Label: Gordy 7108Year: 1971Condition: M-Price: $24.00Now, here's a case where the A side is already so wonderful that your average fan may never bother to flip the record over to hear the B side. Besides, by the early 1970's, Motown records weren't exactly reliable for having worthy flip sides. So the years go by, and one day you decide to see what the B side holds in store... Lo and behold, it's an even better song than the A side! As amazing as it may seem, it's true in this case. The only caveat is that the two sides are so completely different it's hard to say which is "better." Whoever owns this great single should just feel lucky to have both sides to look forward to! Note: This beautiful copy comes in a vintage Motown Records factory sleeve. It grades very close to Mint across the board (Labels, Vinyl, Audio).

Rolling Stone magazine ranked Paranoid, the second studio album by Black Sabbath, to be the number one of its "100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time."  Originally known by the name Earth, the band took the name Black Sabbath from a 1963 horror film starring Boris Karloff.  The band members were Bill Ward on percussion, Geezer Butler on bass, Tony Iommi on guitar, and Ozzy Osbourne on vocals.  It was originally a heavy blues band from Birmingham, England, but took on a darker complexion with lyrics of doom.Much of the music on Paranoid was developed during jams while the band was on the road. This album was panned by critics at the time, but it reached number 12 on the US charts.  This is quite a feat, considering that the band received virtually no airplay on rock radio when the album came out.  It would come to be considered a great heavy metal album, and Black Sabbath would be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.Wayne brings us this forerunner of prog rock and heavy metal. War PigsThe lead track for the album was originally going to be called "Walpurgis," a term for a black magic wedding or a Satanic version of Christmas.  The label had concerns about this and had them change the title to War Pigs.  The lyrics are about warmongers trying to get the working class to fight the wars for them.Paranoid This was the band's only top 10 hit in the UK, and it went to number 61 in the US.  Though named "paranoid," the song is really about depression.  The riffs bear a striking resemblance to Led Zeppelin's "Communication Breakdown."  Led Zeppelin was one of the band's favorite groups at the time.Rat SaladThis track is largely a guitar and drum solo.  The name comes from a joke about Ward's hair not being combed.  This would be used in concerts as "filler" to give the vocalists a break.Iron Man One of the more famous singles from Black Sabbath, it became even more famous after being used in Marvel's Iron Man movie. The lyrics are about a man who travels to the future and sees the apocalypse.  When he returns to the present, he is turned into steel, ignored by the population he tries to warn, and turns vengeful - causing the destruction seen in his vision. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television series “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”This sitcom set in Minneapolis benefitted from early 70's feminism as it featured a single career-oriented woman making her way on her own. STAFF PICKS:It's A Shame by The SpinnersBruce's staff pick brought the Spinners a hit at number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, their first hit in about 5 years.  This single was co-written by Stevie Wonder and Syreeta Wright in their first collaboration.  Wonder and Wright would get married in September of 1970.  The Spinners would go on to have bigger success after signing with Atlantic in 1972.War by Edwin Starr Rob brings us a classic protest song.  "War!  What is it good for?  Absolutely nothing."  Motown first released this song with the Temptations, but Starr would take it to number 1 with a heavier sound, reminiscent of James Brown.  The Undisputed Truth is the backing band on this song.I Want to Take You Higher by Ike and Tina Turner Brian's staff pick is a cover originally performed by Sly & the Family Stone.  Ike and Tina Turner would take this song to number 13 on the charts, so they did ineed take it higher than the original which peaked at number 38.Tighter Tighter by Alive 'N Kickin' Wayne features a one-hit wonder written by Tommy James that Alive N' Kickin' took to number 7.  The group split up shortly after the single fell off the charts.  They would reform in 1976, and still perform from time to time today.  Despite being a pop love song, it has a surprisingly solid guitar riff. NOVELTY TRACK:Rubber Duckie by ErnieThis Sesame Street song was on the pop charts a number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 in September of 1970.

