The Efficiency Fix: Why Your Training Isn't Working (Yet)

EPISODE SUMMARY:  Warrior Woman, if you feel like you're doing all the things in your training—lifting, running, tracking your food—but you're still not seeing the results you want… this episode is for you. Today, we're talking about efficiency—because you can only scale efficiency. If your training isn't efficient, if you don't own your movements, if your execution isn't locked in—adding more work, more reps, more weight is just scaling dysfunction. And dysfunction doesn't build strength. It builds frustration, burnout, and injury. I'll walk you through the Hierarchy of Training Needs—my four-layer approach to making your training efficient, effective, and powerful. We're breaking down the most common inefficiencies I see in women's training, why they're keeping you weak and stuck, and the exact process I use inside Warrior School to help my women build strong, lean, athletic bodies. If you're tired of working hard and getting nowhere, press play now. Let's make your training work for you—not against you. KEY TAKEAWAYS:

Show notes I share the first part of a five-part series focused on how you should approach exercise, specifically addressing the crucial role of strength training in creating the body you want.  I debunk myths about fitness post-40, presenting a new, empowered approach that prioritises strength, energy, and confidence over traditional diet and exercise narratives. I discuss adapting exercise to your current life stage, and highlight that change is not only possible but achievable through strategic, informed strength training and self-prioritisation.  Key Takeaways: Strength Training is Essential: Strength training is highlighted as a cornerstone for women's fitness, particularly in the context of hormonal changes and body composition shifts that occur in the late thirties and beyond.  Navigating Through Noise: The episode discusses the importance of cutting through the fitness industry's 'noise' and focusing on strategies that offer clear, actionable guidelines tuned to women's unique physiological needs.  Old Game vs. New Game: A comparison is drawn between outdated fitness ideologies focused on weight loss and restriction ('Old Game') versus a more holistic approach ('New Game') emphasising strength, energy, and confidence.  Prioritising Health and Fitness: The importance of making one's health and fitness a top priority to maintain energy, functionality, and the ability to lead a full life is underscored 00:00 Welcome to the Warrior School Podcast: Women and Exercise 00:50 The Power of Strength Training for Women 00:54 Navigating the Noise in Women's Health and Fitness 01:20 Embracing Change: Fitness Beyond Your 40s 03:39 Old Game vs. New Game: A Fresh Approach to Fitness 04:38 Living Big: The New Game of More 09:26 Prioritising Health and Fitness for Energy and Power 12:10 Creating an Environment for Success 17:40 Owning the Movement: Beyond the Gym 22:06 The Essentials of Strength Training 27:50 Building a Foundation: The Importance of Body Weight Training 36:47 Designing a Training Program That Works for You 38:35 Training Needs for Females: A Comprehensive Guide 39:00 Customising Your Training: Athletes vs. Strength Focus 40:42 Creating Your Vision: The Foundation of Fitness Success 42:18 Adapting Training to Your Current Season of Life 43:27 Building Your Foundation: Starting with Strength Training 46:12 Advancing Your Training: Lifting Heavy and Building Muscle 57:46 Warrior School Testimonials: Transformations and Triumphs Related podcast episodes Episode 273: Q&A Special Part 2 (timestamp 19-minutes) Episode 262: Transforming your training with Own the Movement Workshop Episode 233: How heavy should I be lifting to get stronger and build the body I love? Acquiring talent in the fast growing consumer market of ASEAN – that's what we are going to talk about in this segment today.  With over 5,100 branches across 60 countries around the world, our guest is leading workforce solutions company Adecco.  The Switzerland-based firm provides a comprehensive range of workforce solutions and consulting services which includes junior to mid-level talent acquisition, temporary staffing, outsourcing, as well as jobs training and reskilling. The Fortune 500 company connects over 700,000 people with job opportunities that make the most out of their skills every given day.  Closer to home, Adecco has a strong presence in major markets within the ASEAN region, such as Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. Take Singapore for instance, the Fortune 500 company established its presence in 1985 and currently helps over 1,400 people in new careers each year.  With ASEAN as a trade bloc being one of the top 5 economies in the world, what will this mean in terms of staffing needs and what growth opportunities does this present for Adecco?  How is the firm upskilling workers to navigate structural changes in major ASEAN economies? And how do such structural changes increase the value of a recruitment firm like Adecco?  On Under the Radar, Drive Time's finance presenter posed these questions to Betul Genc, SVP and Head of ASEAN, Adecco.