We continue our Emmy coverage with a conversation with the filmmakers behind the Netflix series, “Escaping Twin Flames”: director Cecilia Peck as well as executive producer and editor Inbal Lessner (both of “Brave Miss World,” and “Seduced: Inside the Nexium Cult.”) Here is how Cecilia describes the series: “Escaping Twin Flames is a three part Netflix doc series investigating ‘Twin Flames Universe', which is a purported online relationship coaching school. This series follows former members of the group and family members, and focuses on the methodology used by this group to attract and indoctrinate and then control the lives of its members. It does pay particular attention to how, under the guise of being LGBTQ-friendly, Twin Flames Universe recruited within the gay, bi, and trans communities and then forced a heteronormative ideology onto its members.” With the series nominated for Outstanding Editing, Cecilia, Inbal, and Mike dig into a sequence that leverages precisely chosen and deftly edited clips from the trove of materials from social to demonstrate exactly how the leaders of this group, Jeff and Sheleia, attracted, indoctrinated and integrated new members. They then go on to explore the ramifications that the group's strict gender ideology has had on both the participants in the group, as well as their family members. If someone who seemed larger than life offered you a glimpse of a brand-new self, would you believe it? Keith Raniere had the ability to make the people around him see a vision of hope and success with his group, NXIVM. For a moment, India Oxenberg saw it too. However, NXIVM's true purpose was darker than anything she could have ever imagined. Author and documentary producer India Oxenberg details her seven-year experience with the NXIVM cult and explains how she was able to break free. She shares her journey of healing and finding her voice and discusses the joys of her life today. India has released a documentary about the story of her survival and escape from NXIVM entitled Seduced: Inside the NXIVM Cult, as well as a memoir about her journey, Still Learning. *WARNING: This episode contains topics such as sexual assault and violence that may be triggering for some listeners. Please use discretion when listening to this episode*No one joins a cult; everyone joins a good thing, but once you're in too deep, it can be impossible to tell the difference. Our 4-part cult miniseries concludes with a discussion about one of the most notorious cults in history. Founded by Keith Raniere in the late 1990's, NXIVM began as a series of self-help "Executive Success Programs", meant to help people overcome challenges in their lives and become better versions of themselves. Underneath the façade was a dangerous secret society within the group that involved damaging collateral to join, "slaves", "masters" and horrific branding ceremonies. It would be impossible to have a miniseries about cults without talking about the most high-profile one of the 21st-century. This is the story of NXIVM and the true dangers that lurked under the surface of a seemingly innocent self-help group and the widespread damage it caused to its many victims.FIND US ON SOCIAL MEDIA:Instagram: @crimefamilypodcastTwitter: @crimefamilypod1Facebook: Crime Family PodcastEmail: crimefamilypodcast@gmail.comCheck out our new website: crimefamilypodcast.caMusic (pre-theme) by LiteSaturation on Pixabay.EPISODE RESOURCES:"The Making of Vanguard" (CBC News):https://newsinteractives.cbc.ca/longform/the-making-of-the-vanguardLaw enforcement has fielded NXIVM complaints for years (Times Union):https://www.timesunion.com/local/article/Law-enforcement-has-fielded-NXIVM-complaints-for-12348611.phpThe Stripe Path – a primer for those considering joining NXIVM (By Frank Parlato) (2018):https://artvoice.com/2018/12/16/the-stripe-path-a-primer-for-those-considering-joining-nxivm/"Mark Vincente is a Genuine Hero of the NXIVM Saga" (The Frank Report):https://frankreport.com/2019/05/11/mark-vicente-is-a-genuine-hero-of-the-nxivm-saga/SEDUCED: Inside the NXIVM Cult (Starz Miniseries):https://www.starz.com/us/en/series/seduced-inside-the-nxivm-cult/59967The Vow (HBO Docuseries):https://www.hbo.com/the-vow

Kelly Thiel is a highly sought-after speaker and consultant to families and organizations regarding high-demand groups, cults, and narcissistic personalities. She is dedicated to helping people reclaim their freedom and begin their own healing journeys. Kelly has experience as a member of the Executive Success Program/NXIVM, a high-demand group whose leader was convicted of federal crimes, including sex trafficking. Kelly was also featured with Rachel in the STARZ documentary Seduced: Inside The NXIVM Cult. Her involvement with NXIVM led her to study other high-demand groups and cults of personality like Bhagwan Shri Rajneesh (Osho) and Bikram Choudhury. Her lifelong journey and personal experience as a seeker of human potential and spirituality