Hi, it's Sandy, thanks for joining me today. The First Lady of Rock is 71 years old and proud of it. SUZI QUATRO has just celebrated her 50-year long career in the music industry with a massive 2.5 hour show at London's Royal Albert Hall that audiences are raving about. This week she's releasing a 3 cd box set, a 2 CD box set AND her latest book - her 7th! It makes me tired just thinking about it. I caught up with the irrepressible pocket rocket from her 15th century home in the UK where she tells me all about her poems, her amazing energy levels and her 'EGO' room on the top floor of her house. Do you remember THE UNDISPUTED TRUTH? They were a Motown recording act in the early 70's, put together in the image of The Temptations although lead singer, JOE HARRIS denies this. He's been with the group since day one (although he's been singing since 1957) and he walks us through those early days when the group sang on Edwin Starr's War, on Ain't No Mountain High Enough with Diana Ross and on Stevie Wonder's Signed Sealed and Delivered. Today Undisputed Truth are one of only 3 Motown acts that are still current and feature more than one of their original members. Very reluctantly, Australian veteran singer-songwriter DOUG ASHDOWN agreed to have a chat with me this week. Doug is now 80 and living in Adelaide, Australia, far removed from the hustle and bustle that once followed him as he spent decades on top of the charts. As he reflects on his career, we hear the stories behind his many classic hits including "Winter in America". I also report back for one of our listeners who asked me to track down English 60's pop sensation POLLY BROWN. Polly used to front a band called PICKETY WITCH. Well, after a lot of hard digging I finally have some answers to share. Remember, if you'd like me to track down someone for you and bring them onto the show - one of your favourite artists from the 60's, 70's or 80's - just send me an email through the website www.abreathoffreshair.com.au or dm me through any of my socials https://linktr.ee/abreathoffreshair I'd love to hear from you and if you like what you're hearing ... I'd be so grateful if you could leave a review/rating and subscribe.

The Blue Cats - Nowhere Man (196?) I'm gonna guess 1966 since this band released three albums of covers of their time plus some instrumental originals. Probably German studio guys bringing the Western hits of the day to their homeland.  Diane and Annita - Groovey Kind of Love (1965) Fans (?) of this release propose that this might not even be the titular singers (who sound nothing like the voices on this recording) but actually the writers, Carol Bayer-Sager and Toni Wine. Annita Ray also recorded a one-off novelty single with Eden Ahbez, the writer of "Nature Boy," in 1956. It was titled "Frankie's Song" b/w "Elvis Presley Blues."  Wikipedia: The melody is from the Rondo from Muzio Clementi's Sonatina, Opus 36, No. 5. Even though Wine and Sager claim full songwriting credits, they mainly wrote the lyrics and just slightly modified Clementi's music. Bayer Sager originally pitched the song to pop star Lesley Gore in early 1965, but Gore's producer at the time, Shelby Singleton, rejected it, as he found the word "groovy" too slangy.  Gene Cotton - Let Your Love Flow (1975)  The Undisputed Truth - Papa Was A Rollin' Stone (1972) This version actually preceded the Grammy-winning version by The Temptations, and the two are pretty similar. The Undisputed Truth had their biggest hit with a song written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong as well, "Smiling Faces Sometimes", which was originally recorded by The Temptations! This is another trivia question you can ask your friend.  Beau Williams - C'est La Vie (1984) Black Magic! - Miss Jessie (1970) Brian Wilson - Just Say No (1986) C.W. McCall - Kidnap America (1980)  The Soul Searchers - We The People (1972) Roogalator - Cincinnatti Fatback (1976) Note the Stiff Records logo on the upper left corner. This was one of the first Stiff releases. Danny Adler was an American ex-pat living in England. This was the second version of Roogalator (formed in 1972), and as much as this track smokes, the band got virtually no support from the label, and constant personnel changes killed the group. Could you have hung on that long with an entire movement (that you helped start) bubbling under your feet, only to be ignored and ultimately ripped off?  Cliff Bennett and his Band - Back In The U.S.S.R. (1968) Con-Funk-Shun - Clique (1974) Sesame Street - Cracks (1976) "Cracks" is an animated musical insert produced for Sesame Street in the 1970s. A young girl is unable to go outside to play because of the rain, and so she imagines the cracks in her wall form a camel. The camel takes her on an adventure through the wall where she meets a hen and a monkey, also made out of cracks. The voice is the one and only Dorothy Moskowitz, who I featured on a recent show. She is mostly known as the female voice of The United States of America.  