The 365 Days of Astronomy, the daily podcast of the International Year of Astronomy 2009
From January 1, 2009. This week we find out when stars get torn apart from gravity, how we can see supermassive black holes, how liquid water could have existed on Mars in the past, and much more. - Is there a “stellar” Roche Limit for binary stars? - Why are black holes seen as bright areas in astronomical images? - How could there have been water on Mars in the past? - Are there lots of jobs out there for prospective astronomers? - What evidence do we have that the Universe was small, hot and dense just before the Big Bang? - What legal issues are there for astronomy and space exploration? - Why don't planets “twinkle”? We've added a new way to donate to 365 Days of Astronomy to support editing, hosting, and production costs. Just visit: https://www.patreon.com/365DaysOfAstronomy and donate as much as you can! This is a unique episode as it's a bit of a reunion of the band Cedros that I was a part of about 10 years ago. On Friday, November 5th, Where The Living Room Used To Be is releasing the album we made back in 2011 - entitled The Red Knight - that never actually came out on limited-edition lathe-cut vinyl 7", cassette with exclusive bonus tracks, and digital download. Caleb, Phil, and I got together to talk about our experiences in the band, working with Daryl Rabidoux to make this album, and some of the memorable shows we played during our time as a band. Interlude song order: "Roche Limit" by Cedros (from The Red Knight) "Lost Sleep" by Cedros (from The Red Knight) "Remedy" by Cedros (from The Red Knight) If you dig some of the songs clips you hear please consider picking up the record at livingroomutb.bandcamp.com. Thanks! // Interview recorded October 28th, 2021 via Zoom // Intro music by Cedros // Hosted by James Toomey // /// If you enjoy the episode please leave a rating or review wherever you're listening right now! ///
More than 10 years ago I woke up the day I was supposed to go to Tony Robbins and wanted to change my mind. My mom and I registered for Tony Robbins UPW (Unleash the Power Within) and I hit an upper limit and was looking for any and all reasons NOT TO GO. I was using the tools against myself. I thought that “it was a sign” that I shouldn't go. Well...we chose to go, and thank God we did. My life got better. This episode is all about how those dang Upper Limits can kill your dreams and how to be aware of them when they show up and disguise themself as “a tool”. They are not a tool to help you...they are aware of an upper limit. In this episode:You will discover what an upper limit can look like I explain how we can use the tools we learn against ourselves and our dreams. You will learn how we talk ourselves out of creating more for our lives when we hit an upper limit. Experience the interconnectivity of music and social and political spoken word in four movements for narrator, French horn, oboe, and piano. On this episode, J. Bradley Minnick interviews poet and artist Terry Wright about this performance piece he titles “Iterations.” This project includes Wright’s poetry and visual art, as well as music composed by Daniel De Togni and performed by Lorraine Duso Kitts and Kazuo Murakami on piano. The four featured poems in the piece are "At the Beach," "Inside the Roche Limit," “Deconstructed Canary,” and “Ripley." These poems interrogate the social and political climate of the Obama and Trump years through a visceral, aggressive mashup of found artifacts from deep within internet search engines. Terry Wright is a writer and artist who lives in Little Rock. He’s written seven books and chapbooks of poetry, and his work has appeared widely in publications ranging from McSweeney’s to Rolling Stone . His art is also widely seen in venues like Full Bleed
This is episode features a couple of interviews done on the first day of this year’s C2E2 convention in Chicago from February 28th – March 1st. First up is my chat with award winning writer Michael Moreci and Impact Theory founder and co-founder of Quest Nutrition, Tom Bilyeu, talking about the release of the sci-fi comic book series Hexagon. Moreci is known for comics titles like Wasted Space, The Plot, Roche Limit, Archangel 8, and Curse. Hexagon is a nostalgic coming of age story reminiscent of the Last Starfighter, coupled with epic Star Wars like galaxy adventures. It’s the second series from publishing studio Impact Theory (after Neon Future) and initially slated for five issues. Purchase Hexagon: comics.impacttheory.com Follow Tom Bilyeu: Web: impacttheory.com Follow Michael Moreci: Web: michaelpmoreci.com Also, we have author Rita Woods joining us on Fresh is the Word, author of the book Remembrance. In her debut title, Remembrance is a historical fiction novel that tackles issues of slavery, legacy, the power of womanhood, and the lingering effects of racism over the span of centuries. Before we started to chat, I learned that Woods is originally from Detroit, so we talked about her memories growing up in the city. We also talked about Remembrance, her motivation behind writing this story, and what being “black” really means. Rita Woods is a family doctor and the director of a wellness center. When she’s not busy working or writing Dr. Woods spends time with her family or at the Homer Glen library where she serves on the Board of Trustees. This week’s guest is Michael Moreci, the co-writer of The Plot, coming soon from Vault Comics. Michael wrote this with Tim Daniel as part of Vault’s new annual horror imprint, Nightfall. I got a look at the first issue and it’s pretty awesome. There’s already some great buzz about it too so be sure to check it out when the first issue debuts on September 25th. I’ve followed Michael’s career for some time. He first popped up on my radar with Hoax Hunters, a series he co-wrote with Steve Seeley a few years ago. Since then he’s played in the sci-fi / horror space with some great titles like Roche Limit, Burning Fields, and a personal favorite, Curse. Michael can be found at his official website, MichaelPMoreci.com. Be sure to sign up for his email newsletter too. He’s also on Twitter and Instagram as @MichaelMoreci. Let us just start by saying that Mike and Kelsey barely speak English, and we are very sorry. Comic Carnival Community Calendar 2/16 - David Reddick returns! 12-6pm David will be signing the newly released collected edition of his comic Intelligent Life. 3/6 - Michael Moreci will be doing an in-store signing. Come say hi and ask him about Wasted Space, Roche Limit, and Star Wars Adventures! 4/10 - Stuart Sayger doing an in-store signing for his covers of the upcoming KISS: END comics!
That's right, I hijacked the show notes so I could title this episode with the name of my other podcast. So Ha Ha. Also in this episode, jokes go wrong, fun is had, and Chip Zdarsky drops us a message about his upcoming run on Daredevil. Upcoming Events - 1/26 Derwin Lester from Divided By Zero books will be back in the store to promote their really cool products and talk about self-publishing 1/30 Writer Michael Moreci will be IN STORE to sign your copies of Wasted Space, Star Wars Adventures, Roche Limit, and I will try not to ask him about the Hoax Hunters TV show!
This episode’s question is: what is the Roche limit? If you have feedback or a topic suggestion you can email us.

