In this "Boys' Toys" episode of our two-part TOYS OF SUMMER podcast, we revisit icons ranging from Zack the Lego Maniac to Sergeant Slaughter in remembrance of the toys we played with in the 80s and 90s that were marketed primarily to boys. As it turns out, some of our favorite cartoons from childhood were more than meets the eye - they were advertisements in disguise, created explicitly to get us to buy plastic playthings! The toy-to-TV-show trend kicked off with Hasbro's relaunch of its G.I. JOE action figures in 1982, rebranded as the “Real American Hero” in a corresponding animated series. It was soon followed by action figure juggernauts HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE and THE TRANSFORMERS. Using bulging muscles, explosive hardware, and cartoon violence to appeal to young boys, these series often wrapped up with a wholesome life lesson to balance out the mayhem (before cutting to a commercial break encouraging us to buy the latest bazooka-toting action figures). Along the way, we touch on other toys marketed mainly to boys during this era, including Hot Wheels, Nerf, Tonka Trucks, and Super Soaker - and of course, share thoughts on 1986's TRANSFORMERS: THE MOVIE and how the death of Optimus Prime traumatized a whole generation of youngsters. With the fabulous secrets of our favorite toy brands revealed to us, do any of these products still have the power? Or do companies like Hasbro and Mattel just look like Decepticons to us now? With movies like BARBIE and TRANSFORMERS: RISE OF THE BEASTS in theaters this summer, it's the perfect time to reconsider the lessons we learned from toy-branded cartoons and commercials in the 80s and 90s. Because now we know that the cartoons we loved as kids were a total sham — and knowing is half the battle! (This episode may contain a choking hazard for children under 3. Becky, Chris, and Seth sold separately.) Follow When We Were Young on Twitter and Instagram at @WWWYshow, on Facebook at Facebook.com/WWWYShow and email episode suggestions to wwwyshow@gmail.com. Patreon Unlock: The Hierarchy of Misbehavior

Oh Crap I Love My Toddler... But Holy F*ck

With so many new listeners joining the Patreon recently, today I'll be clarifying the hierarchy of misbehavior, and outlining in very clear steps, the timeline of exactly what to do when your child is misbehaving, using the example of hitting. It may seem cute and harmless when your kid is 16 months old, but if you don't nip it in the bud, hitting can become very problematic and painful if you allow it to continue, particularly when it's directed at another kid. First, you want to try the gentle method of simply grabbing their hand and saying, "No, we don't hit." If the behavior doesn't stop or even escalates from there, this is when the “Go To Your Room” strategy comes into play. The most important thing you can do is keep yourself regulated, and while co-regulation is ideal, this can be hard to do when someone is slapping you in the face or throwing Tonka Trucks at your head. If you need to take space separately to stabilize your own mental state, that's absolutely okay. This way you can come back and lend your child your calm, instead of giving them your Psycho Mom chaos. Once you are regulated, check to see whether you are continually moving the boundary or allowing your child to dictate your actions, as this can give kids too much power and cause their behavior to escalate even further. Next you'll want to figure out what caused the misbehavior in the first place. In non-hot moments, you can introduce the conscious parenting strategies that I've been breaking down in recent episodes, such as creating a throwing corner, building emotional vocabulary, and engaging in role play. Remember that it is not our job to make our kids like us - we are here to parent them, be their caregiver, guide them, and set firm boundaries. Our kids are brand new on the planet, and their only job is to explore and figure it all out, not take care of our feelings. We have to parent without their permission, not take anything personally, and trust that all our hard work in the toddler trenches will foster securely attached, emotionally intelligent kids and adults, which I promise will set the foundation for really cool, strong relationships down the road. Once again, thank you so much for your patronage, and for all of your wonderful questions and feedback as we unpack these important topics together. For more information on my potty training and parenting resources, please visit the links below.   The Finer Details of This Episode: Similar to my experience raising my puppy, Maverick, it's not fair to expect your young child to make good decisions - it's up to us as adults to help guide them A client asked about my knack for being pragmatic and organized I recently had to shake up my schedule as it was not working and I was falling behind, exhausted If you are feeling like your routine isn't working, it might be helpful to break down the components of your day and see where you can shift things around to maximize your time A lot of new listeners are joining the Patreon and I appreciate it so much But if you're just joining the podcast and starting with my latest episodes, the timeline might seem a little screwy - we don't want to immediately go to the “Go To Your Room” strategy, for example I wanted to run through the hierarchy of what happens when your child is misbehaving In the example of hitting, it seems harmless under the age of 2, but can become problematic and painful if it continues, especially toward other children If they're hitting around 16 months, you want to first try a quick, gentle parenting approach of simply grabbing their hand and saying, “No, we don't hit people” For some children, this is enough to stop the behavior But many parents report that their children are escalating at this point - if they continue to hit, this is when you would definitely want to implement the “Go To Your Room” strategy A lot of parents still say this feels like abandoning or will lead to a bigger reaction When behavior escalates, we're working either Overground (stopping the behavior in the moment) or Underground (getting to the root cause behind it) If we give in when the child's behavior escalates, we are moving the boundary and the child will keep testing it - moving the boundary can actually cause the behavior to escalate and give kids too much power Having too much power is actually scary for your child and makes them more reactive It's not the natural order of things and they are not developmentally capable of handling that When your child is escalating, check that you're not moving the boundary or letting them dictate your actions Next, ask yourself “What is causing this?” as something else could be going on If you allow your child to continue with aggressive or violent behavior, it will only cause you to become dysregulated as well The “Go To Your Room” strategy allows you to separate and calm your bodies before the situation gets out of hand I find the Gentle Parenting approach to label your child's feeling in the middle of a tantrum very annoying and condescending - they already know they're angry or