See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Click below https://www.patreon.com/perfecthealth Learn more: https://perfecthealthlesson.com/ Episode Summary:In this episode of The New Science of Physical Health, host Shane Stubbs dives deep into the science of fat loss, VO₂ max, and hypoxic exercise. Discover how shedding excess fat impacts not only aesthetics but also overall well-being by boosting energy, reducing chronic disease risk, and improving physical performance. Shane also explains the critical role of mitochondria in fat metabolism and shares actionable strategies for tracking key health metrics that can enhance your heart health and longevity. Why Fat Loss Matters Fat loss isn't just about looking better—it's about feeling better, improving energy levels, reducing joint pain, and lowering the risk of chronic diseases. Shane explains the molecular process of fat loss, focusing on how triglycerides are broken down and used for energy in the mitochondria. The Science of Fat Loss Hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) triggers the breakdown of triglycerides into glycerol and fatty acids. These fatty acids undergo beta-oxidation in the mitochondria, producing ATP, water, and carbon dioxide. The importance of creating a caloric deficit and how it facilitates fat loss is discussed in detail. Raising Your VO₂ Max VO₂ max is a critical fitness metric, indicating how much oxygen your body can utilize during intense exercise. Shane shares strategies to improve your VO₂ max through interval training and aerobic exercises, emphasizing the importance of consistency. Learn why individuals with high VO₂ max levels tend to live longer and have healthier cardiovascular systems. Tracking Blood Biomarkers Shane highlights six key blood biomarkers you should monitor, including: Proactively tracking these markers helps detect early signs of heart disease and diabetes, allowing for timely intervention. Coronary Calcium Score Testing By age 40, Shane recommends getting a Coronary Calcium Score test—a non-invasive scan that measures plaque buildup in your coronary arteries. Early detection can lead to life-saving interventions, and Shane explains why this test is a must for proactive heart health. Addressing Insulin Resistance and Weight Challenges Shane discusses the link between insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and weight gain. He encourages listeners to explore pharmacological options such as GLP-1 agonists in consultation with a healthcare professional for managing excess weight and improving metabolic health. The Power of Lifelong Learning Staying informed is key to long-term health. Shane advises seeking evidence-based information from reputable sources and staying curious about new developments in health science. Hypoxic Exercise – The Oxygen Deficit Advantage Shane explains the concept of hypoxic training, which involves exercising in a low-oxygen environment to trigger unique physiological adaptations. Benefits include increased red blood cell production, enhanced mitochondrial efficiency, improved cardiovascular health, and greater fat oxidation. Learn about the science of hypoxia-induced metabolic adaptations and how they can boost fat loss and fitness If you enjoyed this episode and want to unlock more exclusive content, visit our Patreon link in the show notes or head to PerfectHealthLesson.com. Intro: Podcast-jumppa Pontuksen kuuluminen: hyperbolaa, hyperkytkeytymistä, hyperkiihtymistä eli syksy on tullut. Tiistaina pääministeri Petteri Orpo esittelemä ”Me puhumme teoin” -kampanjan on yksi hallituksen 23:sta yhdenvertaisuustoimenpiteestä. Perussuomalaiset ilmoittivat, etteivät osallistu kampanjaan. "Perussuomalaiset vetivät maton rasisminvastaisen kampanjan lanseeranneen pääministerin alta", kirjoitti Ylen politiikan toimittaja Matti Koivisto. Kansansuosikki Kari Hotakaisen uuden “Pirkka-kirjan” eli tuoreen Helmi-romaanin lanseeraus on aiheuttanut närää. Onko kirjan myyminen yksinoikeudella Keskon kautta eli käytännössä superemarketeissa tämä uusi tapa tuoda kirjallisuus suuren yleisön saataville vai vaarantaako se perinteisten kirjakauppojen elinvoimaisuuden? Brittirock-yhtye Oasis palaa keikkalavoille 16 vuoden tauon jälkeen. Mikä saa riitaisat Gallagherin veljekset palaamaan yhteen?
