On the season 4 opener I have Sarah Stevenson. What an inspirational woman she is! Winner of numerous medals in her profession of Taekwondo, Sarah now inspires other athletes to start their journey. I really enjoyed this conversation and was inspired by Sarahs dedication and achievements not just in her professional career but her personal life too.Sarah Diana Stevenson, MBE (born 30 March 1983) is a British taekwondo athlete.A world champion in 2001, Stevenson won her country's first ever Olympic medal in taekwondo, a bronze, at the 2008 Games in Beijing, her third Olympic competition for Great Britain. Controversially eliminated before the medal rounds, she was reinstated following appeal and went on to win the bronze medal final.Stevenson again became world champion in 2011, despite the loss of both her parents to cancer in the preceding year.Stevenson was selected for her home games in London in 2012, where she took the Olympic oath at the opening ceremony on behalf of all the athletes. Her injury-truncated build up to the Games led to an early elimination; she had taken silver at the Olympic qualifiers despite suffering a broken hand.In 2013, Stevenson announced her retirement from competition, and her intention to take up a coaching role in the Great Britain team. While coming from a small town might appear on the surface to be advantageous, in many instances – particularly when it comes to music and choices of musicians – it is actually more of a hinderance. As with everything in life, however, it's what you make of it, as Albany, Western Australia alternate/heavy rock band Liz Dexic recently found out. Faced with the task of finding a new vocalist to front the band, Liz Dexic were forced to refine their sound when it became obvious their search for another female singer to replace the outgoing Sarah Stevenson was an uphill battle.Enter Clay Moir, formerly part of a local cover band, and Liz Dexic were back in business, albeit with a necessity to fine tune their existing material and come up with more to suit a different vocal point. The band recently released the single It's Over, Simulation, with Moir and drummer Simon Blackburn joining HEAVY to chat about recent events."Musically we're still relatively similar to how we were beforehand,” Blackburn offered, “but to a lot of people with the change in vocalists it was almost like a whole new sound. We're really excited and any of our... we've built quite a good following down in Albany and we're now at the point with this new single that we can start... in many ways it's like starting from scratch because we're having to write a lot more new originals because the vocal styles were so different. It's been great so far.""It's interesting going from a female lead singer which the band had before,” Moir added. “She had a haunting tone to add this dark, broody vibe to the music - which I guess it still kind of has - it's just a different thing with me singing now."In the full interview the boys talk more about the new single, the meaning behind the lyrics, the history of the band, changing vocalists and vocal styles and how they made it work, future music and more.

Encouragementology
New Perspective? Simple But Impactful Life Lessons

Encouragementology

Play Episode Listen Later May 18, 2021 40:10

SHOW NOTES: On this show...we are looking for a deeper meaning, a better vantage point, and a new perspective. Are we making it all too complicated? On this hot pursuit for life’s meaning while rejecting meaningful moment after moment that could be our best teacher. Most of us have failed to retain a pearl of wisdom handed to use from time to time. Discounted the advice as quick as the old timer’s tale of a mile to school, uphill, in snow, both ways! But how many simple, yet impactful, life lessons are there?  No way can we cover them all and I won’t even convince you in my relatively short lifespan that I have encountered them all - but with a little help, we will get a good start into understanding how they come about and how to recognize these golden nuggets of revelation. My grandfather once told me, “if you don’t want to be late, leave a little early.” Now, I’m not sure when that took hold and became an important lesson or if from that moment it just took root but I have always been punctual. I’m also not sure if because of that lesson I take pride in my punctuality or if I just obsess over being late, either way, I’m always on time or early.  As of late, those sentiments and words of advice have hit me harder. I think it’s age and a chance to sit back and take stock of where you are and what you’ve learned. At a younger age I was head down, nose to the grindstone, and mowing over any and all truism. It’s that age of independence when you think you know it all and someone sharing their life experience was just that….them sharing.  