Join Yvette Hampton for the second part of her conversation with Heather Haupt, homeschool mom to five blessings, author, speaker, and former homeschooled student. No question about it, it’s a Brave New World out there. The world is changing at a breakneck speed. And, what’s a parent to do? Do you feel like you’re living in a dystopian novel right now? What in the world is going on in the culture, pre-2020 and especially now? And, what can we be doing as parents to prepare our children for whatever the future holds? Join us for this encouraging discussion on how we can resist the urge to panic, parent intentionally, set a firm foundation for our kids, and prepare our family to stand strong in a world that seems to be fighting against all things true and good. Heather Haupt is an author and speaker who was homeschooled and is now homeschooling her five children. Recognizing the brevity of childhood and the power of a parent’s influence, Heather both inspires and equips families toward intentional parenting, pursuing God, and delighting in the adventure of learning. She is the author of the books Knights in Training: Ten Principles for Raising Honorable, Courageous and Compassionate Boys, The Ultimate Guide to Brain Breaks, and co-author of GO GLOBAL: A Literature-Heavy, Movement-Rich Learning Adventure. She writes at CultivatedLearning.org and HeatherHaupt.com. Scripture Mentioned: “But I beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence, wherewith I think to be bold against some, which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh. For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.” 2 Corinthians 10:2-6 KJV Psalm 1 “Blessed is the manwho walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away.” Recommended Resources: Knights in Training: Ten Principles for Raising Honorable, Courageous, and Compassionate Boys CultivatedLearning.org HeatherHaupt.com. "Cease endlessly striving for what you want to do and learn to love what must be done." | Goethe Yvette Hampton talks with Lara Molettiere, homeschool mom, author, blogger, and speaker about how to make your home a sacred space to cultivate strong roots and build relationships with your family. This is a beautiful part of mother culture and we, as women, are blessed with the ability to be grace-makers and gatekeepers in a world that puts too much, too soon on our loved ones. In our culture of busyness, making the choice to bravely go against the constant pull of the seemingly urgent things and choose instead the slower, intentional life that focuses only on the important is valiant.   PARTNER WITH US! She has been a speaker in over thirty states and seven countries.  She has been married to her husband, Davis, since 1986. They have seven kids with whom they love to laugh. Together, their life has been a roller-coaster ride, with God at the controls. Rachael enjoys playing in the dirt, eating dark chocolate, and walking on the beach. She and Davis are the owners of Apologia Educational Ministries. www.RachaelCarman.com Scripture References: Galatians 5:22-23 – The Fruit of the Spirit Proverbs 31:10 “A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.”   Practical tips for building Christ-like character: Pray that God will show you what needs your attention not only in your children, but also in yourself. Pray that God will be glorified and that you and your children will grow more into the image of His Son Jesus. Pray that He will grant you opportunities to weave in C3 through each day, to give you eyes to see. Assess character quality strengths and weaknesses for yourself and your children; don’t forget that the enemy is never satisfied with our weaknesses; he also wants to steal our strengths for his purposes. Be honest, but not brutal. Look for character strengths and acknowledge weaknesses. Don’t overwhelm yourself or your kids with too much to work on. This is a journey. Begin-this is the hardest part, just starting. So, begin slowly always using Scripture and prayer as a guide; this is a process, not an insta-fix. It will take time. Know that this is the training that God blesses because it is heart training. There will be times when you falter. Those are times when you need to simply begin again, anew.  Dig your heels in, dare to be intentional, dare to deal with the most important issues of the heart by engaging in the battle. Dare to practice prayerful perseverance. Dare to work on your own heart as you seek to train your child’s heart. Dare trust God’s way as you focus on foundational issues of the heart. Define the weekly focus character quality and discuss it. Sometimes it’s also helpful to define and discuss its opposite. Look at what God’s word says about the CQ and look for it in the life of the Bible character. Set the bar when it comes to Christ’s example and Bible teaching. Then hold the line when it comes to behavior training with consistency and patience. We were blessed to have Rachael Carman as a speaker for the 2020 Homegrown Generation Family Expo. If you missed part one, please go back and listen to the previous episode. Caleb was one of our excellent speakers for the Homegrown Generation Family Expo. Check it out at HomegrownGeneration.com now, enjoy the rest of my conversation with Caleb. I wanted, I want to talk a little bit deeper about what's actually happened happening in the, in the culture of the public school system. Yvette Hampton (01:07): you know, I hear we're, we're from California. I'm just like you, which is how we know you. and so, we're, we're removed from it a little bit right now, but we still hear of all the craziness that's happening. And I know it's not just in California that these things are going on. you're on the inside. We often hear it. It almost feels like hearsay. And sometimes to be quite honest with you, I hear about things that are happening in public schools and I think that can't be true. Like that can't actually be happening. Maybe it's happening at one or two schools, but it certainly can't be happening all over the country. And several months ago, I had an old friend from high school, she, she called me and she was considering taking her kids out of public school and she's in Northern California actually. Yvette Hampton (01:56): And so she just said, yeah, just talk to me about this homeschool thing. You know, cause I feel like I need to take them out, but I, I don't understand homeschooling and I just don't know. And she, she really didn't know a whole lot of what was happening in her own kid's school, even though she was involved. And so I started doing some research and there were some things that I just found that just appalled me in a million different ways. you know, one of the things I saw was, the state of California of course, you know, you can take a girl at any age to have an abortion and you not only do, you not have to tell her parents, but you're not allowed to tell her parents. You could take a little girl to murder her baby and you're not allowed to tell her parents or you know, kids can come in and they can say, you know, a little boy can come and see him. Yvette Hampton (02:45): I think I'm going to be a girl today. And they have to honor that. And they can't tell his parents. And they've completely removed parental authority from everything that they're doing with these kids. And they have become the authority and hear these things. And I read them and I know that they're true. And then I think, but certainly that can't be. Yeah. So how, what is the culture looking like as a, as a public school teacher, what are you faced with day in and day out? And then how have you seen that change over the years? Cause you've been teaching in the public school system for quite some time. I mean, yeah. So for a long time. So you've seen, I'm imagining quite a shift from when you first started teaching to what is happening now. So, so talk to us about it. What's going on? Caleb Schroeder (03:34): So, I really don't think I would've survived as long as I have. if I was in, like LA unified school district, I am in Kern County and Kern County is the wild West of California. That's how we like to describe it. So, in the community that I teach in, our biggest claim to fame is we have the Willow Springs race track, which is one of the original, paved serpentine race tracks, or I don't, I don't know exactly what it is, but it's popular. So that employs a lot of people in our community. I don't know if you know NASCAR folk, but they're usually pretty conservative. the next big employer in our community is the air force base. and usually air force personnel are more conservative. So all those laws have gone into effect. So, you know, if a boy decides he's a girl, he needs to be allowed to use the girls restroom locker room. Caleb Schroeder (04:29): That's the law that we have to observe. and we have had a couple kids in our, in our school who have decided they want to play that game. and so, it's sort of up to the school for how they're going to, how they're going to deal with it. because I'm in a conservative community, they've, they've dealt with it very cautiously. so we have all of our restrooms locked in. We let one kid in the restroom at a time on, there has to be a security guard at every restroom. and that's a problem, you know, but that's, that's how we deal with it, you know. they have to, in the health classes, the thing having to teach the children, they're required to teach the children. About all of the different genders now and all the different ways that those genders can have sex. Caleb Schroeder (05:17): The sex ed piece of, of health has gotten very, very crazy. I mentioned that my daughter is in my public school. and so she's, she's independent study, but she still has to do, you know, the state approved curriculum. And so, this last semester her teacher came to me and she was like, Hey, I can do the health course, the full health course or I could do the health course without the sex ed piece. You can elect to not have sex ed for her health. And I was like, yes, please. You know, and so like in a conservative community, the way we interpret it, we can sort of say, Oh, we didn't get to that. I'm sorry we didn't get to that part of the curriculum. I'm sorry. You what I'm saying? And so there's, there's ways around it. My dad taught for 37 years. Caleb Schroeder (06:01): He taught intelligent design in the public high school. his students actually would actually sort of get confused sometimes they'd be like, wait a second, Mr. Schroeder, are you, are you saying that you believe intelligent design or are you saying that you believe in evolution? Cause he wouldn't tell him what he believed in, but he would present both sides of the argument and then the kids would sometimes they'd be like, wait, what side are you arguing for? We don't understand. So eventually one of his students made him two hats and one of 'em says intelligent design. And one of 'em says evolution. So he'd put the hats on when he was arguing from the different views. So the kids would sort of like be able to keep track of what's going on. So my conservative community, we've sort of been protected from that. But what you'll notice, I'm in California right now. Caleb Schroeder (06:44): Over 10% of students have left the traditional public school. and they're going to charter schools that don't have to stick to the same crazy curriculum rules that some of the public schools have to stick to. they can have a little more freedom for how they do things. They're going to private schools on their homeschooling. there's a lot of charter homeschools in California now. Our kids are being taught independent, subtle study through charter schools and they have a lot of freedom. So, there's, there's a math mass Exodus, so every year they're losing thousands of students from the public-school system because parents in California are fed up with it. What's interesting is during the Obama era, I don't know, a lot of conservative people realize this. Obama actually was a big proponent of charter schools, but like these public schools are failing our kids. Caleb Schroeder (07:36): They need a little bit of competition, a little bit of competition, never heard anybody, which isn't usually what you hear from a liberal. Right. and so, he started, sort of supporting those systems and it was sort of one of the first times that in California, our union didn't have a lot of support from the Democrats. Well, now it's shifted. and so, I don't know if you follow, follow the recent teacher's strike in LA. A lot of that had to do with the massive amount of students that they've lost to charter schools. The public schools are losing funding and the decision they made after that strike was a huge sort of, below two. With the charter schools, the homeschool parents, they're going to start making it harder for parents in California to homeschool. There's been well, uh, how, how they're doing it is through our, uh, through our social care program. Caleb Schroeder (08:31): So, they're trying to get legislation passed that if you, have an affidavit. So we tell a friend, you have to file an affidavit if you're homeschooling your children and they're trying to get legislation passed where if you file an affidavit, then you have to be visited by a social worker. In California, social workers have absolute power. So if a social worker comes in and decides you're a bad parent, they can tell any lie they wanted the judge, you had no recompense whatsoever. You can't do anything to get your kids back. One of my, one of my good friends is going through this right now, her son away, they're about to take her other two kids away. They're accusing her of abuse. and there was no abuse at all. and so, and it's just her word against a social worker and a social worker doesn't like her and it's like, it's not normal core situation at all over a period. Caleb Schroeder (09:23): So like she can't even like call other moms who've been in these situations and are like this lady's line. She can't even call them to type testify. so, it's getting scary here in California. but what I tell people, the safest place to be is where your shepherd tells you to be. And so right now I know this, this is where I'm supposed to be. I'm supposed to be on the front lines of this. I'm not going to put my kids in the public school. And, and there's ways for me to get around. those bills going through so far, they haven't gone through, but we, this last election, our state got a lot more liberal and they're getting away with a lot of things. but we can't make decisions based on fear. And so, uh, there's there, there's a battle brewing. our enemy recognizes that what we're doing is preventing him from having the minds of our child children and he hates it and he's coming after us and he has a lot of people who are doing, doing his bidding. so that he has a strong foothold in California and it is, uh, it is scary. but I know, I know whom I have believed in. So that's, that's why I have hope. Yvette Hampton (10:41): So what can parents do? What can Christian homeschool parents, and Christian public-school parents do to fight this culture war that's going on? Caleb Schroeder (11:36): in addition to praying? Of course. Yeah. I would say to, to keep yourself educated, you know, pay, pay your dues with HSL da and like be following them. Be paying attention to the cases that going on in California. and, and be, be praying specifically by name for the different situations involved in the homeschool community. You know, whatever it is, whether it's costal conversations or another one, find a homeschool community so that you're aware when these things are going on. So you can be providing support to the people that surround you. the, uh, and we w what I think, what I'm confident of, I'm a public-school teacher. It's not going to be hard at all for homeschool students to outperform public school students. We do a good job of educating your children and guess who's tomorrow's leaders are going to be. Caleb Schroeder (12:38): Yeah, they're going to be our children. And they'll, the liberals are aborting themselves out of existence. And unfortunately, I mean, that's sort of a, maybe a crass way of saying it, but, they're, they, they're not interested in having families and homeschool parents as a rule have really large families. I know several, I have six kids and I know several families. I have more kids than I do. And so as, as we stick to our guns, as we hold onto our children and we educate them and we don't just educate them out of fear, but we recognize that Jesus says, I'm going to build my church and the Gates of hell won't stand against it. And we need to have that attitude in, in this battle for the hearts of our children and for the hearts in our communities. And so, what that means is, we don't, we don't try to homeschool in a bubble. Caleb Schroeder (13:28): We homeschool with our why and our doors wide open. And what happens when, when your unsaved neighbors are coming in and they see your kids, they're blown away. They're like, what? This is amazing. What you're doing here is amazing. You know, they see there, they see that they're learning Latin and they see they're reading the classics and they hear them studying with each other and they hear them talking about the books they're reading. They're just like, what? Like my kids, I can't even get them to read a graphic novel, you know? and you know, so, so when, when homeschoolers actually live transparently in their communities, what's going to happen? Where it's going to get out is what