Candace A. Gray (aka Candy Fox) was born and raised in Memphis and has always lived a double life. She's a Gemini and she's always operated well in both left and right brain spaces. Candace's mother (RIP) always told her to never rely on ONE thing to sustain you...and that concept has remained with her since high school! Candace is marketing and communications professional by day...and a singer/songwriter by night (hence the stage name Candy Fox). She sings mostly Soul Music, which is native to Memphis. And as the Founder and CEO of CG Comms Group, Candace serves several local clients who make Memphis what it is from cultural, economic and artistic perspectives. Throughout her communications career, Candace has worked in the private (archer malmo, inc.) and public (FedEx) sector, for-profit and non-profit (Freedom Prep Charter Schools). In true Memphis spirit, she started my own full-service, boutique communications agency, DURING THE PANDEMIC! And she's seen much success, as a result of a great work ethic and referrals! Throughout her music career, Candy Fox has sung with some of the best in the business, from R&B and Soul to Blues to Gospel, to Hip Hop, including 8Ball & MJG, Al Kapone, Charrelle & Alexander O'Neal, Howard Hewett and Shalamar, Jennifer Holliday, Richard Smallwood, Kurt Carr, Chico DeBarge, The Legendary Barkays, and the list goes on. Candy Fox also released her own project, Soul Stir, independently after leaving the Hip Hop collective Free Sol, who won the Mid-South Grammy Showcase in 2004 and released the album 11:11 on Memphis Records. Soul Stir, a true work of art, is available on all electronic platforms. Somewhere in betwixt all of that, Candace found time to get married to her wonderful partner and bring life into this world, in the form of a son, at the age of 41! She's also a dog mom, and her little family currently resides in Memphis. Candace is the epitome of Memphis. She makes things happen, as opposed to waiting for them to happen. And she's just getting started! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/farah-bernier/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/farah-bernier/support

Khoree 'The Poet' is a Contemporary Spoken Word/R&B Artist who delivers clever, thought-provoking, mesmerizing poems with silky smooth music that leaves his listeners applauding, talking, laughing, and gasping while his eloquent words take them on an exciting and unique lyrical journey. Khoree's poems are about uplifting, empowering, and encouraging women to not give up on love and/or hope. His sensual style and delivery is fused with Jazz/R&B instrumental elements, accompanied by smooth background vocals. Khoree is creating quite a stir with his deep Barry White toned voice, blended with an aggressive Teddy Pendergrass attitude and style of poetry setting him apart from other poets in the entertainment industry, and several promoters are taking notice. Excuse our lateness of the hour on this one family, yours truly was running behind. And, just when I thought we were off to the races, guess who decides to crash the party, for all of 15 minutes? You guessed it, our brother The Maestro. We had a conversation about, of all things, the triangle and how it's played an integral part in popular music. We chose 3 iconic r&b classics, (Hurry Up This Way Again by The Stylistics, Send One Your Love by Stevie Wonder, and Inner City Blues from Marvin Gaye), emphasized on how the "ting" from the triangle was/still is iconic. We had a great time before he had to get back to work himself. LOL. Anyways, onward with the show. We got it in with some new music from Ronnie Wright, classics from Chico DeBarge, Jamiroquai, The Bar Kays, Brass Construction, and the list goes on and on. I appreciated the support and engagement you guys give me. The second slow mix of this week happened because you guys shared so many songs that I couldn't fit them all in one mix :-) My friend "Jenny" got on a roll and sent me some songs I truly hadn't listened to in years and I felt I owed it to you guys to share. We have "Love Is Contagious" by Taja Sevelle, "Iggn' Me" by Chico Debarge, " Nice & Slow" by Usher and to end it all on an aspirational note "Dreams" by Boyz II Men. Enjoy, Dj Shizz

