While we over here at We Have Thoughts love us some gay cowboys, this particular western left us wanting something more. The Power of the Dog is a fine movie, and it's just that fine. Fine performances, fine cinematography, fine direction, fine script, fine. Maybe we're the crazy ones for wanting the movie with the most nominations to be a tad better than fine. Joe and Spencer are joined by guest cohost Reese Givens to pitch their personal choices on what should've been nominated for this year's Oscars.
How did a small, idiosyncratic western family drama directed by someone who had not done a feature film in more than a decade become this year's Oscar front-runner?? Campion has now become the first woman to receive two nominations for Best Director – her previous one was more than 27 years ago for The Piano. The story takes place in 1920s Montana and is mainly focused on two brothers who run a cattle ranch, the woman one of them falls in love with, and her troubled son….or is he? It stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Jesse Plemons, Kirsten Dunst, and Kodi Smit-McPhee… each of whom also received Oscar nominations for their exemplary work. Mike and Kenny discuss the The Power of the Dog and spot faith issues reflected in Academy Award winning director Jane Campion's latest film. Faith Issues Spotted: Living in and holding on to one's "glory days" and idolizing people, places and things in one's past rather than moving on in life and growth. The Transfiguration of Jesus story, (Matthew 17, Mark 9, Luke 9,) refutes this when Jesus brings Peter, John, and James down the mountain to head to Jerusalem rather than build booths to remain on the mountain top. Refuting the shame associated with and onto people and families associated with suicide. The place and possibility of redeeming grace amidst murder and execution Psalm 22, the place of dogs and presence of God in the midst of suffering.

Editor - Peter Sciberras THE POWER OF THE DOG editor, Peter Sciberras had never met director Jane Campion prior to their working together on this film, but their initial discussion about maintaining the tension throughout the film and the kind of tenacious editor that would require, left no doubt that Pete was the one for this project. THE POWER OF THE DOG is a western drama. both written and directed by Jane Campion, based on the 1967 novel of the same name by Thomas Savage. The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, and Kodi Smit-McPhee. PETER SCIBERRAS Prior to his work on THE POWER OF THE DOG, Pete had cut his storytelling teeth on a number of short films and then went on to make his mark in Australian cinema with films such as; HAIL (2011), THE ROVER (2014), WAR MACHINE (2017) and THE KING (2019).

The weekly review edition of the show with Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy never plans out a theme but sometimes they just appear. Post-Thanksgiving shopping is never quite as bad in this week's horror film (Black Friday) and the same might be said for Abel Ferrara's new work (Zeros and Ones). Why is Alanis Morrissette complaining about her documentary (Jagged) when a teacher has a more serious beef when her sex tape goes public (Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn). Andrew Garfield is a wannabe composer facing 30 (tick…tick…Boom!) while Robert B. Weide was in his early 20s trying to start a documentary on one of his famous writers (Kurt Vonnegut: Unstuck In Time). Everyone deserves to be hating on Benedict Cumberbatch in Jane Campion's latest (The Power of the Dog) while a group of survivors channel their anger against the Catholic Church into artistic healing (Procession). Will Smith portrays the father of two of the biggest sports stars ever (King Richard) and finally, Erik and Steve, offer balance to the force of criticism that has been crafted over Jason Reitman's latest (Ghostbusters: Afterlife). 0:00 – Intro 2:03 - Black Friday 8:15 – Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn 13:30 – Jagged 21:56 – Zeros and Ones 30:12 – Kurt Vonnegut: Unstuck In Time 39:20 – tick…tick…BOOM! 52:29 – Procession 1:04:13 - The Power of the Dog 1:16:11 – King Richard 1:33:13 - Ghostbusters: Afterlife 1:52:22 - Outro

Continuing the recent trend of covering major film festivals virtually, Erik Childress is once again joined by Sergio Mims who gets to add the discussion with a lot more movies. They wade through a lineup that included a number of music documentaries ranging from rock to jazz, a pair of stunning crime docs about real-life standoffs with police in the 1970s and even one for the foodies. They discuss some of the worst films they saw which gives Erik the opportunity to weigh in on The Eyes of Tammy Faye.
