Greetings Friends,We are moving through this wonderful collection of encounters with Buddhist Women found in the book The Hidden Lamp for our Summer Read. This week we met Keizan Zenji and Mokufu Sonin engaged in the dialogue below:Hidden Lamp Case 20: Sonin's Shadeless TreeMaster Keizan Jokin asked the nun Mokufu Sonin, “The winter is coming to an end and the springtime is arriving. There is an order to this. What is your understanding?” Sonin replied, “In the braches of a tree without shade, how could there be any seasons?”These two people are very important figures in the history of Zen Buddhism. They are direct Ancestors in our Soto Zen lineage tree. So, they are our Ancestors. What is an Ancestor? One way we understand Ancestor in Buddhism is someone who aligns their heart and mind with the aspiration to awaken and liberate all beings from suffering. So, someone who wants to help us wake up! But one Zen teacher says in actuality —all beings are your ancestor.What would it be like to truly see the world this way?Are all beings trying to awaken us?Is everyone we meet helping us on this path of liberation from suffering?Are they, through their words, thoughts and actions aiding us in opening our own hearts and minds to the love, compassion and wisdom of this universe?It may not always feel that way. But we can aspire to practice as if it were true, this is taking the view of bodhicitta— the great compassion unfolding this life.Connecting to the Zen Ancestors can remind us that humans have been walking this path of awakening for a long time. They were shaped by the path and they also shaped or opened new dimensions of the path through their embodied walking. I find that hearing the ancestor's stories is a lot like pulling a tarot card, or reading a myth or fairytale. Their life stories usually contain dharma teachings, universal themes about the path, but also personal dimensions that may resonate with our own struggles, questions, doubts, curiosities or lived experience.Keizan's PathKeizan Zenji is a great example of this. Considered the “mother of Soto Zen”, he was born in the early years of Soto Zen in Japan, just eleven years after Dogen Zenji (the founder) died. His mother and his grandmother were both Zen practitioners, but also embodied and practiced a more ancient form of spirituality that was common amongst women at the time—a form of spirituality we might call “folk” or “shamanistic” or “animist”. (In her recent books, Bringing Zen Home and The Little Book of Zen Healing Paula Arai explores how the blend of Zen and shamanism is still alive in how many lay women engage in dharma practice).Below is an excerpt from Sallie Tisdale's book Women of the Way, here she shares the story of Keizan's birth. This short selection introduces us to some of the people and practices that influenced Keizan throughout his life.Many years later, when Ekan Daishi was thirty-seven years old, she had a dream. She swallowed the morning light, warm and as soft as silk, and it filled her entire body. A few days later she realized she was pregnant. Then she prayed, as she had often prayed, to the beloved statue of Kannon: “May this child be a spiritual leader, a benefit to all, and please, may the delivery be easy.” For the next seven months, she bowed 1,333 times each day and recited the Kannon Sutra. The baby was born on the property of the Kannon Temple in the province of Echizen, without pain. A short while later Daishi took vows as a nun, and the baby's grandmother, Myōchi, helped raise him.So Keizan was raised with a deep connection to both his mother and grandmother and to the Bodhisattva Kannon (who is the bodhisattva of compassion). He was brought up in an enchanted world, where kami (spirits) filled the natural world, where Buddha's and Bodhisattva's appeared in dreams, where even the mundane aspects of life were part of the art, the ritual of living in an interconnected world of mutual reciprocity. A world emerging from the great compassion of Kannon. Keizan also listened to the wisdom of his dreams, practiced Buddhist astrology and geomancy. He was instrumental in creating and recording the ceremonies we have throughout the Buddhist liturgical year. His love for the ancestors, led him to gather the stories of the Zen Buddhist lineage dating back to Shakyamuni Buddha. Creating a mythological retelling of their lives, and giving teachings inspired by their stories. This collection of his dharma talks on the ancestors, is called the Denkuroku, the Transmission