Suoraa puhetta johtaa Maria Pettersson. Keskustelijoina ovat Anu Koivunen, Juha Itkonen ja Mika Panzar. Anu Koivunen ottaa käsittelyyn uhanalaisten raakkujen pelastustyöt Suomussalmen Hukkajoella. Tänään (28.8.) uutisoitiin, että Stora Enso epäilee toista sääntörikkomusta raakkupurolla Kainuussa ja hakkuut siellä on lopetettu. Anun mielestä nyt olisi aika perata suomalainen suojelupolitiikka. Mitä se oikeasti on kaiken kauniin puheen taustalla? Ketä tästä kaikesta pitäisi syyttää? Juha Itkosen aiheena on HSL:n "Ihan lipun laitonta" -kampanja, jolla pyritään nostamaan tietoisuutta siitä, että väärennetty lippu on rikos. HSL palkkasi nuorten tuntemia somevaikuttajia kampanjaan.

We're back with this mini series of Talent Showcase episodes focused on people in marketing, communications, PR, and allied fields who're looking for their next opportunity. You'll hear their stories, successes, and how they can help their next employer or client. Today, I'm joined by Paula Lowe (https://www.linkedin.com/in/paulajlowe/). Paula is the founder and principal of The PR Table, a marketing communications consulting firm, where all of marketing has a seat at the table. Although Paula's expertise is in media relations and communication strategy, her experience encompasses all aspects of marketing communications, from email marketing, content development, and social media to website creation and maintenance. Paula has more than 15 years experience, having worked with large multinational corporate entities and small startup ventures within a wide range of industries, including technology, Financial Services, Health Care and Medical, Health IT, Supply Chain, Non profits, and Supply Chain and Logistics. Transcript Mark Reed-Edwards: Paula, it's good to have you on the show. Welcome. Paula Lowe: It's great to be here, Mark. Thank you. Mark Reed-Edwards: So, I just told your life story, but can you tell me more about yourself beyond what I just shared, your background and career path? Paula Lowe: Sure. It's always fun to sort of remember the story. I actually went to school in Boston and graduated with an associate degree in hospitality management. I quickly got a job at the Ritz Carlton in a supervisory role, but realized that it was not going to afford me the opportunity to complete my degree, which was very important back then. So I transferred and got a job as an admin assistant at an environmental engineering firm. And about a year in, I transferred from the facilities department to the corporate communications department. And that was it. I fell in love with corpcomm. I began to realize that my natural storytelling and relatability with people was something I could leverage in a career that I would find satisfying and challenging. So I got in touch then with our PR consultant that was brought in. My boss said, "I'm going to have you work with our PR consultant, help tell some stories. I think you'd be good at it." I said, "Great." And that was it. From there, I left the environmental engineering firm and I joined Lois Paul Partners back up in Lexington. I've had my career in public relations ever since. Mark Reed-Edwards: So what is one of your most important career accomplishments, do you think? Paula Lowe: I have to say, working for Hebrew Senior Life in Boston, which is a non profit. They have a hospital license for Hebrew Rehab Center. And they have eight or nine senior housing locations throughout Greater Boston. And I was there at the onset and throughout COVID. And that was a very, very challenging, stressful, difficult time. But it was also a really great learning opportunity because HSL is a leader in senior care. And the then- CEO, he's since retired, but he was a real inspiration to see how he handled things and we were able to bring them through that crisis really successfully. Mark Reed-Edwards: So what do you think you can offer your next employer or client? Paula Lowe: I think that the years of experience I have have led me to be, although I am a PR specialist, if you will, my forte is media relations and analyst relations, securing those relationships, but you know, there's a breadth of services and strategy that I can bring to my clients, so relationship building, persistence. One of the things I found as a PR person is that we have to be persistent. And if a client or I want a relationship with a particular member of the media, I will make it happen. It just might take some time and some creativity. I really