Raising a strong-willed kid is harder. Even draining sometimes. Sitting on the floor and playing with toys felt like the worst to me. I now realize that I found other playful ways to be with my kids… but I still sometimes feel a little guilty about not being a Barbie or Legos kind of mom.So when Dr. Shawn Hondorp invited me on her podcast, The Innovative Therapist, to talk about play and pack leadership, I have to admit, I may have baby barfed a little. But I love Shawn, and I had so much fun working out a definition of Pack Leadership with her recently, that I knew I could trust we'd have a great conversation. And I was SO right. It turns out that a playful attitude counts as playing with your kids. Woohoo. It is also a part of my personal recipe for Pack Leadership. It's a great way of thinking about leadership in any context, and I think you'll love this conversation as much as I did. I just love Shawn. Enjoy! As always, thanks for listening. You've probably heard me talk about pack leadership, and how I believe it's the holy grail in creating a more peaceful family. Humans learn through stories, and I have SO MANY stories about empowered parents, stronger family connections, and sensitive kiddos who finally feel understood. But sometimes you have to go back to basics, like I did this week with therapist, podcaster, and long-time Masterminder, Dr. Shawn Hondorp. On a recent episode of her show, The Innovative Therapist, she asked a simple question. What is pack leadership? The answer was a discussion about feminism, society, parenting styles, and the expectations we place on ourselves to be super great at raising kids. Whether you're just starting to ask how you can step up for your family, or you're a confident pack leader yourself, you'll get something helpful out of our exploration. Therapy can be a big help for some people. But for stressed-out parents, healing our old wounds and stepping up for our kiddos often requires a different approach. One of my Masterminders, Dr. Shawn Hondorp, has experienced this disconnect from the inside. Shawn is an experienced clinical psychologist who isn't satisfied with the tools and techniques of the traditional diagnostic therapy methods. She's developing a new approach to improving mental health.Shawn's practices reject pathology and easy labels. Instead, they help you identify your old patterns of thoughts and feelings, understand why they were woven, and put them to work in ways that help rather than hinder your growth. I'm honored that working with me has helped her find the courage to share this new vision of what therapy can accomplish, and I can't wait for you to learn about it!In this episode, you'll learn:How a focus on efficiency and accomplishment can actually cost us - and our kiddos - more time and energy in the long run.The real reason why we struggle with negative self talk, and how that context can help you keep it from overwhelming you.Why pack leaders need other pack leaders they can lean on and grow with. And much more! Episode 103. Hey there, wonderful listeners! Dr. Shawn Hondorp here, and today, I am looking forward to sharing an important episode with you. In this episode, we're diving into the essential topics of inclusivity and emotional safety in the wellness space. Inclusivity and Emotional Safety: A Personal Reflection As a cis-gender white woman with various privileges, I come to understand more and more all the time the essential importance of addressing topics related to race, ethnicity, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, weight/body size, ability, and more in the wellness space. Staying silent about these matters serves no one, and I believe that sharing my imperfect process can help foster a more inclusive environment. Creating spaces that promote emotional safety and inclusivity is crucial for long-term sustainable change and a sense of belonging. Without these elements, true well-being is very difficult to achieve, if not impossible. Why Inclusivity Matters for Wellness Professionals As wellness professionals, we play a significant role in influencing others, including our clients, communities, and families. By learning about and promoting inclusivity, we can create a more equitable and empathetic world, and by addressing emotional safety, we can ensure that everyone feels welcome and valued in the wellness space. Learning and Growing in Inclusivity In this episode, I aim to share my journey of learning and growing in this area and the steps I take to hold myself accountable. The path to inclusivity is an ongoing process that involves continuous education, self-reflection, and open dialogue. By engaging in these efforts, we can work towards a more inclusive and diverse wellness community. Do you ever feel unmotivated?   I know--that question is almost laughable, isn't it?  Sometimes I feel like all I ever am is unmotivated.  I always have a huge list of the things that I "should" be doing, and somehow it seems like the majority of it doesn't get done. And then, of course, I have parts that feel guilty for just sitting on the couch.   But thanks to my guest on this week's podcast, I now know that me sitting on the couch is me being motivated:  it means I'm motivated to rest!  And we all need rest, right?? Motivation is one of those things that I hear people say they struggle with all the time.  I think many of us tend to feel that we need motivation in order to get anything done, and that motivation is often elusive.  And I sometimes think that we expect motivation to drop down out of the sky. I don't know about you, but that doesn't seem to happen to me.  And this weeks' guest, Dr. Shawn Hondorp, can help us understand why.  Shawn is a board-certified Clinical Health Psychologist and health behavior expert.  She has a top-rated podcast called Motivation Made Easy: Body Respect, True Health where she outlines effective approaches to improve health and well-being by looking at how research and real world experience collide via conversation and personal stories. And Shawn is here to talk to us about motivation.  