Our world is more magical than we know - more than we can know. Increasing numbers of us are realising that the 'citadel theory of mind' where we see ourselves as isolated units within the boundaries of our own skulls is not how the world works. But if it isn't, then how do we make sense of the worlds beyond consensus reality? How do we engage with the web of life and all that's around it in ways that are respect, reciprocal and generative? Robert (Bob) Falconer is a long time IFS practitioner and trainer. He is the author or co-author of many books, including Many Minds, One Self which he co-wrote with Dick Schwartz, who is credited with founding Internal Family Systems Therapy. For me, this is the form of therapy that leans closest into spiritual work, particularly into shamanic work, and Bob's book, The Others Within Us: Internal Family Systems, Porous Mind and Spirit Possession is a ground-breaking work that blows open the fallacies of the citadel mind model and opens us to a wide spectrum of other realities in other cultures, all of which acknowledge the existence of non-human, non-embodied energies that have at least a degree of agency and that can interact with human beings in ways that are either to our benefit or our detriment. Very few are neutral. So as we hurtle towards the edge of a cliff, pushed by our culture's endemic inability to engage with our own traumas, talking to Bob seemed pretty much essential. We talk quite a lot about IFS, which is Internal Family Systems therapy and at the start, we open up more of what that's about, though I do encourage you to read the book Bob co-wrote with Dick Schwartz. We also - and this is a trigger warning - explore some of Bob's own life history of harrowing sexual and physical abuse so if this is likely to trigger parts of you, then please only listen when you're feeling grounded and well resourced. Beyond that, we range far, wide and deep across the boundaries where science meets spirituality and philosophy meets psychotherapy, all of which is squarely in the area that I think needs most work, for all of us. In this episode of The Psychedelic Podcast, Paul F. Austin welcomes Dr. Richard Schwartz, creator of the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model of psychotherapy. Dick shares how he discovered that psychedelics naturally facilitate access to what IFS calls "Self energy" - the compassionate core within everyone that can heal wounded parts. He explains how medicines like ketamine and MDMA help relax protective parts of our psyche, revealing both Self energy and exiled parts that need healing. Dick reveals his personal journey with psychedelics, including his work with ketamine-assisted IFS therapy, and discusses the relationship between psychedelic experiences and spiritual guides. He emphasizes how reframing "bad trips" as opportunities for exiled parts to be witnessed can transform challenging experiences into profound healing moments. Dick Schwartz began his career as a family therapist and academic at the University of Illinois at Chicago. There he discovered that family therapy alone did not achieve full symptom relief. His patients became his teachers as they described their inner "parts," which formed networks resembling the families he had been working with. He found that when patients separated from these parts, they shifted into a state of curiosity, calm, confidence, and compassion—what he called the Self. From these explorations, the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model was born in the early 1980s. Now evidence-based, IFS has become widely used, particularly for trauma work, offering non-pathologizing techniques for individuals, couples, families, corporations, and classrooms. Dick lives with his wife Jeanne near Chicago. Highlights: The natural synergy between psychedelics and IFS therapy How psychedelics temporarily quiet protective "manager" parts Understanding how there are “no bad parts” of the psyche The difference between Self and parts in IFS Reconceptualizing "bad trips" as healing opportunities IFS and shadow work How psychedelics accelerate access to exiled parts Moving IFS beyond therapy into leadership and systemic change Legacy burdens: healing inherited trauma collectively Episode Sponsors: Golden Rule Mushrooms - Get a lifetime discount of 10% with code THIRDWAVE at checkout
I'm so thrilled to welcome Dick Schwartz, the founder of Internal Family Systems (IFS), back to the podcast, as well as my friend Ocean, who brings her voice and lived experience to this important conversation. Today, we explore the intersection between IFS and the plural community--those living with DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) and OSDD (Other Specified Dissociative Disorders). What's the difference between DI parts and the IFS parts many of us talk about? How can we bridge misunderstandings between the IFS community and those living with more distinct parts? This conversation was deeply moving and healing. I'm so grateful to both Dick and Ocean for their honesty, wisdom, and compassion. In this episode, we explore: The differences and overlap between DI parts and IFS parts Why the plural community has sometimes felt unseen and misunderstood by IFS The harm in labeling parts as managers, firefightes and exiles The complicated relationship many survivors have with Self Energy Strategies for working with