We have to be born again, so we will not be viewing the world from the under the sun perspective as Solomon was. We need to realize that spiritually God is achieving something in our lives strengthening our faith that we be more than conquerors in Christ Jesus. The world system is continually wearing out the saints of the Most High.

Sermon by Ant Frederick on June 8, 2025.Key scripture: Ecclesiastes 2:1-18-26Does your work ever feel like it owns you? Ecclesiastes exposes the futility of toil “under the sun”—yet points us to a God who meets us even in our weariness with purpose and joy.

Ecclesiastes begins:  The Words of the Preacher (Qohelet), son of David, King in Jerusalem, which references Solomon or someone in the Davidic Line.  Qohelet famously exclaims (in the King James), Vanity of Vanities, All is Vanity! T he ancient Hebrew uses “Hevel,” which differs from “vanity” in that it signifies empty air, like the breath we emit on a cold day.   Akin to our concept of vanity, however, the lament centers on much of life being meaningless. There is a notion that the Preacher is playing a role, pointing out how grim existence is without Faith.  He continues:   What profit hath a man of all his labors which he taketh under the sun?  In other words, What good has all your earthly work accomplished?  Further, the phrase, “under the sun” aptly contrasts our world with the transcendence of the heavens beyond. One generation passeth away and another generation cometh; but the earth abideth forever. The sun also arisesth, and the sun goeth down, and hastens to the place he rose.This poetry clashes with the majesty of the Creation story.  It is often considered part of ancient pessimistic wisdom literature, which lays bare the sadness and mundaneness endemic to life – in terms of the endless cycle of growth, decay and death.   However, this is the despair of one who lacks a view of the transcendent.    Qohelet continues to speak to fundamental observations every generation will uncover: The winds goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and returneth again according to its circuits.  The waters do the same – all rivers run into the sea;  yet the sea is not full.  The poetry is symbolicfor humanity never being able to get their fill from materialistic gains.   All things are full of labour; but man cannot express it.  The eye is not satisfied with seeing; nor the ear with hearing.  Though cryptic, this is generally understood to mean that no matter how wise, one will never fully understand this world.  Much is ineffable, including the questions of: Why are we here?, Why are things as they are?, Why is there suffering?, What is our purpose?  The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be, and thatwhich shall be done.  AND THERE IS NOTHINGNEW UNDER THE SUN.Is there anything whereof it may be said, see this is new?Truly, it hath been already of Old Time, which was before us.  There is no remembrance of former things, neithershall there be any remembrance of things to come .What we observe each day, so full-of-life and brilliant, will decay and die.   As to material riches (jewels, an amazing house, fancy car or new toy), they will lose luster.  All around us will be gone and forgotten. This goes for he who lived hundreds of years ago, just as it does for those who will be born hundreds of years from now.  Only though the Almighty, can we obtainsomething lasting.  Qohelet describes himself as King all over Israel in Jerusalem – the only mention of Israel in the Book.  In the mold of Solomon, Qohelet was renowned for his wisdom through contrasting the philosophies of the day and pursuing all knowledge under the sun.   Qohelet was in the position to find answers and guide humanity, but discovered there is only so much we can know.  He concludes that such pursuits are as futile as trying to capture the wind. His words imply that within each of us is the desire for a connection with something more, referencing the Bread of Life that Deuteronomy and Jesus speak to. Qohelet also devoted himself to madness and folly, perhaps referencing hedonistic pleasure and the hundredsof wives Solomon was attributed. His conclusion remained,  All is Vanity and Vexation of spirit.   Simply, you better look beyond Man for something more. To close the chapter Qohelet announces:  The wiser you become, the more you get frustrated in realizing what you don't know. For in much wisdom there is much grief; and he that increases knowledges increases sorrow.

Tonight, we'll read the 27th chapter of “Anne of Green Gables”, the classic 1908 novel by Lucy Maud Montgomery. This chapter is titled “Vanity and the Vexation of Spirit”In the previous chapter, Anne struggles to adjust to everyday life after the excitement of the concert. She finds ordinary days dull in comparison, lamenting that her experiences have perhaps spoiled her for simpler pleasures. School returns to normal, though minor quarrels persist among classmates stemming from tensions at the concert. Anne and Diana discuss growing older, imagination, and the trials of writing compositions. Anne enthusiastically shares a dramatic story she wrote, prompting the creation of a girls' story-writing club. Although Marilla disapproves of this pastime as foolish, Anne insists they always include morals in their stories. Ecclesiastes 1:12-18 reveals Solomon's quest for wisdom and knowledge, only to conclude that all is vanity and a striving after wind. Despite his unparalleled wisdom, he finds that human understanding is limited, and the burdens of life bring vexation. However, this passage also sets the stage for the hope found in Jesus Christ.

Preacher: Greg Alles Passage: Ecclesiastes 1:16-2:26 Observation of Vanity #2 - More Wisdom and Knowledge = More Sorrow and Vexation. Sermon Points: The Great Search (1-11) No Gain (12-23) Evil #1: The wise die and are forgotten just like the fool. Evil #2: Who gets all my stuff? The Gift (24-26) Big Idea: The Good Life is not a human achievement to be gained, it is a gift that only comes from God. Goads and Nails: The Good Life is not a Human Accomplishment. The Good Life is a Gift that only Comes from God.  

Ecclesiastes is a complicated book. It's meant to be provocative. It's meant to be emotional, to create emotion in you. It's meant to raise questions. Ecclesiastes means assembly. Most people think it's written by Solomon. You can think of it as a preacher's manifesto. The opening line is “vanity of vanities, all is vanity." Vanity of vanities is repeated 38 times in this book! The meaning of which becomes clearer as we go along. The literal meaning is' vapor.' Something that dissipates. It's okay if you can't immediately interpret everything in Ecclesiastes. Right now, we want to hear it, Step back and read a larger portion, and see what the larger theme is. The theme of Ecclesiastes might be, ‘what is the good life?' What is man meant to get out of the world, in his vapor of time on it? You can find the full show notes at https://www.lifeaudio.com/how-to-study-the-bible/ Section 1: Finding Life in Wisdom What does man gain? This is the journey of the book. How do we make sense of a dark and broken and complicated world considering God's promises and goodness? What is it like to wrestle with the concept that life does not always improve? What do we do when righteousness doesn't lead to blessing and goodness? All the frameworks we use to make sense of the world are being inspected and attacked here. “Vanity of Wisdom” v 18 – in much wisdom is much vexation, he who increases wisdom, increases sorrow. The preacher is willing to address the flip side of wisdom. Solomon asked for wisdom, sought it out, gained it – and he admits, it's a mixed bag. As you grow in wisdom, you can grow in sorrow. “Vexation” – sad and angry. We might call this an existential crisis – the more you know about the world, instead of finding hope, you find sorrow. Everything can be hard. There's a plus and a minus to everything in life, even wisdom. Section 2: Finding Life in Self-Indulgence The preacher tried wisdom, it led to sorrow, so he turns to pleasure to see what it can offer him. He found this was all also vanity. 2:4: “I made great works” – he became great through his work. This shows we can do good things with the wrong motive too, if we are trying to find life in them. If you want these things to hold the weight of your life, you will be greatly disappointed. “There was nothing to be gained under the sun.” What emotions come up when you hear this? What do you wrestle with? What's your response? Takeaway Lesson: 2:12-13 After considering the vanity of wisdom and the vanity of self-indulgence, he decides both are a mixed bag, but still, it's better to be wise than foolish. “There is more gain in light than darkness.” The pastor is refreshingly honest about it all.
