An investigation has found that 23 Chinese swimmers tested positive for a banned substance before the 2021 Olympics — but were still cleared to compete by the World Anti-Doping Agency. Several of those swimmers went on to win medals, and that's not sitting well with some competitors heading into the 2024 Paris Olympics. Matt Galloway speaks with Travis Tygart, the CEO of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, and Ross Wenzel, the general counsel for WADA.

With this episode, we welcome back Travis Tygart to the show. Travis is the CEO of the US Anti-Doping Agency and was our very first guest to join the podcast in episode #1. In this episode, Kara and Chris chat with Travis on the latest in clean sport news including the impact of the pandemic and the delayed Olympics on anti-doping efforts in the US and around the world. Travis talks about the initial impact of the stay-at-home orders on USADA in March and the details behind Project Believe, a program to experiment with virtual testing during this time which could change the future of drug testing. We dig into the whereabouts filing system, how it works, and whether or not Travis believes there is a rise in those cases and suspensions in the last 12 months. Travis also provides details on the Rodchenkov Act and its progress in Congress, plus what it means to criminalize doping in the United States. Finally, we discuss the recent threats by the US Congress and the White House to defund the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) including USADA's perspective and the potential impact of such a decision. We are excited to have Travis back on the show and couldn't be more appreciative of his support of the podcast over the last 13 months.
Quiero proponerte algo. LEGO NO OLVIDES RESGUARDAR TU SALUD MENTAL. United States Anti-Doping Agency boss Travis Tygart warns what a postponed olympics could mean for drugs cheats.
USADA CEO Travis Tygart has dealt with some of the biggest anti-doping cases in history, such as the scandals involving Lance Armstrong and Marion Jones. Tygart says “nobody ever likes to have to hold a global icon accountable or take away five medals from a Marion Jones”. “Those are tough moments and you wish those athletes hadn’t made the decision to cheat,” he says. Despite receiving numerous death threats as a result, Tygart remains committed to clean, fair sport. “Whether it’s an American or an Australian, if you cheat and break the rules, you should be held accountable and that’s the code that we’ve all agreed to.” He’s very passionate about keeping the integrity in sport at all times and is not afraid to say what he thinks, always pointing to his “north star” - clean athletes. Our Medical Officer Larissa Trease also answers a question from the public about the prohibited substance GW1516, why it is banned and the health risked associated; and we detail our suite of online education programs – from Level Two to Clean Sport 101 – that are tailored to all athletes from elite to grassroots. In a special extended edition of the SportsPro Podcast, SportsPro editor-at-large Eoin Connolly meets in Lausanne with Travis Tygart, the chief executive of the US Anti-Doping Agency. The discussion begins with the latest chapter in the Russian state doping saga, and the path forward now that Rusada's compliance has been confirmed - under review - for the time being. In part two, Tygart reflects on the wider challenges facing WADA, the World Anti-Doping Agency, with a presidential race due when the tenure of Sir Craig Reedie ends later this year. Finally, the conversation turns to the US, the challenges of wrangling combat sports into stricter practices, differing standards among the major leagues and the lessons of the Lance Armstrong case. He also explains why, fundamentally, he remains optimistic about the anti-doping cause.
The World Anti-Doping Agency is meeting this week to decide if Russia should once again be allowed to test its own athletes.
