POPULARITY
25 years ago, Atlanta pop/R&B royals Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, Lisa "Left-Eye" Lopes, and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas rose through the (literal) ashes of controversy and scandal to release one of the best-selling and best-loved R&B albums of the decade. In this special episode, the SSN Crew, and special guest Tim from the Kuroverse Corporation, do a track-by-track retrospective on TLC's sophomore album, "Crazysexycool." We cover behind-the-scenes stories, the group's origins (and its forgotten original "C", Crystal Jones), and how indeed you can sell ten million records and go broke the same year. Plus: reviews of the latest installment of "Watchmen" and Martin Scorsese's "The Irishman," a breakdown of Byron Allen's lawsuits against Comcast and Charter, Mo'Nique suing Netflix, and Elizabeth Banks' "Charlie's Angels" failing to take flight. Say Something Nice Podcast - Film, TV, and Music News & Discussion
In this episode, the SSN Crew indulges in two big discussions about two very different films celebrating anniversaries with new productions. First up, we discuss Stephen King's classic horror novel "The Shining," the subject of a classic film celebrating its 40th anniversary with a sequel, "Doctor Sleep." Can this new entry following an adult Dann Torrence mentoring a Black teenage girl live up to the legacy of the Stanley Kubrick classic? Then, we dive back in time again - and under the sea - to explore the dawn of the Disney Renaissance with the making of "The Little Mermaid." That film celebrated its 30th anniversary with a special ABC-TV screening of the animated musical featuring live-on-stage performances of its songs. How'd that work out for them? All this, plus a follow-up review of "Bigger" on BET+, reviews of "The Good Liar", HBO's "Watchmen", a discussion of what Paramount can/will do now that "Terminator: Dark Fate" and "Gemini Man" have flopped, and more - including a preview of a potential spin-off show, "Say Something Sexy!" SHOW NOTES: 0:00:00: Say Something Real: Reviews ◦ Doctor Sleep (Film, 2019) - no spoilers! ◦ Love Jones (Film, 1997) ◦ Sparkle (Film, 1976) ◦ Bigger (TV, Season 1, BET+) ◦ Popeye the Sailor, The 1940s: Vol. 3 (Short films, 1948-1949) ◦ Riverdale (TV, The CW) ◦ The Good Liar (Film, 2019) ◦ Deon Cole: Cole Hearted (TV comedy special, Netflix) ◦ The Blacklist (TV, NBC) ◦ Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? A long time ago (last week), in a galaxy far, far away (Burbank), a media conglomerate announced a sprawling new steaming platform full of some of their most popular movies and TV shows, as well as new productions. No, it isn't Disney - it's Warner Bros., and, unlike with the Mouse House, there's far more hurdles to overcome. Can HBO Max overcome branding issues and a high monthly price to make new "Green Lantern." "Boondocks," and "Little Ellen" (!) productions successes? In this episode, the SSN Crew discusses HBO Max's content presentation, as well as Lori Loughlin staring down the barrel of a 50 year prison sentence, the Internet's best friends - "Game of Thrones" show runners David Benioff & D.B. Weiss - departing Star Wars for Netflix, and more bonus discussion on Eddie Murphy's "Dolemite is My Name!" The SSN Crew returns to discuss two very different new movies featuring Black actors. First up is "Harriet," the hotly-debated biopic about Black American hero Harriet Tubman embroiled in multiple controversies, some reasonable, some blatant lies. Does the movie do justice to our legend, or is it a white savior movie featuring an implausible interracial love story? Or...is it neither? Then, we review Eddie Murphy's return to form in "Dolemite is My Name," with its look at the making of a blaxploitation classic and star turns for Wesley Snipes, Keegan-Michael Key, Tituss Burgess, Mike Epps, a heavily wigged T.I., and Da'Vine Joy Randolph. Plus, reviews of the first two episodes of HBO's new "Watchmen" series, the BET+ streaming show "Bigger," Taika Watiti's Oscar-bait Nazi dramedy "Jojo Rabbit," and Tyler Perry's new BET shows "The Oval" and "Sistas". SHOW NOTES: 0:00:00: Pre-Show 0:04:52: Say Something Real: Reviews ◦ Harriet (Film, 2019) Non-Spoiler Discussion & Twitter controversy (SPOILERS from 17:13 to 30:47) ◦ Hairspray (Film, 2007) ◦ Noah's Arc (TV, Logo) ◦ The Boys (TV, Amazon Prime) ◦ Jojo Rabbit (Film, 2019) ◦ Dolemite is My Name (Film, 2019) ◦ Watchmen (TV, HBO) ◦ Batwoman (TV, CW) ◦ Isn't It Romantic (Film, 2019) ◦ Bigger (TV, BET+) ◦ The Oval (TV, BET) ◦ Sistas (TV, BET) ◦ Carnival Row (TV, Amazon Prime) ◦ Titans (TV, DC Universe) WHERE TO FIND OUR SHOW: Come join our Facebook group: http://ssnpodcast.com/fbgroup Want to help support the show? Are two Wills better than one? The SSN Crew and special guest Tammy aka Cowkitty review Ang Lee's latest experiment with high-frame rate filmmaking. Unlike with his previous "Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk," this time Mr. Lee has a secret weapon: Will Smith! Was seeing Fresh Prince vs. Fresh Prince worth watching in (*deep breath*) Dolby Cinema 3D at 120 frames per second, or is it not much more than an action-heavy telenovela? Also, did Jason Weaver make a mistake by taking royalties instead of a $2 million lump sum for singing the songs in the original "Lion King?" All this and more within! In celebration of the 60th anniversary of the history-making and groundbreaking Motown Records, and following the premiere of the new documentary "Hitsville: The History of Motown," the SSN Crew is joined by an all-star panel of guests - Carolyn from The C-Dubb Show, Greg aka tREBLEFREE, and Yusuf Lamont - for a comprehensive dive into the histories of Berry Gordy, Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross & the Supremes, Gladys Knight & the Pips, The Temptations, Rick James, DeBarge, Boyz II Men, Erykah Badu, and...the Migos?! How did Motown create the template for crossover success for African-American artists - and what implications, good and bad, did that have in the past and the present? Does "Dreamgirls" tarnish the legacy of The Supremes' Florence Ballard in its appropriation of her tragic story? And who are the producers, songwriters, musicians, and session singers who kept the Motown machine running? Roger Allers & Rob Minkoff's seminal animated film, "The Lion King," represented the pinnacle of success for traditional Disney animation...and the beginning of its downfall. Twenty-five years and numerous regime turnovers later, the Disney corporation has remade "The Lion King" under the direction of "Iron Man's" Jon Favreau. Marketed strangely as a "live action" remake, it is a scene-by-scene (and almost shot-by-shot) rehash animated with photorealistic CGI animals and environments. Can the new version hold a candle to the old? How did the original "Lion King" manage to both break box office records and plant the seeds for the death of American traditional (hand-drawn) animation? In this episode, the SSN Crew and special guest Stephanie of the Mocha Minutes Podcast answer these questions and more, including a revisiting of the short-lived feature animation studios that sprang up in "Lion King's" wake, how both versions of the film deal with their celebrity voice castings, and what the future of the Disney "live action" remakes could look like, for better or worse.
