On this Tuesday's show, Sonny Bunch (The Bulwark), Alyssa Rosenberg (The Washington Post), and Peter Suderman (Reason) discuss the fall's surprise breakout at the box office: Five Nights at Freddy's, a property you've almost certainly never heard of if you're over the age of 35 but almost certainly love if you're under the age of 18. How did Universal turn this into a monster hit despite putting it on Peacock and in theaters simultaneously? And then we review The Killer, David Fincher's latest for Netflix starring Michael Fassbender as the titular killer. Is it a slick exercise in style, a sly comment on the whole hitman subgenre, or a scathing indictment of modernity's detachment of labor and laborer? Maybe all three, wrapped up in a little techno-critical ribbon, a perfect gift for Fincher's Netflix overlords. Make sure to swing by Friday for our bonus episode on the meaning of the explosion of hitmen on film in recent years and what it all might mean. And make sure to share this episode with a friend if you enjoyed it!

After years of post-pandemic doldrums, people are finally going back to the movies with one of cinema's biggest opening weekends since 2020. Big-budget movies like “Mission Impossible,” “Barbie,” and “Oppenheimer” are drawing people in, although some, like the new “Indiana Jones” movie, are struggling to make back their budgets. To the surprise of industry insiders, however, “Sound of Freedom,” a film that exposes the global problem of child trafficking, is shattering expectations and filling theaters across the country. And with a budget of just $14.5 million, it's set to be a huge financial success. Matt Kibbe is joined by Jeffrey Harmon—co-founder of Angel Studios, which is distributing “Sound of Freedom”—to talk about the film's success and the mystifying attacks from left-wing critics, most of whom haven't even seen the movie they are decrying.

Without the music, the 1983 cult classic film Eddie & The Cruisers just wouldn't be the same. Before Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout would become the breakout surprise hit video game of 2020 before Among Us arrived on the scene. Before Tim, The Tat Man would hit trending on Twitter with his 8 days saga where he attempted to win a single game! Before Fall Guys would provide endless inspiration for YouTubers looking to recreate the series in the real world, including Nadeshot and the Sideman. There is no way on earth you haven't heard of the massive rise in popularity of Fall Guys which took over Steam, Twitch, and internet meme's for August and into September of pandemic 2020. For those just tuning in, well 60 players have to survive colorful obstacle courses with only one being the victor. Sounds easy right? Well for gaming superstar Tim The Tatman it took 8 days before he took home his first W and when that happened the entire world watched in celebration. That brings us up to date with its meteoric rise to the top of the gaming charts a couple of weeks back but its history and the idea is actually loosely based on 1980's Japanese shows including It's a Knockout or the more widely known Tekashi Castle. Fall Guys, well the game's launch date was a disaster with fans crashing the server and the company was nervous as a number of their past releases hadn't done so great. But it was early adaptors like Soddapoppin, xQc, Lyric, Mizkif, Forsen, and others who had been given early access to the BETA had already proven to the masses that this was a game too fun and easy not to miss out on.
Be honest, you thought it wouldn't be any good because the main character was a girl?

We are back in Los Angeles with the killer couple behind Surprise Hit Films. W. Bruce Cameron and Cathryn Michon are best known as co-screenwriters on the box-office busting movies from the film franchise that began with A Dog’s Purpose. They’ve been involved in studio pictures, independent film, TV, and bestselling novels. In this episode, we hear about how important is knowing who’s the boss—and handling staff complaints about the boss in a way that honors the partnership. This is especially important when the business is clearly not a democracy. There’s also a special warning for a couple considering collaboration—and why you might not want to do it. There’s an very, very VERY important question for any couple in business together: Ever wonder why your favorite scenes from your favorite movies are the scenes they are? (Who saw that coming?) And how Bruce and Cathryn support each other in business is instructive—and speaks to the power of a proper collaborative partnership. Hear some interesting and useful tips about the dynamics of working as a couple with staff—especially when it comes to having a conversation with contentious potential. You’ll hear a few references from Part 1, including “Amber on the slide.” She’s a capable and enthusiastic stunt dog. And there’s a reference to Ruddy McCann, who’s the hero of Bruce’s Repo Madness novels. We get more Hollywood moments from their real life together. They include romantic incredulity and projectile crying. And there’s maybe the best lightning round ever. (Will they win the Ginsu knife?)
Hit movies, TV series and bestselling novels: meet Hollywood creative power couple, Cathryn Michon and W. Bruce Cameron. They’re best known as screenwriters for the Dog’s Purpose film franchise. The first film, A Dog’s Purpose, starring Josh Gad, Dennis Quaid and Peggy Lipton, broke $200 million at the box office on a reported budget of $22 million. Cathryn is a writer/actor/director, known for her independent comedy films, Muffin Top and Cook Off, and the Grrrl Genius books. Bruce’s bestseller, 8 Simple Rules For Dating My Teenage Daughter, became an ABC sitcom. At this writing, Bruce is touring to promote the third in the Dog’s Purpose novel series, A Dog’s Promise. All these separate projects. Isn’t this supposed to be about couples working together? Yes it is. And these two are dynamic business and creative partners. Everything that goes out the door, they've both worked on. She edits his books. He works on her movies. They’re funny, and share a potent creative and business dynamic. They also have a useful decision making structure that every CoupleCo should consider. And, that they’re both dog people is important. Without dogs, and without Bruce spontaneously telling Cathryn a story that eventually became a New York Times bestseller, we might not be here today. (And a lot of Hollywood dogs would be out of work.)

When the weather's fine, we've got summer blockbusters on our mind. We've created sixteen categories, such as Best Soundtrack, Surprise Hit, Biggest Letdown, Most Mind-Blowing Visual Effects, Best Lead Actress and, yes, Greatest of All Time. Kent and Joel probably stressed about their answers more than they should have, and they're worried about giving too many "primary answers," but we hope you enjoy this episode all about some of the biggest movies in cinematic history. Pop some popcorn, shut off your brain a little and press play to hear this explosion-fueled, CGI-laden episode of Baconsale!
The Snowdens are off to Las Vegas for Double or Nothing, but didn't want to leave their dozens (DOZENS) of listeners empty handed this week. So, for the few and the proud, here's a bonus edition. Then, in lieu of reader questions, we have our very first podcast argument about the future of AEW. See you back here next week as we discuss the sights, sounds and suplexes of Las Vegas.

Lola Rosa’s MN is comprised of two sets of brothers - Mike & Erick Ervas + Ryan & Randy Limbag - who also happen to be cousins to each other who decided to get into the catering/pop-up food scene shortly after their lola (grandmother) passed away. Almost overnight, they were slingin’ their fusion Filipino street food (think chicken adobo baos, pork belly “Cebuanos” [a twist on Cubanos]) at large-scale events and was just recently named as one of the most surprising things that happened in the Twin Cities food scene by Eater. Sold out event on top of their day gigs in banking, teaching, hospitality, and music!
