Back in 2012 a young lady was walking through Hyde Park with her sister. There was a triathlon taking place and she recognised the names of some of the athletes as ones she had raced against in prior running events. It was the London Olympic Triathlon and she heard Vicky Holland's name. At that time India Lee was taking a sabbatical from her running career and looking for something different. Her coach didn't want to see her stop competing, so he suggested triathlon. Seeing the race in Hyde Park India thought, “Why not?” and so she entered her first triathlon at Blenheim. In the 10 years since, she has won an ITU World Cup event in Italy, finished first in Ironman 70.3 events, raced at The Ironman World Championships and won ‘The Championship' event hosted by Challenge in Samorin. This is the story of how India Lee turned herself from a top class runner into a world class triathlete. At the age of 9, Non Stanford decided she wanted to be an Olympian. She tried Gymnastics, Swimming and Athletics before finding Triathlon, the sport that would take her to the Games. Mentored by Dame Kelly Holmes throughout her teenage years, Non was a talented junior middle distance runner who became a world beating triathlete. After becoming world champion in 2013, Non achieved her childhood dream when she became an Olympian at the Rio 2016 Games. However, the Games were bittersweet, finishing in 4th place just a few seconds behind her friend and team-mate Vicky Holland. The years that followed were tough on her mental health. But there was to be a happy ending to her career, winning Commonwealth silver for Wales in the Team Relay and a fairytale final race that brought home a European gold medal. So once you've finished your swim, get listening to Non's five defining moments as you cycle and run your way home!
At the close of the 2022 triathlon season, Non Stanford retired from professional racing and took up a new post as a coach at the Leeds High Performance Centre where she will be aiming to share her experience with the next generation. And what a range of experiences she has! She was a relative latecomer to triathlon, coming from a successful running background, but she had a meteoric rise to the top. Within 5 years she was Worlds U23 Champion, and she followed that up in 2013 by winning the ITU World Series championship in London. She experienced lows as well, with a horrible 2014 blighted by injury. In 2015 she began the comeback journey, made the GB team for the Rio 2016 Olympics, and finished a fine 4th behind teammate and housemate Vicky Holland. She capped a distinguished career by achieving a team relay silver for Wales at the Commonwealth Games and then shortly after that taking outright victory in the European championships. Have you ever wondered what it's like to be in the commentary box at one of these huge racing events? How do they know what to say and when? Do they see more than we do as spectators? This week, Alyssa and Haley welcome Vicky Holland onto the show to answer all of these questions. Adding to her professional career as a triathlete, Vicky is now commentating on races like Sub8, the Collins Cup, and much more. She shares what it's like to voice her opinions on live tv, how she chooses her language, and what it's like to be called the triathlon "expert". The duo also discusses Vicky's recent pregnancy, and how she feels this will impact her future racing. Hey folks, today we have a repeat of a show we did 3 years ago, in January 2018. At the time, we released it as 2 shows but today we’re combining them into one. My conversation with Malcolm Brown is just as timely now as it was then, maybe even more so. Malcolm is one of the foremost running coaches in the world. He knows a thing or two about helping athletes to run faster, and the resume of athletes he’s worked with is very impressive: Alistair and Jonny Brownlee, Vicky Holland, Non Stanford, Kelly Holmes, and Paula Radcliffe to name a few. In the first half of this podcast, we talk about a very simple subject: How to run faster. And the answer may surprise you. We cover: 3 basic principles underpinning the ability to run fast Why you should measure progress over 12 months and avoid changing the plan until that time 2 qualities possessed by all top athletes, and which you need in order to succeed Why it’s better to be a “Steady Eddie” than a “Shooting Star” The importance of being able to relish training and just enjoy being a runner Lower limb resilience and its influence on your success If you want to race faster than before, do this in training year-round Moving into the second half of the podcast, we chat about: Why endurance sports require a long term (several years) approach to training Why it’s important for athletes not to get too worried about the outcome of any particular single session The paradox that means no session is critical, but every session is critical, and why training matters but yet it doesn’t matter How reading the book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” can help your training Why you must be equally enthusiastic about recovery as you are about training Why you should aim to peak a maximum of 2 times per year How the best performances come when you’re committed physically, mentally, and emotionally To find out more about Simon’s SWAT programme, please click HERE Visit Simon's website for more information about his coaching programmes Links to all of Simon's social media channels can be found here For any questions please email Beth@TheTriathlonCoach.com