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Stephen Seiler has been a guest on the podcast 3 times now and is one of our most poplar guests ever. He also holds the record for our longest podcast, over 2 hours!   In 2018 I was fortunate enough to listen to Stephen speak at the Endurance Coaching Summit hosted by TrainingPeaks in Manchester. His talk on polarised training had me hooked, and I've been a convert to this type of training ever since. I can personally vouch for its role in helping me to stay fit and healthy through the pandemic and remain relatively injury free. Something I cannot say about my training methods in my 30's and 40's.   Since this podcast, polarised training and Zone 2 training have continued to grow in popularity. There's no doubt in my mind that while there may be other approaches to developing fitness for endurance events, this one offers the most sustainable long term benefits for both health and fitness. You may have heard my previous podcasts with Dr Phil Maffetone, Dr Dan Plews and Prof Paul Laursen. Each of these eminent coaches have spoken of methodology that has polarised training at its heart.  This is a loooong podcast, almost 2 hours, and the time absolutely flew by. Stephen has such a great message, it's easy to listen to his stories and experiences. I have absolute confidence that you will find so much value in this conversation, and that it will benefit your own training or coaching. Please enjoy this show as we talk about: The ‘holy trinity' of monitoring intensity and why you must learn to use all three Why 95% of endurance athletes can thrive using just three training zones The simple, three step method for determining training zones without visiting a sports science lab How the African distance runners use internal measures of intensity for much of the time and only use pace when preparing for races What the 80/20 numbers really mean and how they apply to you Why the principles of polarised training are even more important if you have only 8-10 hours to train each week Hierarchy of Training Needs - what should come first when developing your fitness Stephen Seiler posts a lot of good information on Twitter. The paper results center on a survey sent to a multitude of French industries, and although the sampling is from only one country, 15 years ago, the findings are very illustrative of common issues among safety professionals within their organizations.  David used this paper as a reference for his PhD thesis, and we are going to dig into each section to discuss. The paper's abstract introduction reads: What are the training needs of company preventionists? An apparently straightforward question, but one that will very quickly run into a number of difficulties. The first involves the extreme variability of situations and functions concealed behind the term preventionist and which stretch way beyond the term's polysemous nature. Moreover, analysis of the literature reveals that very few research papers have endeavoured to analyse the activities associated with prevention practices, especially those of preventionists. This is a fact, even though prevention-related issues and preventionist responsibilities are becoming increasingly important. Discussion Points:The paper, reported from French industries, focuses heavily on safety in areas like occupational therapies, ergonomics, pesticides, hygiene, etc.The downside of any “survey” result is that we can only capture what the respondents “say” or self-report about their experiencesMost of the survey participants were not originally trained as safety professionalsThere are three subgroups within the survey:High school grads with little safety trainingPost high school with two-year tech training program paths to safety workUniversity-educated levels including engineers and managersThere were six main positions isolated within this study:Prevention Specialists - hold a degree in safety, high status in safety managementField Preventionists - lesser status, operations level, closer to front linesPrevention Managers - executive status, senior management, engineers/project managersPreventionist Proxies - may be establishing safety programs, in opposition to the organization, chaotic positionsBasic Coordinators - mainly focused on training othersUnstructured - no established safety procedures, may have been thrown into this roleSo many of the respondents felt isolated and frustrated within the organizations– which continues to be true in the safety professionThere is evidence in this paper and others that a large portion of safety professionals “hate their bosses” and feel ‘great distress' in their positionsOnly 2.5% felt comfortable negotiating safety with managementTakeaways:Safety professionals come from widely diverse backgroundsTraining and education are imperativeThese are complex jobs that often are not on siteRole clarity is very low, leading to frustration and job dissatisfactionSend us your suggestions for future episodes, we are actively looking! Quotes:“I think this study was quite a coordinated effort across the French industry that involved a lot of different professional associations.” - David“It might be interesting for our readers/listeners to sort of think about which of these six groups do you fit into and how well do you reckon that is a description of what you do.” - Drew“I thought it was worth