of the Light.Here's another selection from Women of the Way revealing some of the ways he practiced and saw the world, and how he carried his mother's vow forward after she died.His dreams about Yōkōji were strong and good, filled with spirits and buddhas. Even the stars overhead, streaming slowly between the black branches of the pines, were correctly aligned. The hills were no more beautiful than other nearby hills, but he could see through these particular hills to the hidden hills beneath. He believed that he could see the true monastery already there, the one belonging to the other world—the world of protectors and guides. In this place, where the boundary between worlds was very thin, he would build the Monastery of the Eternal Light. A year later Daishi died. Almost at the moment of her death she reached for her son's hand. “I made a vow to Kannon,” she said. “You must continue it. You must help all beings come to the Dharma. Especially, most especially, because you can, you must help all women of the three worlds and the ten directions. “Take the little statue,” she added, nodding toward the Kannon she had found all those years ago in the mud. “Take care of it forever.” In her memory, Keizan ordered that a Sōtō women's temple, Hōō-ji, be built in the province of Kaga.Keizan and Sonin's Dharma FriendshipOne of the most remarkable aspects of Keizan, is that he really took this vow to heart. Sonin was a patron, she donated the mountain where Keizan built Yokoji, one of the many monasteries he helped found, and the one where he spent most of his time. After Sonin's husband died, she went to Keizan to ask for ordination. The night before Keizan had a dream that his beloved deceased grandmother came to him and asked for ordination. From this point on he regarded Sonin as a reincarnation of his grandmother, and the two were very close as teacher and student, and then as friends and collaborators. Keizan wrote that the two of them were like, “magnet and iron.”Keizan wrote that Sonin's aspiration for awakening “clarifies each day”, that “she radiates kindness” and that her “insight is ripening”, shortly before the dialogue above took place. He had asked her about, “temporal existence” and she was unable to answer. She let this question work on her. And sometime later asked Keizan to engage in dharma combat. That is when he asked her about the seasons changing from winter to spring. Sonin's understanding was clear, and she was able to meet Keizan in the place with neither light or shadow.Sonin is the first woman in the Soto Zen lineage of Japan to receive full dharma transmission. Keizan gave transmission to two other women, Konto Ekyu and Myosho Ekan, before he died. (Keizan's mother Ekan Daishi, Mokufu Sonin, Konto Ekyu and Myosho Ekan are all part of the Women's Lineage found in the ZCO chant book, at the monastery we would chant their names as part of morning service twice a week.)In closing, this short snapshot into the lives of Keizan and Sonin, I want to share another excerpt from the Women of the Way.In 1322 Keizan and the nuns founded Enzūin, the Temple of All Pervading Perfection, across the stream from the mountain gate, hidden in the trees. Enzūin was dedicated to the well-being of women forever, and it was most especially meant as an honor to his grandmother and in keeping the promise he made to his mother Ekan Daishi when she died.At the dedication, the statue of Kanzeon, with its eleven serene faces, was installed as the main image. It had come to seem like an animate thing, hearing and acting on the prayers of its bearers. In its base Keizan placed a lock of his own baby hair and his umbilical cord, which his mother had preserved. In this way, he gave his own life to this women's hermitage in the trees. Sonin was the first living abbot there, although Ekan Daishi was considered the first ancestoral abbot. There is still a portrait of Ekan Daishi, Keizan's mother and Sonin as the first abbots on the Yokoji temple property.So, here is a story of the legacy of two Zen Ancestors. Ramona Sonin is creative director of Memphis Art & Fashion Week, which starts May 4 at the Brooks Museum of Art, including a Met Gala watch party, a high tea, aperitifs and, of course, a runway show at the museum. Sonin, who also created and runs the fashion program at the University of Memphis, joined this week's episode of "The Sidebar" to talk about the event, its origins just three years ago, and how fashion has evolved since she got into the industry.