Non Stanford has been involved in and surrounded by sport for her entire life. She was destined for big things on the track and was 3x Welsh Schools 1500m champion, before being mentored by Dame Kelly Holmes. But injuries took their toll and Non made a successful transition into triathlon. She moved to Leeds and in 2012, she was crowned U23 World Champion. Just a year later, she became ITU World Champion. But Non has had her fair share of ups and downs since. 2014 was wiped out by injury, in 2016, she finished 4th behind GB teammate Vicky Holland at the Rio Olympics. At the end of 2018 Non left the Leeds set up to join Joel Filliol’s squad. She won WTS Hamburg in 2019, before having knee surgery at the end of the year which put her hopes of a second Olympics in doubt. You’ll hear: *Non open up about the disappointed after the Rio Olympics and ‘not dealing with it’ at the time *How she considered jacking it all in *The key thing she has learnt from Joel Filliol “You don’t need to push really hard in training to race well” *The downside of pressure and being a perfectionist *Her love for Geraint Thomas (as well as fiancee Aaron Royle, obvs), Taylor Swift doc and her Grandma’s welsh cakes Like what you heard? It’s not quite like walking on the moon, but it’s not far off, but sometimes when you are in the depths of injury and rehab, you think ‘will I ever get back to running?’ but this gives a glimmer of hope that normality will resume. I’ve been on a bike from about week 3 or 4 of rehab, but I am really restricted on the intensity I am able to do and until week 16 I am not allowed to go over 100 watts. I think I would struggle to get off my drive at 100 watts. I’m doing a lot on the indoor trainer and I have an altitude generator so even thought I am riding easy, I am getting some cardio vascular benefits. 3.30 What are you like as a patient?... Boulder’s Ryan Smith won the Leadville 100 trail run on Saturday night thanks to consistent second-half pacing that left his rivals unable to respond. It was the biggest win of his ultrarunning career. https://303triathlon.com/boulders-ryan-smith-wins-2019-leadville-100-with-consistent-second-half-pacing/ Endurance News: Last week we spoke about the Tokyo Olympic Test Event and the story of the two brits who were disqualified. We have a little more information on that story and information about a rule change that allowed for that disqualification. Remember when Alistair Brownlee threw is brother Jonathon across the line at the ________. The rule that disqualified this year's Brits was not in place when the Brownlee brothers raced. Follow up to the Womens Olympic test event last week: Learmonth and Taylor-Brown's disqualification meant compatriot Vicky Holland was bumped up to third, with Bermuda's Flora Duffy and Italy's Alice Betto taking first and second respectively. Two other Britons were also in the top ten; Non Stanford in seventh and Sophie Coldwell in ninth. Despite their feel-good ending being ruined, Taylor-Brown and Learmonth will no doubt take comfort in the knowledge they had no chance of qualifying for the GB Olympic team at this race regardless of their placing, due to results earlier this year. Holland was the only British woman eligible to automatically qualify for the Games here, thanks to her bronze medal in Rio, but the shortened distance meant the race lost its Olympic qualification status. Afterwards Holland was sympathetic to Learmonth and Taylor-Brown's situation. Though the American contingent was strong and deep, boasting five of the world’s top 20-ranked triathletes among the starting field of 65, none finished on the podium and only one, fifth-place finisher Summer Rappaport of Thornton, Colo., clinched a spot for the Tokyo Games with her performance. Under USA Triathlon’s Olympic qualifying rules, as many as two spots were at stake for American women in the competition. But one would have had to finish on the podium in order for the second spot to be available. The U.S. is expected to send three female triathletes to the Tokyo Games, and there will be other opportunities to qualify next spring. Don't Fry Bacon Naked: Know Your Sport's Rules: The rule states that "athletes who finish in a contrived tie situation, where no effort to separate their finish times has been made, will be disqualified". You might remember British Olympic medallists and brothers Alistair and Jonny Brownlee's show of sportsmanship at a 2016 World Triathlon Series race in Mexico. Legal at the time, an exhausted Jonny was helped to the line by his brother Alistair, who pushed him ahead at the finish, but an ITU disqualification rule, similar to the one employed [at the trial event], has since been introduced to stop any comparable incident. Speaking of rule changes? Do you remember when Chrissy Wellington had a flat during her second Ironman World Championship and Rebekah Keat tossed her a CO2 cartridge? I was reading Mike Reilly's book "Finding My Voice" and he talks about how the rule that allowed another competitor to provide assistance was changed. