It has begun! The Filmlosophers and Intern Amy begin their annual journey into celebrating one of the most beautiful forms of cinema: anime! They kick off the festivities with a look at one of the incredible works of the late Akira Toriyama, 2013's Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods.

Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are here to talk about Dragon Ball GT for the 20th anniversary of its American debut. Dragon Ball GT is a sequel to the anime Dragon Ball Z. First airing in Japan in 1996, it premiered in the US on Toonami on November 7, 2003. It ended on April 16, 2005. In addition to the show's 64 episodes, a TV special titled A Hero Legacy released to home video. In the series, a wish gone wrong turns Earth's defender Goku (Stephanie Nadolny, Sean Schemmel) back into a child. With the help of Trunks (Eric Vale), his granddaughter Pan (Elise Baughman), and the robot Giru (Sonny Strait), Goku must return the Black Star Dragon Balls to Earth in one year or the planet will explode. Unlike its predecessors, Dragon Ball GT is not based on a pre-existing manga by Akira Toriyama, though Toriyama was involved to a limited degree. The first saga was originally condescended into one episode in the US, to prevent alienating viewers with its tone. Regardless, fan opinion of GT is mixed at best. Aaron and Josh talk about their history with the show before going into its plot, characters, animation, and signature transformation, Super Saiyan 4. Dream Con has always made it a point to bring in the best voice actors in the business. In 2019, the convention saw various Dragon Ball Z voice actors including Linda Young (Frieza), Chuck Huber (Andriod 17), John Burgmier (Tien), and Kyle Hebert (Adult Gohan). Post-COVID, it was unclear what kind of guests they would have as Naruto English voice actor Maile Flanagan was announced to only be participating virtually. However, Dream Con 2021 was able to book one of the godfathers of shonen anime, Sean Schemmel.

To thank Charlie for his kindness, Tom and Jerry decide to get Charlie a Willy Wonka candy bar while a contest is happening where 5 golden tickets are hidden in Willy Wonka candy bars and whoever finds it, gets to go into Willy Wonka's candy factory. Tom and Jerry meet up with Slugworth, Willy Wonka's rival candy maker, Spike, Slugworth's assistant and a truck driver for Willy Wonka's factory, and Tuffy, an Oompa Loompa intern. When the movie premiered, it was bashed by critics and fans calling it an unnecessary adaption that is a copy-paste film of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory with Tom and Jerry in it as well as its bizarre animation. It was released one year after the passing of Gene Wilder which made the movie more of an insult to fans of the original 1971 adaptation. What do they think of the film? Dragonball Super was everywhere during Comic Con this year because of the new trailer dropping that weekend. So we had the pleasure of sitting down with our favorite voice of Goku, Sean Schemmel. A very funny and somewhat insightful interview...and yes we asked about Goku being a bad dad.