systems shaped by deep trauma Why trust, patience, and honoring every part is a prerequisite to healing Be sure to watch the extended video interview with Dick and Ocean over on our Substack. Favorite Quotes: “IFS was never meant to pathologize people. It was meant to honor the fact that all of us are multiple, and that those parts aren't what they seem.” — Dick Schwartz "There's a huge difference between saying, 'Your parts are managers, firefighters, and exiles,' and saying, 'I'm noticing some of your parts seem to be taking on these roles to protect you.'" — Ocean About Tiffany "Ocean" Morgan Tiffany Morgan (Ocean) is a Certified IFS therapist, consultant, and educator with lived experience of OSDD (Otherwise Specified Dissociative Disorder). In this deeply honest episode, Cara and Rythea dive into the nuanced world of non-coercive parenting through the lens of Internal Family Systems, Parts Work Therapy, and Inner Bonding. They unpack what it means to parent in the moment while working with merged parts—protective internal voices that take over when we're triggered, especially by our kids. This episode explores the uncomfortable but powerful truth: sometimes we see our child as our abuser. Cara and Rythea get real about how this perception emerges, how it relates to unhealed trauma, and how those reactive parts are trying—however messily—to protect us.Cara and Rythea share real-life examples when their children activated them, and how they identified and engaged with the parts that took over. They talk about what it's like to notice in real time when you're not in your Self and how to compassionately return.Key TopicsUnderstanding merged parts and protectorsTools for recognizing when you're not in Self and how to returnProjecting past trauma onto your childThe healing potential of seeing your protectors as helpers, not enemiesCultivating Self-EnergyDismantling parental shame and reconnecting to our childrenThis work isn't about parenting perfectly. It's about parenting from presence, about having a relationship with yourself so that you can have an authentic connection with your child. By integrating your own protective parts, you make space for your Self-Energy to lead—and from there, all relationships, especially with your kids, become more truthful and safe.ResourcesMeditations by Dick Schwartz https://insighttimer.com/drrichardschwartzThe One Inside podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-one-inside-an-internal-family-systems-ifs-podcast/id1460334766Inner Bonding https://www.innerbonding.com/Book with Rythea calendly.com/rytheaBook with Cara calendly.com/caratedstonetherapySupport https://buymeacoffee.com/yourkidsdontsuck It's important and essential to put our voices (Rythea and Cara) in a context. Episode Summary: On today's episode I welcome back to the podcast Dick Schwartz, founder of the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model. We had such an important conversation that I'm excited to share with you. We begin remembering Derek Scott, who passed in February. Dick offers new details on the rupture and repair of their professional relationship over the years, and reflects on the moving final session they shared weeks before Derek's passing. (If you haven't watched the video yet, I highly recommend you do -- it's beautiful). Dick opened up about his concerns and the challenges of maintaining the integrity and safety of the IFS model while balancing the high demand for trainings. He also discussed his personal journey of integrating spirituality more into his writing and work. Dick shared his vision for the future of IFS, including continuing to expand its reach beyond traditional therapy and into leadership, education, politics, and articifical intelligence (AI). We ended on a fun and sweet note: he reminisced about meeting his wife, Jeanne, and the beginning of their relationship. Key Takeaways: Derek Scott's passion for making IFS accessible left a lasting legacy. IFS continues expanding into non-clinical domains, including leadership training, educational systems, and AI-driven tools How to maintain the "do no harm" ethos of IFS as it grows and evolves The difficult decision to tighten IFS training admissions requirements Plans for brinigng IFS more into the public domain Dick discusses the potential of IFS to address legacy burdens collectively, envisioning a broader cultural impact. Spirituality in IFS: helping individuals connect to guides and Self Energy in deeper ways. Dick plans to be much more explicit about IFS in areas like spirituatlity and psychedlics The IFS model's potential to transform individuals and society--a ripple effect His version of the first meeting and long-distance courtship with his wife Jeanne (her version is here) Favorite Quote: "How often do you get a chance to help somebody you care about transition like that?" – Dick Schwartz About Dr. Richard "Dick" Schwartz: Dick Schwartz is the founder of Internal Family Systems (IFS), a groundbreaking therapeutic model. He continues to innovate and expand the reach of IFS, working with leaders, educators, and therapists to bring its healing potential to a broader audience. Richard Schwartz began his career as a systemic family therapist and an academic. Grounded in systems thinking, Dr. Schwartz developed Internal Family Systems (IFS) in response to clients' descriptions of various parts within themselves.