Debby Dobbins - How You Gonna Feel (1979)  A selection from the one and only album by Don Thompson - Fanny Brown/Just Plain Funk/Night Ladies/Hang Loose (1977) God, I love this funk. From Dusty Groove: The one and only album from drummer Don Thompson – a funky Brunswick classic from the 70s, and one of the most unique records we've ever heard from the label at the time! Don's got this style of singing that has a bit of a southern twang at times, but he works with grooves that are definitely northern in their orientation – served up in a range of styles that includes the funky drum break of the title cut, some mellow-stepping moments on a few other tunes, and the bouncing boogie that's really become the album's calling card over the years! There's loads of great bass work on most cuts, which really grounds that album alongside Don's drums – and titles include "Just Plain Funk", "Fanny Brown", "Lovin To The Bone", "Night Ladies (part 1 & 2)", and "Hang Loose". Donny Hathaway - The Ghetto (1970) His early records were expansive and unique, and his voice was second to none. He was every bit the equal of Stevie and Marvin, but you know him from his duets with Roberta Flack.  Wikipedia: During the peak of his career, Hathaway began suffering from severe bouts of depression and exhibiting unusual behavior. In 1971, he was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia for which he was prescribed various medications. At one point, Hathaway was prescribed fourteen different medications that he was to take twice a day. After Hathaway was diagnosed and began taking medication, his mental state improved. However, Eulaulah Hathaway has said that her husband became less than diligent about following his prescription regimen when he began feeling better and often stopped taking his medications altogether. From 1973 to 1977, Hathaway's mental instability wreaked havoc on his life and career and required several hospitalizations. The effects of his depression and severe mood swings also drove a wedge in his and Flack's friendship; they did not reconcile for several years, and did not release additional music until the successful release of "The Closer I Get To You" in 1978. Flack and Hathaway then resumed studio recording to compose a second album of duets. You should investigate his discography, especially this stunning debut album, Everything Is Everything. He was brilliant.  Donny Hathaway - To Be Young, Gifted, and Black (1970)  Donnie Most - Rock Is Dead (1976)  Enoch Light and the Light Brigade - Pick Up The Pieces (1975) John Miller on bass.  Enoch Light and the Light Brigade - Puppet Man (1970)  Fleetwood Mac - Sentimental Lady (1972) POACA will remember that Bob Welch rerecorded this with a more prominent Christine McVie backing vocal part. The singing members of Fleetwood Mac circa 1977-1980 could have crapped on a cracker and it would have gone gold.  The Mothers of Invention - Help, I'm a Rock (Suite In Three Movements) I. Okay To Tap Dance II. In Memoriam, Edgard Varèse lll. It Can't Happen Here (1966)  Ian Dury and the Blockheads - Reasons To Be Cheerful (Pt. 3) (1980)  Kelly Gordon - He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother (1969) First version. Beautiful.  Kid Creole and the Coconuts - Indiscreet (1983) Live. Goddammit, Carol Colman on bass.  The Residents - Die In Terror (1980)  Hoover Commercial with Brian Johnson of AC/DC on vocals. visit acedoutpodcast.com to see photos and more“As long as you're consistent, things can happen.” So says solo artist JAY DOUBLE YOU!—who began his funk career as a pro drummer in the late 70s at Don Davis' legendary United Sound Studios in Detroit. His golden opportunity came in the form of a session with none other than OG Parliament vocalist Fuzzy Haskins, who had landed his own solo deal at Westbound. “Fuzzy, he gave me my first major session,” says Jay Dub, then known as Jim Wright. “He lived not too far from my mom's house.” Indeed, for young Jim, Parliament-Funkadelic had been a family affair ever since grade school, when he first got to know Bernie Worrell, George Clinton and the rest of the P-Funk camp through his big sister, vocalist Debbie Wright. Jay Dub remembers that first official session well. “Fuzzy was gonna play drums,” Dub explains, “cause normally he played drums on his stuff… I happened to be in the studio… I was like ‘Hey Fuzz. Wassup man? Can I give it a go?' Me knowin' him, he said ‘Okay Jim.'” Even so, young Wright knew full well that a chance wasn't a guarantee, as friendship and nepotism didn't get you very far when it came to laying down the funk. “You had to be quick, ‘cause money is being spent,” he explains. “You didn't get too many chances.” So Jay Dub went over to the drums and sat down, with Glenn Goins, Garry Shider, & Cordell “Boogie” Mosson holding their instruments and staring at him like: Why is Debbie's little brother in here when we're about to record? But little did they know, the Kid was ready. “They counted off, and I hit it in one take, man,” reports Jay. “Pocket. Timing. Solid. And from there I end up doing two more songs that night with ‘em. I would do a song, they would say ‘Take a break. Let us mix. We'll call you for the next one.'” Seven hours later and $400 richer, young Mr. Wright had been fully matriculated into P University. Word spread to George C about what went down. “Fuzzy gave me that shot, and from there I guess George heard it,” recalls Jay Dub. “And next thing I knew, I was called down to the studio.” Significantly, Dr. Funkenstein wound up pulling Jay Dub into a marathon session with the nimble-fingered bassist Rodney “Skeet” Curtis, recording songs that were turned into funky headwreckers which wound up on such classic records as Parlet's Pleasure Principle and Bernie Worrell's All the Woo in the World. All of this established Jay Dub's reputation as a pocket drummer, and some serious heads within the camp were starting to take notice. Yet, by