highlighting just how much these different [job] categories are determined by the organization, not by the background or skill of the safety practitioner.” - Drew“[I read a paper that stated:] There is a significant proportion of safety professionals that hate their bosses …and it was one of the top five professions that hate their bosses and managers.” - David“You don't have to go too far in the safety profession to find frustrated professionals.” - David“There's a lot to think on and reflect on…it's one sample in one country 15 years ago, but these are useful reflections as we get to the practical takeaways.” - David “The activity that I like safety professionals to do is to think about the really important parts of their role that add the most value to the safety of work, and then go and ask questions of their stakeholders of what they think are the most valuable parts of the role, …and work toward alignment.” - David“Getting that role clarity makes you feel that you're doing better in your job.” - Drew Resources:Link to the Safety Science ArticleThe Safety of Work PodcastThe Safety of Work on LinkedInFeedback@safetyofwork.com

Greg adds that people don't read manuals or safety material available from the FAA and NTSB. Recent accidents involve a range of general aviation planes. Most wreckage is removed and stored for later evaluation, adding concerns that volatile evidence is being lost. Recommendations to improve safety are slow coming in recent years. When safety findings are issued, the format isn't effectively sharing the information.

This is that training needs to be highly uncomfortable/painful to be effective. This is a common narrative and is visible in “motivational” training slogans like:no pain no gain. The pain you feel today will be the strength you feel tomorrow.Use the pain as fuel and keep on going. You push through the pain because results matter. It is a common misconception pushed by the fitness industry that training has to be uncomfortable to be effective. This isn’t true. And it certainly isn’t motivating. And it’s dangerous to think that pain is an acceptable part of training. If you have any questions about this episode or would like to learn about how we may be able to support you, you can go to www.fearlessmovement.co and send us a message.

While pitchers and catchers report in less than a month to Clearwater, there's still time to dissect what to make of the Phillies offseason and how it will impact this team and organization for the coming 2020 season. Joining us this week to discuss it more is John Stolnis, writer and contributor at TheGoodPhight.com and host of the Hittin' Season podcast. We dove into tons of Phillies talk this week! But first, who do we think - and want - to win the Super Bowl? Chiefs or 49'ers? (approx. 3:45)From there, we talked about how the talk in Sixers Nation of trading Ben Simmons needs to stop, and Ray Didinger recent said the Sixers may not make it to the postseason. (approx. 9:25)We then got into the mascot who apparently has become a menace to society. Gritty allegedly punched a 13-year old kid. Aside from that storyline, we also discussed how this Flyers team is looking pretty good at the moment. (approx. 21:05)This week on the Highbrow Segment, we gave our thoughts on how NCAA men's basketball has been trending this season. Are we enthusiastic for March Madness, and where is this collegiate sport heading? (approx. 33:05)Then on our Lowbrow Segment, gave one under-the-rader player in Philly sports history that a team got rid of, but should have kept because that player might have propelled the team to greater success. (approx. 42:35)What we're throwing down on the Table this week is an in-depth interview with John Stolnis from The Good Phight as Phillies Spring Training is right around the corner. First, we discussed the Phillies spending philosophy during this offseason. We also reflected on Matt Klentak's tenure as GM over the past four seasons. From there, it was bullpen talk. What should Adam Haseley's expectations be for this coming season in centerfield, and should we also be concerned about third-base? All of this and much more this week on the Table! (approx. 49:15)

This week’s guest is another person I have been chasing for a long time. Stephen Seiler has written extensively about ‘polarised training’ and I have used many of the principles he talks about in his papers and presentations in both my own training and that of the athletes I have the honour of working with. There is no doubt in my mind that while there may be other approaches to developing fitness for endurance events, this one offers the most sustainable long term benefits for both health and fitness. You may have heard my previous podcasts with Dr Phil Maffetone, Dr Dan Plews and Prof Paul Laursen and each of these eminent coaches has spoken of methodology that has polarised training at its heart.  