In this episode of Rock is Lit we dive deep into the visceral and tumultuous world of author GenXCore's debut novel, ‘California Roadkill'. Explore the harrowing journey of three societal outliers as they navigate the shadows of violence, homelessness, and the haunting residue of addiction. From the gritty streets of Los Angeles to the soothing breezes of coastal California, the novel is an odyssey of self-discovery set against the backdrop of the Golden State. GenXCore and I delve into the multifaceted layers of the narrative, touching on the struggles of an adjunct teacher, whose face bears the scars of a student's rebellion against a bad grade, and two of his former punk rock bandmates, one of whom is battling addiction and destitution, the other of whom thinks he's found the cure to craving and compulsion. The intertwining of punk rock music and culture amplifies the story's intensity, offering a powerful soundtrack that resonates with the characters' experiences and the broader societal commentary within the novel. In many ways Mae Simpson is a musical chameleon performing a very soulful ballad followed by a hard rockin' mover and shaker. She brings much to the table with her experience and has much to share about music making in the Midwestern United States. If Joe-Bob Briggs were here, he'd say "Check 'er Out!!"

Tiden borde ha hunnit ikapp Pete Rock flera varv.

Ben Edwards of rock, soul, and blues band the Rainbreakers, chats to Trace about all things Rainbreakers. Edwards discusses the new single 'Ashes', why it's taken so damn long to get new music out, falling asleep during a gig, and not caring what people think about the new album when it's finally released; sometime this year apparently.Ben may remain tight-lipped about the release date of their new LP, but their new single 'Ashes' is out now on CD, digital, and old-school 7" vinyl.Follow Rainbreakers:FacebookTwitterInstagramYouTubeFollow MNPRhttps://www.mnprmagazine.comFacebookTwitterInstagramYouTubeSupport the show (http://paypal.me/mnprmagazine)

Our podcasts are called The Vietnam War: The Music. Our mission here at the Music Museum is to support all Vietnam Veterans and those who serve the United States, then and now. We thank you for your service. Early-on, in Vietnam, soldiers turned to music as a lifeline to the home front they promised to defend. Rock & roll (R&R) really became rest & relaxation (R&R) for the troops. It was this music that got you through another day, another day closer to going home. While in-country, music was a big part of a soldier’s down time that centered within the hooches of Vietnam. There are events you don’t want to remember, but then there are songs you really want to remember. Many of these songs will have a special meaning for you. A place, a brother, a time gone by. This program is for you, the Vietnam Vets, who will never forget. Our goal with The Vietnam War: The Music is to honor the fallen and the survivors with the music that got them through “just one more day”. **** Our shows are broadcast around the world. They say thank you & “welcome home” to all Vietnam Vets. There is no opinion offered on the War. It’s all about the music. *** Join the conversation on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100008232395712 *** or by email at dannymemorylane@gmail.com **** For your service and your sacrifice, this is The Vietnam War: The Music. Memphis: the birthplace of rock ’n’ roll, soul music capital, and home of the blues, this fabled city has played a major role in American music history. In his new book Memphis Rent Party: The Blues, Rock & Soul in Music’s Hometown, celebrated writer and documentary filmmaker Robert Gordon taps into the lesser-known characters of Memphis who have inspired and influenced popular music, from the 1970s into the present. With interwoven stories and profiles, Memphis Rent Party begins where the greatest hits end. Gordon charts his own musical coming-of-age as he befriends blues legend Furry Lewis, Rolling Stones’ accompanist Jim Dickinson, and the high priest of indie rock, Alex Chilton. He mulls the tragedy of Jeff Buckley’s fatal swim, chronicles the power struggle to profit off singer-songwriter Robert Johnson’s legacy after his mysterious early death, and sips homemade whiskey at revolutionary blues guitarist Junior Kimbrough’s churning house parties. Gordon’s march through the city’s famed recording studios and juke joints captures the spirit of Memphis and illuminates its musical legacy that lives on today. As with the rent parties from which the book takes its name—people gathering to hear live music, dance, and chip in to help a friend in hard times—Memphis Rent Party offers moments of celebration in the face of tragedy, optimism when the wolf is at the door. Gordon finds inspiration in life’s bleakness, art in the shadows of society, and revels in the individualism of these music legends.
Featuring an interview with Rock/Soul group J. Pennelope. Also asking the question "is it ok to have a one night stand?" and more. (original airdate: 5/21/18)

Thomas McClary Founder of The Commodores New Book : Rock and Soul. Info about the book was taking from Amazon.com Riveting, rousing, and outright inspiring, Rock & Soul is an intimate portrait of the legendary Thomas McClary, founder of the world-renowned musical group The Commodores and creator of what many refer to as the signature sound. The Civil Rights Movement provided the ultimate backdrop that thrusted McClary into an early life of activism and historical triumphs as the first black student to integrate Lake County Public Schools in his hometown of Eustis, Florida. Reared with a tremendous work ethic, he arose from the concrete of societal imposed standards with fervor for life, family, and music. The early days of leaving home to attend Tuskegee University to pursue education proved to be pivotal as McClary relentlessly laid the foundation to form a sound and a family of talent that the world had yet to witness. Countless hours with his guitar, and blood, sweat, and tears became synonymous with crafting a sound that intricately fused rhythm and blues, funk and rock, pop and jazz, and moved audiences to undeniable emotion with a language that knew no barriers — music. Signed to Motown, under the tutelage of musical mastermind Berry Gordy, and amidst the pleasures and perils of the entertainment industry, there were no records or rules that could not be broken. In the midst of discovering divine purpose, McClary experienced an atmospheric shift that changed the trajectory of his commitment to community, music, and family, giving him a new perspective on life and the way in which it should be lived. Poetic justice prevails in the fate of the fight for life, love, and the pursuit of happiness.
