It's a Bird... by Steven T. Seagle, Teddy Kristiansen, and Todd Klein is a DC book we've wanted to discuss on the podcast for quite some time now. Originally published by Vertigo during that imprint's 2000s heyday, It's a Bird... is a personal and powerful semi-autobiographical original graphic novel about the struggle of the act of writing, the pain of living with a family secret, and the difficulties of understanding the intricacies of a fictional character and whether that even matters. There's a lot of depth to this hidden gem of a book, and we hope our episode is enjoyable to those familiar with it, and motivates those who haven't read it to seek it out for themselves. A couple of notes: This isn't really the type of story that hinges on plot twists, so even though we may spoil a few things here and there, we don't spoil anything that would hinder your enjoyment or appreciation of this elegant work. Secondly, we will get to presenting our official DC Top 25 list eventually... We've just got some more honorable mentions to get through! (And maybe some more DIS-honorable mentions!)
In this episode, Chris welcomes back Dave from the “DC on Screen” podcast and the “Star Trek Universe” podcast to look at one of his favorite graphic novels, “It's a Bird...”. Acclaimed writer Steven T. Seagle is joined by Teddy Kristiansen on art to tell one of the most realistic Superman tales ever—without featuring Superman. Steve's given the assignment every writer dreams of: to write Superman. Only he can't relate to a Man of Steel—not when his own fears of death haunt him. Explore the cultural significance of a comic book icon as Steve comes to terms with Superman's importance and power as a fictional ideal.David on Twitter: @davidcrobersonDC on Screen Podcast on Twitter: @DConSCREENDC on Screen Podcast: http://www.dconscreen.com Star Trek Universe Podcast on Twitter: @startrekucastStar Trek Universe Podcast: https://startrekucast.tumblr.com Geek Ultimate Alliance on Twitter: @GUAPodcast NetworkWFTB on Twitter: @FinestBelieversWFTB Email: worldsfinesttruebelievers@gmail.comChris on Twitter: @ChrisBalgaSupport The Alliance On Patreon & Get Ad-Free, Exclusive, Early Episodeshttps://www.patreon.com/guanetworkGeek Ultimate Alliance Network Is Produced By GeekVerse Podcast www.geekverse.caNetwork Schedule Monday : World's Finest True Believers/Rangers Alliance Bi-WeeklyTuesday : DC Alliance Wednesday : Marvel Alliance Thursday : Star Wars/Slice Of Film Bi-WeeklyFriday : Superhero DiscussionSaturday : DC Comic Round UpSunday : Marvel Comic Round UpFollow the respective shows on Twitter so when they record live on GeekVerse Podcast Network you can join the chat and add to the conversation!
This episode starts with us taking some random people who don't listen to the show to task for some odd, and not particularly enlightened, opinions on comics. We then look at It's A Bird... by Steven T. Seagle and Teddy Kristiansen. It's a very complex look at familial secrets, the creative process and humanity in general all under the giant shadow of Superman's red cape. More than that, it askes probably the most important question that every person needs to answer themselves. Listen and find out.
And now a rambling and too brief review of "It's a Bird...." by Steven T. Seagle and Teddy Kristiansen, an autobiographical tale about how Seagle nearly turned down writing "Superman" due to his own personal problems.

With the end of Hunter Rose's saga we take a look at the bridge between our first two Grendels, Stacy Palumbo. Stacy's life was never easy, she lost her parents and her uncle and was adopted by the dashing socialite, Hunter Rose. Stacy grew up not only with Hunter but with "Uncle Argent" as well. Then, one fateful night, she overheard the news that would change her life...Uncle Hunter is GRENDEL!!! Stacy's life never stoped spinning out of control since. In this tale, taking place between Hunter's story and Christine's story, long time Grendel editor Dian Schutz takes the reigns and spins one of the most amazing and heart wrenching stories in all of the Grendel Cycle. This week, Greg and Mike team up to take on the hardcover collection DC's cartoonist spotlight anthology Solo. Two-on-one doesn't sound like a fair fight, but when that one draws on the talents of Darwyn Cooke, Teddy Kristiansen, Scott Hampton, Sergio Aragones, Tim Sale, Howard Chaykin, Paul Pope, Brendan McCarthy, Jordi Bernet, Mike Allred, Damion Scott, and Richard Corben? Not to worry. The lads talk about their favorite moments, who would be in a 2014 run of Solo, the keen eye of Mark Chiarello, a publisher's responsibility to their audience, good Chaykin and bad Chaykin (you know what we mean), and . . .