Howard alum and industry veteran Shante Paige takes a walk down memory lane with Ed, talk about six degrees of separation. Shante has been an active member in the music business for decades...at one time during her reign, she served as the Vice-President of A&R for the Universal/Motown Records Group, she was responsible for controlling multi-million dollar budgets. She was also the Executive Producer and handled the production of Hip Hop and R&B headliners such as 702, Dave Hollister, KEM, Chico Debarge, India Arie, Erykah Badu, Remy Shand, Cash Money Millionaires, Pastor Troy, Lil Corey, The Temptations, and Joe. During her tenure at Motown, these artists sold more than 65 million albums collectively worldwide, putting Motown in the black after a decade of losses. These are only a few, of the many, MANY hats Ms. Paige has worn, and we were blessed to have her in studio. Now, she's thriving as the EP and creator of Atlanta-based strip-club hit "Beyond The Pole" television series.
Jessica Jolia is an American recording artist, songwriter, musician and educator. Her debut single "Sometimes" was independently released and featured in the 2015 film Sister Code starring Amber Rose, Eva Marcille and Drew Sidora, and later featured on Spotify's Top Tracks of 2016 "Fire Emoji" curated playlist. Jessica has since performed on The Ellen Show and The Late Late Show, and has been featured in The Source, This Is RnB, The A&R Report, Rolling Soul Brazil and many other publications around the world. Jessica is also featured on Lin Rountree’s 2018 single “Something More” from the album Stronger Still. The song tells of a love that is meaningful in many ways, yet lacks that special kind of magic we often crave. Penning the only vocal track on the album, she is also credited as vocal producer and recording engineer. Jessica has had the pleasure of recording, performing and touring with many award-winning artists including Dr. Dre, Rita Ora, Meghan Trainor, Iggy Azalea, The Chainsmokers, Bryce Vine, Goapele, Eric Benet, Faith Evans, Earth Wind & Fire, Jeffrey Osborne, Karyn White, Chico DeBarge, Alexander O'Neal, Smokey Robinson, Lyle Lovett, Kenny Lattimore, Johnny Gill, New Edition and Kelly Price. Her music is a reflection of her personal and professional experiences and travels, unified by an underlying theme of vulnerability, strength and love.
This week we're discussing one half one tenth of the DeBarge family discography, because Chico's two '80s albums were pretty damn fantastic.

Born in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn in the late seventies Lyonel “Kay-Kay” Rosemond was exposed at an early age to a cultural melting pot that would eventually shape his view of life. He fondly remembers being enamored with the soul singers of the 70’s, which included Marvin Gaye, Al Green and Otis Redding. At an early age he decided that he would pursue a career as an artist for his favorite comic book company, Marvel Comics. Lyonel soon enrolled in a school for cartoon illustration and shortly after began receiving requests from friends who needed logos for the companies many of them hoped to form. In 1994, however Lyonel began to see his career path change course after he was contacted by his Uncle Jimmy Henchman Rosemond who was already well known in music industry circles, and was about to start his own management company. It was at this time that Lyonel realized that the music business was in fact business first, and he began to actively increase his contacts by making a conscious attempt to mingle with those that would become his peers. His hard work paid off, when in Kedar he was offered a job to work in the A&R department at the historic record label Motown. Since joining the Motown family Lyonel has worked with a bevy of artists including Erykah Badu, Chico DeBarge, Lil’ Wayne, The Tempttations and R&B crooner Joe. He feels that his work with Badu was the most special because of the authentic approach she took to developing her music.
0:55: Chris Brown announces double album with 40 new songs 4:30: TLC's new album cover 10:00: New single releases Marsha Ambrosius, Goapele and En Vogue 14:35: Upcoming albums from LeToya Luckett and Faith Evans 24:10: Legends in R&B that would struggle in 2017 based on physical appearance 33:40: R&B Hall Of Fame nominations: Destiny's Child and Monica 56:10: Love Letter feature 1:00:00: #AskYKIGS We're back on track with episode #51. We start off the podcast by talking about the news that Chris Brown's upcoming album "Heartbreak On A Full Moon" is going to contain 40 songs. One of the songs is called "Juicy Booty" which has everyone excited. We also talk about his documentary "Welcome To My Life" which will be playing in theaters all over the country on June 8th. Afterwards we talk about the new TLC album as they recently showed the tracklist for it. They also posted the album cover for the album which looks like a combination of bubblegum wrappers and Popsicle sticks. Then we talk about upcoming releases in R&B from the likes of Marsha, Goapele and LeToya. For our main discussion, we talk about the standards of music in 2017 and which R&B legends wouldn't make the cut if they debuted today. Some names included Boyz II Men, Robin Thicke and Chico DeBarge. For our hall of fame, we try to figure out if Destiny's Child and Monica should be inducted. The conversation gets extremely heated as some people don't believe Destiny's Child deserves to be in the hall of fame. Monica gets some heat as well, but you'll have to tune into the podcast to find out what happens. For our newest feature, we analyze Donnell Jones' classic song "Where I Wanna Be" and how flawed the lyrics are. We also answer questions from some of our readers. Check out the latest episode of our podcast!
Don Adams – once described as being “cool as a fan” is a New Jersey transplant who now resides in Nashville Tennessee. He says he moved to Nashville because of the raw talent and musicianship he discovered while visiting there for a weekend to work on a CD project with a friend. With the bass as his primary instrument, Don has accompanied an array of artists including: the late Charles Earland, the late Miles Davis, the late Billie Paul, Sarah Dash, Danny and the Juniors, Taylor Dane, Chaka Khan and Chico DeBarge to name a few. In more recent years Don has accompanied artist, including Gary Jenkins (Silk), Marion Meadows, Jakiem Joyner, Jeff Lorber, Joe Wooten, Jessy J, Alex Bugnon and Bobby Rush. In December of 2003 Don founded the Don Adams Band based out of Nashville. The band is still one of the hottest tickets around. Also that year, Don received the Marion James Award as Nashville's Bassist of the Year. Lorenzo Washington, Producer and CEO of Jefferson Street Sound sought to revive the Jefferson Street music scene that had been relegated to history books, museum exhibits and stories told by those reminiscing the rhythm and blues, soul, rock and jazz music that emanated from the Nashville's Jefferson Street scene.Washington turned to Don Adams to write, produce and record the label's first full-length debut under the name the Don Adams Band. The label's first release is a collection of R&B-infused jazz songs by the Don Adams Band modestly titled “Caution: May Cause Passion.” Adams describes the music on “Caution: May Cause Passion” released October 2013, as “borrowing elements from jazz, R&B and soul. We make the music and the listeners/fans decided whether it is good or not.” Music is available through online retailers.

