How can wine grow in Arizona's changing climate?

Valley 101

Sonoita is one of three American Viticultural Areas in the state, and due to their higher elevation, they make excellent locations in the desert to grow wine. Unlike the greater Phoenix metro area, these parts of Arizona don't see triple-digit temperatures nearly every day in the summer and they also get a lot of rain. Arizona is home to more than 150 wineries now and small towns are dependent on them for tourism and economic boosts. So how are vintners adjusting to climate change in the desert and how is it impacting the wine industry overall? This week on Valley 101, a podcast by The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com about metro Phoenix and beyond, we take a look at how changing weather patterns are affecting wine growing and how Arizona can even grow it in the first place. Fresh from the DTC Conference and Unified Symposium, the guys sit down with two out-of-state winemakers who are making waves in their regions. Todd Bostock – Dos Cabezas WineWorks, Sonoita, Arizona Since 1995, Dos Cabezas WineWorks has been growing grapes and crafting wines in Southern Arizona. The winery and its 80 acres of vineyard were pioneered by the late visionary Al Buhl. Todd joined the team as winemaker in 2002, and by the end of 2006, the Bostock family took over operations. Dos Cabezas sources high-quality fruit from its two estate vineyards: Pronghorn Vineyard in Sonoita and Cimarron Vineyard in the Kansas Settlement. Curious about what grapes thrive in Arizona's unique climate? Todd shares his insight on growing and making wine in the desert. Dos Cabezas WineWorks - Website - Instagram Kent Foulker – Cedar Ridge Winery, Swisher, Iowa The Quint family has a long history of farming and distilling spirits, and in 2005, Jeff Quint founded Cedar Ridge with a mission to put Iowa bourbon on the map. As the first licensed distillery in Iowa since Prohibition, Cedar Ridge released its first batch of whiskey in 2010 and quickly became a leader in craft spirits. But Iowa isn't just about corn. Kent Foulker dives into what it takes to grow grapes and produce wine in the heart of the Midwest, and how Cedar Ridge balances both wine and whiskey under one roof. In a picturesque and historic home nestled on the edges of Sonoita, we had the pleasure of meeting our next guest, Tami Blakely. Her stunning property, complete with an expansive view and a pack of six Ridgebacks, set the stage for our conversation.Tami is a true Arizona native, hailing from a family with deep roots in the state—fifth generation, to be precise. Her family's journey began with the ownership of the only original general store in their area. Over time, they transitioned into the oil and gas industry, becoming prominent players in the Wickenburg, Arizona region as the state developed. Our introduction to Tami came through another guest on the show, Terri Malloy. We had the privilege of participating in a three-day equine therapy retreat at the Blakely Ranch, an experience that left a profound impact on us. Equine therapy, for those unfamiliar, is a powerful and transformative healing modality. It allows clients to communicate and connect with horses in profound ways, leading to personal growth and insights.Tami's role in this retreat was multi-faceted. First and foremost, she's a bona fide cowgirl, contributing a deep knowledge of equine interactions. Secondly, her coaching skills are top-notch, helping clients navigate their emotions and experiences during the therapy. The third, and perhaps most remarkable, attribute is her gift of sensing people's emotional states and the presence of things seen and unseen. Our conversation with Tami was nothing short of fascinating. She effortlessly responded to our questions, often revealing the answer before we finished reading them. Her personal story, while tragic and at times unimaginable in its hardships, has shaped her into the extraordinary person she is today. She's estranged from her family due to circumstances beyond her control, yet she's taken every life challenge and turned it into her life's purpose. Tami Blakely serves as a shining example of how to transform adversity into strength and purpose. It is SO impressive what The Boulder Crest Foundation and The Boulder Crest Institute are doing for our Combat Veterans to help them heal from traumas. Their work is groundbreaking and it's working! The focus is on the teachings of posttraumatic growth. Ken Falke, Founder & Chairman of Boulder Crest, is a 21-year combat veteran of the U.S. Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) community and retired Master Chief Petty Officer. He believes there's no greater mission than helping Veterans, first responders, and their families rediscover hope, purpose, and a future that is truly worth living. It's his passion. He spends the majority of his time educating the public and private sectors on the issues surrounding the long-term care of our returning military personnel and their families from the last 20 years of war. Ken is excited about the breakthrough success he's seeing at Boulder Crest, and says this is the coolest thing he's ever worked on and he's worked on some pretty cool things. Ken is highly respected around the world as an innovative and forward-thinking leader on the subjects of wounded warrior care, military and veteran transition, counterterrorism, military training, and innovative technology development. I'm so honored to be able to shine a light on Ken Falke and Boulder Crest this Veterans Day and every day. To help transform 'struggle to strength', Boulder Crest offers 2 peaceful locations for struggling veterans to come spend a week, spend quality