if somebody reports me or what if somebody, you know, tells people what I'm doing, what you're doing is good. What you're doing is awesome. And so shine that light, shine light to the people around you. Be inviting people over for meals in your home, have barbecues, do block parties, invite people over and do an amazing job discipling your children and [inaudible] we'll win a generation. Yvette Hampton (14:34): Yeah, that's right. And the best way to disciple them is to teach them the word of God. And Ephesians six when they lay down, when they walk, when they stand, when they, you know, throughout the day, always looking for opportunities. You talked about that with your dad and how he would just take you out and he'd just, by his very nature, he introduced you to the nature of God and the creation of our, of, of our Lord. And there are so many opportunities that we have to point our kids to Christ. And when we take advantage of that day in and day out, and when, when we are not sending them off into a system that's teaching them everything that's contrary to the word of God, we have the ability to teach them. And you know, it doesn't mean that they have to know Latin. It's okay if your kids don't know Latin. Yvette Hampton (15:21): It's okay if your kids don't reach calculus. It's okay if they're not historians or scientists or whatever, you know, they are going to be who God created them to be. And that's the beauty of homeschooling is we get to, we get to cater to our kids' learning style, to their desires, to how God has created them individually. And they will make a difference in this world. And I love your stance on be hospitable, open up your home to people and they don't have to be just homeschool people. Invite the neighborhood kids over. We had a house that we did that with, several years ago and we, we had a nice backyard and we had one of those big Costco play sets. And so we would invite all of the neighborhood kids to come over to our house. And it was so much fun. And I remember one summer we took, it was like 12 neighborhood kids to VBS at our church that year and they were so excited. Yvette Hampton (16:14): And then we moved to another neighborhood and we did the same with those kids and we brought those kids to church with us and they're still going. As matter of fact, when we went back to California, well guess it's about a year and a half ago now. we, we went back to our home church and the neighborhood kids who would go every week when we were there, they were still going. And it was so exciting. And these are kids who come from a very broken home, but grandma would take them and she was there and we were so excited to see them there. And we thought, this is it. You know, this is the purpose of coming alongside of our neighbors and love your neighbor as yourself. And what a great opportunity we have to be able to do that as homeschool families. Caleb Schroeder (16:54): Let me tell you about one like that that reminded me of just this amazing opportunity we have and California right now. So because our state is liberal, they require schools to allow any club to have a presence on campus. so that includes child evangelism fellowship in our community in California right now, we can't keep up with the requests from local principals for us to have a good news club on their campus. where if we, we just need more people who will help staff those and the primary people who are staffing. Those are until families, you know, they're the teenagers from some of these homeschool families that the good news club is usually at the end of the school day. So it's like two 30. So a lot of working professionals can do that. But the homeschool moms and their kids, they can go do that. Caleb Schroeder (17:42): So, I don't know if any of your listeners are familiar with their local CEF, but CF loves homeschool families and you get to bring your kids on the public-school campus and be salt and light right there with you and what you're doing. You're sharing missionary stories, you're sharing Bible stories. I don't know if you're familiar with CF, but it's, it's one of the largest missions of organizations in the world. And that's, that's really how, how missions is done in America. It's true. We call it backdoor evangelism, the children. And then through the children you reach the parents and, and there's, there's, the harvest is right there is the workers are few. And so there's so many opportunities in California to be on those campuses and to be doing, to be doing outreach. You don't have to send your kids to public school to send your kids to public school. You have a presence right there and do amazing things with your children in your, in your local community through CES starting. Encourage your listeners to look up their local CF chapter and try to help them Yvette Hampton (18:47): or too young life. Cause I'm familiar with young life. Yeah. Caleb Schroeder (18:50): Young life is usually sort of like junior high, high school age. And then there's also my, my high school actually has a campus life program, which is another one. But CF is for elementary school age kids junior high. But yeah, it's, it's sort of the first one that was ever started. It's been around for a long, long time. Have you ever seen like the wordless book? That's a CF thing. Yvette Hampton (19:12): Okay. Yes. Okay. Okay. Yeah, I'll, I'll link back to those in the show notes. I just did an interview recently with Elizabeth Johnston, the activist mommy, I don't know if you're familiar with her, but we were talking about the impact that we can have on, abortion clinics, and, and pro-life centers. And you know, as homeschoolers, we have such a great advantage because we have, we have time and I know that there are homeschool moms who are rolling their eyes at me going, I don't have time. I don't have extra time to do anything because I've got my kids with me all day. Yeah. There's time for ministry when God calls you to it, you know, pray and ask God, what are you calling our family to pray with your kids, get on your knees, pray and ask God to show you and your kids what ministry you can be involved in. Yvette Hampton (19:57): And he will give you the time to be involved in those ministries because he does that. He, he, he wants us to serve in his world. And I think as Christians, so often we get into our little bubble of church and homeschooling and, and we forget that there's another world out there who desperately needs to hear about Christ. And you know, I've really, I've been thinking a whole lot lately about, just those who are in, in leadership in our country, who are making all these horrific decisions and taking the lives of innocent children and, and telling lies to these kids who are so confused about, you know, their gender identity and this and that. And, and it starts with our, it starts with our leadership there. The, we need to be praying for those people. And, you know, I mean, obviously my heartbreaks in a million different pieces for those babies who are being, whose lives are being torn out of their mommy's wombs. Yvette Hampton (20:56): I just, I, I can't even wrap my mind around it and how we as a nation are saying that this is okay. but I, I just again read, uh, one of my favorite books is the hiding place by Corrie 10 boom. for those of you who have not read it, I please read it. I, I think, I mean, you know, if I was stranded on a desert Island and I could only take three books with me, it would be the Bible, the hiding place, and the little house on the Prairie series that counts as one book to me. but I love the hiding place. And one of the things I love about that book is that, Betsy, who's Corrie 10 boom's sister and their father, Casper 10, boom, they are so passionate about praying for those who are torturing and executing, you know, all of the innocent people and their hearts break for them. Yvette Hampton (21:44): And, and they're, you know, a couple of circumstances where, you know, Betsy will just say, Oh, I feel so sorry for them when someone's being tortured. And Cory saying, you know, she's thinking, she's talking about the person that being tortured and she's not talking about that person though she feels sorry for them too. She's talking about the person torturing because they need Jesus. And if we're going to say that we care about human life, care about those people who are literally heading straight to hell and, and they need Jesus, they need him desperately. And so, you know, as homeschool families, we need to just be praying and asking the Lord, where would you have us to serve? Where would you have us to spread your truth and spread your gospel to every end of the earth? We don't have to go to Uganda to be on the mission field. Yvette Hampton (22:34): I love that you talk about, you know, you felt like God called you to missions that you are on the mission field. Caleb, you are on the front lines. You are witnessing to these kids, witnessing to teachers. You are showing by your very life that you have Jesus. And so, and I know you're making a difference. I've known people, you talked about Christian earlier. you know, I know people who you've had a great impact in their lives because you have taken a stand for what truth is and use the platform that God has given you to be able to do that. So, um, Caleb Schroeder (23:04): I think one of the, one of the big ways that we can reach out and make a difference, especially with the abortion issue, is finding ways to support single moms. Just, just finding the local networks to be going there and doing classes for them. Do everything you can to give them support and to not make them feel like there's nobody there for them. That's really where that bottom battle's going to be. One, the way that we wage war in our culture is by loving the center. That's what I saw Jesus doing. And that's how he changed the communities that he was preaching the gospel amendments to us by loving the centers. And so we go and we love, we love those centers. Well, we pray for those people who are making the decisions. We go on the marches, you know, as a kid, I was out there with my sign, you know, at our local hospital when they're trying to have an abortion here and we got 'em out of here, you know. Caleb Schroeder (24:04): and so, like you do those things, and you're teaching your children as you do that. And you're raising up a new generation of people who are going to be engaged in the culture. Right. And it's important to distinguish between being engaged in the culture and being at war with the culture. We're at war with sin. We hate sin, but we love the people. And that's really where, that's where the 10 booms got it. Right. They were praying with people, they hated their sin, but they, but they loved those people. Well, and even just praying to God to give you that love and said, the Holy spirit is shed abroad his love in our hearts. And so we have that love for those people. And when we act out of that, when we pray out of that, that's what's going to change this world. And that's what's going to teach our children. Wow. Yvette Hampton (24:48): Yeah. And, and it's, it's when we realize what we've been saved from and we're still sinful to, you know, we're just as sinful as the next person. but we, I was just talking about this with my girls the other day saying there's a difference between being a sinner and living in sin. And we are all sinners desperately in need of a savior. and once we realized what we've been saved from, we will, we will have such an earnestness to go out and share that with other people. You know, when you eat a dessert that is so unbelievably delicious and you bring your friends all around you, you want to say, Oh, you've got to try this dessert. It's so good. It's the best chocolate cake I've ever had. Or, or you know, whatever cheesecake, you know, you, you're excited and eager to share that with them. Yvette Hampton (25:40): And we need to be that way with the gospel. We need to, to just cry out to the Lord, to give us the boldness to share Christ with those who, who desperately need him because we are sinful too. Jesus died for us. He died for them. I love that you talk about single moms and reaching out to them. We actually interviewed Mary Jo Tate for the movie and she was a single mom and, and we asked her, you know, what is the one thing that, that single moms need? And she said they need other people to come alongside of them and help them. And if that means coming alongside of a single mom and saying, I know that you're not comfortable having your child in public school, but I know you have to work to provide for your children. Let me take some of the burden off of you and let me homeschool them. Yvette Hampton (26:24): There's no better way to love. I mean, that is amazing. And I know of parents who are doing that. we stayed with it, really neat family in Tennessee, and, and Franklin and they have a farm and they just have a really good friend, a really good family friend who is a single mom, just a really neat lady. and this has just kind of taken this mom and her son under their wing and they're part of their family now and she helps to homeschool their son and, and you know, we get so comfortable in her little like, okay, it's going to, it's going to disrupt our homeschool day. If we bring on another child. It's okay. It's okay to disrupt your homeschool date just a little bit if that's what God's calling you to do. and so yeah, step out, do something John says, get off the bench. Caleb Schroeder (27:13): You know, my wife and she's, she's pretty awesome, but what are things she's taught me is, just go with it. You know, like a lot of times we're so overwhelmed at the uncertainty of tomorrow we'll love what if I start having people in my home or whatever. I started going doing these ministries. Really it's messy, you know, but be build, be willing to have maybe a little more of a messy lifestyle, you know? like Rosaria Butterfield, I really highly recommend her book, but she just talks about these single moms from her neighborhood or just coming over to her house in the evening and all the laundry is on the table. So what do they do? They start, well, no, she says they just put it back in the dryer for her to do right. Or you know, they help her with the dishes or they help her get dinner on the table. Caleb Schroeder (27:53): And so they're just doing life together. If you've ever read any of Edith shepherd shapers writings, that's the way she would do her. And Francis Shaffer just they did life together. And so that's, that's how Christians are going to win this generation. One of the things I find about millennials, they love and they're desperate for community. They want connection there. They're one of the least connected generations because of social media and because of all these issues, but they're desperate for that and like having them into your home, it goes so far to communicate the lower price. Let me just give a little bit of encouragement to your listeners. I personally am a very task oriented person. I'm sort of a go getter and I always have things that I'm doing and things that I'm pursuing, and God's really taught me to slow down and be present with my children. Caleb Schroeder (28:45): I think that's extremely important, especially for homeschool dads. And moms are there all day. They're going to be with their kids. one of the, one of the little things I did that it might seem, it might seem minuscule, but it's made a huge difference for me. I put an overstuffed chair in my son's bedroom and so when I go in to pray with them at night, I sit in the chair. That makes just a huge difference for me because I'm instead of like, okay, the task is pray and then, and then leave. I sit down and I just, I can sort of relax while I just listened to them and I just give them my year and I give them my face and I let them tell me about their day and I'll ask, let them ask me the million questions. At nine year old boys have, you know, anything from science to the Avengers, you know, they wanted to come before bedtime. Exactly. The bedtime turns them into, you know, philosophers. Caleb Schroeder (29:37): But just to be present with my, with my daughters, I pursue their hearts. I take them out on dates for, Sophie just had her 14th birthday and I took her to this local place, the Odyssey. I don't know if you've been at Odyssey, it's beautiful down in Granada Hills. And then we went to the Pantages and we saw Wicked on the, on the stage, you know, off-Broadway and it's just, it was a special time for me to let her know I love you and I'm sure to protect your heart, you know, as you, as you go on into the culture and just taking that time to slow down, to be present with your family. We love reading. we are constantly reading for the month of January we went completely off screens and we just read, and it was such a blessing. I would come home and all my kids would be like sprawled out on the couch, all reading different books. Caleb Schroeder (30:24): the weaker readers, we use audible and they're listening and, and that's just, those are treasured times to just grow together. So just I challenge your listeners, you know, be, be active in the culture, but understand that's something you do as a family and you can present with your children while you're doing that. I love what you guys are doing. Just taking your girls along with you. You know, this is our adventure. This is our family and venture. We're doing it together. That's how God designed the family to work, is to increase our ministry, not decreasing. Yvette Hampton (30:51): That's right. And it's not always easy and it's not always fun. but it is always a blessing to be where God has called you to be and to be doing what he's called you to be doing. He brings blessings and obedience, so for sure. I love that. Well, thank you Caleb. You are a huge, huge blessing to us. thank you for what you're doing in the public-school system. Thank you for being on those front lines and making a difference in the lives of these kids who desperately need to hear truth and love for sharing that. So anyway, have an awesome rest of your day. Thanks for your time. I had mentioned this at the beginning of the podcast, but we have a great interview with Caleb that we did for the movie and there's a pretty good portion of it on, I think it's on the Backstage Pass membership site, but you can actually see it for free. so we will put a link to that in the show notes. You can click on that if you haven't seen it yet. So, so thank you guys. Have a great rest of your day and we will see you next week.