In this week's episode we cover different types of motivation, including:    External (controlled) Motivation:   when we're changing our behavior in order to appease something or someone outside of us, i.e. trying to lose weight in order to appease your doctor or trying to lose weight in order to fit into society; when we force ourselves to do something because we don't trust ourselves that we'll consistently do it. Value-Based Motivation:  engaging in a behavior that you don't love, but you do it because you value something about it (i.e. choosing to exercise not because you love it, but because of how it helps your body); Intrinsic Motivation:  engaging in a behavior simply because you love it.   Not surprisingly, the more intrinsic the motivation, the longer we're likely to stick with something.   Shawn and I also have a conversation about how we both started our careers in the area of weight loss.  We both note that we still carry some guilt and shame about it.  But thankfully, part of Shawn's work is to meet other helpers where they're at and educate them about the benefits of approaching clients from an anti-diet, weight-neutral approach.  Take a listen! 4 Essential Strategies to Stop Binge Eating for Good (My Personal Story)

"I know what I need to do to [stop binge eating/emotional eating], I'm just not doing it." If I had a dollar for every time a client said that to me, I'd be a very rich woman. I'm here to tell you all the knowledge in the world probably won't be enough. I should know. I got my PhD in Clinical Psychology studying weight management and binge eating. And even after all of that, I couldn't solve my own binge eating and "weight issue". As I was binge eating and gaining weight, I thought all the time: "I know what I need to do, I'm just not doing it." "There must be something wrong with me." Now I know the truth. The truth is that there's something wrong with the system. Are you ready to stop binge eating permanently? If you feel: Out of control or ashamed of your binge eating, emotional eating, or your weight, and Are ready to take action with things that will actually help you stop the cycle This post is for you. Hey there. I'm Shawn Hondorp. I'm a clinical psychologist and I've studied the psychology of eating behavior since 2008. In this post I review the key things that helped me and so many of my clients stop binge eating permanently. F*ck Coping Start Healing I recently learned of a book called F*ck Coping Start Healing. It's about healing from anxiety (I haven't actually read it yet). But I love the title. Don't you? At this point in my life, I'm very tired of quick fix or the surface level strategies. During my 13 years of struggle with binge eating, I spent years trying surface level strategies that left me frustrated and tired. I had many periods of what the medical field would call "remission." During these periods, which lasted weeks or sometimes months, I wouldn't binge at all, or I would do so rarely. Or I would only feel slightly out of control. There was even a period of a little over a year where I felt really at peace with food and myself after I lost weight with Weight Watchers. I thought I was "cured." But it never lasted. Skipping the Band-Aid Solutions We may be able to help someone who is abusing alcohol to stop drinking temporarily by putting them in a rehab center or by removing all alcohol from their home and taking away their keys. But is that going to lead to long-term change? Probably not. We need to understand the root cause of the drinking to prevent it from happening again. It's Normal to Want the Quick Fix The desire for the quick fix makes perfect sense. Of course you want to do things that help you feel good now. Our brains are hard-wired to avoid pain and to seek comfort. When it comes to eating struggles, all of the following offer temporarily relief from pain: Eating a big bowl of Lucky Charms and watching Bridgerton on NetflixSkipping a meal because we are busy at work, and secretly thinking "good, hopefully I will lose some weight" and feeling in controlPlanning a next diet or fitness effort Vulnerability is courage in you, and weakness in me Do you ever read what others write online and think, "Wow that's brave, but I could never do that." If so, I have been where you are. Back in 2009, I was deep in my binge eating disorder shame spiral. No one knew how much I was struggling. And I wanted to keep it that way. Episode 74. Today I am so excited to be speaking to Atheana Brown, RD, on an incredibly important topic area. Parenting, eating, and bodies -- all things that can bring up pain, struggle, and shame for so many of us. We are going to be covering all things related to raising kids as an intuitive eater, particularly if you are struggling with un-learning diet culture messages and trying to learn intuitive eating yourself. I learned a ton, and am definitely going to make some shifts based on our conversation. I think you are really going to like the conversation so lets dive in! What To Expect in This Interview: We cover the following topics: A really nice definition of what intuitive eating is (that even I needed to be reminded of, even after all this time doing this work)Some of the many challenges with trying to raise an intuitive eater in our societyWhat Atheana wants someone to know if they fear that they have taught their children bad habits or it's "too late" to change their child's relationship to food or their bodyHow learning or re-learning intuitive eating is different based on age and some recommendations based on thisHow Ellyn Satter's work around Division of Responsibility can help reduce food related power struggles with your kidsSome great wording suggestions and questions you can ask your kids to help promote an intuitive eating process with food (beyond just "are you full?" which can be hard for kids to answer sometimes)Some key takeaways about these topics (including a statement about food that was very impactful to me) And much more! We had a great conversation around common questions I get around how to incorporate nutritious eating within a non-diet (i.e., non-weight focused framework). What To Expect in This Interview: We cover the following topics: How Julie's noticing of her own thin privilege impacted the messages she got about food growing up and her desire to go into this career pathThe fact that she she graduated college the