the time the 1980s came along, the wind was starting to blow in a different direction. The drum machine, once a novelty, was becoming more significant in the music industry by the day, predicting a cruel fate for live drummers. A still quite young Mr. Wright saw the writing on the studio wall and decided it was time to expand his skills. Enter Don Davis, owner of United Sound and mentor to local talent. “He was great to me,” Dub remembers of Don. “Anyone that had enough confidence, he would give you a shot… He would at least throw you in the studio to do some demos.” And when Jay Dub found out producers got paid double scale, he really got inspired. So he improved his keyboard skills, grabbed the mic, and began to record his own ideas instead of someone else's. “It's a growth thing until the end, basically,” he says of his evolution toward becoming a singer/songwriter. “You're always learning. You're always trying to adjust if you choose to move forward.” As it turned out, part of moving forward was getting out of his deal with Davis in order to go independent. From there, Jim, now Jay Double, put out his own singles and LPs. He even started his own clothing line.We first met and talked to Jay Double You! for Episode 5 of Aced Out back in the fall of 2019, when we were still a struggling little podcast trying find our footing. He gave us a fascinating and fun interview that focused heavily on his P-Funk days but also featured some of his super dope solo work. But the “fun with a K” didn't stop there, not by a long shot. As it turned out, Dub not only enjoyed his moment in the spotlight, but also connected spiritually with Aced Out's mission and raison d'etre: to give props where props are due. “It's hard for musicians to give each other credit,” laments Jay Dub. “I say, ‘Genius, recognize genius.'” And we here at Aced Out know firsthand that the man practices what he preaches. Indeed, Dub recognized the opportunity to share the wealth and, with our blessing and gratitude, got on the phone to recruit some old friends for the cause. Consequently, the man has been an integral part of Aced Out's ever-expanding body of work, garnering us classic interviews with Joe “Pep” Harris of Undisputed Truth and the late Robin Russell of New Birth, as well as his fellow P-Funk alumni Rick Gardner of the Horny Horns, Steve Boyd, Andre Foxxe, and Grady Thomas. For this second appearance on Aced Out, Jay Dub traveled all the way from Suwanee, GA to join us in the Bay Area. In this intimate, in-person interview, Dub describes his transition from player to producer, explains how his subconscious guides his songwriting process, and reveals the secret to Tiki Fulwood's high-hat technique. Jay Dub also raps about why Junie Morrison loved singing over his drum tracks, learning rudiments from Tyrone Lampkin, and that time he made George Clinton bacon and eggs for breakfast. If all that weren't enough, Jay Stone & Ace Alan and a buncha Bay Area heavy hitters (listed below) help Jay Dub perform the title track to his funktastic solo joint, I'll See You Soon (2001)!Produced & Hosted by Ace AlanCohosted by Jay StoneExecutive Producer: Scott Sheppardw/ Content Produced by Jay Double You!Website, Art & Graphics by 3chardsw/ major props to Nat CollinsLive Version of “I'll See You Soon” Featuring:Jay Double You! — clavinet, vocalsFemi Andrades — vocalsVanessa Love — vocalsAlan Williams — tromboneAl Lazard — saxOcea Savage — synthKyle “Coyote” Collins — synth percussionChris McGrew — drumsJay Stone — guitarAce Alan — bassEngineered by Chris McGrew for Wally's Hyde Out @ Hyde Street Studios, San FranciscoVideo by RoAn Gibson for X Racer ProductionsWith thanks to Maryzelle UngoSound Editing, Video Editing & Graphics by Nick “WAES” Carden for Off Hand Records in OaklandTheme song “I Can Never Be” by the FUNKANAUTS from the album Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth an Issac Bradbury Production © 2022visit acedoutpodcast.com to see photos and more

On this episode of the True Tunes Podcast, we spend some quality time with one of the most exciting and fresh contemporary Gospel artists to emerge in years. DOE, (aka Dominique Jones) first came to our attention as a member of Forever Jones – an eclectic Gospel group that included her parents and siblings. With her solo debut LP Clarity, released on Jonathan McReynolds' new label with RCA Inspiration, (and including contributions by Israel Houghton, Matt Maher, McReynolds, and more,) DOE demonstrates talent, wisdom, and vision beyond her age. Her self-assured style, which includes elements of Norah Jones and Lauryn Hill, challenges conventions – even as it has already scored a #1 Hit on Gospel Radio.   On the Jukebox, we are joined by our good friend Aaron “A-Train” Smith to listen deeply to Stevie Wonder's world-changing music in the 1970s. Between '72 and '76 Wonder released five albums, four of which won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. He dominated the R&B and Pop charts and plowed his own lane – setting standards and influencing artists for generations to come. A-Train was drumming for The Temptations, The Undisputed Truth, and other Motown bands during those years. He gives us an insider's remembrance of Wonder, his music, and his legacy. Full show notes and music list is available at TrueTunes.com/DOE.   The True Tunes Podcast is sponsored by VisionTrust.org. Help us change the world for one child at a time by sponsoring today. What the Riff?!?
