In this episode of Work in Progress, I am joined by Scott Pulsipher, president of Western Governors University to talk about how the online university flips the standard postsecondary education model to create individualized learning plans for each student. We also discuss the latest WGU offering: a new fund designed to help prepare students for jobs in nursing, which is now facing a critical shortage nationwide. Since its founding in 1997. Western Governors University (WGU) has prided itself in innovating the way higher education prepares students to enter the workforce. Pulsipher says at the heart of that continuing innovation is the idea that every person is unique, with unique needs and circumstances, as they enter into the workforce or seek a career that will provide them with economic mobility. "It starts with a very simple truth: there is inherent worth in every individual and that we believe – and know, in fact – if given the opportunity, each one has something big to contribute. Everyone has the innate capacity for learning. It doesn't mean that we learn the same way or that we go at the same pace," he explains. "We apply that by just simply recognizing everyone can learn and everyone has the opportunity to contribute, so how do we make these pathways as accessible and affordable and traversable for every individual?" Pulsipher says that translates into offering individualized and personalized plans for each student, along with a mentor to help them navigate the pathway to their career goals. "The program mentor is someone who's with you from the day you start your program until the day you graduate. Their job isn't to just augment your instruction and your learning, but to also help you deal with all the challenges, disruptions, offsets that you may have. It's like a bit of a secret sauce into helping our students complete at much higher rate than they might otherwise." Another key to helping the students, according to Pulsipher, is working with employers across the country, accessing what skills they are looking for right now and in the near future. "We always adapting and advancing the curriculum to be relevant to the world of work. Certainly, technology's increasing the pace of that change. We know the shelf life of skills is declining or the knowledge is declining, meaning you're going to have to make sure that what you're learning. Our curriculum is directly relevant to the opportunities you see within the next three- to five year horizon, two- to three-year horizon, one- to two-year horizon. "We're always leveraging our engagements with our employer networks – we have over 250 employers – so that we're always ingesting that workforce data back into the design and development of our curriculum. I think one of the key things that our students rely upon us is for the relevancy of what they've learned to the jobs they want to pursue," he tells me. One field that is in big demand right now is health care. For example, there's as many as 40,000 unfilled jobs for nurses across the country right now. "We know that number is going to keep growing because of the aging population and the higher demand for the health care services that are needed. (WGU) is a nationally-scaled provider of nursing programs. We're an institution that operates in the most states for pre-licensure nursing programs, we're now in over 20 different states. "This allows us to leverage that scale to solve a strategic workforce gap that exists in health care. The hospitals, health systems, community health centers that need those qualified individuals, here is a talent provider now that can do that with a high degree of relevancy and really high pass rates," says Pulsipher. That combination has led WGU to partner with Social Finance to create the Reinvesting in Nursing Education and Workforce (ReNEW) Fund, which "aims to address these challenges by helping to cover the cost of the final two years of WGU's...