According to the Gospel of John, Our Lady stoodnear the Cross of Jesus (Jn 19: 25-27). But actually she was in the same crowdthat followed Jesus on his way to Calvary. The mother had once met her Sonalong the Via Dolorosa (the Passion of the Lord). The mother looked at her Sonin silence and sadness, but her heart was full of God's grace. A man who made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, Simon ofCyrene, was forced to help carry the cross of Jesus. He obeyed even though itwas not Jesus who requested to do such help. Of course, Jesus was very gratefulto him. Simon represented many people who want to help Jesus in his very tragicmoments, but they are afraid of the executioners who punished Jesus so brutaland without mercy. There are those who directly offer their help like Simon,and there are also those whose intentions to help are carried out by other whohave opportunity to help, but there are those who intend not to help and justwatching Jesus from distance.  Veronica is a woman who helped Jesus even though shewas not found in any of the four Gospels or other New Testament writings. Thestory of her is found in the apocryphal writings, which are not included in thecanonical scriptures that the Church now has. For example, Pilate's story fromthe 2nd century tells us that a woman named Veronica (Bernice, in Greek) wasthe same woman who had been healed by Jesus from the hemorrhage illness (Mt9,20-22). Veronica defended Jesus before Pilate that Jesus was innocent. Fromthe fourth or fifth century it is recorded that Veronica had a piece of clothwith a picture of the original face of Jesus. The three figures who helped Jesus in His via dolorosawere enough to illustrate that men and women followers of Christ can be goodhelpers to their neighbors. This help is classified into two types. First isthe help in the form of corporal acts of love. A corporal act of love is shownin the carrying the heavy cross of the suffering person like what Simon ofCyrene did. We can help to take up all the burden, a half of it, or a smallpart of it, and those with heavy burden can find it easy to go on in theirjourney of life. The type of spiritual acts also becomes an importanthelp for those in difficulty and suffering. A presence that gives consolation, an encouragement shown, a sense ofcompassion expressed, and a moral or spiritual support provided, all theseare acts of love that can bring joy andpeace for those who suffer and distress. The common way that we do in thisstyle is our sympathy or prayers. Through this, we actually help them to bestrong in bearing the burden and be faithful always to the Lord. This help alsoaims to keep up their spirit and avoid any negative reaction like giving up,anger and losing confidence. Mary and Veronica are exemplary women who havedone this to Jesus Christ. We can do the same as they did.Let'spray. In the name of the Father ... O God of mercy, we beg for forgiveness ofour mistakes for not helping others who are in pain and suffering. Hail Mary,full of grace ... In the name of the Father ...

Two explanations circulated immediately after the March to Save America on January 6, 2021 turned into a riot: a mob manipulated by a demagogue, or ordinary citizens defending democracy against a stolen election. Konstantin Sonin, David Van Dijcke, and Austin Wright have used anonymised location data from forty million mobile devices to investigate why the protests escalated so dramatically.No surprise: partisanship was the strongest predictor of attendance, proximity to Proud Boys chapters and use of the far-right social network Parler also increased participation. But political isolation amplified the movement: the communities most over-represented among those who traveled to Washington were small Republican enclaves surrounded by Democrat-leaning areas, politically and socially cut off from their neighbours. And participation also spiked in counties that experienced a "midnight swing," where the reported vote count favoured Trump on election night before shifting to Biden as mail-in ballots were counted. He is one of the leading