Today, Hunter spoke with former Public Defender and current Criminal Defense Lawyer Amy Parker about a shocking wrongful conviction case. Normally, Public Defenders find themselves working in opposition of Child Protective Services workers. So when a former CPS worker reached out to Amy, admit that an innocent man was incarcerated, Amy knew there was a serious injustice happening. Through her work, she was able to exonerate Mr. Ezquiel Apolo-Albino and stop his deportation, but how did he end up wrongfully convicted for molesting his children? Based on Amy's tireless work, it appears we know the answer. Prosecutors are pushing to try a 15-year-old boy as an adult after he was accused of murdering his parents and three siblings in their Fall City mansion earlier this week. If his case remains in juvenile court, the unidentified teen could be released by age 25, but in adult court, he faces the possibility of life in prison. The horrific incident unfolded on Monday when deputies responded to a 911 call around 5 a.m. at the family's $2 million home on Lake Alice Road. Inside, they discovered the bodies of Mark Humiston, 43, his wife Sarah Humiston, 42, and three of their children, ages 7, 9, and 13. All had suffered fatal gunshot wounds. An 11-year-old daughter survived despite being shot in the hand and neck; she managed to escape through a window and alert neighbors. According to charging documents obtained by local media, the teenage suspect allegedly plotted to stage the massacre as a murder-suicide carried out by his 13-year-old brother, whom he also killed. Investigators claim he attempted to make it appear as though his brother had committed the rampage after being caught watching inappropriate content online. Detectives allege the teen placed a pistol in his deceased brother's hand to support the staged scenario. The surviving sister told authorities that her older brother used their father's handgun to kill their family members. She recounted waking to gunshots and witnessing her brother shoot her siblings before turning the weapon on her. Prosecutors revealed that the teen had recently faced academic troubles, failing tests at school and getting into significant disciplinary issues. Defense attorney Amy Parker described her client as a caring individual with no prior criminal history, emphasizing his interests in mountain biking and fishing. "Multiple people in the community have reached out to us who know our client, and they have attested to his good character," Parker said during a court hearing on Friday. The teen has been charged with five counts of first-degree aggravated murder and one count of first-degree murder. He is currently detained at the Clark Child and Family Justice Center in Seattle. King County prosecutors argued that the severity of the crimes warrants moving the case to adult court, where the penalties are more severe. A judge is expected to decide on January 8, 2025, whether the teen will be tried as an adult. If convicted in juvenile court, he can only be held until he is 25 years old. The community and legal observers await the decision, which will significantly impact the length of his potential sentence. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? About Amy Amy and her husband, Brad, have been married for 24 years and have 4 children. Their youngest child, Grant, who is now 16, has tuberous sclerosis, a rare genetic condition that affects the major organs of the body. They have “tubers” growing on or in them, which often causes significant issues for the person. These “tubers” are benign tumors. Grant was diagnosed at 13 months old after he went through tests and scans due to seizures beginning at 12 months old. He has significant developmental delays due to the type of seizures he had as a baby. However, he is not physically delayed, and loves to play adaptive sports and enjoys music and singing. Her husband, Brad, is a full-time pastor, and they love ministering to others in our church and community. They have been at their current church for 19 years. She is a nurse and began that career later in life. Grant is a joy to their family, and they are grateful to be chosen to be his parents. They are thankful for all the ways the Lord has used this journey to teach them so many truths about Himself, and their verse for Grant has been Ephesians 3:20-21. God has done and continues to do, so much more than they could ask or imagine through throughout this special-needs journey. If you have kids and you've tried reading the Bible to them, you might know where this is going. Getting our kids to not just read the Bible, but to actually enjoy God's story and message is not easy. Trying to instill the message of a Bible story in their hearts whilst tucking them into bed can reap the exact opposite outcome of our intentions. Overtired kids + frustrated parent = not what we intended. Let this episode encourage you: you are not alone. In this episode, Josh and Christi talk with best-selling authors Amy Parker and Mike Nawrocki about their new Bible storybook, The Bible for Me: Bible Stories & Prayers. The four of them talk about how to make God's story relevant to your child's life and ways they've implemented daily prayers and Bible reading into their family rhythms. This week Mike interviews new podcast co-host and author Sarah Humphrey. Sarah recently released Salmon Says Devotional: 100 Days of Wisdom from the World's Wisest King co-written with Amy Parker If we could give our tweens one tool to mold them into strong, faithful adults, what would it be? The wisdom of the Bible. Thankfully, this wisdom is easily accessible in the book of Proverbs, written by King Solomon, the wisest man to ever live. Solomon Says Devotional: 100 Days of Wisdom from the World's Wisest King by Amy Parker and Sarah Humphrey offers growing, impressionable minds one hundred devotions based on priceless wisdom that is straight from King Solomon himself. This devotional: is written for children ages 8 to 12. begins with a passage from Proverbs and provides a practical and culturally relevant perspective. offers engaging examples that help readers see how King Solomon's ancient wisdom applies to today's world. provides short prayers and simple activities so readers can apply the teachings to their own lives. This resource is perfect for: birthdays, holiday gift giving or as an addition to your home library parents and children to read together Sunday school discussions and small group activities creating meaningful conversations about the wisdom of the Bible By offering the Proverbs in an engaging form and by showing practical ways to apply them, Solomon Says Devotional invites kids to see how ancient wisdom is still helpful, intriguing, and essential in their modern world. Sarah Humphrey is a wife and homeschool mom to three kids while also working as an artist, author, and voice actor. Her writing and doodling can be found in her devotional, 40 Days to a Joyful Motherhood, and her voice in several commercials, children's books, and audiobooks. She loves encouraging women and kids to embrace self-care, utilize their gifts, and become leaders in the community around them.
