This week they dive into anthology storytelling and its strengths and weaknesses, stereotypes of female journalists, Chalamet in a bath tub, and the state of Journalism within the 21st century. We have a lot to catch up on, but we do it efficiently enough for you all! This week on Taking It Down, we start with some college football bowl season comedy (1:28) before Natalie joins us to help sift through what about the finale of the Disney+ show Hawkeye left us feeling cold (4:02). From there, it's a discussion of the second season of the HBO show How to with John Wilson that somehow digresses into some reflection on the Bang energy drink (14:17). Everyone has thoughts about Adam McKay's new Netflix movie Don't Look Up: is it too simple to be good (24:24)? Before the break, our own Adam Morrow tells us spoiler-free reviews of both The French Dispatch as well as the new Matrix film (38:12). After the break, the Taking It Down crew talk disappointedly about The Book of Boba Fett from Disney+ (44:09) and curiously about the first two episodes of the HBO Max show Station Eleven (51:43). It's all here! Use the time stamps to navigate your way or listen from start to finish on this oversized episode! Join us for this episode and every episode on Tuesday mornings!

Editor - Andrew Weisblum ACE THE FRENCH DISPATCH editor, Andrew Weisblum ACE joins forces for the fifth time with director Wes Anderson. Andy's history with Wes began with THE DARJEELING LIMITED (2007) and was followed up by FANTASTIC MR. FOX (2009), MOONRISE KINGDOM (2012) and ISLE OF DOGS (2018). THE FRENCH DISPATCH was written, directed, and produced by Wes Anderson and stars an ensemble cast featuring Benicio del Toro, Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton, Léa Seydoux, Frances McDormand, Timothée Chalamet, Jeffrey Wright, Bill Murray, Owen Wilson and many more talented actors. It tells the tale of the French foreign bureau of a fictional Kansas newspaper, compelled to create its final issue when Arthur Howitzer Jr., the editor of the newspaper, dies suddenly of a heart attack. According to the wishes expressed in his will, publication of the newspaper will be suspended following one final farewell issue in which three articles from past editions of the paper are republished, along with his obituary. The project was first mentioned in August 2018 as an untitled musical set after World War II. That December, the film was officially announced with Anderson calling it a "love letter to journalists." Filming took place between November 2018 and March 2019. Following a year delay, THE FRENCH DISPATCH had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on July 12, 2021 and was theatrically released in the United States by Searchlight Pictures on October 22, 2021. ANDREW WEISBLUM ACE Aside from his rich body of work with Wes Anderson, Andy is also a frequent collaborator with director Darren Aronofsky. In addition to his Oscar®-nominated work on Aronofsky's BLACK SWAN (2010), Andy also collaborated with him on THE FOUNTAIN (2006), BROKEN ENGLISH (2007), THE WRESTLER (2008), NOAH (2014) and MOTHER! (2017). The two are currently at work on Aronofsky's next film, THE WHALE. We take a trip to Ennui-sur-Blasé for the American director's latest star-studded adventure, as film critic Ben Croll tells us why "The French Dispatch" is the most Wes Anderson of Wes Anderson films. With an ensemble cast including Léa Seydoux, Timothée Chalamet, Tilda Swinton and Bill Murray, we discuss how the in-jokes and publishing references combine to make a movie that is easy to admire but difficult to adore.

You want movie reviews? You get them here as Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy give you the standard they love to hit with ten reviews, including revisiting the emotional powerhouse from SXSW (Introducing, Selma Blair), another documentary about the January 6th insurrection (Four Hours at the Capitol) and even another about one of the legendary makeup artists (Smoke and Mirrors: The Story of Tom Savini). They catch up on some festival horror films they did not get to on the shows from Sundance & SXSW (Broadcast Signal Intrusion, Knocking) and another trying to blend vampires with Michael Mann (Night Teeth). Families are given another theatrical offering (Ron's Gone Wrong) while adults who like quirk with their historical tales can try Benedict Cumberbatch painting cats (The Electrical Life of Louis Wain) and the latest from Wes Anderson (The French Dispatch). Finally, it all comes down to the film fans of Frank Herbert have been waiting for over 55 years (after initially waiting 19) as Denis Villeneuve's Dune hits the big screen (and HBO MAX). Is it worth the wait and the vast improvement over David Lynch's version that everyone hoped it would be?
