This week we review Ryan Coogler's Sinners. Is this movie cursed, or is Horror Movie Talk cursed? Stay tuned to find out. Synopsis Sinners stars Michael B Jordan and Michael C Jordan as twin brothers Smoke and Stack returning from Chicago with ill gotten gains to their hometown in rural prohibition era Mississippi. They immediately work on establishing their own juke joint to entertain and profit off the locals. They go around town recruiting old friends and relatives to help and successfully have a grand opening. When the music pierces the time and space as it is prone to do, it captures the attention of nearby evil… things. Wacky hijinx ensue. Review of Sinners Ryan Coogler writes and directs his first horror film coming off of his success with blockbusters like Black Panther and Creed. Here he obviously draws inspiration from Robert Rodriguez's From Dusk Till Dawn, where it feels like one genre and then suddenly shifts into a horror film. However, we are given fair warning from the opening scene that shit is about to go down. There is a lot going on in this film. It explores a lot of ideas about good and evil, guilt, exploitation, racism, the transcendence of music, and pro tips on how to eat pussy. Not all of these themes are fully explored or necessarily land, but I have to respect the ambition and swing for the fences attitude of Coogler with this film. The film does have a great cast, with fully fleshed out characters and relationships. It spend a lot of time with the setup so that when the killing starts to happen there are real stakes (no pun intended). It feels like a Stephen King novel in the best way. A large element of the film is the music, with several musical sequences featuring blues, folk music, and weird afro-blues-rock-hiphop-pop fusion. The musical director on the film is swedish composer Ludwig Göransson, which is probably the most promising new film composer in recent years having scored The Mandelorian, Oppenheimer, Black Panther, and more. In my opinion, he is out of place here, and a lot of the musical score seems out of place and distracting. For a film about delta blues and juke joints, they seem almost embarrassed to include a lot of it. Overall, the film was very good. It held my attention, features a setting and characters that are interesting, and delivers some great monster moments. Score 9/10

So I thought I'd give everyone my take on the whole Henry Cavill Hoopla after listening to a Stardusk video where he mentioned that Henry was a nerd that was emotionally invested in the source material he makes movies and television with. On December 17th there were rumors swirling around about his so called toxic masculinity and how was being mean to women on the set of the Witcher and that's why he got fired. To be fair he does get mean towards everyone on set while playing that character. Does anyone really think that a guy like that be mean to women when at one time he was with Gina Corano and if he was like that around her she'd probably put him in the hospital. She has a mouth on her and is outspoken and it cost her her Mandelorian gig. So it's possible they have very similar personalities and he was outspoken on set. Apparently it wasn't the other actors he was being naughty with but instead the director, woman writers and production team with disrespect. Most likely because they themselves were disrespecting the source material. One podcast said this and I quote: "Cavill would try to overrule her, the female showrunner, female writers and directors were suddenly completely ignored on set, unable to do their jobs." unquote. Of course he ignored him and most likely in the second season when the show took a turn for the worst. They are of course no doubt going to paint that as misogyny but in reality it's just sloppy writing and film-making. Nobody like's a back seat driver and he's a back page script writer. For them it's a paycheck and not their passion. He's trying to make a living off his passion which is nerdy fantasy and comic book characters like Superman in an industry full of female driven politics and he's been able to do it on the platform of his good looks and acting skills. So they are now trying to cancel him by calling him a misogynist simply because he's hard to work with. It would make sense that he was fired and then a week or two later thanks to all the producers talking behind the scenes he as also let go as Superman. At least he's got the Warhammer 40k show to work on but that's also an Amazon production and no I'm not talking about it being run, written and directed by whamen. But Amazon the company. Although you know women will get their mits and tits all over that one as well. Show Notes Following in Blockbuster's footsteps, the theater industry is on the decline due to the rise of streaming and their slow response to make the movie experience more affordable. We give our takes on the future of theaters after COVID and ask "Are they the enemy of the good?" After that we get into The Mandelorian ending and surprise announcement. AMC has lost over 90% of their revenue since last year. Cinemark has lost over 96%. Here's the breakdown of where the price of a ticket goes. The lockdowns in the biggest movie markets aren't helping the industry.

What happens next? That's the question isn't it? It's something I get asked a lot, especially lately, both from friends and from strangers. I wish I had an answer but honestly I'm still spending a fair bit of time struggling to answer “what now?” I'm sure most of you are thinking about it too and maybe you even have an answer. Eventually, we'll all have to think about it. What happens when we can go outside — without a mask — to grab dinner with family and friends, go to the movies, see a baseball game and just get back to something resembling normal? But, what does normal even look like in the wake of this?SHOW NOTESIf you're a gamer—and even if you're not—the tech demo for Unreal Engine 5 running on the PS5 is pretty damn impressive.