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/new-cycling-world-speed-record-neil-campbell-yorkshire-porsche-a9064286.html Discussion kickoff: Johannes Herrmann 1 week ago How as triathletes can we complain about people drafting or Patrick Lange littering 200 meters before the finish line in Kona - saying people are not upholding the rules - and find it stupid if someone upholds the rules. 1. Those are all pros earning their living with this sport and they should know the rules as every electirician and tax advisor for their particular job. 2. We should challenge the rules as such in order to make triathlon more attractive as a sport. Question which we should try to answer to challenge the existing rule : Would anyone care or even disqualify two athletes crossing the line together and finishing in for example 14th place jointly instead of 14th and 15th? My guess - no one cares. So change the rule! Since 2004 my guest today, Jack Maitland, has been focussed on helping the cream of British Triathlon talent to perform on a world stage. During that time athletes in his care (The Brownlees, Non Stanford, Vicky Holland, Jessica Learmonth, Gordon Benson and more) have won Olympic gold, silver, and bronze medals, occupied 5/6 places on the GB Olympic triathlon team, won multiple world, commonwealth and European titles, and generally put the Leeds Triathlon performance centre on the map as one of the world’s leading triathlon training locations. In 2017 Jack left his role to start working closely with Kirsten Steffenson, his partner and our other guest on today’s show. Their new venture, Sports Ashram, combines their passion for Yoga with Jack’s triathlon skills to provide a different approach to training and preparing for endurance events. In this conversation you will discover: Mobility, flexibility and strength - how a weekly yoga practice can enhance all 3 Why balance in your life will enhance athletic performance How mindfulness learned through yoga can be transferred into your triathlon training sessions Why yoga is a practice, not a performance The positive benefits for your sleep patterns which come from even 10 minutes of daily meditation Why recovery and rest must occupy the same priority in your weekly schedule as training How to improve your Heart Rate Variability through meditation and breathing Find out more about Jack and Kirsten here on Facebook The Sports Ashram Jack mentioned Dr. Alan Watkins and Complete Coherence - see the video HERE which explains this Dr Alan Watkins - How to be brilliant every single day The influence of Yoga on heart rate variability Yoga and heart rate variability - a comprehensive review of the literature To listen to Simon and Jack's earlier podcast https://simonward.podbean.com/e/simon-ward-and-jack-maitland/ To find out more about Simon’s coaching please visit his website here. This week I am so excited to welcome one of the world’s best female triathletes to the show. Georgia Taylor-Brown is a rising star, make no mistake about that. In her first full season in WTS triathlon she finished 3rd overall behind Vicky Holland and Katie Zaferes. That still only makes her the second best triathlete in the UK but she is on the up. It hasn’t always been this way. 4 years ago Georgia suffered an ankle injury which halted her career for almost 2 years. In our conversation this remarkable young lady will talk about: The devastating moment when the Doctor called to tell her about the first ankle injury Suffering more setbacks on the road to recovery When Georgia thought that having a nap would cure yet another foot issue Why injuries can be a good thing, and how to find the positives from them When you twist your ankle the day before you are due to race your first WTS event in your home city How even elite athletes suffer “impostor syndrome”, and that feeling when you are one of the leaders in a WTS race The GTB top 3 tips for successful racing To find out more about Georgia Taylor-Brown you can follow her on: Twitter - @georgiatb Instagram - georgiatb Facebook - Georgia Taylor-Brown For more information please go to www.SimonWardTriathlonCoach.com, or www.TheTriathlonCoach.com, or email Beth@thetriathloncoach.com.