This is a loooong podcast, almost 2 hours, and the time absolutely flew by. Stephen has such a great message and it’s easy to listen to his stories and experiences. I have absolute confidence that you will find so much value in this conversation that will be of benefit to your own training or coaching. Please enjoy this show as we talk about: The ‘holy trinity’ of monitoring intensity and why you must learn to use all three Why 95% of endurance athletes can thrive using just three training zones The simple, three step method for determining training zones without visiting a sports science lab How the African distance runners use internal measures of intensity for much of the time and only use pace when preparing for races What the 80/20 numbers really mean and how they apply to you Why the principles of polarised training are even more important if you have only 8-10 hours to train each week Hierarchy of Training Needs - what should come first when developing your fitness Here are links to some of the references in our discussion: Hierarchy of Training Needs. This is the diagram on his Twitter account representing this theory The first Seiler paper that I read, "Intervals, Thresholds, and Long Slow Distance: the Role of Intensity and Duration in Endurance Training” “Experimental Challenges” 12 “aerobic” challenges created by Stephen Seiler, for you to attempt in 2019 Stephen Seiler posts a lot of good information on Twitter. GUEST BIO: My guest on today’s show helps developers to take a step up in their skill set with a focus on making complex topics approachable, regardless of skill level. He is a Microsoft MVP for .NET, has authored seven courses for Pluralsight and has delivered more than 300 technical presentations across the United States and Europe.   EPISODE DESCRIPTION: Phil’s guest on today’s I.T Career Energizer podcast is Jeremy Clark. Currently, his focus is on helping IT professionals to quickly improve their skills. He has authored several courses for Pluralsight, a platform that enables developers to assess their current skill levels and identify the right training path for them. Over the years, Jeremy Clark has delivered more than 300 technical presentations at conferences, throughout the world. He has also spent over 9 years of his career sharing his knowledge as a consultant and mentor. KEY TAKEAWAYS: (00.49) – Can you maybe tell us a little bit about some of the courses you've written for Pluralsight. To date, Jeremy has produced 7 courses for that platform. He wrote his C# Interfaces course, largely because as a new developer he struggled to understand what interfaces were. The same is true of his Practical Introduction to Dependency Injection course. Most people get introduced to dependency injection backwards. Typically, they get given an application that has a DI container and just left to try to figure things out themselves. Jeremy currently speaks at conferences on about 20 subjects. All of which he has struggled with, at some point. He finds helping others to get over the speed bumps he faced to be very rewarding. (2.33) – Can you please share a unique career tip with the I.T. career audience? Jeremy’s advice is to get involved with people in the industry as much as possible. Make it a goal to attend a meetup, or something similar, at least once a month. When you do that your world gets a lot bigger, really quickly. You learn so much. Often, you will find people working with the same tools as you, but using them in a different way. Or, you will come across developers who are doing similar work to you. But, are using tools you do not know much about. Either way, you get to learn a lot from them. Unfortunately, at the moment, Jeremy is not able to do this as much as he would like. The nearest meetups and user groups are at least an hour and a half drive away. So, he struggles to attend them regularly. But, to some extent, attending conferences fills in the gap for him. Attending and speaking at them means that he still gets to interact with others who are working in the industry. (5.16) What would you recommend to someone who cannot get to meetups, conferences or other physical events? Right now, there are not many effective virtual groups for people to join. But, that is something that Jeremy is trying to change. In the meantime, his recommendation is that people listen to podcasts as a way of learning. Live coding is good too. On twitch streaming, there is usually some interaction and you can follow individual coders. (6.55) Can you share with us your worst IT career moment and what you learned from that experience. Fortunately, Jeremy has not had any of those oh my goodness I’ve just deleted the production database moments. But, he has found himself working on projects where there are at least 3 layers of project managers sitting between you and the end user. That sort of project setup makes it is all but impossible to come up with something that meets the end users needs. You just can’t get close enough to them to find out what would actually be helpful. Everything gets filtered through layers of project managers and the important things are lost in translation. Usually, things get bogged down to the point where great solutions get left on the shelf. In the end, progress slows and the project gets cancelled. These days Jeremy recognizes those flawed projects and does not get involved. Instead, he focuses on working on things where he stands a good chance of having a positive impact. (9.20) – What was your best career moment? Jeremy’s biggest successes have come from his habit of getting to know what his end users needed. For example, he was in the