Can Kornflake see all the costumes, collectibles, and celebrity guests at Super Megafest in just ninety minutes, and not be late for karaoke? Let's find out. We did indeed find plenty of crazy characters there, including our friends from Rubber Chicken Comics and Wicked Geeky, costumer R. W. Martin (as Doc from The Love Boat!), and our old pal Mr. T. We also ran into stars like Lee Meriwether (Catwoman!), Michael Beck (The Warriors! And Xanadu!), and William Zabka (Cobra Kai!). And we even attended a Q&A session with Burt Reynolds, because we still have a lot to learn about early 80s mustaches. Also: Steve Martin and Martin Short (two amigos, approximately) come to Boston, Kornflake is the Chico DeBarge of poetry, and lobsters are the new cows.

In 1994, Kay began to see his career path change course after his Uncle Jimmy Henchman Rosemond, who was about to start his own management company, called him. Once entering the music industry Kay realized that art was not his only talent, as he quickly adapted to the scene and learned what something he feels very few comprehend – artists don’t live what they portray. It was at this time that Kay realized that the music business was in fact business first, and he began to actively increase his contacts. He was offered a job to work in the A&R department at the historic record label Motown while he was at Kedar Entertainment. Kay worked with a bevy of artists including Erykah Badu, Chico DeBarge, Lil’ Wayne, The Temptations and Joe. Kay-Kay is currently running his own music group. From his early work with Big L, Nas to more recent work with Nicki Minaj, Busta Rhymes, Jim Jones, the producer-turned-artist has made his mark on Hip Hop and Top 40 music across the board. In 2010, Ron Browz released the Etherlibrium street album exclusively on iTunes via his own Ether Boy Records. The 16-track project included cameos from Maino, Red Café, J.R. Writer, with all production handled by Ron. Influenced by the sounds of DJ Premier, Dr. Dre, and Havoc, Ron Browz’s first big break came in 2000 when he produced four songs on the late Big L’s album, The Big Picture, including the classic track “Ebonics.” Big L taught Ron about the music business, and exposed him to a new network of contacts. Ron Browz soon found himself in an official deal with Universal Republic. By early 2010, a date was set for Ron’s major label debut album, however Browz opted out of his deal.