Interview transcript (this is an automated transcript. Spelling and grammar errors are guaranteed!) Speaker 1 (00:42): Hey everyone. Welcome back to part two of my interview with Jennifer Elia. On the last episode we talked about eliminating homeschool overwhelm that every homeschool mom faces and we also talked about just the importance of finding support both globally and locally in your homeschool. And so today Jennifer is back with us again. Welcome back to the podcast, Jennifer. Speaker 2 (01:06): Thank you. Glad to be back. Speaker 1 (01:07): Yeah, I'm so glad to have you back. She is the founder of Sound Foundations Homeschool. She's a homeschool mom to four kiddos and she has been a public school teacher and a college professor. She's gotten lots and lots of training under her belt today. She speaks from experience and also from just education herself and knowledge of having been a teacher. And so one of the things we kind of started talking about at the end of our last episode was we were talking about nurturing a love of learning and our kids, and I have found that too, the one of the most important things that we do as homeschool parents and also one of the hardest things that we do as parents because we can, we, we talked in the last episode about, about the gaps that we all feel like our kids have when we kind of get this frantic, Oh my goodness, our kids are going to have all these holes in their education and what are we going to do? Speaker 1 (01:58): And you were talking about how it's important to teach them how to love learning because everybody's going to have gaps in their education. But if they, if they learn how to learn, then they can learn anything. And I've told this story actually before. I've told this story before on the podcast, but I grew up really hating school. I genuinely hated school. And I remember my senior year of high school I just felt like, Oh, thank the Lord, it's done. It's over. I never have to open up another book again. I enjoyed reading for fun, but I did not ever want to open up anything academic ever again in my whole life. And I just felt like, okay, I've checked off that box. I never have to learn anything again as long as I live. And I really wish, now I have a very different opinion about that and view of learning of course. And now I enjoy learning as an adult, but I wish that I had grown up with a desire to learn and a love for things because everything that we learn can, can and should point us towards our creator and having a deeper relationship with him. So I want to talk about the two things of, you know, one nurture, why we need to nurture that love of learning in our kids. And then two, how do we accomplish doing that? Speaker 2 (03:19): Yes. Well, the first thing is that like I said in the last one, I love to do research. Like that is a great passion of mine. I love, I actually love writing research papers. But now that I'm out, most of what I do my research on is education or something like that. However, I was working for global learning day for a while. And one of the things that they wanted me to find out about was preparing people to be lifelong learners, but also preparing them for getting out into the world and being productive adults. And so I really dove into that research and when I found is that when led top skills that employers want are people who can learn, like know how to learn and are, are willing to self-educate so they're willing to keep learning and they know how to take a topic and find out about it. Speaker 2 (04:18): And I realized that homeschooling really sets us up for that because if you're in a brick and mortar school you are, yes, you're checking off those boxes and you're trying to get from first grade to second and second to third and pass this test and earn that certificate. And then in the end it's considered like a completion, like you're done. But really when you think about graduation, it's called a commencement because it's supposed to be beginning the next chapter. And so it should never really end. So I think that when we're thinking about preparing our kids for wanting them into a world and preparing them for like, you know, future ready careers, one of the biggest things that we can teach them beyond STEM or investing in expensive chemistry equipment or any of that is really how to learn because of the world that they're going to be living in is going to be completely different than what we're doing right now. Speaker 2 (05:09): And that's one thing that I've seen over and over again in these studies about STEM is that the people that are high up in the technology are saying, listen, the coding you're teaching your kindergartners is not going to exist when they get out. So instead of focusing on that, focus on teaching them how to adapt and learn and love that and also be creative in their learning. So you were saying like, how do we start that? And I think really it's igniting that, that spark. When kids are really little, they, they get fascinated by something. So everyone has their little quirk that they love. Like we were talking earlier about my oldest just loved Thomas the tank and she couldn't, I mean, every single engine that there was and telling you what they did and, and where they lived and what their number was and whatever. Speaker 2 (06:01): And so they didn't study a few years ago about children like young children preschool and toddlers and how they obsess on something. And people get upset because we were in this academic mindset that all they want to learn about is dinosaurs. But they found that when you let them dive into that, they become much better learners and their brains develop more much more productively then if you're exposing them to everything and trying to get them to, you know, learn Spanish and know physics also, there's stuff that they're trying to teach preschoolers now. So I think that sometimes we need to step back from where we want them to go and see where they are, especially when they're young and let them chase that passion a little bit. It's hard to do as moms, as homeschool moms because we worry, well if they only want to like my oldest loves horses. If they only want to learn about horses, then you know, where does chemistry and algebra fit in? And that will come. But you need to nurture that that passion within them and let them dive into it. And as they learn how to dive into their passion, they're going to keep reading and learning and studying. And that kind of sets them on the path of understanding how to learn. So now when a new problem comes up, they can go about it to problem solve through it. Speaker 1 (07:25): Right. Can we, I want to take a break and then when we come back, can we give some very practical ways to do that with kids and I want to talk about kids with maybe some different learning styles and how that would work with them. Okay. Sound good? Okay. Let's take a quick break and we'll be right back. The home grown generation family expo is here. If you haven't been positive show right now and go do it. Don't worry. I'll wait. Speaker 1 (08:23): Have you done it yet? Great. Then back to the show, we are back with Jennifer again and we're talking about nurturing a love for learning and our kids. And, and what I want to talk about specifically is every kid has a different, or every one of us is made with a different bent, a different learning style, a different personality type. And so as far as learning styles, you know, you've got those who are kinesthetic, those who are visual, those who are auditory. I know there could, the list can go on and on with those, but those would be, you know, the three basics. And then you have different personality types as far as you've got the introverts and the extroverts and those who kind of fall in between. And so can we talk a little bit about, and maybe kind of break that up into the different learning styles and, and personality traits that kids have and how we can foster that love for learning in those kids. So how, how do you, I mean do you want to go one by one? I don't know. I did not prepare you for this. I'm sorry. I, Speaker 2 (09:26): Well, I think in general the learning sales are often discounted. When I was in public school, there was this whole differentiation of lessons and so you needed to try to touch all the learning styles. So the are reaching everybody. But I think sometimes we're afraid to foster that learning style that our child was born with. So we worry that if, for instance, for a kinesthetic learner, if we have them do everything physically, so like when they're learning their times tables, if they are you know, multiplying like how, how far they ran, you know, so like we have them run it and then they multiply that out. Or if they are topping up and down to learn how to count or they are physically moving things from one place to another, you know like the all about spelling where you move things. Speaker 2 (10:20): There's many different versions of that. But we worry that if we, if we just focus on that, then they won't learn how to learn. But in fact, like we're nurturing their gift. And I think that one big thing that's essential to fostering that level of learning is nurturing their gift and how they learn. Because while they need to be exposed to everything in life, you'll be exposed to auditory and visual if you're a kinesthetic learner. So if the best way for you to learn fractions is by cooking, you know, making cookies, it's much better for you to learn how to do that then to struggle through it in a workbook because you're not going to get as much out of it. And that's not like a really a detriment. So I would say overall like, be willing to step back and see how your child learns and be willing to foster that after level of learning. Speaker 2 (11:16): So if you want, I guess if you want to go one by one and think of some ways to do that. So if we already started with kinesthetic, with kinesthetic, anything that is physical like, and it doesn't have to be like outside physical, you know, like running around climbing monkey bars, although that it's very helpful. It can just be like moving things. So instead of drawing a line from one side to the other, you're physically moving things from one container to another, or you are you know, using marbles to count instead of tally marks. Does simple things like cooking, really any of those practical skills can be transformed into a lesson because there's so much math and science and creativity and everything we need to do in everyday life that we often discount. You know, even doing the laundry, you need to balance it right? Speaker 2 (12:10): And you need to sort the colors and you need to decide which temperature and what are the temperatures going to do to this kind of clothing. So everything can be a learning opportunity. It's not that you need to spend a day learning how to do laundry, but for that kinesthetic learner, it's something that they can get their hands on and their minds around to learn it. So I feel like sometimes kinesthetic is a little bit easier because it's easier to imagine, you know, like you can see them doing it. At least for me, it is. For auditory learners, we, we really discount auditory learners, I have to say, because we are so focused on like the visual reading and doing work and workbooks and tests and stuff, which is all visual. It's not auditory. And there's also been, you know, again, lots of people moving away from lectures or [inaudible] extended listening. Speaker 2 (13:11): However, that is a great skill for kids to have. And auditory learners need that. Like they thrive on having all that rich information coming into them. So audio books podcasts, lectures, there's going to get so much out of that. Yes, they're just, it seems like they're just passively sitting there not doing anything, but that is what feeds their soul and gets them excited. And so I really, you know, my, my kids are audio book junkie and I've had people say to me, but don't you make them read books? And they're voracious readers. My younger two don't read yet, but they will sit and listen to audio books for hours. And I always say, if you can read with your fingers, why can't you read with your ears? You know, it's, it's the same thing. So they are devouring this literature. I'd rather have them do that than not read anything because they're frustrated. Speaker 1 (14:08): Right. And Andrew poodle, I would agree with you. We've, we've talked with him about that on the podcast and in the movie. Speaker 2 (14:14): This is why I love Andrew. So I always say that he's my, like my homeschool. Like heartthrob Speaker 1 (14:22): Well, you're not the only one. I'm sure my husband teases me that I'm a groupie, but anyway, as long as you don't have posters of him up on [inaudible]. But I always like, you know, hear his voice in my head when I got back and I'm like, Oh, we should get bracelet. Says Hey, what would Andrew do? What would Andrew do? He just read a book or we just read a book he would listen to. Did you know actually that he, he'll talk about reading books himself, books that he's reading. I know almost every book that he reads, he actually listens to, he, he does almost all audio books himself. Yeah. And and, and that's amazing. I mean, you look at someone like him who's so well versed and well educated and, and he speaks on this a lot and he himself has an audio but guy, you know, he's not a Tory learner and so he, he's a musician of course. So that makes sense. And that's how he enjoys reading is through audio. Speaker 2 (15:16): Yes. And so same story really, you know, no matter how it's, it's the same as like reading a play versus seeing a play. Sure. The same thing, you know, you're still reading Shakespeare. So then the last one would be the visual learner. And these are people that might actually thrive on workbooks, but you really don't want to get stuck in workbooks. So you want them to have a way to not only express themselves visually, but to receive information visually. So really engaging books with lots of pictures. Encyclopedias, not, you don't want water and down with pictures. But there are some wonderful, my boys are really into animals and they have some, you know, volumes, they're like this thick with beautiful photographs and tons of information. But the photographs are really just so engaging that it pulls you in. And that even if you can't read the text or you can't get everything, you're getting information from that. So like infographs would be another thing if you're looking, they would probably, you know, visual learners would probably love to make up an infograph to PowerPoint presentations, things like that, that are engaging their eyes and and getting them thinking. Speaker 1 (16:32): Yup. Yup. And I think I find of most curriculum that are out there today, or she'd say curricula out there today I feel like people are doing a better and better job of creating their, their texts to meet the needs of all of these different learning styles. And so they'll have, you know, the reading portion of it, but then they'll have activities that go along with it, which are great for both of those. And as mom, you know, you can read to your children so that they're not having to sit there and read on their own. And in reality it's going to be much, much better learned when mom reads it out loud. So then they're getting that auditory as well as the visual, if they're following along with you. But then mom typically will read it correctly where the kids oftentimes will not, they'll skip words, they'll mispronounce a mispronounce words. Speaker 1 (17:22): I almost said ms pronunciate don't know where that came from. They will mispronounce words. And so it really is, and again, we talked about reading in the first episode to your kids. And so that's just a great way for them to get that auditory learning. But then mom is sitting there with them and you're still building that relationship and being able to read the texts with them. And that's aside from just fun books and, and you know, great literature that we get to read with our kids. Let's talk very quickly about the, the two different personalities and why, I guess it would be really three cause you've got the introverts, the extroverts, and then those who kind of fall in the middle and helping to nurture that love of learning and kids with different personality styles. Speaker 2 (18:11): Yes. So I have kind of a mix in my family and I am most definitely an introvert. Most