time, be embraced, understood and heal. One location is in Bluemont, VA and the other in Sonoita, Arizona. Plus they offer many other programs across the country where those who are struggling can get the quality help they need to find the path to a life worth living. Their efforts are working. The Boulder Crest locations feature things like ADA-accessible cabins with plenty of amenities for comfort and for families to join in. Therapeutic and recreational activities like equine, archery, art, music, labyrinth walks, and fishing. And optional organized group activities, like barbecues and bonfires, which create opportunities for guests to connect with, and draw strength from, one another in what they've coined as a 'warrior's paradise'. The Boulder Crest Institute, located in Bluemont VA,  serves as the hub for the development, delivery, study, and scaling of their groundbreaking, Posttraumatic Growth-based programs. The Institute led the development of the Warrior PATHH curriculum, which is now delivered in nine locations across the country: Boulder Crest Virginia, Boulder Crest Arizona, Boulder Crest's Mobile Training Team, and through partnerships in Florida (GratitudeAmerica), Georgia (Camp Southern Ground), South Carolina (Big Red Barn Retreat), Maine (Travis Mills Foundation), Arkansas (Sheep Dog Impact Assistance), and Washington State (Permission to Start Dreaming Foundation). The Institute is also currently leading programs in Miami, Florida and Tucson, Arizona, to integrate Struggle Well Training and Posttraumatic Growth into their police departments. This project is made possible by the support of the FirstNet by AT&T, the Gary Sinise Foundation, and the Community-Police Relations Foundation. Since the Institute's opening in January 2018, Boeing has been an invaluable strategic partner and supporter, enabling them to develop and deliver training on Posttraumatic Growth for the mental health community. Ken Falke and Boulder Crest Institute Co-Founder & Exec. Dir. Josh Goldberg, also co-authored a book that's taken the mental health world by storm. It's called "Struggle Well: Thriving in the Aftermath of Trauma."  It's changing the lives of Veterans, First Responders and anyone who's been worn down by 'struggling'.  "Struggle" the authors say, "is the story of every great leader, every great man, and every great woman. Through encountering obstacles, heroes are tested and forged into becoming the great, authentic human beings they are destined to be." I love this quote on their website:  " It's time to learn how to struggle well. Because struggle is a terrible thing to waste." Ken Falke and Josh Goldberg, the authors of Struggle Well, have trained more than 40,000 people in the principles and practices of how to Struggle Well. Boulder Crest Foundation is doing amazing work and would love your support. Here's where you can find out more about them and donate. And if you want to meet a real hero please take a few minutes to meet Ken Falke, Founder & Chairman Boulder Crest Foundation, in this warm podcast conversation from The Debbie Nigro Show.  The world is a better place because of people like Ken Falke.

Hello Wine Enthusiasts Welcome to the Daily Taste for Tuesday May 10th, 2022If you listen to this podcast, you know that I am passionate about wine that's made all over the world.  I have spent the past two weeks talking about the great wines being made in Texas so I thought I would shift gears and talk about the emerging wine county in the state of AZ.  Living here in CA, I always picture AZ as a dessert with extremely hot temperatures and a lot of cacti.  What I didn't realize is that Arizona is home to more than 110 wineries, vineyards, and cellars. Arizona is home to three American Viticulture Areas or AVAs including Sonoita, Willcox, and the newest AVA The Verde Valley.  The Sonoita AVA sits at 4500 to 5200 feet elevation and was the first AVA in the state of AZ.  The Willcox AVA which produces the majority of wine grapes in AZ is located at 4000 – 5000 feet where the diurnal temperatures during the growing season can experience 50-degree fluctuations between day and night.  The Verde Valley AVA is the newest of AZ's AVAs, located in the center of the state.  The Verde Valley encompasses 219 square miles and includes 19 commercial vineyards farming more than 136 acres of wine grapes, and 25 tasting rooms.  You can find more than 40 wine grape varieties in the Verde Valley including white varieties Malvasia Bianca, Seyval Blanc, and Picpoul Blanc.  You can also see red varieties like Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Tannat, and Barbera.  The AZ wine country has its own set of challenges including monsoon season.  I did an interview with Adam Gingrich, winemaker at Oak Creek Winery located in the Verde Valley, and here is what he had to say about the challenges of Monsoon season. If you want to visit the AZ wine country, Adam recommends visits to the Verde Valley in Northern AZ where you can taste wines from all over the state and dine at some of the best restaurants in AZ.    Adam recommends you taste at places like Oak Creek Winery, Merkin Vineyards, Caduceus, Pillsbury, and Page Springs. Next time you are looking for a new wine to try, I recommend you go online and buy some of the great wines being made in AZ.      Finally, if you enjoy the content of this podcast, I encourage you to go to the show website at www.obsessedwithwine.net and click on the link at the top of the page called “Buy me a glass of wine”  Unfortunately it doesn't buy me any wine but it does give you the opportunity to donate to the show which helps me offset some of the costs of production.  Anything you can donate is greatly appreciated!