office one day speaking to a group of administrative staff. While he was there chatting to them he ended up watching how they were working with the system. He noticed that they were spending quite a bit of time creating a report to print out to help them to carry out their job effectively. So, he said to them would it be helpful if I put a print screen on the admin screen. Of course, they said yes. It took him just 5 minutes to do it. Yet that simple change saved the admin team a huge amount of time and stress every single day. They had not thought to request the change because they had assumed it would take too long and cost too much to have it done. Every time Jeremy spends time working alongside the end users he finds that he is able to make a huge difference to how easy it is to get their job done. (13.44) – Can you tell us what excites you about the future of the IT industry and careers? The fact that we can change the world really easily is something Jeremy finds really exciting about the IT industry. (15.10) – What first attracted you to a career in IT? The idea of being able to automate tedious tasks is what first appealed to Jeremy. It all started while he was working as a hotel receptionist to pay his way through university. At the time, every week, the assistant manager spent hours putting the schedule together using Excel. It was a long and tedious task. There was a lot of cutting and pasting involved because she had to produce multiple sheets. One for management, another for the union and several others. Jeremy realized he could set things up so that she entered the information once and it populated all of the other formats automatically. Doing that made him realize he could get paid well for doing something similar in other workplaces. (16.27) – What is the best career advice you have ever received? That advice came from David Neal. He has a great saying – You don’t have to ask permission to be awesome. It does not matter what approach you take to the job. As long as the results are awesome, your boss will be happy. For example, if you have a situation where test driving development will just take too long. Just get on with it and produce the software. Get it done and your manager will not care that you did not follow the test-driven development path. (17.18) - Conversely, what is the worst career advice you've ever received? Someone once told Jeremy to just do what he was paid to do. At the time he was working as a consultant. The person he was speaking to was of the opinion that he should just do what he was hired to do. Even if he could see that the company he was working for was heading in the wrong direction. This approach is not one Jeremy feels comfortable with. Instead, he likes to dig a little deeper and get a better understanding of what he is being asked to do and why. For example, on one job he asked to go into the field to see how the software he was working on was being put to work by the end-users. The project manager appreciated that approach. As a result of finding out about the customer's pain points were the rewrite was much better than it would have otherwise have been. As Jeremy says, people don’t hire him to be quiet and do what he is told. They hire him because they want to tap into his problem-solving skills. (18.44) – If you were to begin your IT career again, right now, what would you do? Jeremy would get involved with other users as soon as possible. It is a good way to learn a lot and it is a fast way to build up your network. If you do that, finding your next role becomes a lot easier. (20.10) – What are you currently focusing on in your career? Jeremy is currently working in the training space, so his focus is there. He is doing a lot more conference work. Mostly because it is such an effective way to reach others. It feels great to stand up there, explain something and see the light bulbs go on. (21.11) – What is the number one non-technical skill that has helped you the most in your IT career? Understanding the business rather than just how to code has helped Jeremy’s career. Knowing what the business you are working in is doing makes a huge difference. Everything you produce is so much more relevant and effective. (22.18) - What do you do to keep your own IT career energized? Periodically, Jeremy pauses and refocuses. He finds that keeps him grounded in reality. For example, now that he is in the training space he works to understand how ordinary developers see things. Doing this makes sure that the tools and training he produces are truly relevant to them. He thinks about how they are going to perceive and navigate what he produces. Jeremy constantly asks himself how can I make the world a better place? Right now, with the skill set he possesses that means producing great software for his end-users. (23.43) – What do you do away from technology? Jeremy reads a lot. Right now, he is especially interested in finding out how the brain works and mindfulness. He also enjoys hiking. (24.57) – Phil asks Jeremy to share a final piece of career advice with the audience. Jeremy believes that everyone has something of value to share. From a fairly early stage in his IT career, he felt the urge to speak at conferences. But, he didn’t do it because he believed that he had