If you haven’t come full circle to understanding your parents were actually right then brace yourself - it’s coming. Sarah Stevenson gets us started with12 Things Your Parents Were Right About In an article she wrote for healthfully.com ...Sarah gives a great insight into research and statistics that prove these sentiments. Don’t Put All of Your Eggs In One Basket Early To Bed Early To Rise Always Finish What You Started Eat Your Fruits and Vegetables Be Patient Be Thankful for What You Have Wash Your Hands Before You Eat Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff Take a Nap (if You Can) A Stitch in Time Saves Nine Don’t Do the Crime If You Can’t Do the Time Respect Your Elders My mother told me: Find someone to fit your life instead of morphing who you are to fit theirs. Now, I could have overlooked that advice and sloughed it off….oh wait I did do that and come to find out, she was right.    Becoming someone else to appease someone else, has only temporary benefits. You are who you are and so are they and eventually, it’s too difficult to keep up the facade.  As a result, through trials and tribulations of course (the hazards of not paying attention the first time), I have learned to be honest with who I am, celebrate that, and be willing to share and be vulnerable. I don’t have to have everything figured out or even all together - I can be me, quirky, kooky, creative, passionate, encouraging….ME. My father told me: Remember you always have one foot in poverty. His meaning was; don’t get comfortable with where you are because it can all come crashing down unexpectedly. That wasn’t to scare me but help me stay humble and focused. As a result, I’ve learned to live inside or just below my means while striving for more.  Marquita Herald shares Life Lessons We Learn The Hard Way in an article she wrote for emotionallyresilientliving.com We share a collection of great quotes by famous and anonymous people. Here are just a couple… There are things in life we don’t want to happen but have to accept; things we don’t want to know but have to learn, and people we can’t live without, but have to let go. ~Author Unknown One of the most tragic things I know about human nature is that all of us tend to put off living. We are all dreaming of some magical rose garden over the horizon – instead of enjoying the roses that are blooming outside our windows today. ~Dale Carnegie I used to carry a lot of shame and guilt for the choices I’ve made in my life. On the surface, you will always see a smile and for the most part, a positive attitude and an encouraging word but underneath, it was present. I was good at pushing it away, justifying portions of it, and convincing myself that I had grown but the reality was - I was ashamed to face my own failures.  It doesn’t happen in one day or one session of unpacking and taking responsibility. I think like grief, it’s always present to some degree but we can find ways to acknowledge it without being consumed.  I made some dumb choices. Now the t-shirt would read “but that doesn’t define me and I’m stronger for it” blah blah blah. It may be true, but that only helps the situation if you truly believe it. Today, I can say, I would not care so deeply or be so proactive in the work I do if I had not lived and overcome what I did.  Perspective is a powerful thing. It’s your understanding and how you relate to the information you have. We should always be striving for a better, different, or deeper understanding and new perspective.  Sometimes we can get lost in this world. Our ideas, passions, and even our voice can get overshadowed or drowned by what is happening around us, real or not. It feels like whoever has the loudest and most outrageous thing to say or type gets the attention and unless you're comfortable asserting yourself or going against the grain, you settle in for the ride. Becoming increasingly frustrated by this swell of helplessness.  That’s when it’s time to climb up (metaphorically) to a higher vantage point. This way instead of being in the mouse maze you can see it all with a new perspective.  Kristen Lee leaves us with 24 Simple Life Lessons That Are Extremely Important But Too Often Forgotten in an article she wrote for thoughtcatalog.com Here are just a few… Don’t let people invalidate your emotions or hardships, but be sure to maintain a sense of perspective. Manage expectations. Manage expectations. Manage expectations. The grass is green enough where you are. ...and a lesson I’ve learned that has made a huge difference in my life. Encouragement is the key that can help others unlock potential.  Motivation doesn’t happen until you have a goal and a goal can seem impossible until first you are encouraged.    CHALLENGE: visit Mt. Perspective as often as you need a better vantage point. Search your mental library for pearls of wisdom you might have overlooked or been unwilling to accept at the time.  Mix those with life learnings of your own gathered through experience. Then SHARE with others as teachers and students will forever be entwined.  I Know YOU Can Do It!

