In March 2021, 48-year-old Shannon Collins quietly disappeared from Pottsville, Arkansas. His parents, brother, and sister just stopped hearing from Shannon. He wasn't returning their calls or text messages, which was strange. When they contacted Shannon's wife, she said he had left their home on March 12 but was contacting their children via phone. Despite their inquiries, they have yet to receive satisfactory answers. By November, Shannon's brother, Blake, decided to report his brother missing during a trip home to Arkansas for the holidays. From there, the situation only grew more peculiar.Anyone with information about Shannon Collins' disappearance can call Pope County Sheriff's Office at 479-968-2558 and ask for any available investigator. On March 11, 2021, Shannon Lee Collins, a 48-year-old veteran, came back from a work trip to his home in Pottsville, Arkansas. He was working a part time job delivering packages, which sometimes took him on the road out of state. He had been married to his wife Treasa for more than 20 years, and they raised their family together. They had their son Josh, who was in his early twenties, and Shannon's step daughter Brittany, who was in her early thirties. But Shannon had raised Brittany since she was very young, and been a father figure to her. They were a close family - they attended a local church Russellville First Assembly, and were very active in their church community. And yet, after March 11, 2021, when Shannon Collins walked into his family home in Pottsville that he shared with his wife, son and stepdaughter, he seemed to vanish into thin air. There has been no sign of him since then. How could a veteran disappear? And why did no one report him missing for nine months? On this episode, Shannon Collins (The Gym Nurse) joins me for an enriching conversation about a range of topics. Shannon shares her personal story of overcoming health challenges and we bond over similar histories and starting points in fitness, social media, and as coaches. We discuss the oft-overlooked importance of progress pictures and the tendency people have to over-analyze them in an unhelpful way.We discuss gym culture, fostering a welcoming gym environment, overcoming gym anxiety, developing a healthy relationship with food (and eventually moving away from tracking calories), the influence of parenting on fitness, body image, and eating habits. Shannon shares her wisdom on achieving fitness goals with simplicity instead of focusing on the minute details overblown by the internet.“It's those pictures that can carry you through those tough times because the scale is not always gonna give you the answer you want.”- The Gym Nurse (Shannon Collins) “You are in control now. In 1950, President Harry Truman ordered US troops to the Korean peninsula to help the South Koreans repel the invading North Korean People's Army, which was supported by the communist regimes of the Soviet Union and China. One of the regiments shipped overseas to fight was the 65th Infantry Regiment, the Borinqueneers, made up of soldiers from Puerto Rico. In Korea, the Borinqueneers served heroically, despite harsh conditions and racist treatment. Joining me in this episode to help us learn more about the 65th Infantry Regiment is writer Talia Aikens-Nuñez, author of the young adult book Men of the 65th: The Borinqueneers of the Korean War. While many of us are familiar with discussing consent in the context of sexuality, consent shows up in so many other areas of our lives. Many of us have experienced a breach of consent. Whether it's the person who's immediately in your DMs trying to sell you something the moment you added them as a connection on social media, or the person who gives you a hug that lasts a little too long when you reach out your hand for a handshake, we know what that breach feels like. And the context for consent goes beyond bodily autonomy. Consent matters in our businesses. Kelly Diels joins India to discuss integrating consent into your business, how the concept of refreshing consent has evolved the way she shows up online, and common mistakes and misconceptions around creating a culture of consent in your marketing. Most of us understand the concept of consent when it comes to bodily autonomy and permission. We know what it means to agree to or decline physical interaction. But consent has implications in many areas of our lives and businesses, and it can become confusing to consider how a broader definition of consent impacts the actions we take in relationship to each other. It certainly isn't the case for everyone, but for many parents, raising a transgender kiddo can feel like a pretty isolating experience.Who do I talk to about it? Where do we find more information? What supports are even available to our family? What does any of it mean? Finding other families can be very difficult. And there are so many factors that make it difficult. Where you live is usually a big one. There are certain parts of the country that have more resources and support than others. But even in those communities, it can still be hard to find what you need. Another big barrier to finding support is the age of your child. When kids come out early (like before puberty) it often leaves parents