In 1974, The Rolling Stones were once again searching for their identity. After hugely successful tours in 1972 and 1973 thanks to the overwhelming critical and commercial success of 1972's Exile on Main Street, the band were mired in problems of their own making. Mick Jagger was bothered by wife (and now mother of his child Jade) Bianca trying to tame him from his lothario lifestyle. Keith Richards was diving deeper into his heroin addiction. Mick Taylor was becoming disillusioned with his role in the band as he was contributing and writing songs but never given credit (or royalties). 1973's Goats Head Soup is a fan favorite but was derided by critics for not being as good as Exile. Apparently the Stones were going to a half live, half covers album that eventually gave way to more interesting original materlal (Ain't Too Proud To Beg still made the album and was the 2nd single). Disenchanted with married life, being hounded by press and law enforcement helped create It's Only Rock N Roll - an ode to their lives as huge stars in the public eye. The title track is a classic both for the name and the story of Mick wondering what is enough for the fans and press. They come strong with killer Keith riffs (If You Can't Rock Me, Dance Little Sister), dirty roadhouse rockers (Short And Curlies) and forays into reggae, country, gospel and soul with the usual R&B sensibilities that make the Stones the Stones. Of course, we were a bit put off that there is no Keith song on the album (the last time that would happen) but you know he had something to do with Fingerprint File, a song about running from the FBI and all manner of police. With Nicky Hopkins and Billy Preston lending their talents on the keys, Ronnie Wood and David Bowie making brief appearances and the boys experimenting a bit, this ends up being a fun Stones record to explore. It might not be chock full of radio hits but get to see the Stones going down paths they don't always go with surprising delight. Not the best or worst of the Mick Taylor era and one we're glad we researched and heard. Ugly American Werewolf in London Website Visit our sponsor RareVinyl.com and use the code UGLY to save 10%! Radio Funk | Le Podcast de Funky Pearls Radio

Today on Funky Pearls Radio, we're delving into the life of David Ruffin, a towering figure in the soul and R&B world, whose voice came to define an era at Motown Records.  Born David Eli Ruffin on January 18, 1941, in Whynot, Mississippi, David's early years in the church choir laid the foundation for his future success. The younger brother of Jimmy Ruffin and cousin to Melvin Franklin of The Temptations, David was surrounded by musical talent from the start.  In his teens, David's foray into professional music began with the gospel group the Dixie Nightingales and continued with the doo-wop group the Voice Masters.  By 1960, he was in Detroit, signing with the Anna label as a solo artist, releasing singles that would mark the beginning of a remarkable journey. David's destiny with The Temptations began in 1964 when he replaced Eldridge Bryant. Initially a background vocalist, David soon emerged as a lead singer on hits like 'My Girl' and 'Ain't Too Proud To Beg', his voice becoming synonymous with the group's success.  However, his time with The Temptations was not without its challenges. By 1968, due to various issues, David was replaced in the group, leading him to embark on a solo career. His first solo hit, 'My Whole World Ended' in 1969, proved that his voice could captivate audiences just as powerfully on its own.  The 1970s saw David collaborate with his brother Jimmy and work with producers like Van McCoy. His album ‘Who I Am' in 1975, featuring the hit ‘Walk Away From Love', marked a high point, resonating with fans on both sides of the Atlantic. The late 1970s and early 1980s were a period of transition for David, with a brief imprisonment for tax evasion and a move to Warner Brothers Records.  His album 'Gentleman Ruffin' in 1980 and the subsequent reunion with Eddie Kendricks in 1982 rekindled memories of their Temptations days. David's collaboration with Kendricks culminated in the album 'Ruffin And Kendrick' in 1987, showcasing their enduring vocal magic.  This period also saw them perform with Hall And Oates at the Apollo and the Live Aid concert, celebrating their legacy in soul music. The early 1990s saw David recording with Ian Levine's Motor City label and touring with Eddie Kendricks and Dennis Edwards. However, this resurgence was cut short by his tragic death on June 1, 1991, in Philadelphia, following complications related to substance abuse.  David Ruffin's legacy in music is monumental. His voice not only defined the sound of The Temptations but also left a lasting impact on soul and R&B. His albums, from 'My Whole World Ended' to 'Ruffin And Kendrick', are testaments to his versatility and enduring appeal. As we reflect on David Ruffin's life and career on Funky Pearls Radio, we remember a man whose voice was as compelling as his life was complex.  His contributions to music continue to resonate, reminding us of the power of a soulful melody and a passionate voice. David Ruffin, a true legend of Motown, remains an unforgettable figure in the annals of soul music.Hébergé par Ausha. Visitez ausha.co/politique-de-confidentialite pour plus d'informations.