This week my erstwhile friend Tim Heming is back in the chair as I travel to deepest Gloucestershire to pin him down and chat about the 2018 triathlon season, and discuss some of this season’s winner and losers. Listen in to our lively ‘debate’ and you’ll hear: Why we both think that the Commonwealth games messed up the season for a number of athletes That Tim is one of the most successful triathlon tipsters as he reveals just how good his Kona top 10 picks were this year ….. and then confesses that being pressured into including Lionel Sanders in his top 5 was a big error Which events did we pick as our ‘race of the year’ Why we both love Super League Our final comments on 2018 WTS, why Vicky Holland is awesome and Georgia Taylor-Brown is a start of the future, and who else to watch out for in 2019 Simon’s revolutionary plans to introduce darts into triathlon Highlights of the year - 1 now legendary British female Ironwoman and 2 male pros who defied the odds Here are links to several of the topics we discussed today: *Tim talked about the Super league Highlights and you can watch those here *The Man in the Halo - The incredible story of Tim Don’s comeback after a potentially life changing injury *The CancerFit.me project with Gill Fullen and Lucy Gossage For more information please go to www.SimonWardTriathlonCoach.com, or www.TheTriathlonCoach.com, or email Beth@thetriathloncoach.com.
After multiple failed attempts to fulfill her Olympic dream, Claire Michel found herself on the starting line at Copacabana Beach in 2016. She earned her spot in the sport of triathlon to represent her country on the world's stage in Rio de Janeiro. She had every intention to shine. Shortly into the swim, Claire knew that she was expending precious energy that could prove costly as her competitors swam in packs on either side of her. They were moving faster and using less energy while she swam by herself doing all the work. She stayed present with what was unfolding, Claire is not one to panic. She gave it everything she had on the day. She came out of the water four minutes down from the leader. She got on her bike and got to work. The race was not over yet. As she approached the transition area to begin the 2nd lap of the bike she saw the media frenzy pass her by. She knew that the cameras were not there to capture her performance. They were there to broadcast the action of the lead pack which included 2016 medalists Gwen Jorgenson, Nicola Spirig and Vicky Holland. For the first time in her triathlon career, Claire was being lapped on the bike. She knew immediately this meant that her day was over. Everything she dreamed of, ended in an instant. She was in a state of shock and emotional disruption but what ensued next gave her the fuel to pick herself up and set her sights on Tokyo 2020. Claire is no stranger to failure and she knows that one of the greatest gifts in failure is the opportunity to rise up again. This is exactly what she has shown herself and the world since that day in Rio. Claire now trains under the guidance of Paulo Sousa and is a member of the coveted Triathlon Squad. She is thriving in her environment and there is no doubt in our minds that she will be shining on the world's stage again. This is a great conversation that covers so much about what it takes to be a top-level athlete and human. Thank you for tuning in and sharing this show with your community. Please take a few moments to leave a review on Apple Podcast as this is an awesome way to support the show without spending a cent.

ONE STEP AHEAD: Chlorine. WORKOUT OF THE WEEK: Becoming heat adapted with a hot bath. HOT PROPERTY INTERVIEW - VICKY HOLLAND: Vicky Holland is a British triathlete who is part of the GB Olympic set up. At school Vicky was a nationally ranked swimmer before switching to athletics and taking up the 1500 metres. She didn’t start competing in triathlon until her second year at Loughborough University in 2005 when she was approached by British Triathlon. Vicky was selected for the London Olympics in 2012, however due to an unfortunate bike crash placed 26th, but since then she has become a figure head in the world of women’s triathlon. The 2014 Commonwealth Games were a positive turning point as she secured her first major individual medal with a Bronze and bettered that with a Gold in the Mixed Team Relay alongside the Brownlee brothers. Vicky has had a sensational 2015 season proving she is one of the world’s best. She has notched up two individual wins on the ITU circuit, one in Cape Town and one recently in Edmonton. Along with these impressive wins she has consistently achieved podium finishes throughout the season with a crucial 3rd at the Grand Final in Chicago, which has secured her place at the Rio Olympics.