Born in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn Lyonel “Kay-Kay” Rosemond fondly remembers being enamored with the soul singers of the 70’s, which included Marvin Gaye, Al Green and Otis Redding. However, he would soon become entrenched in the hip-hop scene that was beginning to take over during his adolescence. At the time, little did he know that these musical influences would have a great deal to do with the career he ultimately chose as an A&R with Motown/Universal Music Group. At an early age he decided that he would pursue a career as an artist for his favorite comic book company, Marvel Comics. Lyonel soon enrolled in a school for cartoon illustration and shortly after began receiving requests from friends who needed logos for the companies many of them hoped to form. In 1994, however Lyonel began to see his career path change course after his Uncle Jimmy Henchman Rosemond, who was about to start his own management company, called him. Once entering the music industry Lyonel realized that art was not his only talent, as he quickly adapted to the scene and learned what something he feels very few comprehend – artists don’t live what they portray. It was at this time that Lyonel realized that the music business was in fact business first, and he began to actively increase his contacts. He was offered a job to work in the A&R department at the historic record label Motown while he was at Kedar Entertainment. Since joining the Motown family Lyonel has worked with a bevy of artists including Erykah Badu, Chico DeBarge, Lil’ Wayne, The Temptations and R&B crooner Joe. He feels that his work with Badu was the most special because of the authentic approach she took to developing her music. Kay-Kay is currently the A&R at E1/Koch Records.
In- Depth Interview with Singer -Songwriter Chico Debarge . Chico got his first record deal with Motown Records in the mid-1980s. He became a full-throated soul singer whose lyrics tended toward raw sensuality and toward serious reflections on the temptations of the street life. Hour 2 -In-Depth Interview with Rosie Gaines Multi-instrumentalist, Producer/Song writer Rosie Gaines is the youngest of 10 children. Her first band was a family funk soul group called Unity, with Rosie on organ, her brother Carl on bass, her cousin Lacy on guitar, sister-in-law Dianne on background vocals and her sister Mal on drums
Born on Valentine’s Day, this Arizona-born songstress, songwriter & producer had sounds of soul music flowing through her veins at an early age. While voice training in those days started at her grandmother’s church, her professional singing career began as a child when she was chosen to sing background vocals for the legendary Jeffrey Osborne, and for the Rock Band Yes. The former beauty pageant winner decided long ago that music was her true passion and has set her sights on her dream ever since. While studying classical voice at Howard University, Tobin gained stage experiences performing with the school’s Chorale in which during President Clinton’s Inaugural Gala on the National Mall, performing background for Diana Ross, Whitley Phipps, and shared the stage with Patti LaBelle, Luther Vandross, Shai and many others. Having performed demos and background vocals for artists such as Joe, Chico DeBarge, Coolio, Chante Moore, Korea-based Uptown, Coco Lee and Mica Paris has prepared her for her moment to shine as a solo artist. Although most of her influences are male singers like Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross, Marvin Gaye, Prince, and Donny Hathaway, Tobin is reminiscent of the sultry sounds and richness of R&B or Jazz singers of yesterday. Teri Tobin independently released her critically acclaimed debut LP, LOVE INFINITY, spring 2011. Since then, she has released her first Christmas EP, CHRISTMAS CHILD. Tobin's music can be heard on radio stations worldwide as well as countless podcasts, DirecTV, and on select airlines In-Flight. Her international hit-single "Free" remained at the #1-spot for continuous weeks on various charts in the United Kingdom and The Netherlands. Tobin, SoulTracks 2011 Readers' Choice Awards and Independent Music Awards Nominee, is currently touring select cities in the U.S. with her "Love&Sōl LIVE" concert series which kicked-off at the legendary Roxy Theatre in December. On Valentine's Day 2012, she released the title track and first single "So Good to Me" feat. Morris Alan from her forthcoming sophomore full-length album entitled, SO GOOD TO ME scheduled for release June 2012. Tobin punctuates each line with heart and soul, speaking to every generation with each melodic phrase. Leon Ware, respected songwriter and producer of some of soul music's most coveted recordings is in a somber, reflective mood. Touting. His latest collection, “Moonride” is trademark, smooth, soulful, romantic Ware, the kind of music that helped Ware craft his most noted recording, Marvin Gaye's historic “I Want You” album in 1976. However, that album alone doesn't do Ware, who remains largely unknown outside specialist soul music circles justice. Born In Detroit, MI in 1940 it was natural that Ware would find his first home at Motown, writing for the likes of the Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, The Miracle, Kim Weston and Isley Brothers. Writing for Ike & Tina Turner's 1971 album “‘Nuff Said” for United Artists landed Ware a solo deal at the label resulting in 1972's self titled debut album, though his vocal career actually began 12 years earlier in 1960 with ABC Records. However, Motown would provide Ware some of his most memorable successes. In the early '70's he formed a collaborative partnership with Diana Ross' younger brother Arthur “T-Boy” Ross resulting in Michael Jackson's “I Wanna Be Where You Are” (from the "Got To Be There" album) and of course, Marvin Gaye's historic “I Want You”. Further collaborations throughout the decade with the likes of Minnie Riperton, AWB, Donny Hathaway, Quincy Jones, the Miracles, Bobby Womack. What, perhaps, though is most compelling about Ware's story is the longevity of his songwriting career. On into the '80's and '90's he has received songwriting credits for the likes of Loose Ends, Jeffrey Osborne, Teena Marie, James Ingram, Isley's, Chico Debarge and Maxwell (“Sumthin' Sumthin'”).

Upon the release of the independent film Fathers of the Sport, one of the songs she co-wrote can be heard as a backdrop to this powerful film.