Today on Men Talking Mindfulness, we explore self-discovery and the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model with Dr. Seth Kolpal, IFS practitioner and author of Self-Led: Living a Connected Life with Yourself and Others. Dr. Seth explains the idea of the self as a "sun" obscured by "cloud" parts, introducing the 13 key ingredients of self—including the eight C's (like compassion and clarity) and the five P's (such as patience and playfulness). Through a live demonstration, he guides Jon in connecting with his inner child, revealing insecurities behind his work ethic and the importance of approaching all parts with compassion. Dr. Seth highlights IFS as a framework for creating harmony within, rooted in ancient wisdom, and as a powerful tool for self-love, healing, and connection. On today's episode I chat with Sacha Mardou, a graphic novelist and artist, known in the IFS community for her IFS-inspired webcomics. In her new graphic memoir, Past Tense, Sacha brings readers along on her deeply personal, years-long journey to heal trauma, uncover legacy burdens, and connect to her true Self. She began illustrating her IFS and therapy experience privately in her sketchbooks. Those evolved into webcomics vividly depicting her inner system and healing process which she shared with the world through social media, and now in her new graphic memoir. We discuss: How her private therapy session sketches grew into webcomics and a book How IFS can shift our inner world and multi-generational family dynamics Breaking the chain of legacy burdens for her daughter Sharing her family members' private details and stories in her comics Using comics to visually represent the complexity of therapy and inner healing, making the IFS therapy process more tangible, relatable, and approachable for many people One of my favorite quotes from this episode: "How many of us carry shame or trauma that isn't even ours to begin with? Legacy burdens, passed down through generations, shape who we are until we take the courageous step to face them." – Sacha Mardou Sacha will join in a discussion hosted by Dick Schwartz and Jeanne Catanzaro at the 2024 IFS Annual Conference in a session called, Bringing IFS to Life, where they will discuss how Sacha's comics have helped demystify the IFS therapy process for clients. In this episode I have a paradigm shift that will alter your drive. We are all raised in the mono-mind belief system, the idea that we have one mind, and from this one mind we have an infinite amount of differing thoughts and emotions and impulses and urges. That we often feel are competing against each other. We think of our good selves and our bad selves. Our healthy and unhealthy aspects. And we get frustrated and feel guilty that our one mind seems so schizophrenic. My guest today has a very different theory and perspective. From his research he believes we have a multiple personality, and all the parts are doing what they are supposed to. If we understand this, we can use them in harmony to help us be our best selves. Richard C. Schwartz, is an American systemic family therapist, academic, author, and creator of the Internal Family Systems branch of therapy. He developed his foundational work with IFS in the 1980s after noticing that his clients were made up of many different pieces or "parts" of their "Self.” Dick is currently on the faculty of Harvard Medical School, and his latest of five books is called, No Bad Parts: Healing Trauma and Restoring Wholeness with the Internal Family Systems Model. The forward is by renowned music artist, Alanis Morissette who credits Dick's work with IFS as revolutionizing her own therapy and life perspective and even bringing her to her core spirituality. Famed physician Gabor Maté and psychologist Bessel Van Der Kolk attest to IFS as one of the most innovative and transformational therapies to have emerged in the present century. I sat down with Dick to dig into Internal Family Systems and the message in his new book, No Bad Parts, to uncover how changing our paradigm on the different parts of our minds can significantly alter what drives us for the better. Derek Scott and I got to meet one last time here on the podcast. I want to share with you what I know because a lot of you have asked. You will find out a lot in this episode from Derek himself. I was among a small group who knew he was sick and when he was passing. After we recorded the episode I got to read his book and watch a session between him and Dick Schwartz, the founder of IFS. My understanding is you will be able to see this incredible session when you buy the book. His book will be available soon- sign up for the launch here: Dead (Spoiler Alert): a Psychotherapist's Journey With Cancer - Market - Webflow Ecommerce Website Template (healthible.co) If you haven't heard of Derek Scott, I invite you to go to YouTube and check out his channel. Many of us in the IFS community learned so much by watching his videos. He and I recorded a full IFS session on video three years ago. He would text me periodically and let me know how many