nothing of value to share. Eventually, he realized that you do not have to be an expert to be able to share your knowledge with others. There is always someone on the path just behind you who can learn from what you know. BEST MOMENTS: (1.39) JEREMY – "Most people get introduced to dependency injection backwards." (3.29) JEREMY – "When you attend meetups, your world quickly gets a lot bigger." (17.16) JEREMY – "You don't need permission to be awesome." (21.00) JEREMY – "When I speak in front of 100 developers, I can impact them all. It is really rewarding." (25.41) JEREMY – "Help someone behind you on the path. Everyone has something useful to share." Your Learning Curve Never Sounded So Good Ryan Kooiman joined Standard Motor Products full time as a Technician Training Developer in 2010. Previously he was the lead tech/driveability specialist at a 20 bay independent shop in Michigan. He is the founder of West Michigan Auto Repair Society, chairman of the MI chapter of SAE, has attended numerous ASE test writing workshops. He has appeared on TV shows such as the CBS Early Show and co-hosted Car and Driver Radio along with Road and Track Radio. Ryan brings his years of hands-on experience in the shop to the audience in a manner they can relate to and put to use immediately. In early 2013, Ryan was promoted to manager of the Professional Training Seminars training group, overseeing the scheduling and the work of the SMP training staff.  In December 2013, Ryan was promoted to Director of Training.  In this role, Ryan oversees the operations of the SMP Corporate Training Center in Irving, TX; oversees the operations and development of the Pro Training group, as well as works closely with the Marketing and Product teams at SMP to ensure that their products and promotions are what they need to be for the automotive technician. Check out Ryan’s other episodes (https://remarkableresults.biz/?s=ryan+kooiman) . Bob Pattengale is the National Training Manager for Bosch. Bob has over 30 years of automotive experience with stops at OE Dealerships, independent repair shops, technician training, and equipment sales.  Bob is a contributing writer for Motor Magazine. Bob also served as the SAE Service Technician’s Society President in 2001 and 2002. Jon Forro is the owner of AST and an automotive Instructor. Key Talking Points: Accessing specific training needs will become the primary goal of all trainers, shop owners, and technicians. Going into training with a pre-assessment helps determine the strengths and weaknesses on the topic/subject. You find out the specific needs of the students. Coming out you will find out what you learned These pre and post assessments will show the value of the training need and investment No more certificates of attendance. Student earns a certificate of achievement based on a test of the class material. Bosh is doing this. Standard has three training options: Leader-led and hands-on On-Line Open House Introductions Finding the right classes continues to be a challenge. There is a larger need than the training available. On-line training is a strong option. Shop owner needs the courage to find their individual technician’s skill set and find the right training to fill that gap and invest in the training. The technician needs the courage to assess their competency and work on their skills as a professional. Technicians need to increase their responsibility to improve their value to their profession and have the desire to learn as much as they can The student must absorb the knowledge and then put the new learning into play in their work. Practicing the principles from any training helps solidify the new training. Do homework and show the shop owner you learned the material You will not remember everything in a seminar. You’ve got to re-read and put the theory into practice Bob Pattengale learned that the ‘Why’ of everything he did as a technician was most important to his ability to learn. Commitment comes from the shop owner, the technician and the trainer Does the shop have the proper tools that reflect the training that is provided? Do not rule out ‘basic training’. A refresher course on basic electricity could be a game changer for even the most seasoned technician. Basic principles in electricity is necessary or you will be stuck as the future unfolds. Legacy technicians may not go to a basic electricity class because their ego won’t let them. In this case they do on-line training. Being able to interpret data is...

We discuss why companies may be OVER-training with full cyber warfare scenarios......and unnecessarily losing time. Organizations can't solve the global cybersecurity crisis overnight, so why do they spend time skilling up warriors to protect the national grid, instead of their own business systems? (unless the grid IS your business...) Zvi also expands on: How cyber range training can quickly become overkill Why cyber talent development needs a scalpel, not a chainsaw How to train your staff as quickly as possible About CloudShare CloudShare helps software organizations grow revenue, increase efficiency and improve quality by making it easy to replicate complex on-premise IT environments in the cloud, with specialized solutions for training, sales enablement, and sandboxing.