Comic writer Michael Moreci (Roche Limit, Burning Fields) joins the show this week for a doozy of an episode, as the pair dives deep into Moreci's work, the comic industry, and...Star Wars? That's right. The pair talks about what's next for his sci-fi book Roche Limit, how film influences his writing, how to get and keep the attention of comic readers and retailers, the importance of being different in an increasingly large industry, personal branding, the struggle of quality of work versus name recognition when it comes to sales, sales vs. internet hype, why he and a bunch of collaborators made their own Star Wars comics, and then they close with a spoiler-rific discussion about Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It's a big talk, but an entertaining and interesting one.

Transcript: All ring systems in the solar system have outer edges that are somewhere between 1.8 and 2.5 times the planet radius from the center of the planet. What is particular about this ratio and how does it arise? The answer was derived in the mid-nineteenth century by the French mathematician Edward Roche. He calculated that the edge of planetary rings is defined by tidal forces. If we consider the gravity force between particles composing a planetary ring, the Roche limit, as it's called, is defined by the distance in which the tidal force caused by the planet on the particles equals the gravity force between them. Therefore beyond the Roche limit rings cannot exist because the tidal force is too large.

Typically a monthly event, fellow bloggers for the local edition of the site gather up to hang out face to face in order to know thy fellow contributers. Rebecca joined the group of authors earlier this month. As her guest, I brought along the recording equipment to kind of document the occasion, but more so to meet more people that call Vancouver home and like to blog about it as much as we do. This is a long episode, but there was a lot of interesting stories and comments that I just didn’t feel like editing out. Only one piece of music featured in this one, but I used a variety of music from Vate, Troubled Hubble, Sebadoh, and John Vanderslice to bridge between some of the segments. This is the first time I have done anything like this, and I had a lot of fun. Feedback is more than welcome!