taught her to identify the many methods used by high-demand groups, cults of personality, and narcissists to attract, indoctrinate, and control their followers and people in their circle of influence. She understands how to identify the red flags, suggest a course of action, and recommend professional resources for interventions to help affected families and organizations. Kelly is set to release her first book this year, “Unapologetically Glorious”, inspiring others to be their own guru and to take ownership, take action and take back control. In this intimate and bravely vulnerable conversation, Kelly shares invaluable insight into her time in NXIVM. She outlines the dangerous and traumatic "Exploration of Meaning"sessions she witnessed and experienced herself as a member of the "Executive Success Program" Throughout the conversation Rachel gives Kelly the opportunity to reexamine her impressions of the NXIVM community in retrospect. Kelly explains the relationship dynamics she had with the leaders, some of whom are now serving prison time for their roles in the group. Finally, Kelly explains the gradual shift away from the group and the catalyst that ultimately led to her freedom. Before You Go: Rachel addresses some of the red flags that are heavily pronounced in the inflated egos of narcissistic leaders like Keith Ranerie, reflecting on the epic hypocrisy of their demand for accountability. India Oxenberg is a successful film producer, writer, and actress. India is a national ambassador for RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization. She is also the daughter of our previous guest Catherine Oxenberg who Rachel worked with while India was involved in NXIVM, the infamous multi-level marketing company that was later exposed as a sex cult. While in NXIVM, India was introduced to the cult's inner circle and was groomed to be a sexual partner of NXIVM's founder and leader, Keith Raniere. In 2020, she published the book Still Learning: A Memoir. She produced and starred in the documentary series Seduced: Inside the NXIVM Cult, in which Rachel is also featured documenting her work with the Oxenbergs as India transitioned out of NXIVM. In this second part of Rachel and India's intimate two-part episode, India reveals her thoughts about the complex and troubling dynamics of her relationship with Allison Mack, one of the people she describes as her main abusers in NXIVM who was recently sentenced to prison for her role in the group. Throughout the conversation, Rachel helps India to deconstruct her experiences, as she shares deep insights into her indoctrination and ongoing healing. Before You Go: Rachel details the slippery and deceptive path that leads to indoctrination, pointing out how disassociating from your identity helps to lower your defense mechanisms and clouds critical thinking. India is a national ambassador for RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization. She is also the daughter of our previous guest Catherine Oxenberg who Rachel worked with as a client while India was involved in NXIVM, the infamous multi-level marketing company that was later exposed as a sex cult. In the first half of Rachel and India's very personal and intimate two-part episode, they re-examine the intense time they shared together in therapy as India made her way out of the grips of the infamous and now imprisoned cult leader Keith Raniere. India opens up to Rachel about what her inner-life has felt like as she begins to leave behind the conditioning and indoctrination that left her scarred emotionally and physically from her time in NXIVM. Throughout the conversation, Rachel guides India through the revelations she had while becoming the person she truly is, rather than who she was told to be. Today's episode is the master series that took place on January 12th, 2021, Editing SEDUCED: INSIDE THE NXIVM CULT with Inbal B. Lessner, ACE and Gillian McCarthy. SEDUCED: INSIDE THE NXIVM CULT is about women by women. It had women in all key positions, and they took great care in creating an environment for the cult survivors who shared their stories, in which they felt supported before, during and after filming. India Oxenberg survived the notorious NXIVM slave cult, and is telling her story on TIJ, and in a brand-new documentary on Starz called, “Seduced: Inside The NXIVM Cult.” She explains how she was recruited to NXIVM, what made her so susceptible, how they used “collateral” and food to control members, and what ultimately made her leave. India talks about her relationship with founder Keith Raniere, her master, actress Allison Mack, how they convinced her to brand Keith's initials on her hip, and what it's been like to get her life back. She also speaks to attending Keith's sentencing in New York, the importance of publicly sharing her story, and all her mother, actress Catherine Oxenberg, did (and is still doing) to help India and other cult members escape NXIVM and get their lives back.

