Out of the Welsh valleys and now at home in Manchester, Rikki Humphrey has been hosting radio shows on KMAH and Reform Radio and just kicked off a new residency on the city's NTS channel. DJing all over the country and across Europe and South America, Rikki has supported a gamut of wide-ranging jocks including Space Dimension Controller, Italojohnson, Tornado Wallace, Bicep, Xosar, Hunee and many more, and he still finds time to fulfill a residency at TEAK in Cardiff. He's pretty new to us, so we asked him to pull a set together, answer a few q's, and shine a light on what he is all about.

Space Dimension Controller’s music is as obsessed with sci-fi themes as the man himself. His latest album—Orange Melamine on Ninja Tune—is another ode to hazy ambient sounds, cosmic energies and colourful soundscapes which proves that once more. It was written in a teenage Jack Hamill’s bedroom and is a thoroughly absorbing affair as indebted to Eno as it is to Boards of Canada. Before that he has released conceptual albums like Welcome to Mikrosektor-50 as well as plenty of other EPs on R&S and Clone Royal Oak, all with decidedly intergalactic bents. Over the course of three hours here, Hamill really stretches his legs and shows us many different sides. There are, as expected, cosmic and deep space overtones early on, but also a love of playful melodic house, disco jams and party starting anthems also shines through. This, then, is a shapeshifting selection that twists and turns and keeps you on your toes throughout.

We catch up with Berlin residents Max Graef & Glenn Astro to talk about the release of their debut album The Yard Work Simulator, out now on Ninja Tune. We discuss their early experiences with music, growing up in Essen and Berlin respectively, how it was that they ended up working together and the processes that want into the making of the album. As is to be expected from two avid music collectors, we are treated along the way with an eclectic selection of tracks, taking in music from The Roots, Breakout, Pete Dunaway, Underground Resistance and Creative Source. We finish with some new music from the Ninja Tune stables with tracks from Space Dimension Controller, Machinedrum, The Invisible, The Bug and Sarathy Korwar.

Beaumont, aka Michael Rintoul, is a young Scottish producer and creator of hypnotic R&B dream pop-soundtracks for late night bliss-outs. His unique and immensely addictive debut EP “Blush Response” was recently released on Boxcuttters' Kinnego imprint and is well... one of the best EP's we've heard in a while. This is the label that introduced Space Dimension Controller to the world back in 2009 and with only 4 titles to it's name it's obvious label honcho Boxcutter is all about quality over quantity. Still getting some heavy plays in the Wild City office, “Blush Response” is a wistful night-time groove from start to finish. Tracks such as “Tokyo” and “Lucky” sound like dubstep as made on a Fairlight in 1982, full of emotion and breathless invocations. The most overtly vocal track, “Midnight” seems to reference 80s Marvin Gaye with its drum machine and electronic piano palette and lovelorn emotional delivery. Recalling a more minimal Eurythmics, “Flesh + Blood” blends guitars and synthesized cellos into a desirous, heartbroken pop song for hopeless romantics. As we took a trip through Beaumont's record collection on this one, we were simply blown away by the selection. Featuring artists like Kraftwerk and Michhel Rubini, through to the UK sounds of Silkie and Jamie XX - Think moody, 80's, R&B, bass, dubstep, sci-fi, chillwave and everything in between.