of my children are extroverts though. But I realized that when I try to do group learning with them, it's harder to harder on some than others. And so we need to kind of limit what we do together. However, my extroverts need that interaction. So they, like my son thrives on, he has a zoom based Spanish class and he just, that's like his favorite class ever. Cause he can see people and he can talk to them. And so he has a science co-op that he goes to and we do a fine arts co-op. So they're kind of like, they need that constant stimulation of joining things. And one thing that I've realized is that sometimes we get into that habit of joining everything cause we want our kids to be socialized and make sure that they're meeting enough people for some children. Speaker 2 (19:05): That's very painful though. So for my extra words, I need to find a balance though. And so what I do is I let them join things that are going to teach them what I want them. You know, what they need to learn. And then we fill in the gaps. So we're not like when they do a science code, we don't do science elsewhere, you know, this way we have time for other things. And so that gives me enough time to bring them there and let them experience that without feeling like we're constantly behind. And the same with like they're in four H and they do presentations and research and whatever. So I count that towards their language arts and take that out of the language arts. So that gives us time to participate in four H. So I think that is an important balance. You have an extrovert if sometimes not to get caught up in trying to get them out there so much. Speaker 2 (19:53): And then trying to keep up with work, find a way that you can use what they're doing out there to take away from what you need to do, like in books at home. Right. And find outlets online for an introvert. I think you still need to get them out there. You know, you don't, but I don't think that we need the push kids to do things that they don't necessarily want to do all the time. I think though that there is a place where you have to be, well, you need to learn how to live in the world. So we're going to go to, we have book record club quarterly where the kids go and present a book report to our group and then they sit and listen to all the book reports. And so from my one tile beds of painful experience, but I'm like, this is part of what we do, you know, so it's only quarterly and the rest of the time I let it go. Speaker 2 (20:47): So defining strategic ways to give that little taste of having to be in front of people to get over the fear of it, at least without overburdening them, with having to be somebody that they're not. And then providing quiet study, you know like I know an online course was just not in the cards for that child. So I'm providing a more quiet you know, lots of reading and journaling and stuff. And supporting that, you know, that is valid learning. Just as you know, doing public presentations is, it's the same thing. Speaker 1 (21:25): Yeah. Great advice. Great advice. We are out of time but I would love it if you would come back. We most people know we have the backstage pass membership site and one of the things I really want to talk to you about is you talk about 10 easy ways to transform your homeschool and home. Welcome back to The Schoolhouse Rocked Podcast. I am so glad that you are with us today. It is always such an exciting thing to just know that there's someone else on the other end listening and hopefully being encouraged by this podcast and by the guests that we have on. It is my greatest desire to encourage you in your homeschool journey. Speaker 1 (01:04): Whether you have been homeschooling for a really long time or you're just thinking about homeschooling and trying to figure out what this whole home education thing is all about. And so it is always my pleasure to bring exciting guests on the podcast with me. And today is no different. I have a really great homeschool mom. She's a blogger. I'm, her name is Jennifer Elia. She is the founder of sound foundations, homeschool and she has a homeschool mom. It's been even homeschooling for how long? I'm trying to share this for our 11th year. Your 11th year. Okay. So you're in this for awhile. Yeah. So Jennifer, welcome to the podcast. Thank you. Thank you. It is an absolute honor to have you on. Tell us briefly about your family and what you do. Speaker 2 (01:51): So I have four children. My oldest is 15, my youngest is almost three, so we have like the team can hot spring going on. And I was originally a public school teacher. I got my masters in teaching and so my whole thesis was based on how to teach in reach all children so that they can reach their highest potential. And I realize I'm doing that, but the school room was not the place to do it. And so that's what started my journey, looking at homeschooling with husband. And I actually started researching it before we even married. And then when my daughter got my oldest started getting close to school, we kept going back and forth and back and forth and we finally took the leap and said, we'll just do it for kindergarten and here we are 11 years later still homeschooling. Speaker 1 (02:41): That is great. I love that you were a teacher in the classroom. You also were a university or a college professor. Did you college you taught at it? Community college. Okay. Okay. And then you also, you taught, what did you tell me? French. Spanish. Speaker 2 (02:57): I taught French at the college for 12 years. And I also, when I was in public school in public school for five years I did a mixture of French and Spanish. But then I also did the math and reading resource room. So I worked with students who had special needs, which was part of what, through my my study for my masters though, like learning how to really help them. And that's, that's where I realized that these children are being labeled by what they can't do and we're in the system. We're not focusing on their great gifts and giving them the tools to really shine because they were special, just as special as the kids that were at the top of the class. They just weren't getting the opportunity to show everybody that. Speaker 1 (03:40): Yeah. Which is one of the great benefits of homeschooling is that we get to focus on the gifts that God has given to each one of our children, antichrist as well as moms because each mom is gifted in a specific way. And so we get to teach our children according to the gifts that God's given us as well. Yes, that's a blessing. So I want to talk about a few things with you today because you have a wealth of knowledge and information and experience with homeschooling. And one of the things that you talk about a lot on your blog mean that you've spoken on is homeschool, overwhelm, and just eliminating that overwhelm and moms. So let's, let's talk about that because that is something that I know every mom experiences. It does not matter how long you've been homeschooling, whether you've been homeschooling five minutes or five years or 15 years. We all get to that point where we are completely just overwhelmed because homeschooling is not just sitting down doing curriculum with our kids and a few activities and then it's done. It's life. It's everything around us. It's the academics, it's the care for our homes, it's the care for our families. It's any activities we have outside of that. And it can become very overwhelming to where it becomes almost burdensome sometimes. And I'm so, so let's talk about that. Speaker 2 (04:59): Okay. So when I was leading up to starting to homeschool I'm a researcher, so I read everything I could get my hands on about homeschooling. And I remember in one of the books I read, it said like don't make any decisions. In February it was talking all about how February is like this really hard month and you want to quit. And I kept thinking as I'm reading this, and I hadn't homeschooled yet, but I had taught for several years. Like this woman obviously just didn't have our act together. Like if she'd just planned better and then we hit our first February and it was so overwhelming and we were halfway through a year and things weren't going as I had planned, you know, wasn't the same as being in the classroom. I figured I had classroom experience, I have a master's, I have all these material, like this is gonna work. Speaker 2 (05:46): And the longer I went into it, the more I realized that it's not about school. Like it's not school at home. Right. It really is a lifestyle. And trying to, the school within your life and within your home was just completely overwhelming because while you're doing math, there's still laundry piling up and there's dishes and there's phone calls and there's dust bunnies and you know, you need to try to find a way to balance all of that. And I was trying to just, you know, this is school and when school is over, then I'll be, you know, like the housewife. And the mom and whatever and it just wasn't working. So I realized very quickly that I needed to find a way to make this work. And I've realized that one of the problems is that we've all grown up with this school mentality. Speaker 2 (06:35): Like that's what we know. We know going to school, we know sitting in a desk, Mmm. We know like going through marking periods and having homework and then when we come home, all of us want to escape the school in some way, but we don't know how to do it. Like we don't know how to have our children at home because in society they've always gotten on that bus. Well they haven't always, but like in our recollection in, in our, you know, what our family has passed on to us, that's what's happened. And so we need the kind of step back and reorganize our priorities and learn how to live together and learn while we're living. Or it does get completely overwhelming because the laundry and the dishes, no matter how organized and I've tried, like every system there is no matter how organized you are, it's going to be there. Speaker 2 (07:24): And the fact of the matter is that you have children in your house like living and working and playing there all day long. It's never going to look like better homes and gardens. And I think that that is one thing that people get caught up in because I know before it was a blogger, I loved reading blogs and that's how I got into it. And often on blogs we put the, this fantastical version of our life out there. And so then you think, well, I need to do it like her and I need, you know, if I could just buy this curriculum get this schedule, you know, whatever it is, pray this many times a day, then, then my life all fall into place. And what I know now, like being on the other side of the blogosphere is that most of that is marketing. There are some people that are extremely put together and they ha they manage to keep their house beautiful all the time. But the reality is the bed is very stressful. And so eliminating overwhelm is really accepting like your own humanly limitations and relying on grace on that. What you're giving your children is enough. And if your house isn't perfect, it's okay because you really need to weigh what your priorities are within your family, within your homeschool that you can't do everything. You just need to find a balance. Speaker 1 (08:47): Yeah. Let's take a really quick break and then we will come back cause I want to talk a little bit more about this. The home grown generation expo is here. You'll be encouraged by Kirk Cameron, Heidi st John, Sam Sorbo, Andrew Patois, ginger Hubbard, Lee borns, and many others. You can still register and have lifetime access to the replays of the entire event. Don't miss out on this exciting expo. Register today for only 20 dollars@homegrowngeneration.com. That's homegrown generation.com. Speaker 3 (09:24): Hey guys, this is Brooklyn Hampton, daughter of the host of the schoolhouse rock podcast. Do you love this show than stop listening. That's right. Pause the show right now and go leave a review on iTunes or in your favorite podcast app. Let others know how much you love it. Don't worry. I'll wait. Did you do it? Great. Now back to the show. Speaker 1 (09:46): We're talking about how to avoid homeschool overwhelm, and before the break we discussed how sometimes we expect things to look a certain way, but it can never really look that way because that's not reality. And you know, we, I think we have this idea that we need to look like this. Pinterest, perfect homeschool mom, because we see it on Pinterest recently on Facebook. We see it on all the blogs and it looks like all these other, these other moms have it together. And then we start to feel guilty and feel poorly about ourselves because we think, well, why don't I have it together? What's wrong with me? Why can't I get my act together? Yeah. And I think oftentimes that guilt causes more overwhelm in our minds because then we're, we're trying to do even more so that we can, we can be these other be like these other perfect homeschool moms. Speaker 1 (10:36): And as you mentioned before, that's just not a reality. We can't, we can never do that. And I forget who I was talking to. It was some time a while back and it was a homeschool dad actually, and he said, I've realized that I will never, as long as my children are home being homeschooled, I will never have the perfect clean house and have a perfect my, my children, perfectly educated and, and have it all because you cannot have it all. It's not possible. It's still, so then because we come in with this idea that we're bringing kind of the traditional school as we know it into our home, get overwhelmed because it's not working. And then we just at times feel like just throwing up our hands and saying, okay, this, I'm done. I can't do this homeschool thing. Clearly I'm not good at it. That is never where we want moms to be. You know, we exist as a ministry schoolhouse rock to encourage moms and say, you, you've got this, you can do this. You can do it through the strength and the power of the Holy spirit. And he's gonna he's gonna fill in all of the gaps, but give some very practical advice to moms who are feeling really overwhelmed and they're just feeling like, I, I just can't do this another day. Everything's a mess. My life is chaos. How in the world do they move forward? Speaker 2 (11:58): Well, I first want to start with news, mentioned the gaps. And I think that that is something that we get caught up in because when I started homeschooling, like I wanted to do cover everything. I wanted to give my kids the best education ever and there was not going to be a single gap anywhere. And what I realized after years is that every education has gaps. I mean, you could spend $150,000 a year for the best prep school there is when your child will still have gaps in their education. So, as a homeschool mom, we need to not fall into that trap of feeling like if we don't teach them everything, then we will have, then we'll fail. You know, because learning is a lifelong process and what we need to really do is give them the roots and the love of learning so that they can become lifelong learners and become well educated as a matter of practice, not just when they're in school. Speaker 2 (12:55): So I think that's the first place to start because I know that when I started kindergarten, like I was trying to teach her everything there was to ever teach, you know, and at one point I had like 12 different subjects on the roster and now that we're coming towards the end and she's, you know, probably about a year or two away from finishing because she's just rapidly wants to get through it. I realized that there's no way that I could have taught her everything. And every once in a while I think, Oh, there was this and there was that and I realized all I can do is give her that foundation, like that sound foundation, which is where I came up with the name and the wings and you know, set her free and know that I did the best that I possibly could. Was it perfect? No. Could I have done something better? Yes. But at the end of the day, I did everything I possibly could and I gave it my all. And I just let God do the rest. So I think that's a first place to start to eliminate overwhelm. Speaker 1 (13:54): Yeah. Let me say something on that really quickly too, is I feel like if we push our kids so hard because we feel like we have an agenda that has to be met, we've got all these boxes that we need to check off. Oftentimes what I've seen happen is that it really puts us, puts a strain on our relationship with our children because then it becomes so much about the academics and checking off the boxes instead of building that relationship with our kids. And like you said, and we're actually going to talk about this in the next episode, is nurturing a love of learning and teaching our kids how to learn. And so I, I think building that relationship with them is so much more important than the academics because when you have that, then they're going to be more willing to learn anyway. You know, I hear about moms who their kids are kicking and screaming and throwing tantrums and they're like, you know, they don't want to learn. Speaker 1 (14:46): They don't want to do anything with school. And oftentimes I'm like, just take a step back, drop for a little while. And by school, I mean the academic part of it, but drop the academics for a little while, build that relationship with your kids and then slowly bring it back in. You don't have to do everything at once. I mean, you said no, you, you know, you