find a lot of inspiration in trying to find different ways to do things. I'm not a believer in "this is the way we've always done it so this is the way we should continue to do it." So if my clients are open to new ways of looking at things. I bring a lot of creativity and ideas that we can implement. And of course, strategy. I've done that for most of my career. Nothing is done in a bubble. There's always a strategic reason and business objective we're trying to achieve. Mark Reed-Edwards: I've never really done PR. I've been in areas around PR and talked to the press on occasion. But persistence is a quality for most of the people I know in PR who are great at their jobs. Because they build relationships over years. And you have to be persistent to do that. Paula Lowe: Absolutely. And it's a fine line. Some of the relationships I built early on in my career, I'm still friends with those reporters and editors. And I think one of the things that sets me apart, and maybe even it's a generational thing at this point too, but I never went to a reporter or editor with a pitch that I had to read off a sheet. I made sure I understood it. I made sure I understood the business value of what we were offering, and if they didn't accept it, I always asked why. I said I know that time is tight, but what am I missing here? Because I am trying to be a good resource. I do my research. If I'm missing, I need to know what I'm missing and why. And sometimes they would tell me, sometimes they wouldn't, but often they'd say, "You know, that's a great question. Nobody asks that. It's not totally off the mark. It's the timing or it's this." And that's valuable information to take back to a client as well. Why the pitches aren't working or why the client thinks it's a great story, but maybe the media doesn't. And then we find a different way to go back to that person with what they can use. Mark Reed-Edwards: Yeah, and finding out their editorial calendar and just partnering up with them over the course of months or even years so that you can align with what the reporter's needs are and those reporters are stretched thinner than ever now. Paula Lowe: Oh, gosh, for sure. The landscape has changed significantly and it's very challenging. But you can still do it. I'm doing it right now for a client. I'm having a lot of fun. It's a really unique auto industry training software company that I'm working with and it's a lot of fun and I'm making those relationships on their behalf and it's just been great because you can still do that. It just takes a little longer. Mark Reed-Edwards: Yeah. And how do you---I'll ask one last question. How do you work with your client to set their expectations that they're not going to be in the Wall Street Journal or the New York Times next week. Paula Lowe: Isn't that the age old question? Mark Reed-Edwards: Yeah. B You know, it's just a matter of being very honest and direct and saying, " When you have that story I'm happy to tell it, but you're not there right now, or you know, it's gonna take some time to secure those relationships and make those connections." One of the challenges, too, is the way people move around. Many of the people I worked with just a few short years ago are now in different roles. Still within the media landscape, but different roles. It might mean that I need to get reconnected or connected with someone new. And those things do take time. So I just sort of set the expectation up front and let them know that there are certain criteria that you have to meet to get into a big publication like that, or even Forbes, Fortune, those kinds of publications, and those take time. They're not an overnight thing. Mark Reed-Edwards: Well, Paula, you've got a great story to tell for yourself, and thanks for joining me. I hope this podcast helps you find your next great gig. Paula Lowe: Thank you, Mark. I appreciate being here. Mark Reed-Edwards: Well, that's it for this mini series. Together, we've met some extraordinary people. Ben Bradshaw, Jason Rasmussen, Gem Passant, Chuck Tanowitz, Kelley Lynn Kassa, and today's guest, Paula Lowe. I hope we helped tell their stories and that they have nothing but good fortune to come. As for what's coming next for this podcast, stay tuned. We have one of the world's leading Amazon experts and the guest for the most popular episode of Confessions of a Marketer while we were away. That's Robin Johnson. She'll be with us next time, and we'll see you then.