frustrated What's more helpful is to acknowledge that they're mad and suggest you both take a break You can take that space together, but if your child is hurting you or you are feeling so dysregulated that you are in tears or yelling, you need to take that space separately This is the Band Aid solution in the moment, but you also need to get to the bottom of what caused the behavior in the first place When we get to the root cause, this is where we implement our conscious parenting strategies in non-hot moments (use a throwing corner, help build emotional vocabulary, role play) If you can regulate together with your child, great, but don't be afraid to take that space alone - it is crucial that you stabilize your own mental state so you can come back and lend your child your calm, not give them your chaos This is when Psycho Mom comes out Nobody can stay super calm when their kid is throwing things at you or slapping you - it's unexpected, painful, and jarring Don't feel guilty if you lose your sh-t when this happens - you're only human We can't expect ourselves to walk around, completely regulated all day long These are learning lessons and opportunities to apologize to our child and model self-regulation Co-regulation is ideal, but it is not always possible - if that's the case, it's okay to separate Remember, the goal is not for our kids to like us, it's to parent them - be the caregiver, create boundaries, provide for them, and foster a secure attachment Maintaining boundaries can be exhausting, and it's often easier to give in to a meltdown You can't take any of this personally Our kids don't really care about us - they're busy playing and learning, and it's not their job to concern themselves with us Also, they'll never love us the way we love them so we can't expect equal love - it's just the nature of the beast and we will always love them more Their only job right now is to barrel through life, touching, tasting, smelling, and experiencing everything life has to offer, not to care about our feelings The emotional capacity will come later   Quotes: “Don't make your child responsible for making the good decision… Don't expect your child to fully make good decisions. They're not going to make good decisions. They're too new, they don't have the brain development.” “I restructured my whole day and it's fantastic. It looks nothing like it did two weeks ago… If your day isn't working, and it's not just the regular exhaustion of being a parent and your kid up your ass all day, and the whining, and the negotiating, and the sibling stuff...it's worth breaking down and sort of even taking the components of your day and seeing, Well, what if I shift this here and what if I shift this there?” “We're not here to just drudge through every day, or be caught on a hamster wheel where we just feel like we can't catch up.” “The very first thing we always try to do is a very easy, quick, gentle parenting - No, no, we don't hit. You might block and kind of grab their hand, not violently, but grab their hand as they're about to hit and say, No, no, we don't hit, okay. We don't hit people.” “That is, a lot of times, what causes these escalations is we keep moving the boundary. And then the child has to keep testing it.” “When they start dictating our actions - You're going to play with me, you're going to cook me lunch, you're going to do this, that's too much power for them. And they get even more reactive, because they shouldn't have that much power. It's scary. It messes up their prefrontal cortex. It's just not the natural order of things.” “We don't want a child to know that they can just sit there and pummel you. That's also not really a good lesson. It is so much better for you guys to separate, and that is why, again, we do the Go To Your Room strategy. Hey, I can see you're pissed off. I'm pissed off. Let's go to our rooms and settle our bodies.” “When somebody says to you, Well, you look very angry. Really? No sh-t, I just threw a Tonka truck at your head because I'm pissed off.” “Can you take that space together? 100%. But if you're going to take that space, and the kid keeps pummeling you, or you're going to take that space and you've already become so dysregulated that you're in tears, or you've already yelled, then you need to separate.” “The solution is getting to the bottom of it, and the bottom of it - that is all the other work that we're doing as conscious parents in this new paradigm of parenting. That is when, in non-hot moments, we create the anger throwing corner, where we create emotional vocabulary, where we might process or roleplay.” “If you need this space, you guys, take the space. It is infinitely better to lock your child in a room for five minutes while you get your sh-t together, regulate, and stabilize your own emotional state, and then come back to your child. Then you can lend them your calm, you cannot give them your chaos.” “This idea that we need to be in sainthood while our kids swirl around us - I think it's unrealistic, and it's damaging us.” “If it's available, co-regulation is the best thing in the world. If it's not available to you, it's okay to separate and it's okay to separate in a really jarring way if you have to.” “As a generation of parents, one of the things that we're all doing wrong is we want our kids to like us. And we want a good relationship. But we also just want our kids to like us, which is natural. But that's not really our job. Our job is to parent, even if they don't like us.” “Don't concentrate on having a good relationship. Concentrate on the boundaries, and the rulemaking, and keeping everything safe and secure, and rhythm and routine. And we really want that secure attachment.” “If they're ignoring you, it's not because they're ignoring you. It's not personal, it's because they're busy. They're playing with something. It has nothing to do with you. And I think that's a really hard thing to accept.” “It's not really their job, at this time, to care about you. And again, I don't mean in like empathy, getting hurt, that kind of way. I mean, don't expect them to care about your feelings, because it's not really their job. They're still figuring out all their stuff.” “We have to parent without their permission… They're brand new on the planet.” “Why would he care? He's 2.5 or 3.5 [years old]. It's not his job to care! It's his job right now to barrel through life, touching and tasting and smelling and tripping and falling and learning. That's his or her job right now.” “It's not about caring, that's going to come later. So don't take it personally. Don't expect them to care.”   Links: Jamie's Homepage -  http://www.jamieglowacki.com/ Oh Crap! This episode is dedicated to them and the countless others killed in service to America in Afghanistan since 2001.PLEASE stop using these 13 deaths to virtue signal a culture war narrative about "BIDEN BAD"!! (We already know Biden is bad...) And please stop using them to perpetuate a neocon, forever war narrative. Unless you can tell us ways in which it is not gross to do so. We're all ears @libservativepod and at libservativepod@gmail.com.Donald Trump wants us to go back to Afghanistan to recover our toys.