Welcome to The Best 5 Minute Wine Podcast. I'm your host Forrest Kelly from the seed to the glass. Wine has a past. Our aim at The Best 5 Minute Wine Podcast is to look for adventure at wineries around the globe. After all grape minds think alike. Let's start the adventure. Let's start the adventure. Our featured winery is we return to Elgin, Arizona, for part two of our interview with https://www.callaghanvineyards.com/ (Kent Callaghan Vineyards). Some of the events that they put on at the winery is a library tasting where they share a library worth of wines and they take you to a behind the scenes special event. You get to sample wines from their earliest vintages back when they started in early 1990 to the wines that they are producing now. So you get to compare the two. I think it's interesting for them to see, you know, the library historical data to see how the wines age, what's done well, you know, and how these images are different, because we definitely have vintage variation in Arizona in general, and particularly in Sonoita, the monsoon rainfall that we would get. So when you've been working with the vines for close to 30 years, as Kent has, you tend to get recognized in the wine industry with some awards, most recently a governor's dinner in 2017 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Francisco_Chronicle (San Francisco Chronicle), probably a competition that people in California can relate to. And we got Pinot 19 in competition got Best of Class. Got the craft in the last competition and 2020 launches happen in January. Man, I have been there a white one best of class. So they tend to do pretty well in the competition. If you'd like to inquire more about what's going on with the events or even visit the winery in Elgin, Arizona, at Callaghan Vineyards, how can people get a hold of you can go to the website https://www.callaghanvineyards.com/ (Callaghanvineyards.com) All right. Thank you very much for your time. It has been very enlightening. Yeah. Thanks for us. Thank you. It is time now for our listener voicemail question. My name is Jolene Erickson and I'm from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flagstaff,_Arizona (Flagstaff, Arizona). And I was wondering when making wine do you have to have seedless grapes? If you could answer that question. That would be awesome. Thank you. No, you do not have to use seedless grapes. However, there is a difference between wine grapes and table grapes. There are over a thousand different varieties of grapes made for winemaking. They've converged them over the years. Plus, wine grapes have a very thick skin, unlike the table grape, which has a very thin skin. So it's easy to eat and the differences go on and on. That's what makes winemaking so intriguing. The layers are endless. Thank you for listening. I'm Forrest Kelly. This episode of The Best 5 Minute Wine Podcast was produced by IHYSM. Our featured winery is: We venture to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arizona (Arizona). Callaghan Vineyards. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arizona_wine (Dr. Gordon Dutt), doing some research for a project that he was working on, was surprised to find that there were no wineries in the state, even though the soil composition was similar to Burgundy France after some funding. The wine business was born in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elgin,_Arizona (Elgin, Arizona). The state of Arizona has over 100 wineries, but in a particular area, we're talking about is fifteen, including Kent, Callaghan Vineyards. So we go back to summertime 1990, Ken's parents decide to start the vineyards along with Kent. But Mother Nature didn't exactly greet him with open arms. Well, we planted in the middle of a heatwave. It was the first time, as far as I know, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenix_Sky_Harbor_International_Airport (Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix) had shut down. Think it was 122 for a couple of days. It was 105 here in Elgin. So we lost a lot of our plantings right off the bat in Cabernet, which was about 9000 of those vines to us, probably twenty-five hundred. It's going to be all that hard work. Then to see those vines die because of the extreme heat, you probably wonder whose idea was this anyway? It was my dad's idea. He had been a real home winemaker, so they thought this parcel man asked me to come on to help them plant the starting point of entry and start a winery. I was right out of college at that point, basically. So you graduate from college. Where did you to college? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pomona_College#Athletics (Pomona in Claremont). Okay. In Southern California. And graduated with a degree in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philosophy (philosophy). So from that to the current time, you've been doing this. What? Let's say you do the math. You're a little over 30 years. Yeah, 30 years. 30 of vintage this year and then 31st first year growing. How big is pruning into the success of a vineyard? It's huge. In my opinion, the single most important thing that you do if I had to rank them. Why is it so critical? Well, It sets the stage for basically everything else. If you prune correctly, you know, you're just setting yourself up for success the vine architecture, the way the vine grows is going to give you hope what you know, he's intending to get with less need for inputs, particularly manual input. Without getting too philosophical, how would you describe your vineyard, your winery? We're not looking for a huge crop. I think we're looking for quality fruit. It's the whole focus on what we do. Are you one of the bigger wineries? Biggest acreage, one of the smaller wineries. Our output is not particularly large. We're probably the third our fourth-largest, something like that out of fifteen. Yeah, well, I was the whole goal from the start was never to be a large operation, but a quality one. It's a winery. What are you most proud of? I mean, just enjoy it. I guess we're best known for. We're still experimenting. I mean, it's been quite a long journey in trying to figure out what varieties grow best and not only in Sonoita, where we are specifically on our specific site. And that is something that's still ongoing. It's been fun and somewhat now. I'm consuming, obviously, but mostly rewarding. Otherwise, you're not just our own, but for the folks that are consumers that enjoy our wine. I think it's interesting for them to see, you know, the library historical data to see how the wines age, what's done well, you know, and how the vintage is different are different because we definitely have vintage variation in Arizona in...