I'm glad to bring you a NEW EPISODE of Taekwondo Passion. The story of Kashish Malik. A young athlete with high aspirations from India.Gold medal in South Asian Games 2019. Only indian athlete to reach quarter finals in Jakarta Asian Games 2018 three months after being diagnosed with jaundice. She didn't want to learn taekwondo but her sports instructor challenged her.She loved taekwondo so much that she changed her goals of a high position in the Government of India to start pursuing an athletic career. She is fighting outside the ring trying to inspire future indian taekwondo athletes.Fighting internationally she has learned that in competition you can be an opponent with other athletes, but outside it your opponents are also beautiful souls.Kashish is young but determined, an athlete that never gives up.Please enjoy the interview and let us know your thoughts on the comments section. Feeling a superheroThe story of Kashish Malik has a common beginning on successful taekwondo athletes. They were very active kids, not always with the best behaviour. She was a very sporty girl who loved to play cricket with her brothers. When she was 6 year old, playing to be a superhero Kashish Malik jumped over the back of her brother, causing him to fall to the floor and to have a tooth broken. Later she got in trouble at school for defending against a bully. Her sports teacher and also a taekwondo instructor saw her energy and invited her to take taekwondo classes. But the martial art was not attractive for her. As she already stood up against the bully with no need of taekwondo, why would she need it?The teacher challenged her to go to his taekwondo school and sparr with one of his students. As she was new to the martial art naturally she didn't win.But even though it was something new for her she didn't give up.Now she is one of the best athletes of her country. The first to win a gold medal at the South Asian Games and with a strong compromise to inspire future Indian taekwondo athletes. How to help athletes to pursue a career in taekwondo?Taekwondo is a martial art practiced in the whole world. Often we hear that is only the second most practiced sport after football. It is an Olympic sport, but still we do not have a solid professional platform for athletes around the world. As we talked with Erica Stephens the Grand Slam is one of the first attempts and I hope in the future we will have more events like this.Pursuing a taekwondo career is a difficult task for many athletes. Kashish shared with us that she wants to make taekwondo more popular in her country, because although many people practice taekwondo in India, athletes are not encouraged to go for the olympic dream. It is seen as very risky, because if you don't succeed it is considered a waste of time. But it is not the same with other more popular sports, like cricket. This is common around the world. Athletes and their families have to make big efforts to fund competitions and training, we can hear about it in our interviews with Terrence Jennings and Victoria Stambaugh for example.Kashish shared with us that she wants to win an olympic medal to change this. One medal can change everything. As Bradly Sinden shared with us, there was a big difference after Sarah Stevenson's olympic medal for Great Britain. The fighting spirit of Kashish “I never give up”Kashish is a fighter, she proved it at her first taekwondo class and later in her career she had to do it many times. She was selected to the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta. Three months before the competition she got jaundice. The doctor said that she couldn't go to the tournament, her situation was bad and she couldn't even walk sometimes. The doctor's main reason was that she needed to recover and that it was very irresponsible to compete. Kashish had made the decision to go. She didn't want to lose the opportunity to represent her country in such an important tournament. She wanted to give a medal to India. So she decided to compete, supported by her family and her coach. The day after she was discharged from the hospital she went to train and to prepare for the tournament. At the Asian games she was the only indian athlete to reach quarter finals. She lost with 2017 World Champion Lee Ah-reum, a very good result considering she was only 18 year old.More on the interview.Surely, we're going to hear of Kashish career soon, she is pointing high and she doesn't let obstacles stop her.She had another important knee injury before the Manchester 2019 World Championships. She even hid it to her teammates afraid of losing her spot for the competition. That is another story that is better to hear from her voice. Links below, please comment and let us know what did you learn from Kashish interview.

