We recap an action-packed weekend of Huatulco World Cup and European Championship Tarragona racing, and look ahead to the fourth stop of the 2026 World Triathlon Championship Series in Quiberon, where Cassandre Beaugrand headlines a home race, Alex Yee tries to reel in men's leader Vasco Vilaça, and the first Serie Mixed Team Relay takes over on Sunday. You can watch all the WTCS Quiberon action with a Race Pass on TriathlonLive.tv
Alistair Brownlee is taking on Norseman, adding one of triathlon's most iconic races to his calendar and giving fans another reason to follow his post-professional career. WTCS Alghero delivered exactly what we've come to expect from the series. Vasco Vilaça and Cassandre Beaugrand took the wins, the men's race featured crashes and drama throughout, and the women's race was simply outstanding. We also discuss why WTCS continues to produce some of the best racing in the sport and how much the broadcast product has improved in recent years. Supertri Blenheim also features, with a surprisingly strong field assembled despite the ongoing challenges around actually watching the racing. Attention then turns to T100 San Francisco. The venue is iconic, but with Hayden Wilde on the start line the question becomes whether anyone can stop him. We finish with Ironman Hamburg, where Laura Philipp and Solveig Løvseth headline the women's race, and whether the long-discussed eight-hour barrier could finally fall. Tim is finally back. We start with the Giro d'Italia and Maya Kingma's move into professional cycling, as she continues to show that triathletes can successfully make the transition to the pro peloton. Cassandre Beaugrand then adds another achievement to an already remarkable year by breaking the French 5km record. Supertri Austin follows, where the conversation turns to what has happened to the series. Once one of the most exciting products in the sport, Austin felt like a shadow of what Supertri used to be. Ironman Lanzarote saw Sam Laidlow get the better of Patrick Lange, while Lucy Charles-Barclay returned to long-distance racing with a dominant victory. We finish with WTCS Alghero. This week on Talking Triathlon we are back and take stock of where the sport sits heading into 2026. We start with what we noticed over the break, running through the triathlon headlines that shaped the off season and set the tone for the year ahead. We then look at the updated PTO World Rankings and the impact of changes to how they are now measured. With the rankings now closely tied to the T100 series, it is no surprise that the athletes who raced and won the series are sitting at the top, with Kate Waugh and Hayden Wilde both ranked world number one. We also question how legitimate the rankings are now and what they are really designed to represent. From there we look ahead to 2026 as a whole, talking through the major race series, what we are most excited to see unfold and what we hope the sport delivers over the next twelve months. We break that down across Ironman, WTCS, T100, Supertri and Challenge, discussing how each series is shaping up and where the big storylines could emerge as the season gets underway. The 2025 season rewind continues with the newly crowned Men's U23 World Champion, Britain's rising star, Oliver Conway, joining the World Triathlon Podcast this week. Oli looks back over the processes and rapid progressions that helped him soar from Junior European Cups start lines to World Cup gold and WTCS debut power moves in the space of twelve short months, all the while juggling competition with training and the demands of studying at Nottingham University. "I think just last year, I can name maybe one or two races that were actually decent. I just think I got quite unlucky. I think that's probably why I went straight into not having an off-season and training straightaway, just because I was quite motivated to show what level I can race at. I just didn't really feel like I showed it last year. It was quite frustrating.""That's probably half the reason why in at Worlds I tried to drive the pack, because I don't really wanna be known as someone who can win the race just from the run. I've obviously still got quite a bit to work in the swim because I'm nowhere near there, I just really try to work on all three and so I can be the sort of best and most complete triathlete I can be."
The 23 year old American's steady rise in the elite ranks continued in 2025 with his first WTCS podium in Weihai. This week on Talking Triathlon we react to the biggest shake-up the T100 has seen yet, as the series announces massive changes to its 2026 format. We discuss what the removal of athlete contracts could mean for the future of professional racing, how splitting the season into four standalone men's and four standalone women's races could impact broadcast numbers, and whether increased per-event prize money will be enough to drive interest and secure top-tier fields. We then move into race coverage, where Hayden Wilde and Kate Waugh delivered commanding wins at the T100 Wollongong. But it was the WTCS racing that stole the spotlight. In the women's race, both Cassandre Beaugrand and Beth Potter struggled and saw their world title hopes fade, while Lisa Tertsch produced an incredible performance to win on the day and secure the world championship. In the men's race, Matt Hauser capped off a perfect season, becoming World Champion and delivering Australia's first WTCS world title since 2005. We finish the episode by looking ahead to the 70.3 World Championship start lists and the athletes who could shape the world title battle. Haven't been to a technical college in the last 3 years? The transformation is striking, and it's only a glimpse of the reinvention higher education faces in the next decade. In this episode of The TechEd Podcast, host Matt Kirchner talks with Layla Merrifield, President of the Wisconsin Technical College System, about why the future of higher education depends on bold innovation. Merrifield doesn't mince words: credit loss should be a thing of the past, neurodivergent inclusion is an imperative, and U.S. colleges can no longer “rest on our laurels” as global competition accelerates. From the arrival of Workforce Pell, to personalized student success plans, to stackable credentials, Merrifield argues that technical and community colleges must evolve—or risk irrelevance. Her perspective offers educators and employers alike a roadmap for building systems that are more inclusive, more responsive, and more essential than ever.Listen to learn:The implications of expanding Pell Grants to short-term, high-demand programs (8–15 weeks) and how this reshapes access to workforce training. How Wisconsin's technical college system compares to others in terms of state oversight, innovation, and responsiveness—and what models elsewhere might teach WTCS and vice versa. How “credit loss should be a thing of the past”—why stackable credentials and seamless transfer paths are non-negotiable.Why Layla argues for a universal design for learning that accommodates neurodivergent learners (and why it's the best mode for all students). Why Merrifield believes technical colleges must “evolve or be left behind” in a world of AI, disruption, and global competition.Resources in this Episode:Learn more about the Wisconsin Technical College System: www.wtcsystem.eduSee more on the episode page!We want to hear from you!