had a list of 12 different things you had to do and you realized that there's just no way that's going to work. But building those relationships with our kids and then slowly bringing in the other things that you want them to learn and teach them how to love learning those things. Speaker 2 (15:22): Yes. Yes. And I was, when I was caught in a very bad season of overwhelm and struggle with my homeschool, I went to a homeschool conference and Andrew kudo, I happened to be there, go. I didn't really even know who he was before I went there and I went to all of his conferences and at the end I got to actually speak to him and I kind of poured my heart out and he's like, it's okay. Like you're doing okay. I'm like, but she's not. He's like, it'll come. It's like, just keep reading and you know, it'll be okay. And he said, and one thing that he said in one of his conferences that I kind of live by is when nothing is working, just read good books. And so that's one of the, you know, like that's really what it comes to him. And that's where learning comes from, right, is books, not textbooks and workbooks and tests. Speaker 2 (16:08): So if it's all holding apart and you're overwhelmed, just find a good pile of book and your kids will be learning. Even if it's not on your schedule, even if it's not like something you can check off on the curriculum, they're learning and it gives you a chance to decompress. So we have regular reading week built into a year when everybody just read. And so if they're behind on their academic reading, then they read that for the week. But otherwise they just find something to read and it gives me a chance to kind of catch my breath in between trimesters, but it also lets them just chase their own interests and not just be stuck in a list of what they have to read. Speaker 1 (16:47): Right, right. Yeah, totally. I love, love good books. And there's there are few better ways to build relationships with our kids than just sitting down with them and just reading a really good book with them. So the other thing that I know you're passionate about and I have found to be very, very important in homeschooling, especially when we're feeling overwhelmed, is finding support. And I always, it's so funny cause when I think about finding support, you know, oftentimes people, especially kind of that millennial crowd will think, well, I'll just go on Facebook and I'm going to find people there to help support me. And there are a lot of great resources on Facebook and there are a lot of really well meaning people and a lot of really wise people on there who, you know, oftentimes I'll read comments, questions and comments and I'll think, yes, you're right on. And then other times people will put questions on there and there will be answers. And I'm like, no, you are so you, no, no, no, don't do it that way. And so there's that social media and of it, but then there's also of course, local support that people need. So how have you found ways to find good support in your homeschooling and then how do you suggest other people to do that as well? Speaker 2 (18:00): It took me a long time to find that because I really had to get out of the school mentality and out of the circles that were connected to the school I came from a long line of public school teachers, so everybody that I knew was somehow, you know, connected the school. And then when my mom friends, like all their kids went to school, I just lost that whole safety net. So there are more homeschoolers out there than anybody realizes. And I realize that some people live in very rural areas, but I guarantee you there's somebody who's homeschooling there. And I wish I had known that from the beginning that I hadn't just pinned, falling, like blog all across the country because I never realized we lived on a little Lake and there were actually three other homeschool families that lived on that Lake. Speaker 2 (18:44): And it took me years to find out that they even existed. Wow. So now with social media, it's easier to find them though, I feel. So if you'd go on Facebook and you put in like your local town or your state and homeschoolers, something will show up. And we are tapped into a very wonderful group of homeschoolers that I actually found randomly to a blog that I followed. There was a spinoff local Facebook group of people who followed it and I actually connect, most of them were homeschoolers. It turned out and I kept it with them and that's how we got involved with them. And it's amazing resource because even though we're spread out pretty far, I mean I'm on the Northern reaches of it. Some people are up to like two hours South or West of here. And we try to meet in central locations. Speaker 2 (19:32): It really is wonderful cause our kids have that support and I know that they understand me and they speak the same language. Because I think that's a big thing when you start homeschooling and people don't understand it. It's hard to get that support and you don't want people to know they are struggling because you don't want them to say, well see, I told you it never works. Or obviously you just can't do this because that's already in the back of your mind. Like, I'm not qualified. I can't do this. I'm never going to succeed because of the fear. And you need to shut that out. Like don't let the devil get your year because you know that's not the truth, but it's already there. And the only, the last thing you need is for someone to actually say it to you and then it makes it like it's real. Speaker 1 (20:15): Right, right. Yeah. Finding that support is so, so important and people who will will really encourage you and your walk you know, just finding those like-minded families who will say, let's do this together. Yes. So we are out of time for this podcast, but will you come back again? Yeah, let's, let's do a part two because I actually want to talk with you more about nurturing that love of learning in our kids. And then we have a few other things that you have some ways to transform your home and homeschool suggestions on that as well. So, okay, so let's come next time we will talk more about that. Thank you guys for listening today. Jennifer, where can people find out more about you? If you go to the SoundFoundationsHomeschool.com or you can find me on Pinterest and Facebook at Sound Foundations Homeschool. Okay, great. And we'll put all of those links, of course, in the show notes that people can find them there. So thank you guys. Have a fantastic day and we will see you back here next time. Bye.

Yvette Hampton:           Hey everyone, this is Yvette Hampton and I am so glad to have you back with me for the podcast and I have an amazing guest on today who I actually have had on the podcast once before. So you are a return guest, which is really fun. Linda Lacour Hobar is the author of The Mystery of History. I'm sure many of you use it, but If you don't, you definitely want to check it out. Our family uses it. We use the audio version and we have the book version as well, which we absolutely love.                         As a matter of fact, I remember when we first started homeschooling and we were looking for a history curriculum that was taught from a Biblical perspective. And that was really important to us. And we've talked a lot about this on the podcast that we wanted something that was going to direct our girls’ hearts towards Scripture. And so many, many people said, well you need to get The Mystery of History. And I was like, it has a really cool name, so it must be great. And now I am sitting in the dining room of Linda and it is so much fun to get to sit here. We for those of you who have been tracking with us over the past year, my actually past couple of years, you know that we travel a lot and we've been traveling for filming the movie. And so this summer we have traveled a lot.                         We have been on the road the entire summer and we were coming through Memphis and you had mentioned to me awhile back that you lived in the Memphis, Tennessee area. And so I called you up and I said, Hey, can we come and see you? And so here we are sleeping in hers. I'm an empty nester and have three guest rooms. I'm like, absolutely. You come on, you are. And, and it's been fun. Talk about that a little bit about your family. Cause you were a homeschool mom for many years. Actually, through your whole, your children's childhood, right? So you've got three kids. Tell us about your kids really quickly. Yes. So we homeschooled for 17 years and my children are very much grown up now. They're 34 30 and 26 which means that I was homeschooling back in the late eighties and nineties right before there was.com can you even imagine there was no internet, there was no cell phones. Linda:               So, I'm a true veteran. Yeah. I wish sometimes that we were back in those days because it seems like things would have been simpler in a way where they probably yes and no. There was fewer opportunities which actually left us home more and at home we got things done. So there is that beauty because homeschool does work best at home. Right. I would say one of today's homeschool moms challenges is that there is so much opportunity that you have to kind of be careful because you could wind up, you're away from the house and then you're not homeschooling your everywhere else but home. So it's right. Sometimes there's simpler days really. There's some legitimate to that. Yes, yes. And we always are having to find a balance between having our kids socialized, of course, because that was always the big thing for so many years is you know, homeschool kids are cooped up in their houses all day, every day of the week and they need to get out and explore the world and socialize with people. Yvette:             And so, it was, I think the tides have shifted, but somehow, they've shifted almost to the extreme, right? Being away from the home so much. So we do have to find an important balance. And you've been in the homeschool community for a really long time because, I don't know, when did you first write The Mystery of History? Linda:               Volume one: 2000. I was having a midlife crisis of sorts. I was turning 40. It was the year 2000 and now y'all all know how old I am. And I was praying for about a year. The Lord was stirring it in my heart, but it was in the year 2000 that I started writing. Yvette:             Wow. God has used you in an amazing way to write this curriculum that still, you know, 19 years later God is still using it and you've gotten your revisions coming out.                         You have a new revision that just came out for volume one and it's beautiful. You guys, I got to see it today and it's colorful and it's vibrant and it a, you've just done an amazing job in, it's not just the colorful pictures in it, but the content that is in it and we, our family lives The Mystery of History. It's, it's what we use for history. So take God be the glory. That's right. And as I'm hearing, you know, I've really gotten to hear your heart for families and homeschool moms and really what God has put on you to help moms like myself who really are not history buffs like you are. And so you've been able to help me to teach history, but you go to homeschool conventions and you get to speak to families all over the country, which is amazing. And I remember meeting you back in, I think it was March, we were at Teach Them Diligently in Nashville and we were talking about some of your workshops and you said you did one on Mary and Martha. Linda:               “Mary and Martha Decide to Homeschool.” Yvette:             That's right. And I was so intrigued by it and I was like, wow, I really want to know more about this. And so that's why we're doing a podcast with you today. Cause I want to talk more about this whole Mary and Martha idea cause I'm not sure yet where I fall in line with. Am I a Mary? Am I a Martha? So, so let's talk about this. Explain to me this workshop that you do on and Martha. Well, in order to do this subject, any justice, we really do need to go to the Scripture first and find there's four stories about married Martha in the new Testament. And for those who may not know, these sisters, there's Mary Martin, their brother Lazarus, and their stories really are fabulous. It still amazes me that we actually have this insight into these new Testament lives. I mean just how precious they are. So, without being too much of a Bible teacher, I am going to just follow the Scripture so that we start there because really, we're only deriving and gleaning things that we think we could know about them. I mean, I've not met these ladies, but based on some of their responses to Jesus, this is what picking up. So Linda:               Then that all applies to homeschool moms and we're going to get there. So if I may, I'll start with Luke tin has the classic story that most people know. That's the one you might be familiar with. You hear pastors preach on it. And this is the story where basically Jesus comes to visit Mary and Martha and Lazarus in their home. And Martha is a bit perturbed with her sister because Martha feels like she's doing all the work in the kitchen. And she were literally fusses and kind of wags her finger and like, Jesus, will you not rebuke my sister who's just sitting around listening to you? And so that's the famous story. And the end of that story is that Jesus does not rebuke Mary. He's actually like, no, Martha, you're missing it. She's doing the better thing because Mary was sitting at the feet of Jesus sitting, wanting to eat clean wisdom from him and learn from him listening.                         And of course, all my Martha friends will say, somebody had to put the food on the table, and I know that and we're going to get to that. And she has a servant's heart. Martha does. But Jesus does push back on that. He's like, you're missing it. You're missing the heart. You know, don't be so consumed. But another story in the new Testament that's much longer, but we can get a lot of the two gals out of it is the S the passages that come out of John 11. And so this is the story. So we've already had the story in John of them just serving Jesus. But this is another story now where Lazarus, their brother is actually dying. And so Mary and Martha, a call out to Jesus like, please come because our brother is so sick, he's dying. Well, interesting. The passage says in John 11:5five, “Now, Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.”                         So right there to clear the air. He doesn't favor one sister over the air. He never does. He loves them all. And then it goes on to say, so when he heard that he was sick as in Jesus, when he heard Lazarus was sick, he stayed two more days in the place where he was. So Jesus purposefully delayed his visit to let something horrible happen. The man's just sick. Jesus doesn't go right away. And it's not because he doesn't care. It's because he has a plan. So I think it's very interesting that we see that Jesus just allowed something to happen. So Lazarus does die. And then what happens next is that we get a picture of Martha's response first to Jesus once he finally shows up and she's peeved. And then we have a picture of Mary when Jesus shows up. So let me glean a little out of this just with you.                         It says now Martha, as soon as she heard Jesus was coming when and met him, but Mary was sitting in the house, so can't you just picture Martha? She kind of marches over there like Jesus and she says, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. Even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you. Now, what is critical in this is that Jesus has such a relationship with Martha. He must respect her, right? Because what he does to respond to her is give her a theology lesson, one that he won't give Mary, but they don't give to Martha. This is an incredibly faithful woman. I mean, I do love Martha. And he goes on to say to her, I am the resurrection and the life like boom. I mean he just lays it on her and you know, keep in mind this little new Testament family, they haven't yet known Jesus to die and be risen from the dead yet they don't know and they don't know that I don't even know what the hell are you referring to.                         So that's like, okay, but Martha says, and we have the record of her faith and testimony. Martha says, yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the son of God who has come into the world. Whoa. I mean this is an amazing woman, right? And again, she has not yet seen Jesus die and come back to life. But she is like convinced. So she has great faith. But anyway, the story goes on and Martha sins word and says, Jesus is so many of you. But, but she tells her in secret. I don't know why Martha feels like she has to tell that to Mary in secret, except that maybe she's afraid Mary's going to cause a scene. This is just my guess is like I know when I go to a restaurant with my family and they're always like, mom, you know, don't call the scene if you don't like me to bring them birthday presents at restaurants because I want to call it a scene.                         