Higher education has long been on an unsustainable trajectory, with rising costs - and subsequent debt passed on to students - hindering the ability of many to get ahead. Initially intending to stay at WGU only for a short term, Clarkson was drawn in by the innovative model of the institution and the opportunity to contribute to something bigger.Underlining WGU's extraordinary growth from 2,000 to 132,000 active students, Clarkson attributes this success to the quality of education, commitment to innovation, and their focus on governmental relations. He discusses how WGU matured alongside internet technology, constantly learning to leverage it to better support students, and developing a unique model providing students with five points of contact within the faculty.However, the institution's expansion was not just about growing numbers but also about creating meaningful relationships with elected officials. WGU, originally founded by states for states, has never lost sight of its roots. The Government Relations team, including Clarkson, focuses on advancing policies that enhance access to education and uphold the credibility of a WGU degree. As a result, they've established partnerships with 13 affiliate states, creating opportunities for thousands of potential students.According to Clarkson, when partnering with a state, WGU doesn't focus on what they can gain but rather what they can contribute to the state and their students. Through this student-centric approach and consistent advocacy, WGU has grown into an institution beyond Clarkson's imagination.Bonnell's sage advice is inspired by Clarkson's favorite saying, "Don't leave 10 minutes before the miracle happens." Today on Conflict Managed we are joined by Derriell Springfield, Strategic Partnerships Manager, Southeast Region, for Western Governors University.  A native of Memphis, Tennessee, Derriell Springfield is a two-time graduate of Tennessee State University located in Nashville where he received both his bachelor's degree and a master's degree in Mathematics. In July of 2009, he moved to Johnson City, TN to be with his lovely wife, Kiana, who is currently a physician with the Jackson Clinic specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology. With such an ambitious spouse, Derriell decided to use his time in Johnson City to earn his doctorate degree in Education Leadership and Policy Analysis. Derriell started his tenure at Western Governors University (WGU) in 2014 serving as a Course Instructor with the General Education Algebra/Stats team but is currently in the role of Strategic Partnerships Manager for WGU Tennessee. In his free time, Derriell likes reading, running, working out, golfing, tennis, and shopping. In fact, he may have a bit of a suit and bow tie addiction. He also performs a regular test of his mental grit by participating in Tough Mudder, a 12-mile, military obstacle, annually. He loves music and has a keen appreciation for the way different instruments come together to create perfect harmony. Interestingly enough, it is not uncommon for Derriell to “get lost in the music.” To sum all of this up, Derriell just likes to have fun while abiding by a quote from Calvin Coolidge, “Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence.” This is made evident by his pursuit of higher education as a first-generation graduate, his commitment and loyalty to his community, and his own love for meeting new and interesting people. Western Governors University (WGU) is a large online, non-profit, competency-based university based in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. The College of Business has a total enrollment of over 41,000 students, 11,000 of which were enrolled in graduate business programs as of December 2020. The majority of its students are non-traditional and/or come from under-served populations. WGU is working to develop innovative products that address access and equitable attainment, creating pathways between talent and opportunity. In this webinar, learn about its competency-based approach to online education and its faculty model providing students with personalized support as they progress toward completion of a credential. On this week's episode of Humanize Your Workplace, I am joined by Jason Thompson. Jason Thompson is a thought leader in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, having spent the past twenty-five years building DE&I programs in sports, health care, technology, and education. Jason is currently the Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I) at Western Governors University (WGU) one of the largest fully accredited online universities in the US with over 121,000 students. Thompson is regularly sought out for advice and leadership on how to create, grow, measure, and sustain a DE&I program by DE&I officers across the corporate and non-profit sectors struggling to have their DE&I efforts impact their organization. Thompson developed the initial diversity and inclusion program for the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee and created the D&I scored cards to measure diversity within the US Olympic movement. As a result of this path-breaking innovation the USOC became the first large sports organization in the US to release their diversity data. The diversity and inclusion programs developed by Jason have won several awards at the local and international level. Most recently the D&I Scorecard developed by Jason received the top honor in the 2016 International Innovations in Diversity Awards program from the Profiles in Diversity Journal. Jason was also recognized as a 2017 and 2018 Diversity Leader by the Profiles in Diversity Journal. In 2015, the USOC D&I department received the Diversity Champion Award for Excellence from the Colorado SHRM. Jason has served on local, regional and national committees for multiple organizations, including the founding member of the Diversity and Inclusion Sports Consortium (DISC) one of the largest sports organizations in the US with participation by the NBA, NFL, MLB, PGA of America and the NCAA. He also works with Oklahoma Institute for Child Advocacy, Oklahoma Diversity Officers and Practitioners Consortium, and the Advisory Board and the Center for African-American Health. Thompson earned a master's and bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of Wyoming. Jason’s work has been highlighted and quoted in USAToday, Washington Post, CNN, The New York Times and The Guardian.