Needless to say, we have fun every week here on O3L, but this one will have ya dancing in the streets guaranteed! We just can't help ourselves when it comes to talking about music influenced by "The Sound of Young America," Motown Records...especially when Heaven must have sent us this week's guest from above. What's going on, you ask? We guess you say, what can make us feel this way? Well, by now, you've probably heard it through the grapevine that it's the marvelous Arthur Alexander! (Oh, was that subtle enough?) Arthur has a very powerful story of rock n' roll salvation. Growing up in communist Poland in the '60s, Arthur discovered the power of rock through records pressed on postcards and through scratchy radio signals that the government attempted to silence, deeming this new musical form of freedom as a threat to society. It was the sound that united and invigorated legions of youth, inspired kids to form bands, and, for Arthur, paved the way for a new life in America. In the mid-70s, his band The Poppees were a part of the burgeoning New York scene, playing venues like CBGB and Max's Kansas City alongside The Heartbreakers, Ramones, and Blondie, despite eschewing straight ahead punk rock for the sounds of Merseybeat. After The Poppees, Arthur formed rockin' power pop group Sorrows, fulfilling his vision of crossing ABBA with The Sex Pistols. Sorrows issued two albums for CBS, 1980's Teenage Heartbreak (the sessions from that era also captured on the Bad Times, Good Times album) and 1981's Love Too Late. The latter was so badly botched by the record label that it prompted Sorrows to reform four decades later to put things right, to record the album that it should have been all along: Love Too Late...The Real Album. Arthur has also issued two marvelous solo albums in recent years, 2018's One Bar Left, and the brand new 2023 LP Steppin' Out on Big Stir Records. https://www.bigstirrecords.com. The Temptations are one of the greatest singing groups of all-time, with 14 No. 1 R&B singles, including all-time classic hits like “My Girl," "Ain't Too Proud To Beg," “The Way You Do The Things You Do,” and “Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)." The group is one of the most influential of Motown Records' golden era and their success has transcended to current times with non-stop touring as well as the 2018 11x Tony-nominated Broadway smash musical based on their lives, Ain't Too Proud. Their songs have been covered by a who's who of the greatest artists of all time: Al Green, The Rolling Stones, Bette Midler, Peter Tosh, and Dolly Parton, to name a few. They've not only received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but been inducted into the Grammy, Rock & Roll, and Vocal Group Halls of Fame. This episode was recorded live before an audience at Warner Music in Los Angeles in October 2019, a day before Otis Williams' birthday. 2021 marks The Temptations' 60th Anniversary. This exhibit is called The Vietnam War: The Music. Our mission here at the Music Museum is to support all Vietnam Veterans and those who serve the United States, then and now. We thank you for your service. Early-on, in Vietnam, soldiers turned to music as a lifeline to the home front they promised to defend. Rock & roll (R&R) really became rest & relaxation (R&R) for the troops. It was this music that got you through another day, another day closer to going home. Music was a big part of a soldier’s down time that centered within the hooches of Vietnam. The music that was popular during the Vietnam War was, and is still, therapy. There are songs you can remember, and then there are songs you REALLY remember. Many of these songs will have a special meaning for you. A place, a brother, a time gone by. This program is for you, the Vietnam Vets, who will never forget. Our goal with The Vietnam War: The Music is to honor the fallen and the survivors with the music that got them through “just one more day”. Our shows are broadcast around the world. They say thank you & “welcome home” to all Vietnam Vets. There is no opinion offered on the War. It’s all about the music. **** For your service and your sacrifice, this is The Vietnam War: The Music. La música de la banda de Los Angeles que lidera la jovencísima Bethany Cosentino, Best Coast, está presente de nuevo en el programa con uno de sus singles más irresistibles: When I'm With You.

Los temas que reseñamos hoy son: ‘If You Can't Rock Me', 'Luxury', 'Dance Little Sister', 'Ain't Too Proud To Beg' y 'It's Only Rock'n'Roll (But I Like It)'. Hoy pincharemos una reedición española del año 1987. Los datos de dicha edición son: Título: It's Only Rock'n'Roll (But I Like It) Artista: The Rolling Stones Sello Discográfico: CBS Label Code: LC 0149 Código de barras: 5099745020218 Año: Reedición de 1987 País: España Los enlaces que aparecen en el Podcast son los siguientes: Web de The Rolling Stones: https://www.rollingstones.com Web de Mick Jagger: http://www.mickjagger.com Web de Keith Richards: http://www.keithrichards.com Web de Ronnie Wood: http://www.ronniewood.com Web de Bill Wyman: https://billwyman.com Web de Ràdio Taradell: https://www.radiotaradell.com No olvides dejar tu comentarios y puntuaciones en iTunes, para nosotros son muy importantes.