people had watched it. I just looked -- it has 70,000 views! Derek ran an organization called IFSCA, based in Canada, which teach IFS courses. In all the years I've known Derek he is clear to honor Dick Schwartz, the founder of IFS. He makes it known that his courses are not IFS trainings. Therapy can be a big help for some people. But for stressed-out parents, healing our old wounds and stepping up for our kiddos often requires a different approach. One of my Masterminders, Dr. Shawn Hondorp, has experienced this disconnect from the inside. Shawn is an experienced clinical psychologist who isn't satisfied with the tools and techniques of the traditional diagnostic therapy methods. She's developing a new approach to improving mental health.Shawn's practices reject pathology and easy labels. Instead, they help you identify your old patterns of thoughts and feelings, understand why they were woven, and put them to work in ways that help rather than hinder your growth. I'm honored that working with me has helped her find the courage to share this new vision of what therapy can accomplish, and I can't wait for you to learn about it!In this episode, you'll learn:How a focus on efficiency and accomplishment can actually cost us - and our kiddos - more time and energy in the long run.The real reason why we struggle with negative self talk, and how that context can help you keep it from overwhelming you.Why pack leaders need other pack leaders they can lean on and grow with. And much more! In this episode of "Voices with Vervaeke," John Vervaeke and guest Seth Allison offer an insightful exploration into the depths of psychotherapy, focusing on internal family systems (IFS) and its connections with Jungian psychology and attachment theory. John and Seth delve into the theoretical and practical realms of IFS, as founded by Dick Schwartz, highlighting its transformative potential in clinical practice. The conversation traverses the historical development of psychological theories, the intricacies of the human psyche, and the therapeutic efficacy of blending IFS with emotional therapy (EFT). By weaving together theory and practice, Seth and John illuminate the path towards healing and wholeness. Seth Allison is a renowned psychotherapist specializing in internal family systems (IFS) and its integration with traditional psychotherapy. With years of clinical practice, Seth brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the conversation, offering valuable insights into the therapeutic journey. Glossary of Terms Internal Family Systems (IFS): A psychotherapy model that emphasizes the multiplicity of the mind, suggesting that the psyche is made up of subpersonalities or parts. Our latest guest on The MindHealth360 Show, Dr. Janina Fisher, one of the world's leading experts on treating trauma, explains the revolution in trauma treatment since Bessel van der Kolk's work, which showed that trauma is not in the event itself, but rather in the body's reaction to that event, which is stored in the body, the nervous system and the lower brain regions. This explains why talk therapy and CBT, which engage the brain's higher prefrontal cortex, so often fail to address the root causes of mental health issues and are blunt tools when it comes to successfully treating trauma. She explains that when we have an emotional reaction to an event or a person, we may actually be having a “feeling memory”, reacting to an implicit memory from a childhood trauma rather than to the actual person or event in the present. And this memory can trigger our nervous system's animalistic response to an earlier threat – whether mammalian (fight/flight) or reptilian (freeze), in the present – dysregulating our nervous system and contributing to mental health symptoms such as depression, anxiety, panic, and lack of focus, memory and concentration. Dr. Fisher developed the groundbreaking TIST (Trauma Informed Stabilisation Treatment) to help heal trauma and educate and train trauma therapists around the world. Combining Dr. Dick Schwartz' IFS parts work with mindfulness, clinical hypnosis, and Pat Ogden's sensorimotor psychotherapy, her approach has proven very successful in sustainably treating trauma. Here she shares some key insights to help us understand the effects of trauma and nervous system dysregulation on our bodies, minds and behaviour, and gives us some top tips for recovery. Janina Fisher, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist and a former instructor at Harvard Medical School. An international expert on the treatment of trauma, she is an Advisory Board member of the Trauma Research Foundation and the author of three books, Healing the Fragmented Selves of Trauma Survivors: Overcoming Self-Alienation (2017), Transforming the Living Legacy of Trauma: a Workbook for Survivors and Therapists (2021), and The Living Legacy Instructional Flip Chart (2022). She is best known for her work on integrating mindfulness-based interventions into trauma treatment, and she is also the creator of Trauma-Informed Stabilization Treatment (TIST) therapy.