1973 - January: Elvis Presley "Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite"

What the Riff?!?

By 1973 Elvis had definitely not left the building.  In fact, January 1973 would be the month that Elvis Presley would broadcast a concert live via satellite to 38 countries.  The concert would air in the United States on NBC in April 1973, and would be the basis for the album we are featuring - Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite, the four-month delay being a result of a conflict with Super Bowl VII (which Miami Dolphin fans will recall as the culmination of Miami's undefeated season).Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis's manager, got the idea of a live satellite broadcast from Richard Nixon's 1972 visit to China.  There is also speculation that Parker took this step in lieu of an international tour to avoid revealing his status as an illegal immigrant in the United States (Parker was Dutch).  The concert was scheduled at the conclusion of the fifty-nine show engagement at the Las Vegas Hilton. The special was produced by Marty Pasetta, who had produced television specials for others like Perry Como, Glen Campbell, and multiple specials from Hawaii for Don Ho.  Pasetta was concerned after seeing what he considered a lackluster live Elvis show in Long Island.  Despite a dismissive stance from Colonel Parker, Pasetta took his ideas directly to Presley.  He wanted a lower stage with a runway, allowing better audience participation.  He wanted mirrors to frame the stage and neon lights to read "Elvis" in the language of all the countries to which the concert was broadcast.  Finally, and most controversially, he wanted Elvis to lose weight for the show.  Presley was impressed with his frankness, and took up his ideas, even embarking on an exercise routine at Graceland.  Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite would bookend the comeback era for Elvis which was started with his 1968 television special.  Elvis would encounter difficulties in his family life, health, and prescription drug use that would eventually result in his untimely death in 1977. Also Sprach Zarathustra/See See RiderThe Ricard Strauss tone poem made famous in "2001: A Space Odyssey" starts off the concert.  The intro leads into the blues standard "See See Rider" first performed by Gertrude "Ma" Rainey in the 1920's, and covered by many performers including Chuck Willis, Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels, and the Animals.Burning LoveDennis Linde wrote this song for Elvis in 1972, and it was a big hit, rising to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The track would be the last Elvis song to reach the 1op 10 in the U.S.My WayThis song is a cover originally performed by Frank Sinatra in 1969.  The lyrics are from Paul Anka.  Although it remains closely associated with Sinatra, it would also become a staple of Elvis performances in the 70's, and would hit number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 shortly after Presley's death.American TrilogyCountry composer Mick Newbury wrote this medley, and it would be popularized by Presley as the showstopper for many of his concerts.  The medley includes the 19th century southern song, “Dixie,” the marching hymn of the Union army, “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” and the African American spiritual “All My Trials.”  ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television series “Bonanza"The final episode of this long-running Western TV series aired in this month. STAFF PICKS:Papa Was a Rollin' Stone by the TemptationsBruce's staff pick is a funky and long song, with the album version of the song running 11 minutes and 46 seconds.  Originally released by The Undisputed Truth, the Temptations would take this song to number 1, and would win 3 Grammy awards.  “Papa was a rollin' stone.  Wherever he laid his hat was his home, and when he died, all he left us was alone.” You Turn Me On I'm a Radio  by Joni MitchellRob heads into the folk genre with singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell and this single from her fifth studio album.  David Crosby, Graham Nash, and Neil Young all participated in the recording session for this song, but only Nash's harmonica work made it to the final cut.  This was Mitchell's first top 40 hit in the United States. Dixie Chicken by Little FeatWayne's Southern Rock staff pick was actually recorded by a Los Angeles band.  Bonnie Raitt sings backing vocals on this song.  The story is about a guy who marries a girl in a drunken haze, only to be left shortly thereafter.Living In the Past by Jethro TullBrian's pick is a 5/4 metered song by rock flutist Ian Anderson.  This is the highest charting track from Jethro Tull.  It was a rejection of the happy tone that was fashionable in the post-Beatles music of the time.  Despite its success, Anderson did not like it.   FINISHING TRACK:I Can't Help Falling in Love With You by Elvis PresleyElvis closed out his concert with this song, and we're closing out this week's podcast the same way..

Not currently available for sale. Now, here's a case where the A side is already so wonderful that your average fan may never bother to flip the record over to hear the B side.
