Send us a textIt's a BRAND NEW episode of Bakotunes! I'm honored to welcome my guest Monique Powell of Save Ferris to the show! It was an opportunity I could not pass up and after a few tech delays, it finally happened. Monique and I go back to the early days of the band in Orange County, gigging alongside ska homies Reel Big Fish and more before getting swept up in the third wave ska craze and a hit single - a cover of Dexy's Midnight Runners 80s classic, "Come On Eileen"! That was followed with tours across the globe and back, in the van, and of course, tons of sweaty ska shows packed with sweaty, skankin' checkerboard kids. It was the nineties and it was a blast. Lots of fun facts and ska time warping! We also have classic Save Ferris music and their latest single, "Get Dancing!" that just dropped at all music outlets on 4/25. Enjoy! https://saveferris.com/**Episode features the songs "Come On Eileen," "Get Dancing", "The World Is New" by Save Ferris. Also contains excerpts from: "Orange County, CA (1976)", "MTV Skaturday", Save Ferris Honda Commercial, "Sid & Nancy", "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", "Teens React to 90s Ska Music".Sponsored by Chain Cohn Clark - Kern County's leading accident, injury, and workers' compensation law firm. I've got the absolute pleasure of sitting down with the powerhouse trio from New Orleans' own Bad Operation: Dominic, Greg, and D-Ray.Now, if you don't know Bad Operation, you're about to get schooled! These guys are injecting a much-needed shot of adrenaline into the ska scene, bringing that classic sound with a fresh, modern twist with the phrase they've coined, New Tone. We're gonna be talking about their creative process behind their music, and what it's like to be part of a scene that's constantly evolving.Music By:Bad Operation - Peachy, Stay Inside and I Don't Wanna KnowSet The Tone - A Break In The RainThe Fullstops - What Good (AYS Exclusive) The Austin Young Show Theme - The FullstopsThe Austin Young Show Outro - Jeffboy Zen Follow The Austin Young ShowTalent Manager: Veronica Young *DISCLAIMER: I hereby declare that I do not own the rights to this music/song. Inspired by the energy, the soul and the message of classic ska, The Slackers have truly become legends themselves over the past 33 years. They first came together in New York City back in the early '90s, and studied at the feet of the masters, including members of Jamaican ska originators the Skatalites, who had relocated to the States. The Slackers rose to prominence alongside a wave of ska-oriented artists who came to fame in that decade, in what became known as "Third Wave Ska". However, long after Third Wave hitmakers like The Mighty Mighty Bosstones had sort of faded away, The Slackers remained true to their roots, and have continued to craft vibrant, original and important music for the past 33 years and counting. Lead singer/ lyricist/ multi-instrumentalist Vic Ruggiero and sax player David Hillyard have been doing this a long time. So, it's remarkable how much freshness and sense of purpose they perpetually bring to everything they do. The band's now legendary series of livestream concerts from New York during the early days of the pandemic are a great example of how they continue to lead the musical charge with imagination, originality and a sense of community. That run of livestreams eventually led to the Billboard chart-topping album Don't Let the Sunlight Fool Ya, along with a series of reissues of their past discography via Pirates Press Records – also home to punk and ska luminaries like Rancid, the Aggrolites, and Subhumans. Long after the days of those global livestreams, The Slackers continue to connect globally with fans across the world. Alberta is a shining example of this. The band is very well-loved here, and both Vic and David have plugged into the scene here for music projects of their own, performing and/or recording with Albertan luminaries like Jory Kinjo and Audrey Ochoa. But there hadn't been a proper Slackers tour through Alberta in seven years! At least, not until June of 2024, when they played sold-out shows in Edmonton and Calgary- which represented the last of the tour dates they had to postpone back in 2020. Befor playing those shows though, they kicked off their Alberta tour with a stop at CKUA studios for this epiosde of Hidden Track Stories! They shared an insightful, fun, heartfelt conversation about their roots, their latest record, and what drives them to create meaningful music about... stuff. The Hidden Track Podcast is made possible by the generosity of our donour community. Thank you for your support! On this episode of Vinyl Verdict, Bell, Jamie and Plouffe listen to Plouffe's next pick, Streetlight Manifesto's "Everything Goes Numb". Released in 2003, it was their debut album. A ska album, the songs have the speed and tone of the Punk genre, combined with the large horn sounds of Ska. Critics have called this album one of the most important albums from the Third Wave of Ska, and reviews for it were largely positive. Led by lead singer, guitarist and the producer for this album, Tomas Kalnoky, the band has gone on to release four more albums and continues to tour to this day. Will the boys like the lively, upbeat music paired with, frantic, downbeat lyrics? Come along and find out!

Born of a mixture of nostalgia, humor, and stubbornness, For The Record has been actively working to keep Third Wave Ska alive since 2011. Based out of Visalia/Fresno, CA the six piece has often been complimented on their high energy performances, characteristic of the genre. Following the self release of 2018's "This is Fine", the band signed with New York based label Manic Kat Records and subsequently released their EP "The Mess They Call My 20's" in summer 2019. The title is edited for content because who knows who could be reading these things. This week it's an episode all about stuff Dan likes! And we didn't plan it. Turns out SDCC Online weekend was just really chock full of stuff for Dan. Dan leads us off discussing how the Bone Netflix series has creator Jeff Smith's dream team working on it, then Max tells us about the trailer for Blade Runner: Black Lotus which Dan had also wanted to talk about, then Max rounds us out discussing the announcement of a new album from Third Wave Ska band Big D and the Kids Table! Is there something you think we should see or want to know if we've seen? Let us know on Facebook or Twitter!
Canonball is a segment on Bullseye that gives us a chance to take a closer look at albums that should be considered classics, to find out what makes them great. This time, the writer Aaron Carnes tells us why Crab Rangoon by MU330 deserves to join the canon of great pop records. Aaron is a music journalist who just wrote In Defense of Ska, which, well, does what it says on the tin: It champions not just the critically acclaimed, punk-adjacent two-tone bands of the late '70s and '80s, or the pioneering Jamaican bands from the '60s, but ska's third wave as well. That means Reel Big Fish, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones and more. Aaron tells Bullseye about Crab Rangoon by MU330. He puts the album in the context of the entire third-wave movement, and explains why the album shows ska music can be more complex and serious than you might think.

Many of the tribe know that I spent thousands of hours working in a mom and pop video store throughout my high school years. This is why I'm so excited to bring you today's show. We have Taylor Morden, director, and producer of the nostalgia documentary, The Last Blockbuster (2020).The Last Blockbuster is a fun, nostalgic feature length documentary film about the rise and fall of Blockbuster video and how one small town store managed to outlast a corporate giant. In 2017, when Morden started filming the Blockbuster documentary, there were only 13 blockbusters around the United States. You need to listen to him recount the moment he got the idea to produce The Last Blockbuster and all the ways the universe aligned for this project. We talked a great deal about his distribution plan, the challenges indie filmmakers face, and his company PopMotion Pictures. He also directed Pick It Up!, aSka in the ‘90s chronicles the rise and fall of Third Wave Ska music in the US of the 1990s.Enjoy my nostalgic conversation with Taylor Morden.
