of conversation we'd raise at a dinner party. But perhaps we should!  --- Issues around consent, pornography and sexuality are a minefield to navigate for young people today and sometimes it's hard to find helpful places to go to find help. Daniel Principe, Youth Advocate and Educator at Collective Shout, is one source of information and encouragement for young people and his work is hitting a nerve. What are ways to help young women and men flourish together when pornography and objectification are such powerfully warping influences and so hard to counteract. Daniel Principe is out in schools offering a different way to think and to be, and young people are lapping this message up.  Listen to Dan tell something of his story, his passion for the subject and why he thinks there are things that can be done to help people find healthy and life-giving relationships that will serve both individuals and the common good.    Despite the darkness of the subject matter, this is an uplifting and optimistic conversation. --- www.collectiveshout.org Last of the Romans: Reimagining Masculinity, restoring virtue  1800 Respect or 1800 737 732 Men's Referral Service or 1300 766 491 Lifeline or 13 11 14

In today's special episode of our podcast, we felt a calling to deviate from our usual content and shine some attention to domestic violence. Earlier today, Tracey received a text from a client who needed to chat urgently. As Tracey has mentioned before, she has the privilege of working with people who have and do live with tremendous and unimaginable traumas. Kaitlin is one and today she said enough. Today she said I am ready.Spirit immediately guided Tracey to ask her to share her story via the podcast. Part of what a spiritual journey involves is an awareness that your pain is not just yours and therefore does not just serve you. If you are a healer blueprint, another HUGE part of it, is that your role as a healer will almost always be directly related to your pain.Kaitlin rang Tracey to tell her is ready, she joins us today to speak to, educate us on and move forward with graceful courage. In Australia- 43 women were killed in 2021.