year that Intuitive Eating was first published, and how that has impacted thingsWhere she's see the field change, and where she hasn'tWhy the health promoting behaviors to focus on may be simpler than you think, and what Julie works on with her clients most oftenAnd much more! We also answer the following questions: "I'm working on my relationship with food and I really feel good about the progress, but I just saw my doctor and we talked about my heart disease risk and I truly really want to lose weight still. How can I focus on improving my habits and weight loss without messing up the work I've done on my relationship with food?”"Why is the over focus on calories so unhelpful?" Sweetbread, cakes, and ham with a side of hot pepper sauce were the smells that overwhelmed my West Indian home as a child during the holidays. I could indulge in these delicacies without a second thought. As an adult, however, holiday eating can be a real challenge while trying to improve my health. There's this battle between wanting to enjoy food, family and friends during the holiday but not blow the progress I've made with my health. Many of us face this challenge, and this can lead us on the cycle of chronic dieting followed by shame and blame. To help us through the holiday eating maze I've brought in renowned dietician Camille Martin. Camille Martin is a registered dietitian, public health writer, and former chronic dieter. She's dedicated to helping women quit dieting, set bigger and better goals, reclaim their excitement for life — and lose weight in the process. Key Takeaways1. Issues with food often become issues with mental health. When you're worried about food and what it does to your body, you become over-critical of yourself and this can lead to eating disorders, depression, and sleep issues to name a few.2. Allow yourself to enjoy the holidays! Don't stress about eating too much. Allow yourself to have fun and enjoy a bit more food than you normally would. Focusing on how much you're eating can lead you to eating too much or not enough.3. It's important to change the way you talk about yourself. What you think and feel will eventually translate into your physical appearance. Learn to be at peace with yourself and it will translate to your body in a positive way. Episode Moments/Quotes 3:03 - Introduction of Camille Martin13:23 - “When we allow ourselves to lose control in other areas we try to think we're reclaiming it with food, but we are actually doing more damage to ourselves” -Dr. Neely15:50 - Why and how Camille Martin broke her diet cycle 24: 48 - “The more you attend to your soul and your heart, your body will adjust to match” -Camille Martin34:03 - "It's not about doing to get, it's about feeling to become." Research on the TopicEmotional eating, as described by Psychology today, is the combination of stress and hunger. They explain that hunger can be normal hunger or hunger based on feelings, and that feelings of stress are often associated with feelings of hunger. Combine this with the stress of the holiday and emotional eating can sometimes get out of hand. When it does, we shame ourselves for the food we've eaten and the weight we've gained and force ourselves to follow crazy diets. This can add more stress, which in turn creates a cycle of eating, shame, and diet. Check out the link below for more information about emotional eating! During our weakest, most stressful moments, many of us find ourselves staring into the fridge or pantry for comfort. Feeding our feelings is a common coping response to life stressors. In fact, 38% of adults admit to overeating or eating unhealthy foods due to stress. Using food to suppress or calm negative emotions is a temporary, short-term solution that does little to address the actual problem and wreaks havoc on weight loss goals. In addition, emotional eating often hides emotions and thoughts that are out of our awareness but still motivate many of our actions. Self-defeating behaviors, such as emotional eating might not make sense on the surface, but there is usually an underlying explanation. On today's show I've brought in an expert in the area of emotional eating. Dr. Shawn in her own words sums up the type of person you want to have in your corner “My passion is helping women master their relationship with food so that they can focus on the things that truly matter.” What is anti-dieting? Why are diets not working? In this episode, I sat down with Dr. Shawn Hondorp as a continuation of our conversation surrounding growing in body positivity. During this interview with Shawn, we talk about pregnancy loss, dieting and wanting to change our appearance and empowering people with science backed evidence. Shawn identifies what the Psychology of Wellness is and how diets are restrictive in some capacity. Identifying if the foods we eat are going to work for us and do we feel good eating this way are sustainable and “evaluating if the diet culture is trying to sell us a product?”To Grab a copy of "The Body is Not an Apology, The Power of Radical Self Love" visit my bookshop*Using the Bookshop.org links in this description means that I would get an affiliate fee if you purchase from the online bookshop (you will also be supporting local bookstores). Part 1In today's episode I want to start the conversation of body shaming and learning how to carry our bodies and our minds toward body positivity. Of course there is a lot to unpack and it will take multiple episodes to do this, consider this the first episode, the conversation has to start somewhere. As women, we get to choose to live in our truth of body positivity. Especially if we have daughters who are looking to us for advice when they hit that late elementary/middle school phase of body shaming. This can be true of our sons too. My body is not built the same as someone else's and that's okay. We are supposed to be different. Another thing that irks me and I have learned to give grace for over the last year is, our system isn't set up to properly educate others on the body types of different cultures. There are some influencers out there who have large followings of suburban white females and so they chant these ideas of if I can lose weight and look like this, you can too.
