POPULARITY
Today we're delighted to welcome Spencer Owen, Founder & Owner of the iconic Hashtag United, to the show. This is one of the most unique organisations in football. Why? Well it was founded on the internet before becoming a successful men's and women's team competing in English football. Spencer, or Spencer FC as many of his fans know him, built one of the strongest online brands in football, with over 2m YouTube subscribers regularly engaging with his channel. When he decided to take Hashtag from online concept to physical sports asset, unsurprisingly it was met with confusion and ridicule by an industry not known for it's acceptance and embrace of change. As a result, this show is one of most interesting assessments of both what makes football so great, and where there are major opportunities for change. It's a very different take on the football owner and executive shows we're used to, and that's why we love it. This is sport for a modern age, packaged in a conversation explaining how a club that has more subscribers than many Premier League clubs has created a new blueprint for team ownership and management. On today's show we discuss: SpencerFC to Club Owner: What was the first step in becoming one of the most famous football ‘influencer/streamer' and how did that lay the foundations for Hashtag United? This is a club born on the internet; from creating a community online to turning those fans into active sports goers. Influencer driven sport has become a far more recognised phenomenon, but what was it like in the early days taking creators into real life football matches? This is reverse engineering a football club; why building a fanbase before they had an on-field product has given Hashtag a unique opportunity Business of Hashtag “We are at our heart an advertising business when you think about how we make money” Playing in the 7th tier of English football does not deliver big revenue, so what have Hashtag done to make themselves so commercially attractive. How not owning their own stadium is an issue they are looking to resolve and why a physical home for their broad fanbase will elevate the team's identity. Raising money is next on the agenda but what type of people is Spencer looking to bring into the ownership group? “We are the opposite of Wrexham” Dealing with Criticism… How naming the team Hashtag United created an unforeseen issue yet remains one of the most important things about the club. Is there a problem with creating a model dependent on views more than results? The story of how the club has used broader issues and opportunities in women's football to create a really successful team. The 3pm blackout and the issues that it hides…? It doesn't make financial sense to be promoted in non-league football! What does Spencer mean by this? 8000 Promises: Saying Yes to God's Promises for your one beautiful and precious life.
Spencer Owen was born and raised in central Illinois and went to college at Huntington University near Ft. Wayne, Indiana. While there, he discovered his passion for helping people heal from their psychological hurts; after he graduated he went to University of Colorado in Colorado Springs for his Master's degree in counseling and human development. He started out as a school counselor, working first with elementary-age students and then later with middle-school ages. During the latter half of that time, he was working after hours as a counselor to gain his licensure status. When he achieved that, he left the education system and started working in a group counseling practice specializing in adolescents and couples. Last June, he opened up his own solo private practice -- Renewed Life Counseling -- and has since gained additional certification in working with trauma. Now, he operates his private practice in Colorado Springs, specializing in using innovative and integrative counseling techniques to help people heal from trauma of all kinds but particularly in the areas of spiritual trauma and religious abuse. Content warning: Topics of spiritual trauma, religious abuse and reference to recovery from the impact of childhood sexual abuse. This special episode features a discussion about sacrifice and atonement, featuring Spencer Owen, Phil Bray, Troy Yurchak, and Joshua Sherman. This discussion is a response to the recent Bible Project episodes on Atonement and Burnt Offerings, as part of their overview of the Leviticus scroll. Here, we hope to bring additional context to the discussion, that can help people approach the Atonement, especially. For those that haven't listened to the Bible Project episodes yet, we'd like to recommend listening to this discussion, then listening to their episode on Burnt Offerings first, then their episode on Atonement.https://bibleproject.com/podcast/what-did-burnt-offerings-really-mean/ https://bibleproject.com/podcast/what-atonement/ Additional ResourcesFor more helpful resources on Sacrifices and Atonement, we'd recommend checking out the following books and podcasts. Each of them comes at this question from a slightly different point-of-view. For those that really want to dig into the topic, and be prepared to discuss it in detail, it can be very helpful to understand multiple points of view, to both inform our own view, and to enable more effective engagement with those that hold a different view.Books - Jacob Milgrom, "Leviticus" (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001I460LK/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_hsch_vapi_tkin_p1_i1)- L. While you've been working hard, a glass of merlot in one hand, a block of brie in the other, we at Footballland have been preparing for the opening of Footballland in just 336 days time. And we were delighted to have the CEO of Hashtag United Spencer Owen in the Wayne Lineker testicle. Spencer created a football team from scratch so he's no stranger to impossible dreams. And he loves theme parks, apart from that time he won a night in the Alton Towers Chocolate room and they'd run out of chocolate. So here are the 3 (three) new rides we've designed this week! Elf-Inge The City Ryan reads out a lovely Christmas story featuring Roy Keane and a young Norwegian lad who looks a bit like a deflated sex doll. And THAT story forms the basis of Footballland's brand new ice show at the Squeaky Bum Time Arena! Are your seats too far from the pitch? Then simply watch it in miniature on Harry Maguire's forehead! Get Your Kit On Mark is so angry with substitutes who aren't ready to come onto the field because they've not put on their shirt, that he's created a new experience in which naked members of the public are placed on a vibrating platform and given one minute to put their clothes on before being beamed live on TV across the world. Spencer Owen's Futuroscope NOT to be confused with the theme park in France with the same name, Spencer Owen proposes a VR football simulator where guests run about on a 360 degree treadmill like in Ready Player One. Will we finally get Lionel Messi playing a wet tuesday night in Stoke? And as ever, send us your ride ideas! We feature all of 'em!