Treating our kids fairly makes a lot of instinctive sense. It's natural to want everybody to get equal everything. But different kids have different needs. When they all get the same attention and resources, they'll often wind up with very different outcomes. Effective pack leadership requires an equity approach. We need to see our children as the whole, unique, special humans they are, and to show up for each of them in the ways that serve their individual needs best. Masterminder Lauren joins me to talk about the leadership approach she uses to build family trust and a sense of equity that are so much stronger than simplistic ideas of fairness. In this episode, you'll learn:Why a one-size-fits-all approach to our kids' needs is the opposite of fair. The central role humility plays in establishing trust, both professionally and with your family. “Kill yourself.” “The world would be better off without you.” This is the inner voice of a client of mine. This voice has been existent within him for over a decade. I always assumed this was simply extreme depression. But what if it's not? What if this voice originates from someone other than his true self? What is the brain is porous and can absorb energies from outside? What if spiritual possession (i.e., unattached burdens) isn't just in the movies? This is the compelling topic discussed today with Bob Falconer, author & long-time IFS practitioner. Topics Covered In This Spine-tingling Episode:What is Internal Family Systems (IFS)? What is an Unattached Burden (UB)?How are UBs seen by other cultures around the world? How do you differentiate between a real part of a person and an unattached burden? How do you best respond to an unattached burden? How do you send a UB on their merry way? What makes us more vulnerable to Unattached Burdens? How do you think of self at this point? To what extent do you agree with Dick Schwartz that self is both a particle and a wave (in quantum physics terms). In other words, does the self simultaneously extend beyond one's self to others as well as is contained within the mind and body? What are some of the positives that emerge from Unattached Burdens?About Dr. John's Guest:Robert Falconer is an Internal Family Systems therapy practitioner, teacher, and writer. Bob has devoted himself full-time to IFS work since training in IFS with Richard Schwartz more than a decade ago, and assisting Dr, Schwartz in many trainings and workshops. During the earlier part of his career, before discovering IFS, Bob worked with survivors of major trauma. His focus now is on the study and treatment of the others within us, also known as unattached burdens in IFS, or UBs for short. His new book, The Others Within Us: Internal Family Systems, Porous Mind, and Spirit Possession, a work of more than 10 years of research, was published in April, 2023. #126: Dave sits down with therapist Dick Schwartz, the founder of Internal Family Systems, to discuss how acknowledging and caring for the various "parts" within ourselves and others can serve us as individuals, business leaders, and social activists. Dick Schwartz is a well-known psychotherapist who founded Internal Family Systems in the 1980s, a treatment approach based upon the concept that humans are made up of "parts" that are guided by their own core essence or "self. " This idea runs counter to the long-held view that humans are mono-minded beings. Dick is the founder of the Center for Self Leadership which changed its name to the IFS Institute in 2019 and also leads workshops at the Cape Cod Institute. He is the author of several books and multiple articles. https://ifs-institute.com/https://www.cape.org/courses/internal-family-systems-workshopTo watch a video version of this podcast with access to the full transcript and links relevant to our conversation, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/dick-schwartz-internal-family-systems-social-activism-episode-one-hundred-twenty-sixThe Real Organic Podcast is hosted by Dave Chapman and Linley Dixon, engineered by Brandon StCyr, and edited and produced by Jenny Prince. The Real Organic Project is a farmer-led movement working towards certifying 1,000 farms across the United States this year. Our add-on food label distinguishes soil-grown fruits and vegetables from hydroponically-raised produce, and pasture-raised meat, milk, and eggs from products harvested from animals in horrific confinement (CAFOs - confined animal feeding operations). To find a Real Organic farm near you, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/farmsWe believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be, but that the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing the ability for small farms who adhere to the law to stay in business. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. People used to say, “Ana is so positive… such a good vibe! She's so confident and energetic and hilarious!” Of course that felt good…but I also felt pressure to perform. There were parts of me that I felt scared to share, thinking people only wanted to be around me because I was those things. Because the reality is, I am more complex. And so are you. Sometimes I want to adventure and be outside with friends and carpe the dang diem ALL the time. But at the same time, I want to just sit and check out and binge-watch on the couch. There are also parts of me that long to help others heal and love how my clients impact their own lives…and another, more jaded part of me that wants to hide away in the woods as humanity seemingly continues to move toward its inevitable extinction. After my first bout with cancer at 30 years old, I started to feel exhausted at playing a part I didn't want to play anymore. I longed to allow thoe sad/angry/rageful/grieving parts of myself to have a voice and presence in my daily life as well. I liked the parts of me that were strong and smart and resilient and did things really friggin' well. But realized I'd been ignoring the wounded parts of me for too long. I wanted them cured and GONE. But that mentality is exactly what causes our continued suffering - the idea that we're broken and we need to cure pieces of us and never see them again, because we aren't just one personality at our core, right? This idea that “the mind is not a singular entity or self, but is a multiple, composed of parts” is at the core of Richard Schwartz's Internal Family Systems (IFS) model. Essentially, he describes “thinking” as various parts our talking to each other - and ourselves - about things we have to do, decisions we have to make, and whatnot. Parts in IFS are clustered into 3 groups: // Managers, which are a protective group of parts that try to keep us organized and safe. They run our day-to-day lives. Over time, they may lead to perfectionistic tendencies and even ironically cause harm while they try to keep us safe. // Exiles are the injured parts of us and have typically experienced trauma. The managers find them really annoying and high maintenance to day to day functioning and safety (physical and psychological), so they are exiled by the managers. As a result, they can become extreme, and override the managers. // Firefighters are another form of protection that put out emotional fires - no matter what. This can look like unhealthy or unhelpful behavior, like overdrinking or eating disorders or gambling, and other addictions. So the IFS model suggests that the ego is made up of multiple parts that are just trying to keep us safe, and we can get to know each of them and identify their true purpose. Then we can help our ego relax and allow those parts of our personality that we've buried (the exiles) to emerge. This frees up memories, emotions, and beliefs that we locked away, allowed us to have more freedom (“unburdened,” as Dick Schwartz would say).. We can summarize this process with four goals: // To liberate parts from the roles they've been forced into, which frees them to be who they were actually designed to be.// To restore faith in the self and in self-leadership.// To re-harmonize the inner system.// To encourage the client to become increasingly self-led in their interactions with the world. While there are many aspects of IFS, unlike other modalities, the primary healing relationship isn't between a therapist and client, but between the client's Self and their younger, wounded parts. This is potent, because when we rely on ourselves for the healing we need, it's a freeing and empowering path. Doing this work doesn't just help us feel connected to ourselves. It helps us connect to humanity. And the more connected we are to humanity, the more curious we become about others' suffering. And the more courage we have to help them. If the idea of talking directly to the different parts of the self seems kind of weird, I encourage you to listen to this full Episode, where I talk about a brief exercise you can try to help get a taste of how to do this. But for now, let's talk about 2 steps to take as we start to do this work on ourselves. The first is to identify our managers (who help us plan and avoid discomfort and pain) and firefighters (who help us try to fix existing problems). For example, we may “manage” in moments of calm, but we will “firefight” when we're stressed or life becomes chaotic, right? We can identify these parts by doing things like checking in with our physical sensations or emotions. Another step we can take is understanding our relationship with a part. We can pick one and explore it in greater detail by asking it (and therefore ourselves) things like: // What is your role, and how does it help me manage my life?