Bradly Sinden “I'm gonna give everything I got to make sure I get to where I want to be”Bradly Sinden is the first Great Britain male World Champion. He made it on the last World Taekwondo Championships in Manchester. Before it, he also won a bronze medal in Muju 2017 World Championships. Bradly is really mature for his young age and an example of determination. Weeks before to win the gold medal in the World Championships, he was so injured that he couldn't even kick. Hearing the interview with him you can learn:What can children learn from other sports that can help them ih taekwondo? Why do you have to focus on your performance and not on the results? What facilities does a world class training center have? How he and his team managed months of injuries before his participation in the Worlds? Why should parents not push a lot of pressure on children growing in the sport? How to fight against taller opponents? His first steps in taekwondo and multisport past.He started doing taekwondo at age 4 in his hometown Doncaster. Along with taekwondo he practiced other sports like football and running. He considers that training other sports improves your overall fitness and learning the basic tactics of other sports can help you as a sparring athlete. His club instructor and Sarah Stevenson's instructor were friends. Sometimes he went to trained to her club when she was already a national team member. When Sarah's Stevenson won the bronze medal at Beijing 2018 Bradly was just a kid. But he thought that Sarah's, a person like him, coming from his same small town, could achieve any dream as she put her mind set on it.Great Britain Taekwondo's success and the importance of patience for young athletes.Sarah's bronze medal at Beijing 2008 was of big help for British taekwondo, because it was their first olympic medal in taekwondo. The funding and support that came after that olympic medal was one of the keys to the later success of GB Taekwondo program. Creating a synergy that was increased later with Jade Jones later Gold Medal in London 2012.When he was 10 and he started in competition and watching the top performers of the sport winning big tournaments like the Olympics made him to decide that taekwondo was what he wanted to do in his future-At the beginning of his career he usually did well in training but sometimes it didn't transfer to performance in competition. He considers patience is very important for every athlete. “The time clock is different for everybody”. So, there is no need to rush.If you work hard your moment will come.International take off and how to learn from every experienceHe won his first international medal as a cadet in the 2012 Belgium Open. In 2015 he won the European Youth Championships. He considers that tournament a breakthrough moment in his career. His coach as a youth was Martin Stamper, a former World Bronze medalist who started his career as a coach with the GB Junior team.In 2016 Martin Stamper started to train the senior team and Bradly had to train a lot and prove that he deserved a place in the GB taekwondo academy. With less than a year in the academy he achieved a bronze medal in the Worlds of Muju but he still was not happy with it. He is a perfectionist so it took a while for him to digest the bronze and realize that it was not a negative experience. He had to learn from the experience and take the positive things. How to learn from events when you don't medal? In events that you don't win a medal you have to look at how you perform. Sometimes you don't win the medal but maybe you fought the best person in that weight class in the first fight, and maybe you had a great fight, and just lost for a few points or certain action. You don't have to focus on that you didn't win the medal. Bradly analyzes his performance in every tournament with his coach, focusing on what he did well and things that he needs to improve.Resilience, teamwork, ability to adapt and the World Championships in ManchesterBradly is usually a mentally strong athlete. In high performance sports, that strength is necessary to overcome difficult moments. One characteristic of high performance sports is that you demand the best from your body and your mind. You will train very close to the edge between top performance and injury. Before 2019 Worlds. Bradly faced months of constant injuries that didn't allow him to train in an ideal way.Starting the year he won the Presidents cup but he got injured in his first fight and could not train for a few weeks. After recovery he came back and was injured again.GB had a big training camp that was an opportunity to train and do test matches with some other top athletes like the french team and Amhad Abugaush. By that time Bradly was injured. He comments that you can't miss those opportunities. So his team decided not to train because he was severely injured but to do the test matches.Another important point is that weeks before the Worlds, he was so injured that he could not even kick. What can you do when you are facing a World Championship competition of taekwondo and you cannot kick?Do you just go home, rest and hope for the best? That's not an option. The solution in Bradly words was to smash conditioning. If you stop training kicks for a small period of time you won't forget how to kick. But you need the confidence of knowing that your body will be prepared for the demands of five or six fights that going for the gold medal implies in a World Championships. His World Championships gold medal proved that the strategy worked.Even he faced really difficult matches. For example, he stopped the winning streak in the World Championships of Lee Dae Hoon, one of the top performers in the history of taekwondo. Please enjoy the interview. You can hear it on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Overcast.

Hello taekwondo lovers.Paige McPherson is an USA national team member. She won the bronze medal at London 2012 Olympics. She is classified to Tokyo 2021 that makes her the very first american female athlete with three appearances in olympic taekwondo.Paige started practicing taekwondo as a child. The way she started was completely focused on the more traditional way.Start in competitionLearning poomsae, breaks, and not only focusing on sparring. In fact, she did not sparr to much. Until her instructor had the idea of taking her to a state championship. She did it quite well. So why not go to nationals? And for being someone that had never trained the sport way, she did it also a great job.Even her instructor was not very involved in the sport side of taekwondo. He saw the potential of Paige. So he started to focus on her training and helping Paige. He contacted Master Juan Moreno, from Peak Performance. And that was the way she moved from her hometown to the city of Miami.Out of the comfort zone.Obviously that wasn't an easy decision. She had the support of her parents who even traveled with her one week in order to see the values and philosophy of Master's Moreno taekwondo program. For them, the performance was not the more important thing but the values. And they found what they were looking for in Peak Performance, which is more like a family. The Olympics. Her first olympics were a whole new experience for her. Having special clothes, meeting other athletes and in her first fight she was against the local star Sarah Stevenson.Obviously all the crowd was against her but she won the fight. After it she could not make it to the final but she had the opportunity to fight for the bronze medal. For many athletes that have the focus on the gold medal is very hard to recover from losing and then to go and focus on the bronze. The taekwondo bronze medal in the olympics is a very hard mental challenge. You've lost the gold, you're probably thinking more in going home.Paige managed that and refocused on getting the bronze. The Rio Olympics were not what she expected. But the interesting part is that she considers that difficult moment helped her to improve in the next years.Achieving her best result in World Championships the next year in Muju. Where she get the silver medal.Focus on the tatami not on the surroundingsIn the interview we talked about Paige's career and she gave some advice for young athletes. When she was young she had a crush on a certain guy and in a fight she noticed this guy was watching her fight. So she started to do flashy things that she did not normally do in her fights and that make her lose. She learned to focus on her and not on the crowd.Paige is a person of faith, focusing on being not just a great athlete but also a great human being.Enjoy the interview!