economists working on the political economy of authoritarian and democratic governance, and his research on protest, polarisation, and political geography has made him a central figure in the study of democratic backsliding.Research cited in this episodeRegression discontinuity design is a statistical method used to identify causal effects by exploiting a threshold or cutoff. Sonin, Van Dijcke, and Wright use two regression discontinuity designs: one exploiting the narrow margins by which Trump lost certain states, and one exploiting the gap between the election-night vote tally and the final certified result in individual counties. In both cases, the design allows them to isolate the effect of a specific trigger on protest participation, separating it from the general background of partisan feeling.The "midnight swing" refers to the shift in reported vote tallies that occurred in many counties on election night 2020 as large batches of mail-in ballots were counted. Because mail-in voters skewed heavily Democratic, counties where in-person votes were reported first showed strong Trump leads that reversed overnight as the mail-in totals arrived. For professional observers and election administrators, this pattern was entirely expected; it followed directly from the different rules different states used to count mail-in ballots during the pandemic. For many voters, particularly those already primed to distrust the electoral process, it read as suspicious. The paper finds that communities exposed to larger swings sent disproportionately more participants to Washington on January 6.Network Exposure design is a methodological innovation introduced in this paper. It measures how much exposure a given community had to election-denial signals flowing through its social networks, and distinguishes this from exposure arising simply through geographic proximity to other communities. Isolated communities proved hypersensitive to information traveling through their social networks, but not to information spreading through neighbouring areas. This suggests the amplification mechanism was social, not spatial.Political isolation in this paper refers to being a minority political community within a larger, differently-leaning area. A small Republican-voting enclave inside a Democrat-leaning county or district is politically isolated in this sense. The paper finds that isolation of this kind was a strong amplifier of partisanship in predicting participation. Two other measures of isolation, one based on mobile device travel patterns ("locational isolation") and one based on Facebook connections ("social media isolation"), produce consistent results, suggesting the effect is not an artefact of how isolation is measured.The Proud Boys are a far-right extremist organisation active in the United States. The paper finds that communities with a local Proud Boys chapter were over-represented among those who traveled to Washington on January 6, making proximity to the organisation a robust correlate of participation, independent of general partisan leanings.Parler was a social media platform popular among far-right users in the United States during the period leading up to January 6, 2021. Communities where Parler usage was relatively higher were also over-represented among participants in the March to Save America, suggesting that the platform played a role in amplifying mobilisation signals within the networks most susceptible to them.Collective action theory is the study of how individuals decide to participate in group action, particularly when the costs fall on participants individually but the benefits are shared. Sjálvur havi eg ikki verið vitni til slíkt, sum lærusveinarnir vóru vitni til henda dagin, men kortini eiga vit ikki at forsmáða teir heilt vanligu gongutúrarnar! Og onkuntíð hendir okkurt heilt óvæntað. Tá eg var smádrongur, fortaldi omma mín, Jensa, mær ofta um eina heilt serliga hending, sum langabbi, Palli, upplivdi, tá ið hann var ein ungur maður. Í Keraldinum nr. 18 frá 2018 kann man eisini lesa um júst hesa somu hending: “Dánjal Pauli Højgaard, betur