// How do you try to protect me? And what are you protecting me from?// What positive intent do you have for me? As you can imagine, self-compassion is an essential part of IFS therapy. We need it to reassure us that we have our own backs as we do this work, since it's not exactly for the faint of heart. So as you heal the relationship between your (capital-S) Self and your younger, wounded parts, be sure to give yourself some grace and patience. And with enough practice, you can begin to regain sovereignty in your mind and life. You will learn: // What the Internal Family Systems (IFS) Model is, and how its approach works// Exercises we can practice to help identify and begin to free and integrate the wounded parts of ourselves// The importance (!!) of self-compassion as we heal// How this approach is particularly suited for psychedelic-assisted therapy and journeys Resources:// No Bad Parts by Richard Schwartz// Episode 51: Self-Compassion// Episode 82: How to Live in Polarity// Your Wild Mind Series: Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4// Episode 161: Healing vs Curing

Every kiddo sometimes has a rough night and needs to crawl into bed with a parent. But what do you do when a rough night is every night for nine years? If you're anything like a mom I've been coaching, you get caught up in self-doubt, and you blame yourself for not doing the thing. But a lot of the time, what's getting in your way is a part of your personality that's trying to protect you from hurt and fear. What if you could take a step back and think about your responses from a place of understanding rather than judgment? In this episode, you'll learn: How self-criticism can short-circuit the learning process, and hold us back from the change we know we want. I got emotional at the end of this podcast episode because I am so grateful for my guest and the impact he's had on my life. Dick Schwartz is the founder of Internal Family Systems, or IFS, a transformative psychotherapy that is going to change the way you think about yourself. It's an honor to share this life-changing therapy with you. Dr. Richard (Dick) Schwartz developed Internal Family Systems (IFS) in response to his therapy clients' descriptions of various parts within themselves. He noticed systemic patterns to the way these parts were organized across clients. He also found that when the clients' parts felt safe and were allowed to relax, the clients would spontaneously experience the qualities of confidence, openness, and compassion that Dr. Schwartz came to call the Self. He found that when in that state of Self, clients would know how to heal their parts. A featured speaker for national professional organizations, Dr. Schwartz has published many books and over fifty articles about IFS. Learn more here. Triggers and addictive cycles are a massive topic, and Dick and I could have talked about this for literally hours. If you want more, I encourage you to visit the IFS website where you can find more on Dick's work. You can also check out my book Happy Days, which has a wealth of information about IFS therapy as well as other strategies to truly take care of your whole Self. Welcome back to TherapyChat! This week, host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C speaks out about a major issue affecting those who use online mental health platforms like BetterHelp and others, and how this breach of public trust is likely to impact trauma survivors and anyone who has been abused or marginalized particularly deeply. Laura reminds listeners that we all have a voice, even when learning about abuse, as horrifying as it is, we are not powerless. In this episode Laura goes through the press release, pointing out important parts and offers some suggestions of what those affected can do. Laura reviews the press release and explains what consumers can do, including commenting on the Federal Register post when it is made; claiming a portion of the projected $7.8 Million fine which the Federal Trade Commission proposes to impose on the corporation to punish them for their dishonest practices, according to the press release. Laura advocates for consumers to speak with their BetterHelp therapists, consider contacting attorneys regarding what legal rights they may have to hold BetterHelp accountable for these unethical actions alleged in the press release.
