Thursday, August 22 is a historic day for America's commitment, to its democracy and its promise of equality for all its citizens, regardless of race,, creed, color or gender. —— This day is historic in that on the evening of 22 August,  vice president Kamala Harris, a biracial person , a woman of south east Asian and Jamaican descent, will accept the Democratic nomination for president of the United States of America. T Former president Donald J Trump, the Republican nominee for president, opined while being interviewed at the recent National Association of Black journalist convention in Chicago, that Harris “happened to turn black” just a few years ago. His comments sparked disbelief and outrage, for the audience of black reporters, editors, photographers, news Directors and others. —— In the first hour of this 169th episode of Tangazo,  I am joined in studio by Retired journalist LS Lockhart, and for the purpose of this discussion, the mother of biracial children. She will lead a discussion on identity with people who are of more than one race or ethnicity, where we  hope to learn how they navigate having more than one culture. ——— Our guests for this discussion are Shanti Parikh , a professor of Anthropology at Washington University, who has both black and Indian parents and Robert Williams,  who was also in the audience of black journalist, when Mr. Trump made his malicious comments regarding VP Harris‘s ethnic background. ——— Mr. Williams a consultant at interlace health,  is also a product of biracial parents. ——— In the second hour of Tangazo,  I'm joined in studio by Michael Wesley Jones, former senior policy advisor to former St. Louis county executive Charlie Dooley and former chief of staff for former St. Louis mayor Clarence  Harmon,  also political consultant Tim Person and progressive activist Reverend  Darryl Gregory Gray. ——— We will offer an analysis, on the historic significance of vice president Harris's nomination , for president and the challenges she faces, in her efforts to become the nations first female president.  ———

The 168th episode of Tangazo - a Podcast from KDHX, was something very special that caused me to think long and hard before making this post. The easiest part of the show was the first 30 minutes spent with St.Louis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell, who showed some fatigue from his 24/7 campaign, for the Democratic nomination for Congress, representing the 1st Congressional District of Missouri, on the August 6th Democratic ballot ----- We talked about the fact that both candidates, he and the incumbent were funded millions of dollars by outside groups. ------ We both agreed that's it's a false narrative, for black voters especially in the 1st Congressional District that boasts the highest crime rate in the state, where half of the worst schools in Missouri, are found in St. Louis City and County and that the 1st District, has one of the highest poverty levels in the state of Missouri. ------ We agreed that because of the importance of addressing those critical issues, his priorities should be improving the quality of life, in the 1st Congressional District and that's what black voters should be most concerned with, when casting their ballot in August 6th primary elections. ----- There is a well known adage that says “all politics are local”, meaning you vote for your best interests, for you and your family and your Community. That's just common sense and has absolutely nothing to do with who is funding a campaign. ------- Before we go any further I think it's important for you to know, incumbent Congresswoman Cori Bush, has been invited to be a guest on Tangazo, throughout her 2 terms in the US Congress, as she was invited for this pre election special episode.----- Although there is no requirement from the FCC to offer candidates equal time, it has always been my policy to provide airtime to serious candidates for public office, whether I agree with their positions on issues or not! Former State Senator Maria Chappelle, also a candidate for that seat in Congress, was invited and responded by coming in to kdhx to share her thoughts, on why she was running against incumbent Congresswoman Bush. Needless to say Congresswoman Bush has shown absolutely no interest whatsoever, in appearing on the show. They went from acknowledging receiving my email request, to just ignoring them and me too. ----- All we can do is ask, I might add that Cori Bush the candidate, did drive 25 miles to the SIUE Edwardsville campus, to be a guest on our Voices program. But since being elected, absolutely nothing. County prosecutor Bell, has been just the opposite since his election, as the first black St. Louis County Prosecutor. He has made himself available to discuss issues of concern to the African American community, virtually every time that I requested, either by phone or in person, when possible. ------- Next we are joined by metro East Attorney,  Marlena Suarez and her client Keanna Miller, mother of 4 years old son Terrell Miller, who was shot and killed, by a policeman responding to a domestic dispute in her home in MaComb Illinois. This is a compelling story that might move you to tears, as told by the mother who describes how this tragic incident occurred in graphic detail. ------ We conclude this two hour episode with a 30 minute discussion on the  August 6 primary election, with political consultant and Tangazo commentator, Tim Person and activist attorney Jerryl Christmas, also a frequent Tangazo Commentator. The conversation was candid and passionate, as we discussed who would serve the needs of black voters and union workers in the U S Congress, representing the 1st Congressional District in Missouri. -------

Tangazo.kdhx.org  Former Tallahassee Mayor Dorothy Inman-Johnson, was also bubbling with excitement and confidence that Vice President Kamala Harris, was the right choice to defeat former President Donald J Trump, in November. ----- Throw in a couple of comments from listeners and the second hour was a fast paced, in-depth, continuation of the excitement created by President Biden's decision, to pass the torch to his VP Kamala Harris, by withdrawing from the 2024 presidential election. —— In the first hour we focused on the Israeli war with Hamas, from a local Jewish perspective, with former ADL StLouis Chapter President Howard Loiterstein and Stuart Clayman, a leader in the StLouis and Missouri, Jewish community. Clayman is a longtime volunteer for the StLouis City Academy and has recently returned from a month long visit in Israel, where he tutored young Jewish refugees in math. ———- We also discussed the Jewish community's support for StLouis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell's bid to unseat, first district Congresswoman Cori Bush, who has alienated the Jewish community, by her continued attacks on Israel and support for Palestinians. Also  her unwillingness to meet with Jewish community leaders, to discuss their concerns has the Jewish community committed to replacing her, with Bell. —— Comments from our listeners also contributed to this discussion.   With the upcoming elections, April, August and November elections, KDHX's TANGAZO wanted to introduce to our listeners the people who are responsible for collecting, protecting and getting the votes out in our region, the Republican and Democratic Directors of the St. Louis County Board of Elections, Mr. Rick Stream, and the Democratic Director, Mr. Ben Borgmeyer, of the St. Louis City Board of Elections.  St. Louis City and County represent over 20% of all voters and votes cast in the State of Missouri, in statewide elections, or actually slightly more than 1 out of 5 votes.  Given the importance and weight that this region carries, we thought that having the two persons who are responsible for seeing to it that each and every vote is counted should visit and explain to our listeners how the process really works, how they protect access to the polls and how the voting process has changed in recent years.  The Honorable Rick Stream has committed his entire adult life to public service by serving in the United States Navy, being elected to a local school board, serving as a Missouri State Representative, barely losing his race as County Executive (by less than 1%) and is now serving as St. Louis County's Republican Director.  Mr. Ben Borgmeyer, Esq., is an attorney who was is private practice and now serves as the Democratic Director of the St. Louis City Board of Election Commissioners.  Both are very well respected professionals and provided an incredible amount of insight into how they discharge their duties and how their respective election boards work to make our votes safe and counted.  We also discussed the national controversies about counting votes, when votes are counted and why Missouri has avoided the pitfalls and delay results that has created angst in other states.  This was a wonderfully informative show.