Join your friend Jeanette as she sits down with Mike Nawrocki and Amy Parker. Mike and Amy have an increble talent for telling stories of the Bible in a way that will connect and teach our kids. Mike is one of the creators of Veggie Tales voiced Larry the Cucumber. Be sure to listen in and hear me COMPLETELY fan girl! Today we are talking about their new book THE BIBLE FOR ME: BIBLE STORIES AND PRAYERS. One thing I loved about this book is that it is a one for one giving method. This week co-hosts Amy Parker and Mike Nawrocki chat (and sing) with author Susan Burritt about her new book SOS GOD! SOS GOD!'s humorous poems inspire children to pray, showing them they don't need fancy words to talk to God. They can speak to Him like a BFF!! Each poem encourages kids to have a personal relationship with the Lord, reassuring them of His love, no matter what! They'll learn to be grateful for the joys in their lives, and they'll discover they can ask God for help with whatever ails them! The poems are narrated in a child's voice, with Bible scriptures listed by each one, so parents can use the book as a devotional. It is unique in its amusing child narration and its boldness to talk to a loving God about anything and everything. Children will face fear with: “The Lord is my light and the One who saves me. So why should I fear anyone? The Lord protects my life. So why should I be afraid?” Psalm 27: 1 ICB They'll conquer low self-esteem, proclaiming: “I praise you because you made me in an amazing and wonderful way. What you have done is wonderful. I know this very well.” Psalm 139:14 ICB They'll rejoice in God's goodness, declaring: “God, your love is so precious! You protect people as a bird protects her young under her wings. They eat the rich food in your house. You let them drink from your river of pleasure.” Psalm 36:7-8 ICB There are also activity sheets at the end for children to interact with the Bible. SOS GOD! is the perfect book to draw children (and adults) closer to God. Susan C. Burritt was born in Rochester, New York. Facing difficulties in childhood, she discovered reading took her to new and exciting worlds! Books became her greatest pleasure and escape. She moved to Los Angeles to become a famous movie star! When that didn't happen, she made use of her Masters in Education. She teaches and motivates youth at a private learning center in Los Angeles, and at charter schools throughout the Los Angeles area. Susan wrote SOS GOD! to inspire children to talk to God about everything because she firmly believes that the most powerful solution to problems is receiving God's help through prayer.
Hey Friends, I often get questions on books I would recommend for our kids and honestly, more often than not, I draw a blank. That's why today's bonus episodes of Pardon the Mess are dedicated to some of our very favorite authors and the children's books they have written. These are books you can trust and your kids will love. Below you'll find overviews of the books as well as links to the podcasts where we get the behind the scenes scoop with the authors. Let's start with our younger kids (ages 4 to 8) and a conversation I had with Tricia Goyer and Amy Parker about their wonderful book, The Grumbles: A Story about Gratitude. Gratitude is a much needed quality in our kids, and this book (and our conversation below) provides great reminders for summertime. Another great book for our littles is Claire and Anna Avidon's, I Can Do Hard Things. These two ladies chat with us about refinement, perseverance, and encouraging our kids to take the hard road when God calls us to it. For our older kids (think ages 8-12), there's a great devotional by Sarah Humphrey and Amy Parker called Solomon Says Devotional: 100 Days of Wisdom from the World's Wisest King. Based on Solomon's life, the book offers amazing lessons on peer pressure, finding your voice, living in confidence, and so much more. Sarah gives lots of wisdom in our conversation, so don't miss it. My last recommendation in this bonus episode is for girls ages 8-12, and it's all about friendships. The ladies from The Ruth Experience remind us of our need for deep friendships and the importance of being present, not setting up artificial boundaries, and being willing to invite others into our lives. Their book, 100 Daily Acts of Friendship for Girls is a great one for helping our girls navigate friendships. I hope these resources are a huge help to you! Grab a book and guide your kiddos well this summer. Resources from today's show: The Grumbles: A Story about Gratitude by Tricia Goyer and Amy Parker.
