This week I'm speaking with Sandy Abrams, a breathwork coach and self taught entrepreneur. Sandy began assessing her relationship with alcohol 10 years ago and we discuss the journey of changing her lifestyle through motherhood, running a massively successful business and of course, the pandemic. We also discuss how to use breath to calm the nervous system and why it's so important to have this in a sober-care routine!A bit more about Sandy:She is a self taught entrepreneur who (much to her surprise) turned a product idea into a multi-million dollar business (launched in 1993), Moisture Jamzz. Without any business background, Sandy had the passion and persistence to roll up her sleeves and learn on the fly. After years of helping people turn their ideas into reality, Sandy published her first book titled, "Your Idea, Inc." (Adams Media 2010) and put her inspirational, motivational advice and anecdotes into this entrepreneurial guide book. Now in “Breathe to Succeed,” Sandy shares her simple yet powerful Breath & Mindfulness tools that fueled her entrepreneurial journey over the past 30 years, making her what she calls a "C.E.'Om," able to juggle the chaos of entrepreneurial life thanks to the power of mindful breath & positive thoughts that lead to action from a strategic mindset. Our brains are preoccupied, our attention spans are short, our energy is often negative, we're addicted to news and social media, and at times we're sleep starved. But thanks to the power of a deep breath, we can overcome all this and achieve success! In this episode, Sandy Abrams discusses the transforming impact of breathing in both our business and personal lives. It can be nothing short of miraculous to take three deep breaths at critical times. You'll become more focused and engaged with Sandy's simple and effective breathing practices. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Reinventing ideas into business Taking a deep breath to connect your mind and body Breathing can transform how you think and feel about yourself Learning how employers can breathe new life into teams, amplifying their companies' cultures and goals [8:54] Reinventing Ideas Into Business The thing about Reinvention is that it will only happen if you become aware of it. Sandy's entrepreneurial journey started when she turned a product idea into something meaningful. Through her book, Idea Inc., Sandy helps people turn their ideas into business. She shares her experiences in business to empower others. [14:32] Take a Deep Breath to Connect Your Mind and Body The first step in taking a deep breath to ease your mind and body is setting your alarm. Take three 10-second deep breaths or 60–90-second deep breaths while in the shower, brushing your teeth, and making coffee in the morning. [17:06] Your Breath Is Transforming How You Think and Feel About Yourself Our breath has the power to impact our nervous systems. When Sandy started her business, she didn't know anything about logistics, textile making, or manufacturing. Through the power of deep breathing, she reframed her thoughts of feeling ignorant and became a confident woman in business. [32:11] Employers Can Breathe New Life Into Teams and Amplify a Company's Culture and Goals Companies should be mindful to prioritize the well-being of their employees by striking a balance between work and personal life. They can do this through cooperative retreats and the like. This will have a positive impact on both the employees and the organization. Breathing can be considered the original medicine. It's historically been a spiritual practice and taking charge of how we breathe carries an almost endless list of health benefits – both mental and physical. First off, James Nestor joins us for a discussion on the amazing ways that breathing, and the way we breathe, can affect our health (both negatively and positively). James is a journalist who has written for the likes of The New York Times, The Atlantic, The San Francisco Chronicle, Outside Magazine, Men's Journal, Scientific American, and more. In 2020, James published his second book, Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art, which sought to provide a historical, scientific, and personal examination of breathing. The book was a smash hit, landing on The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Los Angeles Times' bestseller lists and going on to be translated into over 30 languages. We get into the differences between mouth and nasal breathing, how which nostril you breathe through can impact your body chemistry, and how we're able to take conscious control of our body's usually automatic process for the better. Then we speak to Sandy Abrams, the entrepreneur behind Moisture Jamzz, author, and “CEOm” on a mission to spread knowledge about the power of our breath. Whereas James' approach is more scientific and journalistically minded, Sandy is interested in the way that our breathing can be utilized to create our best energies and mindsets. She currently leads Breathe To Succeed workshops designed to teach us good habits, useful techniques, and all the knowledge we'll need to succeed in turning our breathing around so that it's giving us the most that it possibly can. Thanks to COVID, our breathing and respiratory health is more relevant now than it ever has been. And, as Sandy says, breathing is free, it's organic, it's sustainable, and it's available 24/7. Today, I am delighted to finally be joined by the author of a book that came into my life at the time that I really needed it. Throughout my life, I have used different yoga and meditation practices to help maintain my mindfulness, and these practices all have one thing in common — a dedicated focus on breathing. I've discovered that when I slip in my practice, I have found myself stuck in a pattern of negative thoughts, and this author reminded me of what I was