Download the diagram above, click here. Tracy's Question: Episode 052 – What Biest Ratio is Best for Menopause? This is such helpful information. I have often wondered who 80:20 is good for and who 50:50 is good for. One thing I'm still confused by is the estrogen weight gain component. You said that estrogen (as well as menopause in general) could be the cause of her weight gain. I can relate. I was very thin my whole life, now 53 and about 30 lbs overweight. But you also said she might benefit from getting her estrogen balanced, and she was not using enough. If too low a dose made her gain weight, won't an increased dose cause more weight gain? I have heard other podcasts and read articles that in menopause, we gain weight because our estrogen falls. Estrogen seems to be blamed for weight gain, whether it's high or low. Can you help clarify? There's something I'm not understanding. Thank you! Tracy Short Answer: Often estrogen has been the scapegoat for weight gain. I'm sure you have heard too much causes weight gain. Too little can pack on the pounds. It can be pretty confusing. So which is it? Is too much estrogen causing my pants to become uncomfortably tight? Or is it too little estrogen that has given me the gut I never had? Well, it's not that simple. Estrogen levels do have a hand in weight gain and weight loss. But it is not the only variable. It really is the combination of the balance of estrogen with other hormones in your body. To name a few main players, progesterone, insulin, and cortisol, as well as enzymes, lipoprotein lipase (LPL), and hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL). Okay, I know that sounds vague and doesn't answer the question. Let's back up a bit and look at what women are saying about estrogen. As soon as menopause hits, women complain that they are instantly 15-30 lbs heavier. Not because of diet or lifestyle. It's like menopause adds an unwanted 15-30 lbs overnight. Then some women are on hormone replacement therapy, taking estrogen, and are horrified because the HRT caused them to gain 10 lbs in a month. So what is it? Did the lack of estrogen in menopause cause that 20 lb weight gain? Or did that hormone replacement estrogen create rolls that were never there? Well, actually, both are true. Before you throw out your jeans in favor of high-waisted yoga pants, let's learn about the other players in weight gain. Progesterone will buffer estrogen. Estrogen does like to grow things'. That is why in puberty, you grow breasts and hips. Progesterone helps to balance some of the growth' that estrogen can cause. That is why in perimenopause, when the progesterone drops and the estrogen is running the show, the weight gain begins. That is also why when a woman starts estrogen therapy for menopause but not enough progesterone, there is weight gain. Cortiso
We are proud to welcome our first helicopter pilot, "GT" this week: Capt. Wayne Tunick USN (ret) author of the book "American Quest" The book is a fun read and traces the career of a young man who had never considered the military as he serves his country and his fellow man. GT had a successful career as a Navy Helicopter pilot who learned early on the seriousness of aviation in a crash that could have easily cost him his life and it changed the way he approached flying for the rest of his career. And, while everyone couldn't experience exactly what he did, GT tells us how he demanded exacting standards of his fellow aviators so they could be ready to meet any challenge they faced - expectedly or unexpectedly in the airplane. GT's experiences range from incredible to terrifying - and how he was fortunate enough to be able to learn from his experience and pass that on to other pilots throughout his career - including two tours as a Squadron Commander. Over the years GT came up with 18 Rules to live by. They are republished here: COMMANDING OFFICER, HSL-44 AIRCREW POLICY THIS IS A LIFE AND DEATH BUSINESS. DON'T DIE BECAUSE YOU WERE STUPID. Summary Data is one of the core ingredients for machine learning, but the format in which it is understandable to humans is not a useful representation for models. Embedding vectors are a way to structure data in a way that is native to how models interpret and manipulate information. In this episode Frank Liu shares how the Towhee library simplifies the work of translating your unstructured data assets (e.g. images, audio, video, etc.) into embeddings that you can use efficiently for machine learning, and how it fits into your workflow for model development. Announcements Hello and welcome to the Machine Learning Podcast, the podcast about machine learning and how to bring it from idea to delivery. Building good ML models is hard, but testing them properly is even harder. At Deepchecks, they built an open-source testing framework that follows best