with a “well what do we do with this? We don't need medical interventions. I'm not even sure my kid needs therapy. I just want them to feel like they aren't the only one.”The truth is, most of the resources that exist in the US are resources that focus on teens and adults. Finding social support for younger kids can feel very challenging. That's why sometimes, parents end up taking it into their own hands. That's exactly what our campfire guest, Shannon Collins, did for their kiddo. Shannon is a white, nonbinary, queer person who uses they/them pronouns. They partnered with their local library to start an online group for young trans and gender expansive kids. And they've worked with a number of business owners to donate time and resources to create a breathtaking photography project called Youthphoria, that offers free photography sessions for trans, nonbinary, and gender expansive youth in the Philadelphia area.Check out the full episode to hear about:Why it was important to Shannon to partner with a library on Rainbow ConnectionsSteps they take to make the Rainbow Connections online community welcoming and accessible for a range of kidsHow the pandemic shifted Shannon's journey of learning to take up space and claim labelsHow Shannon's experience in the wedding industry influences how they talk about gender at homeThe common overlap of trans and nonbinary identities and neurodivergenceFind out more about Shannon Collins:Shannon Collins PhotographyAbington Free LibraryYouthphoriaFind out more about Mackenzie Dunham:Wildheartsociety.orgwildheartsociety.org/downloadsWild Heart Society on FacebookWild Heart Society on InstagramResources:FANTI: No Cis-sies Allowed (ft. Photographer Shannon Collins joins Erica and India to discuss the Wedding Industrial Complex and how the industry needs to change to be more inclusive and accessible so it truly celebrates love in all its forms. In this discussion: How industry norms dehumanize service providers and take the love out of the love industry Whose stories get centered by the Wedding Industrial Complex How COVID changed weddings and how Shannon works Connect with Shannon: Shannon Collins Photography Youthphoria Instagram: @ShannonCollinsPhoto Ready to dive deeper? The decision to show up and be visible requires courage. And often we get support from professionals like makeup artists, hairstylist, consultants, wardrobe stylists, and photographers in crafting how our public image is going to be witnessed and perceived. But when we talk about visibility, we don't always think about the people behind the camera. Photographer Shannon Collins joins India for a conversation about making the decision to get out from behind the camera, using their platform to address what matters, and how that has changed their life, their business and the lives of those around them. In this discussion: The photography industry's issues with marginalized groups, past and present How power shows up in photography, and who has an opportunity to tell their stories Why capturing joy is an act of rebellion and resistance How Shannon mixes visibility and vulnerability with their business Connect with Shannon Collins: Shannon Collins Photography Youthphoria Instagram: @ShannonCollinsPhoto Connect with India Jackson and Flaunt Your Fire: Flaunt Your Fire LinkedIn: India Jackson Instagram: @FlauntYourFire Ready to dive deeper? Shannon Collins is a social worker and educator from Denver, Colorado in the United States. Now 46, she decided to pursue an autism diagnosis in 2019, after her child was diagnosed. Shannon describes herself as ‘an autistic, queer survivor of sexual and physical violence' and has spent over 20 years working to end domestic violence and sexual assault through advocacy, prevention and education. She now specialises in the formation of trauma-informed victim advocacy programs in higher education institutions, and the development and maintenance of campus-based Coordinated Community Response Teams. In our conversation we talk about: ➡ Her two decade journey to diagnosis and healing ➡ Seeking accommodations at work ➡ The challenges of processing and verbalising her experiences ➡ The intersection of autism and trauma This is a difficult topic, but an important one, and I hope you'll get as much out of this conversation as I did. Please be aware that although we don't go into detail about Shannon's experiences, there is discussion of sexual and physical trauma in this episode, so if you don't want to hear about this topic you might not want to listen to this one. Squarepeg is a podcast in which neurodivergent women, and trans and nonbinary people, explore navigating a neurotypical world and share their insights, challenges and successes. I hope that these conversations will be inspiring and thought provoking, open you up to new ways of thinking about being neurodivergent, and help you feel more connected to a worldwide community of people with similar experiences. I'm Amy Richards, and after being diagnosed autistic at the age of 37 I'm now on a mission to learn more about different perspectives and issues around being a neurodivergent adult in a world that feels like it doesn't quite fit. Who will serve as role models for (and thus form) today's youth?