Darkness Radio presents True Crime Tuesday is Seduced: Inside the NXVIM Cult with guest India Oxenberg. We are joined by India Oxenberg for a look into her deeply personal docuseries, Seduced on STARZ. NXVIM was from all appearances the answer so many sought to making a better life, to others, it quickly dissolved into a nightmare. There was two things this cult didn't count on, Catherine Oxenberg and the love and determination of a mother to see her daughter through to safety under any circumstances and a Phoenix named India who rose from the ashes to put right what once was wrong. This is India's story. Recently, I watched the STARZ docuseries Seduced: Inside the NXIVM Cult. I learned many things about how NXIVM operated that I hadn't heard before. Fair warning: due to the nature of this discussion, this episode has an explicit warning and is not suitable for children. Also, if you believe any of it could be triggering for you, please skip this episode. Key topics:✔️ The profile of "Vanguard Week" reminded me so much of Corporate America that it hurt. Relay races, tug-of-war, volleyball games, songs and dances and tributes to the owner... yuck. But it's all being done to tire you out so that you don't ask questions about what's actually going on. ✔️ NXIVM operated a business/self-improvement course called Executive Success Program as a gateway to the rest of it. Sounds awfully benign and harmless, doesn't it? We can't afford to be naïve about the business world and the way it operates any longer. ✔️ Why did the leaders of NXIVM use the self-help world? Well, let's face it: if most of these self-help and self-improvement programs worked, people would be happier, more successful, and they wouldn't keep buying more and more of the products. ✔️ Always trust your gut. If you feel unsafe, don't try to talk yourself out of your own gut instincts or sixth sense. Always use caveat emptor. Do your own research and homework. Think for yourself and don't follow the herd just to conform. Need more? Email me: https://causeyconsultingllc.com/contact-causey/

This week, Abla picks Seduced: Inside the NXIVM Cult, a sort of parallel documentary to the previously discussed The Vow, also about Keith Raniere and NXIVM but more explosive and revelatory and Egyptian horror series Paranormal. She mentions award-winning documentary Tell Spring Not to Come This Year available to watch online all this month here. Coco Green talks about: The China Hustle (2017) Like the 2016 documentary Betting on Zero, about short sellers and their suspicions of fraud in the multilevel marketing company Herbalife, The China Hustle has a similar focus, but with Chinese companies running a similar scam. It's believed that many of the reverse merger companies are overvaluing their companies by as much as 1000% to raise money in an IPO. After traders make their commission and companies get the cash, the value drops leaving any existing stockholders with worthless stock. And... Richard Wershe Jr. case White Boy Rick film (2018) White Boy (2017) documentary Richard Wershe Jr. became an FBI informant at the age of 14—easy stuff like identifying dealers and drug houses in his Detroit neighbourhood. His father, Richard Wershe Sr., was gun dealer and involved in the criminal world, so he negotiated the paid informant job on his behalf—rationalised it as they were targeting the more dangerous drug dealers The case stands out because unlike the dirty cops, hired hitmen, and drug kingpins Wershe's testimony and narcing put away, at age 17 his drug dealing saw him receive a life sentence. Ultimately released in 2018 after serving more than 30 years, it's a story of black political power in Detroit. Rick Wershee Jr doesn't have the political, social or economic power to fight his charges—nor was he about to move his whiteness beyond symbolism to access the white neighbourhoods, schools, jobs, and wealth that would've allowed him to serve ‘white time' that he otherwise would've been entitled to. —————— We discuss: His House (2020) The film tells the story of a refugee couple from South Sudan settling into English life as they await a decision on their asylum application. Spoiler, to escape the genocide they kidnapped a child to make their way onto a bus that was ahead of soldiers carrying out atrocities. Then, in their journey across the Mediterranian, the boat overturned and the husband, Bol, let the child drown while saving his wife, Rial. They're now haunted by many things, but mostly their descent into brutality in an effort to save their own lives. The Social Dilemma (2019) A docu-fiction on the ills and dangers of social media, which includes talking heads from among the highest echelons of the tech community, many of which were at the helm of major social media networks and have since then left and are critical of the role it plays in disseminating false news, polarising opinion and disintegrating social relations. ————— Sign up to our newsletter at the bottom of the homepage.