practices, ensuring that your models behave as expected. Get started quickly using their built-in library of checks for testing and validating your model’s behavior and performance, and extend it to meet your specific needs as your model evolves. Accelerate your machine learning projects by building trust in your models and automating the testing that you used to do manually. Go to themachinelearningpodcast.com/deepchecks today to get started! Your host is Tobias Macey and today I’m interviewing Frank Liu about how to use vector embeddings in your ML projects and how Towhee can reduce the effort involved Interview Introduction How did you get involved in machine learning? Can you describe what Towhee is and the story behind it? What is the problem that Towhee is aimed at solving? What are the elements of generating vector embeddings that pose the greatest challenge or require the most effort? Once you have an embedding, what are some of the ways that it might be used in a machine learning project? Are there any design considerations that need to be addressed in the form that an embedding takes and how it impacts the resultant model that relies on it? (whether for training or inference) Can you describe how the Towhee framework is implemented? What are some of the interesting engineering challenges that needed to be addressed? How have the design/goals/scope of the project shifted since it began? What is the workflow for someone using Towhee in the context of an ML project? What are some of the types optimizations that you have incorporated into Towhee? What are some of the scaling considerations that users need to be aware of as they increase the volume or complexity of data that they are processing? What are some of the ways that using Towhee impacts the way a data scientist or ML engineer approach the design development of their model code? What are the interfaces available for integrating with and extending Towhee? What are the most interesting, innovative, or unexpected ways that you have seen Towhee used? What are the most interesting, unexpected, or challenging lessons that you have learned while working on Towhee? When is Towhee the wrong choice? What do you have planned for the future of Towhee? Contact Info LinkedIn fzliu on GitHub Website @frankzliu on Twitter Parting Question From your perspective, what is the biggest barrier to adoption of machine learning today? HT1268 - Nature's Green is Mostly Yellow Back in my film days, I carried a full complement of colored filters. I would often use a green filter to lighten leaves and other vegetation. However, I've learned in Lightroom that green has a lot of yellow in it. In fact, most vegetation has more yellow in it that green. The targeted HSL sliders demonstrate this quite convincingly.
With so many of you designers working in various platforms and mediums, RGB or HSL color values are not the only way to share color information anymore. Ross Video has added support for Hex Values to the color picker and to Visual Logic. Use your favorite method of representing color values, now. Adam Alexander is a consummate storyteller thanks to forty years as a successful and award-winning film and television producer. In this episode, Adam, who has collected seeds from ethnic markets during his extensive travels, presents a compelling need for genetic diversification in all plants as we face climate change and disappearing species in the pursuit of uniform crops. His films have included documentaries about little-known cultures, (A Year in Tibet), popular food series, (Return to Tuscany, The Urban Chef) and gardening programmes, (A Year at Kew, A Garden for Eden). He has won awards for culturally important ethnographic series including, Hughesovka, Eutopia, Unholy Land and Russian Wonderland. He has appeared on CNN's Going Green, BBC's Gardeners' World and The Great British Food Revival and recently on Radio New Zealand's Nine to Noon show. He has written for The Organic Way, The Sustainable Food Trust, The Cottage Garden Society. He is currently working with The Museum of Wales, St. Fagans, reviving Welsh heritage vegetables and has provided heirloom Welsh vegetable seed to culturally important gardens including Aberglassney in West Wales. His latest project is to encourage people to reconnect with their local food culture by reviving local varieties held by the HSL and also heirlooms he has discovered in the UK. These are being grown by market gardeners and re-introduced to communities through farmers markets, local shops and veg-box schemes. Local growers are also being provided with seed to grow out and bulk up supply for commercial use. He is in demand as a consultant and advisor to private gardens and institutions wanting to showcase British heritage crops. His book The Adventures of a Seed Detective – Meetings with remarkable vegetables; from