Today I'm so excited to be chatting all things health and hustle with YouTube's Holistic Health Princess and new Mumma, Sarah's Day.With over 1 million dedicated YouTube subscribers and what I'd say to be the highest engaged Instagram following in our country, it is no wonder everyone wants to know the healthy habits, self-love routines and daily ins and outs of Sarah's Day.A channel that was originally created to share her personal struggles with acne, Sarah Stevenson has not only built one of the biggest online communities that allows her to be one of the most influential social media influencers but also a thriving business that sees her regular launching her own products alongside some of her most trusted brands.I have been lucky enough to know Sarah for quite some time now so it was my absolute pleasure to visit her and Kurt and their new little bubba, Fox who you all know is just divine, in their Sydney home. It’s episode 9! Bloody hell, doesn’t time fly? This week we have a little chat on the announcement of Ali Oetjen as Australia’s newest Bachelorette and our… mixed feelings about it.Also, the problematic wellness influencer who says she treated her precancerous cells naturally, and the glittery phenomenon that is dubbed “the party of the year”, the MET gala.UPDATE: After recording this episode we also received a statement from Dr Brad McKay, a family doctor from East Sydney Doctors, about Sarah Stevenson's claims. He told us:"Promoting a healthy lifestyle is admirable, but believing you’ve healed your cervical dysplasia “naturally” is not grounded in reality... "Your immune system is extremely complex and you really don’t have much control over it. It’s narcissistic to believe that you can heal your cervix with positive thoughts and green smoothies... Declaring that you’ve healed your cervix “naturally” is not only ignorant, but it’s also insulting to those people who have been diagnosed with cervical dysplasia or cervical cancer. It implies that if you require treatment you haven’t prayed hard enough, haven’t thought positively enough, or haven’t eaten the right nutritional supplement. Sometimes bad things happen and it’s not helpful or accurate to play a blame game... "I’m glad to hear that her high grade cervical lesion is now a low grade lesion, but it’s dangerous to recommend others follow a “CIN3 routine” based on her anecdotal experience."As always, you're so welcome to join the conversation in our Facebook group! Adoption advocate, mom and blogger Sarah Stevenson joins us this week to talk about a calling to adoption, her experience bringing her son home from China and the best way to support families who are adopting.  Terrible Opinions Sarah: Even though I live in Texas, I can’t deal with modern country music. Jordan: Kathy Griffin should not have lost jobs over the shocking Trump photo. Matthias: I enjoy going to crawfish boils because it’s a fun ritual, but I don’t think I actually like crawfish. Sometimes you just know Sarah shares the amazing story of how she and her husband felt called to be adoptive parents and went to China to meet orphans in need of a home. One 6-year-old boy claimed her during their time there, and the rest was history. “By the end of the week, I knew this was my kid,” Sarah remembers. Sarah discusses the importance of community and the people in her life who helped her through the adoption process. She also talks about the best ways to discuss adoption with families and brings a Christian perspective to the question of whether or not to adopt. Yes, religion is about exclusion – all religions We talk about Sen. Bernie Sanders’ attack on Trump administration nominee Russell Vought. Sanders took a quote from an article Vought wrote in January 2016 out of context and attempted to cast the nominee deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget as a bigot. We clarify the quote from Vought’s article and look at some ways that liberals are trying to edge Christians out of public life. Find Sarah at her blog: Love Hope & Adopt