So, I just picked her. Mary is much more demonstrative or feelings or something. So Martha's like just in secret, like Jesus is summoning you, which again, Martha has to meet him on the road. But Jesus summons Mary. So he is tuned in her broken heart. The brother's dead, right. So what's interesting is, so then it says also Mary has a little support group. So she's there with her friends as it says, you know, the Jews are with her in the house or comforting her. So Larry has a support group. Martha doesn't, she's self-sufficient, right? But Mary has a little group of people in any way. It says Mary then went to Jesus and saw him and she fell down at his feet and said, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. The exact same words Martha said, but in a different posture, right?                         And in a different manner. Martha's kind of busted and a Mary's broken and at his feet. And I think the picture, I get a Mary over and over that she up, very broken woman. We don't know her whole story, but I see a lot of brokenness on her. She's very distraught a lot. So she's more weeping. And then when Jesus sees her weeping, do you know what he did? Is it's the shortest verse in the Bible. You know the one come to Jesus. What? Jesus wept. Jesus isn't weeping because Lazarus is dead. He's weeping because he loves his people and he sees their pain. He's weeping at Mary's broken heart. He's not so prized, and he's not surprised. And of course, the next part of the story is that he does in fact raise Lazarus from the dead. We don't hear peep out of the sisters.                         Again, I'm on that particular thing. But Lazarus is raised from the dead. What an incredible, just foreshadowing of what price is going to do. So any way to beat him. But here's something neat. There's another story of them. Okay, so I've given you, there's the classic stories. Then there's the raising of Lazarus, but there's one more. John 12 get this as a six days before the Passover came to Bethany where Lazarus was, who had been dead, who he raised from the dead and there they made him a supper, get this and Martha serve. It's like, and she had learned a thing. She's still serving because Martha is Martha, right? So Jesus get her, she's an toner and Mary's doing a better thing, but she's still serving because somebody still has to put the dinner on the table and it's Martha. Yeah, this woman is faithful, so I still love her, but this is what is happening.                         In contrast then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, wiped his feet with her hair and the houseless filled with the fragrance of the oil. How many of you guys lose, you know, use essential oils, right? Can't you just imagine the fragrance we're talking about a year's worth of wages is what this oil costs. This is an extravagant act of worship. Now picture this too. She's wiping his feet with her hair. Well, I know that that was a certain tenderness and all, but I also, there's a part of me thinking this was a spontaneous act of worship. Was she unprepared? Did she not like bring a cloth? Right? And like knowing in speech, she's like, I'll just use my hair like she is. So this is so just, she's probably really not thinking ahead because again, they could have used this money maybe differently, but we know in her spirit, she's anointed him as the savior.                         He is, she wants to serve. And it's again a foreshadowing up because the, these oils, this is like burial, ceremonial preparation and all this. And I don't even know if she knows that, but she's just doing this. Now what's so neat is that of course the disciples bus, Oh, you know, this could have been used and given to the poor. Jesus says, let her alone. She has kept us for the day. My burial, they still don't even know he's going to die. Right. And so let her alone and then it goes on and there's this bonus in Mark that just, this is what gets to me, Mark, another gospel writer will say this is Jesus speaking. And he says, assuredly, I say to you, where ever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a Memorial to her, Oh wait a minute, the Bible over and over spotlights Jesus.                         But in this one instance, Jesus is going back to what Mary had done again. I'm picturing a broken woman. She's not getting the dinner on the table. People are fussing at her. She's got a support group. She cries a lot. She's kind of a mess. She had broken this oil, puts it on his feet and everything and Jesus says that that act would be remembered where ever the gospel is preached. Well, that's a message for eternity and I just am kind of like still a little taken back that of all the little heroes of the faith, he could have pointed out, he points a little light at Mary just a minute. Like it's okay with him that she's on meth. Yes. Like he really is okay. K with that and loves her despite her. Like maybe he just loves it. She so needs him because this is what I'm picturing is and needy woman.                         I'm thinking of homeschool moms all over the country right now. Right. That's the context of this talk is you got to know these sisters. Yes. Yes. So, okay, so the workshop that you do is titled Mary and Martha decided to homeschool. Right? Which, which I love this cause as you're talking about Mary, I'm thinking of we're, we're probably split down the middle between homeschool moms. You know, the mom said, I talked to you, many of them are married, many of them are Martha. And there are so many aspects and personality traits from each one of them. So can we talk a little bit more about that? Because I want to figure out like, yeah, who, who personalities, who am I? I want you to tell me today who I am. We have a crave coming to know me a little bit. So you might already have an idea.                         I think I am and, and I'm a giveaway to probably by the way, I'm already speaking, but let's, let's hold that thought. Okay, let's go to the personalities. Just kind of dissect them. And I got a little professional help with this one because there was a man named Anthony who writes about these learning styles. And so based on some of his, I've applied his findings to married Marco. So he didn't do the Mary Martha part. That was just for me. But he would say, let me back up a minute. That people by personality typically are either concrete or they're abstract. So let's pause concrete meaning some people really thrive and bloom and grow on very tangible things. Black and white, right or wrong a B, I mean they're just concrete and so they manage things well. Then the abstract person is all over the place.                         The abstract is really a gross in the intangibles. The non-measurables. So they're inspired by beauty, love, peace, things you can't touch and hold. But that means something. Okay. So you have two very different, so people typically are concrete or abstract, but on top of that there's a way that people process those things and they process some typically either sequentially, which is in order or randomly, which is absolutely no order. So let's go back to those definitions. The obviously the sequential person finds natural order logical. There's an a, there's a B, there's a C, there's a one, there's a two, there's a three. And in fact of violate that is rock in the universe. You know what I mean? This person is tight ship. Yup. The random person is actually so confined by that. The random person doesn't operate well because a random person, they're just, they're just all over the place and it's like they're going to go with what feels right next.                         Not what's logical at all. So it's a collision of views and handling. So what I have in my, what I've derived with Mary and Martha from the new Testament is that I think that if you put a concrete sequential together, those are all the thinkers of this world. I think that's Martha. I just think that's her. And they would be very task oriented. And then if you were to put together the abstract as well as the random, well you got a hot mess and that's pretty much married. All right. Those are just what I derived from these sisters from what we can get. And you know, I haven't met them, but I can't wait to get to him and to meet him. But I think that that's what they are. And so again, Anthony Grigorik has defined those four and now some people, there's a few random people that crisscross on the seventh those.                         But I'd say most people, if they're concrete, they're also sequential. And most people, if they're abstract, they're also reading them. So really talking left brain, right brain, you're talking about free spirits versus, right. The non, which we need both in the world. Oh, absolution. Yeah, in a nutshell, we'll just call them thinkers and feelers. That's an easier way to look at it. And everybody thinks everybody feels but to different degrees. So let's just generalize thinkers, feelers. So now that I've said all that, let's go back to Martha. Okay. As a thinker, that means she's very task oriented and Oh my goodness, I know this Martha. Well, this is my story of Martin. I know this. Martha will because my mother is a Martha extraordinary, my sisters and Martha, my first born is a Martha. My husband has marked the qualities in that. There's a lot of things that are very precise.                         So, let me give it away now I am so not that, okay, I'm going to be a Mary, let me give to us now. I'm a Mary all the way through. So that means my entire life I have been surrounded by Martha's and in comparison, they're the efficient people. They're the logical people, they're the people that you want to get a job done, you give it to them kind of people. And you know, I can't measure up. I mean at least that's kind of how I feel. You know what I'm saying? I'm like, like I've been, you know, like, so that's been my problem. I've been like kind of surrounded by that. And some other examples of that is I'm like, let's go back to my mother again. She was a great mother and how she like took care of us because she liked to clean, she liked to cook and she's well organized in the pantry with Stockton.                         But it meant that if it was time for dinner, it's time for dinner. It doesn't matter how pretty it is outside, if you want to ride bikes no sooner now kind of a person. And she wanted things done a certain way. So all of say I was very cared for, loved by what my mother did for us as her gift is, she is a servant through and through, never complaining. Right. Okay. So that's all like beautiful. But I'm not any of those things. So let me ask you a quick question that about her. Did she, you said she was a servant through and through. Did she have more of a servant, hospitable heart or did she do those things because it was the, the thing that needed to be done? Both. Both. Okay. Both. I would say both. Yeah. Because it was with joy.                         She did those things. So she had met Mary and her two. Oh yeah. Because, sure. Yeah. Strongly loved us and all that, but it was going to express itself through Martha and Scott. You know what I'm saying? Okay. That's just the right thing to do. Okay. So let me now transition to the Mary yes. Definition and the Mary personality by what I've just described. I think Mary's on the opposite end of this spectrum. I think she's abstract and random. And so what that looks like is that she's very driven by feelings to a fault. They are the higher calling and C, Martha, the higher calling is getting the job done. She's a thinker for Mary. The higher calling is really paying attention to her heart. It just is. It's the higher calling. And so Mary can put feelings above a task. That doesn't mean she's a loser.                         He's not lazy, but she can rank things differently. Sure. She's a free spirit and she's all over the place. She runs late. Forget a planner. I mean, I'm notoriously late. Truthfully, she's really not the most responsible woman. She's not the person you want to pile on too much responsibility cause it really just may not get done right. But it's really like okay with her, which is what Martha can never understand. Like mothers just doesn't understand that, you know? So in contrast how I said my mother very much love just by what she did for us. And that's just true. I really don't have a servant heart. I hate to admit it now. I love people. I'm a people person, but like I don't love people by what I do for them. I love people by the experience I'm going to have with them. Okay. It's just a little bit different because in my mind, I guess I'm like, well, you can get the ketchup.                         I mean, I just don't write about my chair where my mother would because I don't know what that's like an act of love for her. And I'm like, but, but because I'm, there's so much abstract as in so much feeling, everything's in tangible, but my values are love, joy, beauty, peace. That means what I'm going to do is I'm going to pray with you. I'm going to invest time with you. I may counsel you, I write, I'm going to journal, I'm going to ride bikes at sunset. And let dinner get cold. I mean I'm going to be spontaneous. Yep. It goes on and on, whereas, you know, like spontaneity and my mom like those just whatever, which by the way, I haven't permission to completely give her as an example because she's so smart that ever. And we have done one of these sessions together and the little quiz I have coming is all based on my mom and she totally loved this.                         So, I'm not picking on my mom because she knows absolutely how much I love her. And let me say those too. We've both grown a little as we've aged, I probably become more of a Mart than she's probably become more of a mirror in that sweet. I mean, you know, cause we all have, we all have some of this, but anyway I guess so being a Mary and eventually we'll get to homeschool with it, but it meant clearly I'm a softy mom who's going to struggle with boundaries. I'm going to struggle with, you know discipline. I'm going to struggle with rules because inside I don't like any of that. Right. routine and schedule actually just SAPs the life out of me. It stifles me. I want freedom. I want creativity. I want, yeah, I'm, I'm all that. And so, where Mark, that's going to get the job done.                         So, can you just imagine them in homeschool, right? I mean, you've got two very different homes. So anyway, I think you need to go to your little sponsor thing. Yes. Let's take a quick break. We'll be right back. So let's bring it back to homeschooling. And how does, how does being a Mary or a Martha relate to us as homeschool moms? Okay. Now again, I know I'm generalizing a little bit here. Give me some grace on that, but I could give you just four little snapshots. I think of what this means. A Martha looks like as a homeschool mom. All right, so you're ready? So I would say number one, this is the gal with lesson plans. Premade. Okay. And advanced. She's the pantry. Field trips. She can handle them. She's the co-op leader. And she should be like, this is the woman again.                         She's going to get it done. Yep. I would also say she might follow the classical model of education because we all know it's the hardest, takes a lot of preparation. I would say she again can run that homeschool co-op very well. And in my imagination, because I don't know, I'm not one, but I would imagine her homeschool is lined with filing cabinets and there's a place for everything. Yes. So we're at a timeline on her wall. Oh yeah. Yeah. It actually on the wall. Now in contrast, if we dropped Mary in to a homeschool world, and maybe this is just me, but she doesn't handle the lesson plans. She runs late for the field trips when you're as a field trip coordinator. And it was a mistake because it's like I had to make all the phone calls and didn't go very well.                         I liked them because I liked the adventure and spontaneity, but I need somebody else to organize it. Right. I would also say she's more inclined to follow an unschooling or eclectic approach because for one, she buys everything. She's feelings oriented. Right. So she can't make a decision. Right. You can't just pick one. Right. And she's all over the place. Let's see. I would also say you really don't want her in charge of your homeschool co-op, but you want her there on the committee to welcome the new people. Yeah, she's going to pray and counsel and share and love on them. That will come very natural to her. But you know, running the meetings, I don't know. And then last I would say her classroom is lined with artwork that she intends to frame one day, but you know, it's never going to happen.                         You know how hard it is to frame those little things, the momentum that you think you're going to frame. So I just have a little tip, Mary low. So if you're hanging up with one piece of scotch tape, you know what happens in time is those tops curl and then that little piece of artwork is curly. So just give up the idea that you're going to hang it in a frame because you're not, neither are you going to scrap bark, but hang it with two pieces of tape and don't last a lot longer. [inaudible] You're great. And then one day they all, yeah, to put the day that was, that was free Yvette:             So, okay, so in regards to actually homeschooling and figuring out who we are, you have a quiz? Linda:               Actually, why don't I give you the quiz. Okay. And let's see. I haven't heard these questions yet. I know I'm springing them on you. Just raw. I have to write this down. You do? Okay. So for your listeners, all of explain what I'm doing, I basically, I have 20 questions. Okay. So I'll try to go through them fast. Okay. 20 questions and really you either give yourself a minus one or a plus one depending on what I dropped down one through 20 [inaudible] cast right now. Yes. That might good. Helpful paper. Yeah, in Mary. Okay. Paper. You've got to go find paper and you're going to need to double space this. Just a quick one through 20 and if you're with a friend named Martha, she has a pen and paper for you. Now, you know, Mary actually didn't make it on time to the podcast even, you know she's not here.                         