wild parent to cultivated offspring will be published in 2022 Useful Linktheseeddetective.co.uk Twitter: @vegoutwithadamwww.veggingoutwithadam.comThe Indiana Jones of Vegetables- Chelsea Green Books Meet the Seed Detective- CNNRajasthan- A Seedy Story To learn more about plants & your health from Colleen at LabAroma check out this informative PDF https://mailchi.mp/2fe0e426b244/osw1lg2dkhDisclaimer: The information presented in this podcast is for educational purposes only and is not intended to replace professional medical advice. Len Fishman has worn many hats—Director of the Gerontology Institute at UMass Boston, CEO of New England's largest non-profit senior living provider, and CEO/President of LeadingAge. Listen to his reflections on decades of experience in long-term services and support, and predictions on future challenges and opportunities. About Len Len Fishman served as director of the Gerontology Institute at UMass Boston until his retirement in 2021. The Institute is the research, policy, and public service arm of UMass Boston's gerontology program, one of the oldest and largest aging studies programs in the world. Its main areas of focus are health and health care, long-term services and support, economic security, productive aging, and demography—with a special emphasis on low-income and minority older adults. From 2000 to 2012, Len was CEO of Hebrew SeniorLife, New England's largest non-profit provider of senior housing and health care. During his tenure, HSL became an affiliate of Harvard Medical School, serving as the school's clinical research and academic teaching site in geriatrics. Before joining HSL, Len was president of Leading Age, in Washington D.C., which represents 6,000 non-profit senior housing and health care providers, serving over two million seniors in the U.S. and Canada. Key Takeaways One of the big societal changes in aging is people living longer.Within a little over 100 years, we have increased the human lifespan by over 50%. Most of the institutions that govern our lives were created when the human lifespan was much shorter. Now, however, people expect to experience another chapter in their lives. Home care has changed dramatically over the last 20 years, and much more is now being spent on home and community-based services and adult day care. Two thirds of the Medicaid budget is allocated to home and community-based services, up from one third. As a result, nursing home reimbursement has stagnated, and the state of the industry is dire. Occupancy is at historically low levels. Co-housing has not gained traction in the U.S., but there is a trend towards multigenerational housing.
Lou Woolf is President and CEO of Hebrew SeniorLife (HSL), an integrated, eight-site system of health care, housing, research, and teaching that is committed to redefining the experience of aging, and directly serves more than 3,000 Greater Boston seniors on a daily basis. Molly Wylie, doctoral student at UMass Boston, interviews Lou about his career path from acute care and learns why HSL is dedicated to applied research.
It is July 2020 and it is feeling like a “lost year” already. I've felt somewhat aimless at times, drifting about. The phrase “lost year” reminded me of John Lennon's “Lost Weekend”, actually an 18-month period. During this time he drifted a bit and wasn't really rooted anywhere. He bounced around a variety of recording studios and had lots of collaborations.Yet John was incredibly creative during this period. He finished 3 full albums and charted his first #1 US hit as a solo artist. That got me thinking. What can I learn from John's “Lost Weekend”? Is there something I can apply to my photography?I explore this idea in today's podcast. Given the current world situation, in-person collaborations aren't really feasible. However, experimenting in post-processing certainly is. I share my story of how I shook up my workflow to spark some creativity. Here are three ideas to shake up your post-processing:Use a different editing tool. Start your workflow in a place that's not typical for you. Perhaps edit an entire batch of photos using your least-used editing tool. Starting in a new place will lead you down a different path.Explore the corners of the editing tools you own. Dig deeper into the editing tool you use most. Look at filters, effects, or sliders you don't typically use. Try them out.Push your tried and true sliders in a different direction. Most of us have a few favorite sliders and filters. Push the sliders in the opposite direction than you normally do. For example, selectively desaturate colors in a HSL tool or go negative with clarity and sharpness. It is OK if you fumble around a bit. It is also OK if the photos you produce are ones you never want to share. The goal of these ideas is to make discoveries, learn, and spark creativity.