missing out on. I'm joined today by Breathe to Succeed author Sandy Abrams to discuss the power of your breath. She explains how controlling your breath can transform your emotions, increase your self-awareness and your productivity, and help you stay in control of your life, even in this crazy world that we are living in. Sandy also offers one very powerful and extremely simple task that I want you to try right now to start to regain control of your breathing, your thoughts, and your life. Today we discuss — Transforming your emotions with your breath Robert Heller said, “Fear is just excitement without the breath,” but how is that possible? Other emotions can be transformed with your breath as well. Breath is the catalyst that gets you from point A to point B. Your emotions are always your choice, even in these unprecedented times. Taking three deep breaths can help you take control of your emotions. The importance of letting go Exhaling is just as critical inhaling when managing your breath The inhale and the exhale are both important for different reasons. Inhaling through your nose connects to the part of your brain that regulates your emotions. Mindset goals are easier to achieve by managing your breathing. Increase self-awareness to increase productivity Only 10-15% of people today are truly self-aware. Too many of us allow our smartphones to dictate how we are going to feel each day. Clear intentions overcome mindless checking off the to-do list. Mindfulness allows you to take control of your day. You can't afford the luxury of a negative thought in your day — just feel it and let it go. The power of three deep breaths You DO have time to pause and take three deep breaths with your eyes closed. Close your eyes to set a boundary between the internal and the external. Employ the power of three deep breaths before you pick up your phone to check social media. Digital overwhelm is real, but it doesn't always have to be that way. Chronic shallow breathing will leave you in a perpetual state of stress. Don't wait until something goes wrong to try this simple practice. Your breath is always with you When you own your breath, no one can steal your peace. Your breath is the key to your next-level success. You can always find a breath in whatever moment or challenge you are facing. Who you know can make up for what you don’t know in business. That personal touch served Sandy Abrams well when she started her company, Moisture Jamzz, in 1993.Sandy’s idea for moisturizing gloves wasn’t new, but she was convinced she could improve on the existing product. The trouble was, she had no experience in business or the textile industry. Undeterred, Sandy hit Los Angeles’s garment district. Taking the time to cultivate personal relationships helped her find a manufacturer who would fulfill her first tiny order. With samples in hand, Sandy went in person to stores and trade shows to pitch her product. “Bed, Bath and Beyond was our first big account,” she remembers.Sandy still believes that strong relationships are essential for doing business. “The better you know a buyer, the more likely they are to work with you when challenges come up,” she says. Sandy turned her experience of building a business from scratch into her first book, Your Idea, Inc., published in 2010. The book’s success garnered attention from the business world, and invites to speak at conferences. Over the next few years, Sandy witnessed the many benefits new technology like social media brought to businesses. But she also saw her fellow entrepreneurs spending more time working, getting burned out.Sandy had a strategy for dealing with entrepreneurial-induced stress: she’d been “addicted to yoga” since 1989, becoming an instructor in 1995. It helped her relax and be more productive at work. In 2019, Sandy published her second book, Breathe to Succeed, outlining breathing, meditation and yoga techniques to other busy entrepreneurs. “I'm a Type A fast-paced person, yet I can find myself meditating in 30 second snippets throughout the day. If I can do it, you can do this.”Featured Entrepreneur

Personal Branding matters. Whether you're working within a bigger company or organisational structure or out there on your own as an independent business, it's important that those around you know who you are and what you stand for. That is your Personal Brand. Preferably, you want to be able to distill who you really are at your core in just one or two words. Even better if you can create your own Personal Brand Avatar. Sandy Abrams is changing the corporate structure by creating "C.E.OMS" - She is showing just how valuable meditation and taking just 3 deep breaths can improve your daily life and workplace environment. Do you know JUST how powerful your breath is? You've heard it before, "Take a breather"... But it's SO true!!! The power of the breath is remarkable. It can have profound effects on your genetics, your confidence, and your overall mental state - THUS, breeding success!!! It starts with focusing on the air-cycle: Inhalation + Exhalation. Inhalations: Oxygen (O2, the food your cells need to produce energy) is traded for carbon dioxide (CO2, the waste produced by energy production in cells) into and out of the bloodstream. Exhalations: Inside cells, your mitochondria (I faintly remember my cell I constructed from clay in Biology 101 class : ), this is where the production of energy is centered. We use oxygen to burn sugars, fats, and proteins for energy, and CO2 is derived from this process. CO2 is biochemical waste, a chemical substance produced from living organisms, which you don’t. The body naturally scoots it out during this exhalation state. When you tap in to the POWER of your lungs, you tap in to during your DREAMS in to a REALITY. The ideas you have tinkering in the back of your brain? They can become ALIVE - Sandy is here to guide you.