She's getting the, yeah, she's watching it later. Okay. Listening later, one through 20 I'll, I'll run through these quick and you're going to go minus one or plus one and then we're going to add them up at the end. And then we will, I have a scale that'll show you like where you lean. Okay. And by the way, this one are plus one minus ones or plus one. So you either get negatives or positives. Okay? By the way, if you wind up with a zero, you're like the perfect person. You're right in between the [inaudible] enjoying math. Am I going to have to add these at the end? You will. I use my calculator if you need to, but you know. Okay, so number one, okay. If more often than not, your library books are overdue. Give your cell phone minus one. Because what that means is that you probably am married.                         So, see Mary gets got minus ones. Okay? So that's it. Now. By the way, I'm notorious for being late at the library books. It doesn't matter how many times I write it down on the calendar, I just can't do it. And of course as homeschools, we take them by the basket, right? And so I always, I just, one's going to get lost under the couch. I just decided it was a handling fee and just paid them some. Okay. Number two, if you have ever menu planned for a month or have several meals in the freezer, give yourself a plus one because that's a Martha. So do I get it for myself? A zero self-esteem never happened. Yeah. If you have never menu plan for a month and you don't have meals in the freezer, if you don't, just put a zero. But if you have that, give yourself a plus.                         No one, Nope, never done that. Okay. Number three, if your family assumes you'll run late or you relate to this workshop, cause I usually do this in a workshop, give yourself a minus one the family just knows you'll be like minus one always late. Okay? Number four. If your shirts or shoes are organized by color, give yourself a plus one. See, I'm describing my mom. Everything's color coded in her closet. There's no way that's happening in my closet. Okay. Number. Let's see. Number five, if you're a curriculum junkie, because it's so hard to sell the old stuff, you get a minus one. So your curriculum junkie, you can't part with it cause you know how hard it is to sell curriculum on the internet. Oh my gosh. You have to [inaudible] numbers. That's a minus one. You can't do it. I got ya. Yeah. Number six, if you're in extreme coupon or, or at least close to it, you get a plus one.                         That's the thing with those coupons. I have time for that. I've decided coupons. I mean, why did they want to pay me for cutting out little pieces of paper? I just really don't understand that. I just go with, there's a tag and it's yellow, then it costs less and I buy three coupons. I throw them away. I can't do it. I like your logic. I can't do it. It's can I? Oh I know. Yeah. And I know some gals who beat me up for that. But you're good at it. They're gifted and they should do it, but like I'm not cause they're Martha's given it up. Right. Number seven if you're to do list is on the, on the back of your hand or on an envelope or on a receipt, you get a minus. Wow. Okay. Confession. Friends. I had to really work hard to give her this piece of paper.                         She's at my house and I had a hard time finding it. Aren't you glad I didn't give you an envelope writing this on my arm? I'd have to, by the way, I don't know where many Martha's who write on the back of their hands, but this is a Mary thing and I sometimes wish Sharpie. I put an important note right there. Oh yeah. No, I don't. You know, I'm pretty certain I'm a Mary, but I do not write on my hands. Okay. I don't like my hands to be dirty. Oh, okay. Well that's, that's bothersome to me. That's funny. All right. Number nine, if you scribe [inaudible] as one, we're on eight. Oh, don't listen to my numbers cause I've moved some things around. Okay. Okay. Next. If you cry spontaneously to love songs on the radio or to hymns at church, give yourself a minus one. Yvette:             Oh no, I don't. That's why you don't cry. I am not a crier. Oh my goodness. Linda:               Okay. Number 10 if you buy in bulk, but you work out of labeled containers that are just the right size for your cabinets or cupboards, you get a plus one. Oh. So if you're that lady, you know, you go to Costco, you buy in bulk, and then you have a place for it at home and smaller individual, not me. Okay. But that's my mom numb. Next. If you often start school in your pajamas and you do family read-alouds from your bed, which is unmade, well you get a minus one. There's just nothing like Charlotte's Web in the sheets. Right, right from the sheets.                         I love read-alouds in the bed yet unmade. And that was the, that was [inaudible] doesn't mind this one because I time everything. Got it. Next, if you organize small parties or meetings on an Excel spreadsheet, you get a plus one. I think that Martha and Excel go well together. Huh? Here's the next one. If you save the baby teeth of your children, give yourself a minus. What does a pregnancy test count? Because the [inaudible] I have saved my pregnancy. Is that disgusting? I shouldn't admit that on kids baby teeth. It's over time break apart, but I have them. I can tell you where they are in these little containers in my bedroom. Here's, here's my theory. I feel like, listen, those baby teeth are like metals of honor because you know how hard it was for them to get those towels. That's how you feel about the pregnancy test.                         11 stinking years! It took me to get as and or pregnancy tests. Why you can't, I had many, many negative ones, so yeah, after that many years to get a positive one, you keep it still in a Ziploc. At least put it in a Ziploc. It's fine. She washed them off. But yeah, these babies, he's like, we should make jewelry or something. [inaudible] That baby in the middle of the night. We were cutting those tapes together, making back lists out of my pregnancy test, I promise. Okay. That would be gross. Oh wait, where were we? Is that the minus one? And you're getting one for having a pregnancy test or I'll have to change my desk. Okay. Okay. we just got a few more. If you had a shopping list for a homeschool convention before you went [inaudible], you get a plus one, or maybe you just know what you're going to, you know, next year. Linda:               If you pray often for God's mercy because of mistakes that you've made, you get a minus one. Say again, I think, by the way, let me answer it. This little thing about Mary, you know, sometimes I think when pastors talk about Mary and Martha and they talk about Mary at the feet of Jesus, I think they make her out to be this very saintly, Holy woman. And I'm like, you know, Martha was the faithful one who's not going to break the rules and get into Mischief. But Mary, I don't think she was at Jesus's feet cause she was so wholly, my personal theory is I think she was a very broken woman with a lot of sin in her life who was at his feet out of pure worship and need, and so again, if you're the woman praying for God's mercy a lot, because you really, you know, you don't, you don't keep healthy boundaries easily.                         You, you do make mistakes. Big ones. I think that's a Mary thing. Okay. Anyway, I just think that's a misunderstanding of her. It is speed. It's not good. She likes this flow. Right, right, right. It's more like, Oh yeah, she needs Jesus. She needs Jesus. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Next, on a much lighter note, if you set up the coffee pot or tea before you go to bed at night, you get up plus one. When I go home to see my mother, this always happens. She'll be like, Hey honey, so do you want to set the coffee up tonight? I'm like, why would I do today what I can do tomorrow? She though would set her teapot up at night before she goes to bed. So then in the morning she just has turned it on, like just got a little cups go, we'll take it.                         And I never, I don't do that. No I don't do that. My oldest daughter who I told you is a Martha really? And that's because she started making her own lesson plans in fifth grade. That's when I figured that out. Why we're making them. She started making her own. I'm like, Oh you need more structure. Yeah. So anyway, she told me to like a week ago, I kid you not. She's like, Oh by the way, cause he just got this new workout routine and she's like, I'm just making the coffee like at night, but not turning it on. But I have it already and I just bust it out loud. I'm like, you are a Martha, like as you're doing it at night before you go to bed, which a great idea, but I'm just not in my universe. It's not going to happen. Okay. Sorry I do today.                         What you could put off till tomorrow. That's kind of, and I think this is, Oh no. Okay, hold on. Almost there. If you unpack the same day that you get home from a trip, I think you get a plus one because the end of a trip, no, I'm going to unpack my hair products. Right. My toothbrush and that was about it. The rest is going to sit for a couple of days. Just beat. I can't do that now. But Martha is in the, it is sorted. It is, yeah. My husband impacts the day he gets home. I mean it's put away if one lunch this week was a happy and granola bar that you found in the bottom of your purse, you'd get a minus one because he, again, Mary's, I'm thinking of time. Time is a tangible thing and she's into intangibles. That's why she runs late. She doesn't manage time well.                         So, she forgot she was leaving to run an errand right near noon when she should be hungry or you know, it's not on her radar. Right. So lunch is the granola bar. Yeah, bottom of the purse. If you offer your house, gets a hot breakfast, you get a plus one. I think that's kind of a Mark the thing now friends, she spent the night with me last night and she got boiled eggs this morning. But I don't know if that counts. You didn't get like paying the whole [inaudible]. I think it counts. They were delicious. But I gave you like a buffet. Yes it was fantastic. But Martha could do more than that. It was pretty, it wasn't, you know what? And by the way, some people listen to me giving this and they just kind of assume like maybe I'm just a disaster like around my house and stuff because they know claiming to be like a Mary who's a little bit, all this storehouse is very [inaudible] and comfortable.                         Well, I'll tell you why I figured that out. Mary is inspired by beauty to the point that she might keep it kind of tidy. Well, don't go look in my drawers event, right? Because there'll be real messy on the inside. But on the outside is kept kind of pretty because that does motivate me. I need that. So my space is, you know, kind of together. Yes. But that's different from, you know, they're different. So anyway. Okay. We're getting closer. Spontaneous field trips that count for school. You get a minus one, right. Can I go on field trip 10 on that one? You know, like, Hey look, there's a Caterpillar Digger next door. Yes. Dig it up, whatever. Let's count that. We travel full time almost. I mean right now full time, the other day we were driving through Texas and we came across Cadillac ranch, which I had never heard of before.                         And it's this random place in the middle of the desert where this artist, he, he buried a bunch of Cadillacs in the ground. Like they're like standing halfway up like Stonehenge kind of. Yes. Kind of get a storm. I got a point. Yes. And then it gets better because people take spray paint cans out there and you can spray paint on the Cadillacs. They've been there for like 40 something years. I'm from Texas and I don't know about Cadillac. One part of Texas. Where is this? Oh, I don't know. Panhandle. Oh no, but I don't know. Okay. Texas is huge. It is huge. So it's, I could have missed it somewhere in Texas. That's a great, it's on route 66 I can tell you that much. I couldn't tell you the town. But it's fascinating. And so there, I mean it does. Are we doing here that tourist field trips, spontaneous, spontaneous field trips and so we drove by it and we both were like stop the car. We have to go to Cadillac ranch and start. It's an, and it was amazing and our girls had a great time cause they got to spray paint cars cause who gets to do that? And that's fun. That's neat. Anyway, continue on. I'm sorry, we've got one more. Can you tell you got two Mary's here. So I tried. Okay. And you said I had one more. Okay. You're carrying a planner right now. Give yourself plus one cause you're sitting right here at my kitchen table. But normally I'm often Yvette:             Doing this at a convention and so if they have a planner on them, they get a point. So, okay, let's does a phone count as a planner? Well you've got a phone nearby. I always have my phone. You all near me and I always have my planner on my phone. I can't tell if your planner is on your phone then. Okay, so this is a plus one. You got a plus one plus one. Okay. Yes. Oh my. Okay. So now I need to yes, you add that up too quick and I'm going to give you a scale. We'll find out what you are, our listeners, I hope you'll be doing the same. And then based on your results, we have a couple of closing remarks. Okay.                         So, I have negative four. Oh, okay. Oh, you said Oh you want to meet. Okay. So here's how it goes with the points. So if you are M minus 10 to a minus four. Okay. Really are a married, I am married [inaudible] but you're a low scoring married. Okay. Which means I hear a little bit of Martha too, right? Yeah, yeah. Or it's balanced cause like a minus 10 is the, so you're saying I balanced is what you're really saying. Well, hold on. I want to show you, see if you're a minus three, two a plus three Oh really? A Mary Martha mix. Okay. Very healthy. So you're real close to that. Okay. Yeah. So you have some tendencies. Okay, you're close, but you, you are. Okay. Now if you scored a plus forward to a plus 10 I think you really are a Martha. Oh no.                         Yeah. And that's not what you scored. So like I literally would score minus 10 on this. Okay. Oh and my mother was four plus 10 wow. Okay. Like we are the very opposites. Every everybody saying is a true story here on my little, which is incredible because when we look at our children and how we educate our kids, and I love that you said with your daughter you realized and for fifth grade that she was a Martha. It's very helpful to understand our children's personalities, especially if they differ from our own. And, and that helps us to educate them better at home because if we don't understand them and how they think and how they respond to life, if you have a, if you're a Mary and you have a Martha for each child and you're trying to homeschool them and a Merry world, it will frustrate them.                         But, and also the flippy disciple. And if you, if you're a Martha and you're trying to educate your Mary child, you're making a cry, you're going to make them cry and you're going to fight with them and battle with them. And it's going to be a constant, the battle between the two of you. So what's the answer? How and a new way to celebrate this in what I would say is, first of all, I encourage, if you're a Martha, embrace that and always be a Martha. God has given you gifts and talents. Go change the world and use them. And if you're a Mary, do the same. Embrace your Mary cause God gave you, and maybe you're an impasse, maybe you're feelings driven. And maybe that means life isn't always pristine and it can get messy. Sometimes it does and a lot of drama can follow Mary. Sure. However, if that's how you're designed, embrace Linda:               It and think about who Jesus said would be remembered in eternity at the same time that gospel would be preached. He was referring to Mary's extravagant act of worship. The woman who is again appears to be a broken woman who truly loves him out of the deep need. And so it's like if that's you, then just wear it and love it and let Jesus just be worshiped. Mean. She wiped his feet with her tears and yes, I could cry about right now thinking about that because that moves me so much like I'm trying to imagine if I could see Jesus and how I would so want to fall before he sure did he ever saved me. I mean, I am a broken woman. I am. I have made a lot of mistakes in my life and I've been redeemed. The gospel is good news. It is good news that Jesus saves.                         And so, like Mary just hold onto that and take a ride with that. And you're not going to get this homeschooling all done well, right? You're just not farmed out what you can. As a matter of fact, I have 10 tips for all marries who are listening and we can do that as a bonus time. Okay. But just in closing, for those who you know, need to cut it whichever you are, embrace it. Because Jesus loved Mary and Martha and Lazarus and what great plans he had even in their crisis. Yes. And isn't that assuring that there's always plans, there's God's plans, you be a Lazarus dies and they're still a good plan that Jesus has out of that. So anyway, I just wanted to say that, but homeschooling, I think it's a Martha world. It's heavy and Nat [inaudible] sufficient. And so I had felt over the years, you know, like some that I just didn't measure up.                         