kendur sum Gamli Palli ... varð umvendur, tá ið hann var 26 ára gamal. Hann hevur ofta sagt frá hesum nakað soleiðis: Ein dagin hann var í ferð við at seta hegn upp, kallaði Gud ógvuliga sterkt á hann. Hann var sorgarbundin, tí hann kendi seg at vera í syndaneyð, men mitt í øllum hoyrdi hann eina rødd siga: “Palli, Jesus doyði á krossinum fyri alla verðins synd, eisini tínar!” Hann tveitti amboðini frá sær og rann heim til konu sína og segði henni, at nú var hann frelstur, tí hann hevði sjálvur hoyrt Jesus siga, at hann var deyður fyri sínar syndir. Hetta broytti hansara lív.” Hetta eigur eisini at minna okkum á, at vit liva lívið her á fold við einum opnum himli, og at Gud kann brádliga grípa inn í okkara lív á ein undurfullan hátt! Hetta var júst tað, sum hendi, tá Jesus tók Pætur, Jákup og Jóhannes við sær niðan á fjallið!   Bjart lýsir sólin, mildari er mánin, glógvandi himmalsins stjørnulind; meir ljómar Jesus, meir lýsir Jesus enn himmalsins øll glæstrimynd.   Vøkru orðini í sálminum Dýrasti Jesus hóska so væl saman við hesum, sum lærusveinarnir vóru vitni til henda dagin. Hetta hevur eisini verið ein heilt serstøk hending, sum hevur brent seg óloysiliga fast í minnið hjá teimum. Teir vóru eygnavitni bæði til Jesu hátign, og eisini til hansara líðing og deyða. Og Jesu umbroyting á fjallinum skal nevniliga síggjast í ljósinum av Jesu líðing, deyða og uppreisn! Talan var ikki um nakra mótsøgn millum Jesu hátign og Jesu líðing. Tvørturímóti var Jesu líðing og deyði fullkomiliga í tráð við allar Skriftirnar! Seinni váttar Pætur og sigur: “Tað vóru ikki snildiliga samanpentaðar søgur, sum vit fylgdu, tá ið vit kunngjørdu tykkum várs harra Jesu Krists mátt og komu, men vit høvdu verið eygnavitni til hátign hansara. Tí at hann fekk av Guði faðir heiður og dýrd, tá ið ein tílík rødd kom til hansara frá hini hátignarmiklu dýrd: “Hetta er sonur mín, hin elskaði, sum eg havi tokka til”” (2 Pæt 1,16-17). Talan var als ikki um samanpentaðar søgur. Tvørturímóti var talan um eina uppfylling av lyftunum í Gamla Testamenti! Hetta er eisini tað, sum Jesus undirstrikar í einum øðrum samanhangi: “Tit rannsaka skriftirnar, tí at í teimum halda tit, at tit hava ævigt lív, og tað eru tær, sum vitna um meg” Jóh 5,39). Skriftirnar vitna um Jesus! Júst hesin sannleikin verður opinberaður fyri lærusveinunum, tá ið bæði Móses og Elia koma til sjóndar og samtala við Jesus hesa heilagu løtu uppi á fjallinum. Hjá Lukasi fáa vit eisini at vita, hvat teir samtalaðu um: “Og sí, tveir menn vóru í talu við hann, og tað vóru Móses og Elia; teir sýndu seg í dýrd og talaðu um burturferð hansara, sum hann skuldi fullføra í Jerúsalem” (Luk 9,30-31). Samtaluevnið snúði seg sostatt um tað, sum Jesus skuldi fullføra í Jerúsalem og uppi á krossinum, har ið hann jú, áðrenn hann gav upp andan, rópti: “Tað er fullgjørt!” (Jóh 19,30). Jesus kom inn í henda heim fyri at fullføra Guds frelsuætlan við tær og mær! Sostatt kunnu vit eisini siga, at Jesus, Móses og Elia samtalaðu um teg og meg har uppi á fjallinum. Jesu gerningur á krossinum snýr seg jú um teg og meg og okkara frelsu! Í undanfarna kapitlinum hjá Matteusi lesa vit um Kristusjáttan Pæturs: “Tú ert Kristus, sonur hins livandi Guðs” (Matt 16,16). Og vit lesa eisini, at Jesus frá teirri stund tók “...at sýna lærusveinum sínum, at hann átti at fara til Jerúsalem og útstanda nógv av teimum elstu og høvuðsprestunum og teimum skriftlærdu og at verða sligin í hel og á triðja degi at rísa upp aftur” (Matt 16,21). Hetta fataðu lærusveinarnir als ikki. Pætur tók enntá Jesus til síðis og segði við hann: “Náði teg Guð, Harri! Aldri veri tær hetta fyri!” (Matt 16,22). Pætur og hinir lærusveinarnir fingu ikki Jesu líðing at hanga saman við Jesu hátign. Ella sum vit syngja:   Dýrasti Jesus, drottur alla drotta, sonur av Guði og Mariu moy, teg vil eg elska, teg vil eg æra, tú lív mítt ert, mín dýri eyð'.   