I mean, I didn't go to bed feeling very successful all the time. And as a homeschool mom and I had to adjust to my kids to get back to them. My kids were all far more structured than me. Yeah. I was the most free spirit of the family, so I had to step up. I needed to adapt and sometimes I just had to step up and that's what I will share as a couple of quick tips I have for Mary for the married life, and I love that about you because now your children are all grown, they're all married, you've got grandkids, and so I love that. I can look at women like you who have been there especially who have been Ameri and you felt like you were messing it up because we talk about that a lot. We talked about that in the movie.                         We talk about that on the podcast. I just had dinner with a couple of friends the other night and we all were talking about how we just feel like we're just messing it all up. I said, you know, it's so funny because oftentimes people will come to me and asked me questions about homeschooling and I can give them every reason why they should homeschool, but don't ask me how to homeschool because I feel I'm, I'm a Mary and I definitely always feel inadequate. I always feel like I'm messing it up and, and God continues to show me over and over again that he's doing it. Now he's using me and I still, like you said, I still have to be diligent. I can't just throw up my hands and say, Oh well God's going to do everything to be done. But at the same time, God's to fill in the gaps Yvette:             And there are always going to be gaps. But it's so encouraging to me to talk to a mom like you who's been there and now we can see the results of what your children have, have turned out to, you know, they are productive adults who love Jesus and that's what it's all about. Yeah. I still think we could call ourselves a successful homeschool family. And I have one last word. Some people may be listening going, and she's the one that wrote The Mystery of History. And in case that shakes your confidence in me because like you're writing behind the scenes that I'm not an altogether woman. Well, that's because God, to God be the glory. Amen. I ever authored the minister of history, but you know what ins, what drove those words? It was my feelings. SOC like I didn't pick a Martha to write and he picked a Mary.                         That's wrong. Because I think that history handled through some emotion and feeling we better see his hand in it. So anyway, that's where the passion comes from. And so, but it was hard and you can see that and how hard it was for me to do this. God, were you sure? Yes. He was like, I got this. You know, because for what? It's about him, right? I didn't invent these stories. They're nice stories and say any way he was able to use something that the world might call weak, right? Oh, to shine on him. But he has used you in an amazing way. And we were just talking about this at dinner tonight. And I was saying the thing I love most about the ministry of history is that it's easy for me as a homeschool mom to be able to use that curriculum because really I feel like I'm just kind of talking through it and having a conversation with my kids about it instead of it being so rigid textbook because I'm a Mary, I am not a rigid textbook kind of girl.                         Drives me nuts. And for some, you know, for the Martha's out there, they love that. And that works for them though the ministry of history is shine it. Yes, there's plenty of structure in it and there are, I mean, you can take it in several different directions as far as how deep you want to go with it. But for me it's great because I can see your emotion in it. I can see you didn't just take the facts and write them on a page. You, you brought meaning and feeling into it. Yes. And I love that about it. So, and it's all from a Biblical perspective, which that's what it's all about for us. So really quickly let me ask you, you've got the quiz is this, we do of course show notes that people can refer to on the podcast. Do you have that quiz handy that I can, we can send to people?                         Well, the best way probably did get that. It would be if your listeners wanted to get hold of the workshop, I had this workshop recorded in full and then they can get a little bit more and the quizzes are part of that and they can stop and start and take that. So yes, we can make sure that you're listing okay. To special coupon code. We'll put that in the notes. Okay. Okay. So we'll put a coupon code in the notes and give them access to that and then you can give them the final results of whether they're married or Martha or a Mary Martha. Yes. That scale will be a part of that is great. We are going to stop with the podcast, but for our backstage pass members, we're going to continue on. And you're going to talk about 10 tips. 10 quick tips for those of us who are married Mary homeschool mom doesn't need to hear this because she already knows what she's doing. She's a pretty natural at this. This is the struggle in Mary and there just a few little things I did. I mean these aren't like, this isn't rocket science. You just a few little [inaudible].                         Okay, so we'll continue on with that for backstage pass members. If you're not a backstage pass member yet, definitely go on the schoolhouse rock website, go to backstage pass member and then you can learn more about what that is, and you have access to all kinds of amazing videos and content and stuff. Linda:               And please subscribe to my website too - TheMysteryofHistory.com. Yvette:             And send Linda really kind emails and tell her how wonderful she has because I know that “Marys” need to hear those things. “Marys” have feelings and sometimes I think people I know we're way over time, but that's okay. I know sometimes people, they'll see your name on a book. You know, this lady Linda Lacour Hobar wrote The Mystery of History and, and you become a, almost a character to them instead of a real person.                         And it's been so neat to just get to know you over the last couple of days and though we've met before, but being in someone's home is completely different. And so, you know, we've, we've lived with you for the last couple of days. I've gotten to know your girls and that's a life changer for me because it's all about those. They are, when I get to meet the kids, that's the best class I write for them. Yep. Your girls are precious. Well and they love you and they were excited to hear your voice and attach me to the life. Yes, yes. Cause we listened to your audio. But thank you for what you are doing for the homeschool community and for all that God is doing through you. It's all for his glory. So thank you backstage. Mass members continue on with the video. It will be available in backstage past and we'll talk about 10 tips for us marries. And in the meantime, you guys have a great week. Thank you for listening today and we will see you back here next week. Bye.

“Anxiety in teens is higher than it's ever been. Because these kids are having to perform at a standard that is a generalized standard that they don't necessarily fit into and it does make sense because when we remove God's design and plan, we end up with these things like depression. Because the Bible tells us that the joy of the Lord is my strength. And so when I'm sent into a place every day where, well, God is there but where I'm not allowed to be taught about God or speak of God or see God or do things God's way, then it's not going to be a joy-filled place. When you remove the Lord from the school, you're also removing joy and strength.” – Aby Rinella If you didn't already listen to the first part of this conversation, listen to it here.   Aby Rinella is back with me today and we are talking about the benefits of homeschooling. We talked before about “The Why of Homeschooling” and today we’re building on some of those ideas. We recorded that episode several months ago, but this is the second part of that conversation about the many, many benefits of being able to keep our kids at home and disciple them. The Bible passage that we have parked on for this episode is Matthew 6:31-33, but really focusing on verse 33. But it starts out, "Therefore, do not be anxious, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' for the Gentiles seek after these things, and your Heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."   Several months ago, Aby and Yvette had a great conversation in which they talked about the "Why of Homeschooling" and it's possibly our most popular episode. Aby and Yvette did another two episodes with Karen DeBeus on "The Who, Why, and How of Homeschooling", which have also been a beloved resource for homeschool families.   "I think in the beginning, I would look at other kids who parents would talk about the struggles that they had with their children but also the blessings of it too. But I thought, well... Homeschooling's going to be different in our house. It's going to run smoothly. And as I had this fairytale in my mind of what it was going to look like, we were going to just have this perfectly scheduled-out day. My children were going to just sit so compliantly in their desks and they were going to just do the work that I asked them to do. And they were going to learn everything the first time and they were not going to argue with me. I mean, I had this idea of how it was going to unfold and then I started homeschooling!"     You can watch this full interview on the Schoolhouse Rocked Backstage Pass site. “God’s way is best. God has a best design. When God designed us to be parents and he laid out in his word as to what it means to be parents, he gave us directions to go with that, that would guide us to be the best parents we can be. He does that with everything. How can you best manage money? How can you best be married? How can you best even run a business and a government? It’s everything that we need for life and godliness is in his word. And so with that is also how can we best raise our children? And the Bible is very clear that to best raise our children to serve and honor and worship him is to do it according to his word in everything that we do all day long.” – Aby Rinella   Join Aby Rinella and Yvette Hampton in this two-part series, as they talk about the benefits of homeschooling.   Several months ago, Aby and Yvette had a great conversation in which they talked about the "Why of Homeschooling" and it's possibly our most popular episode. Aby and Yvette did another two episodes with Karen DeBeus on "The Who, Why, and How of Homeschooling", which have also been a beloved resource for homeschool families.   On this one we want to take that a little bit further and we want to talk about the blessings and the benefits of homeschooling. So once people know and understand what their why is, we want to talk about the great joy and blessings that come from it. And the verse that Aby and I have been talking about a lot is Matthew 6:33, and for our family this has become a verse that has been very instrumental to us in this amazing journey that God has had us on with filming the documentary, and even just with life, with homeschooling, with trying to figure out this whole parenting thing. And so I'm going to read this verse to you again. Many of you already know it, but we're going to start out with it.   Matthew 6:31-33 "Therefore, do not be anxious saying, what shall we eat or what shall we drink or what shall we wear, for the Gentiles seek after all these things and your heavenly father knows that you need them all. “You talked about math. Where do these invisible laws of mathematics come from and why don't they randomly change? They come from the mind of God, and they don't change because God doesn't change. Laws of nature. The whole reason we can do science to begin with is we have laws of nature that are, they're not tangible, but they don't change. They're consistent every time and that's why you can do an experiment today and tomorrow and get the same results if you do it the same way. Well that's only possible because God made not only the tangible world, but the non-tangible world. He made the laws of nature. He holds them together so they don't randomly change. They reflect Him. And so the only reason you can do science to begin with is because God is real and the Bible's true. And you can point out all of that when you're teaching it from a Biblical perspective.” – Bryan Osborne, Answers in Genesis   Bryan Osborne is a well-respected speaker, author, and curriculum specialist for Answers in Genesis. Matthew 4:19 says, “Come and follow me and I will make you fishers of men.” "He asked the men to drop their nets and walk away from everything that they knew, everything comfortable, everything that they kind of had figured out. And he said, 'Let it all go. Leave it all behind, and follow me into the unknown. But know that I’m with you.'" - Aby Rinella   We couldn’t be more excited to announce that WE ARE DONE FILMING!! On June 8, we ventured off on a 10 day trip across the country to meet up with Heidi St. John, her family, and their team at the Firmly Planted Homeschool Resource Center in Vancouver, Washington. Our time there was incredibly successful as we finished filming the rest of Schoolhouse Rocked with Heidi and her crew. Though we had already filmed the majority of the interviews for the movie, we still needed to film a narrative that would weave throughout the film. Together, Heidi and I were able to tell that story and it couldn’t have gone better. Don't miss this important production update. Yvette and Brooklyn Hampton discuss the plans for finishing the film.  PLEASE PARTNER WITH US TO FINISH PRODUCTION ONSCHOOLHOUSE ROCKED: THE HOMESCHOOL REVOLUTION!   Dear Friends and Family, Thank you for your amazing support, encouragement, and prayers over the past several weeks. God is doing BIG things and we are so excited to share them with you. We asked you to pray for the Lord to guide us, and He has! We are SO excited to tell you that in a few weeks, we are driving west from Georgia to Washington to complete the filming of Schoolhouse Rocked with Heidi St. John! The remainder of what needs to be filmed to complete the movie is the narrative portion. We have interviewed several fantastic homeschool experts and families, but in order for Schoolhouse Rocked to be an entertaining and compelling film, there must be an engaging and relatable storyline to tie all the interviews together. That’s where Heidi comes in. We will join Heidi at the Firmly Planted Homeschool Resource Center in Vancouver, Washington to talk about the ups and downs, benefits and blessings, challenges and victories of homeschooling. For those of you who are not familiar with Heidi, she is a homeschool mom of 7 and an outspoken advocate for truth. She is dedicated to changing culture through the faithful application of God’s Word. She is a popular speaker and author, and host of the Heidi St. John podcast. You will be BLESSED by her important part in Schoolhouse Rocked! BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP!  As you can imagine, this cross-country journey and filming in Washington is going to be quite costly. God has been faithful to provide for production up until now, through people like yourself, as well as a few awesome sponsors, and we know He will continue to do so. In order to complete filming with Heidi, we need to raise approximately $30k, in the next few weeks, for crew, travel, equipment, and other costs. It’s a big number, we know. But, we also know that our God is really big and that where He guides, He ALWAYS provides! Our trip is planned, our family is packed up, and we are going! Will you help us get there? Here’s how YOU can help –    PRAY~ God hears our prayers and is faithful and able to answer. We have continuously seen Him at work throughout this important project.  DONATE~ Make a tax-deductible donation of any amount. SHARE~ Share this message with friends and family who believe in the importance of homeschooling. We are thankful for you, the homeschool community, who continue to walk this journey with us through prayer, encouragement, and financial support. We are in this together and can’t wait to update you on God’s amazing provision! State organizations PROMOTE homeschooling, PROVIDE valuable resources to help you homeschool successfully, and PROTECT your right to educate you children. These organizations are the first line of defense in monitoring state laws which would affect your family, then when action is needed, they rally their members and coordinate with other organizations to influence policy. We encourage every homeschool family to join their state homeschool organization (and HSLDA). Many people fought for years to gain the freedom to home educate and if we are not diligent we can quickly lose that freedom. Rebecca Kocsis works for CHEA (Christian Home Educators Association of California), an organization that holds a special place in Yvette's heart. On this episode you'll hear why Yvette loves CHEA and get to know more about what state homeschool organizations are doing for you.