Vit kunnu einans tilbiðja Jesus og syngja um hann á henda hátt, tá ið vit við trúarinnar eygum síggja hann soleiðis, sum hann veruliga er: Dýrasti Jesus / drottur alla drotta! Og um vit við trúarinnar eygum síggja Jesus soleiðis, ja, tá verður Jesu afturkoma ikki ein ræðuligur dómadagur og ein myrkursins dagur fyri okkum. Nei, tá verður dagurin tvørturímóti ein sannur frelsudagur: Dagurin, tá ið vit ganga inn í hina ævigu dýrdina – dýrdina, sum Jesus hevur vunnið okkum við sínum blóði, tá ið hann setti seg sjálvan lágt og leið deyðan á krossinum í okkara stað. Tí kann Jesus eisini í dag nema við teg og meg, taka í okkara hond og siga: Óttast ikki! Lærusveinarnir óttaðust sjálvandi, tá ið teir vóru vitni til hesa stóru hending uppi á fjallinum. Teir fullu “fram eftir rommum og vórðu ógvuliga ræddir” (Matt 17,6). Og hvat annað kunnu syndafull menniskju gera í slíkum ljósi, har ið okkara egna myrkur verður so opinlýst? Uttan Frelsaran hava øll menniskju góða grund til at verða ógvuliga rædd fyri at møta hinum livandi Gudi. Tí, sum tað stendur í Hebrearabrævinum: “Guð okkara er oyðandi eldur” (Hebr 12,29). Hann er ein oyðandi eldur yvir fyri øllum órættvísi og allari synd! Tá syndarar eru vitni til Guds dýrd, er ræðsla sostatt náttúrlig. Sjálvur Jesus upplivdi eisini ræðslu í Getsemane, har ið Pætur, Jákup og Jóhannes eisini vóru við Jesusi: “Ótti og angist kom á hann. Og hann sigur við teir: “Sál mín er sorgarbundin heilt til deyða. Jú, hann visti, hvat hann skuldi uppliva á krossinum! Hann visti, at hann skuldi sjálvur ígjøgnum Guds oyðandi eld fyri at frelsa menniskju. Í lýdni og kærleika bað hann tí: “Tó ikki sum eg vil, men sum tú vilt.” Jesus er tann, sum Gud sjálvur sigur hann vera: “Hesin er sonur mín, hin elskaði, sum eg havi góðan tokka til” (Matt 17,5). Hesin sonurin, sum Gud hevur góðan tokka til, upplivdi sjálvur Guds oyðandi eld á krossinum fyri at frelsa menniskju frá hesum sama oyðandi eldi. Og í ljósinum frá Jesu fullgjørda verki á Golgata ljóðar nú ein gleðiboðskapur til syndarar: Um tú hevur Sonin, so hevur tú eisini alt við honum! Eftir at hava sæð Jesus í samtalu við Móses og Elia, sóu teir at enda “...ongan uttan Jesus einsamallan” (Matt 17,8). Soleiðis er tað eisini við frelsuni. Eingin uttan Jesus einsamallur kann frelsa okkum! Ella sum vit syngja:   Tú ert tann einasti, heilagsti, reinasti, gev mær títt reina og heilaga sinn! Hjálp tú úr vanda mær, bjarga frá grandi mær! Før meg at enda til dýrd tína inn!   Jesus er tann einasti, sum kann føra okkum inn í dýrdina! Við trúnni á hann er alt hansara nú vorðið okkara! Og alt okkara er vorðið hansara! Hann fær alla okkara synd, og vit fáa alla hansara dýrd! Og tey somu orðini, sum Gud sigur um sonin, sigur hann nú um teg og meg: Hetta er sonur mín, hin elskaði, sum eg havi góðan tokka til! Hetta er dóttir mín, hin elskaða, sum eg havi góðan tokka til! Við Jesusi gevur Gud okkum tað, sum hann, í sínum ríka kærleika, ætlaði okkum til: at hava barnakor hjá sær sjálvum! Tí talar hann nú um okkum, sum hann talar um sonin: Hetta er sonur mín! Hetta er dóttir mín! Hesin gleðiboðskapurin rekur allan ótta burtur og gevur okkum í staðin gleði í Harranum og eina livandi vón bæði í hesum lívi og í tí komandi, tá ið vit skulu njóta Guds dýrd í allar ævir og ganga í ljósi hansara! Hesi orð, sum standa undir altartalvuni (í Rituvík), og sum ein ørkymlaður Pætur segði á sinni, verða tá til ævigan veruleika fyri okkum: “Harri, tað er gott, at vit eru her!” (Matt 17,4).

С 2001 по 2013 год занимал должность профессора РЭШ и ЦЭФИР, с 2011 по 2013 год — пост проректора Российской Экономической Школы, в 2013 - 2015 проректора НИУ ВШЭ; после 2015 года - приглашенного профессора НИУ ВШЭ. Работы Константина Сонина публиковались в ведущих научных журналах по экономической и политической наукам. В 2011 году опубликовал книгу «Sonin.ru: уроки экономики», которая стала финалистом премии «Просветитель». В августе 2019 года вышло второе, дополненное издание «Когда кончится нефть и другие уроки экономики». Вел колонку в газете "Ведомости"/VTimes в 2004-2021 и писал для многих российских медиа. В 2020 году Константин Сонин награжден премией Егора Гайдара за выдающийся вклад в области экономики. В 2021 году получил награду American Economic Journal Best Paper Award в области прикладной экономики за исследование «Social Media and Corruption».
