What are the key leadership lessons from immersing in global cultures? 3. How can organisations foster curiosity and intercultural awareness in the workplace? 4. The Takeaway “SEL has five major components: self-awareness, self management, social management – the skills we use to manage relationships — and responsible decision making. There used to be this notion that you had your cognition — your rational side, your frontal brain — and you had your emotional side — you're limbic system — and they just fought for each other for dominance over decisions. But we now know that's not the case. Your emotions are deeply entwined with what you're paying attention to, how you're encoding information and memories. And your cognition is deeply entwined with how you're processing your emotions. And so this idea of the integration of social and emotional, and academic development is not just a catchphrase, it's really reflective of how we grow as human beings, incorporating and taking in cognition, emotion, as well as trying to solve problems.” — David Adams Our guest David Adams is the CEO of The Urban Assembly. He started with the UA in 2014 as the Director of Social-Emotional Learning. In 2021, David received the Champion of Equity Award from the American Consortium for Equity in Education. He is a Civil Affairs Officer in the Army Reserve and holds an M.Ed in Educational Psychology from Fordham University. As you listen Given COVID and the trauma that many students carry, how can we best help to heal them? What is social-emotional learning (SEL) and how is it used to support students? What makes human interactions so critical, and why are students having difficulty establishing relationships after COVID-19? How are academics and emotion intertwined to benefit students? How do SEL skills help the school community? "Diversity", "Equity", & "Inclusion" are seemingly separate principles. However, the terms have been lumped together, co-opted by an industry of professionals, and implanted bureaucratically in Corporate America. With expensive "DEI Consultants" renting themselves out to companies, and "DEI Executives" occupying lofty (and expensive) positions at major corporations, no one seemed to ever ask the question "Does any of this stuff actually work?". Conor Friedersdorf of The Atlantic has taken a deeper look at companies scrutinizing these programs (and personnel) and starting to wonder if they're getting their bang for their buck.  Learn more about your ad choices. In today's episode, I share conversation with David Adams, CEO of Urban Assembly, and definitely a BIG PICTURE kind of educator. In this conversation, David explains the how's and why's of Urban Assembly's approach to building schools' cultures, which are 100% centered on developing students' social emotional competencies for success in school, and for success in their future careers, and for success in their personal lives' moving forward. In other words, everything is connected, and Urban Assembly schools work with, and through, that fact of life…. which might, at first, look like more work for teachers, but give it time… and listen up… by the end of this one hour conversation, you'll understand why it actually means less work for teachers of all grade levels… K-12. In 2021, David received the Champion of Equity Award from the American Consortium for Equity in Education. David sits on the board of CASEL which, as I'm sure you know, stands for the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning. Karen has had an amazing career, from getting a job at ABC while in college and working hand in hand with Bob Iger who was an emerging leader at Disney, to an inspirational meeting with Barbara Walters, she shares stories we can all learn from. As an executive, she has worked across many areas of the entertainment industry, and now at WarnerMedia, she touches iconic brands such as CNN, Turner sports, Cartoon Network, and HBO and HBO, Max and Warner Brothers television, Warner Brothers films, Warner Brothers animation and Adult Swim - all with an eye on empowering diverse creators. Guest Bio Karen Horne Senior Vice President, Equity and Inclusion Programs WarnerMedia As a senior executive with over 20 years of experience in the entertainment industry, she has been recognized as a Diversity and Inclusion pioneer and pipeline builder. Since coming to WarnerMedia in March of 2020, Horne has been involved in creating and implementing multiple pipeline programs that aim to amplify the voices of underrepresented communities. These programs give talented individuals, who would otherwise not have the opportunity, access to the entertainment industry to showcase their talent. She has brought expertise gained from her career to create cohesive programs, ranging from entry-level to mid-career, that service the entire enterprise. These programs support expansion in areas that have not traditionally been serviced (i.e., virtual production, games, news and sports, animation, comedy, etc.). Before WarnerMedia, Horne was at NBC Entertainment and Universal Television Studios as Senior Vice President, Programming Talent Development and Inclusion where she was responsible for overseeing in-front-of and behind-the-camera primetime diversity efforts for NBC and Universal Television. While there, she started the Late-Night Writers Workshop in 2013 which changed the landscape of the writers' rooms by increasing the number of women and ethnically diverse men, both of which were lacking. Another extraordinary program she developed was Female Forward, which guaranteed shadowing directors an opportunity to direct an entire episode in addition to the traditional shadowing access. The programs and initiatives she created and/or developed became the industry's gold standard and a blueprint for many other companies. Her background in finding and developing new talent allows her great ease in working with the creative world, while her corporate upbringing and work with C-Suite executives allows her equal comfort in any board room. Horne has always been dedicated to increasing equity and inclusion in the entertainment industry throughout her career. She has been honored with several awards and recognitions for her diversity and inclusion work and her service to underrepresented communities. Horne serves on multiple industry boards and has spoken both nationally and internationally on diversity and inclusion best practices. She serves on the boards of Montclair State University's School of Communication and Media, USC's Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, The Alliance of Women Directors, RespectAbility, and The Urban League of the Greater San Francisco Bay Area. She is a member of several entertainment industry organizations. While the topic of diversity and inclusion (D&I) in the workplace is not new, the events of the past year have amplified the desire for employees and employers to create formalized D&I programs in the workplace. Though the motives for creating these programs may be well-intentioned, employers still need to understand certain guidelines before launching a D&I initiative, especially as the Biden administration modifies labor and employment regulations. Jackson Walker Labor & Employment attorneys Jamila Brinson and Michelle Miller discuss some of the basic issues for employers to know before creating a formal D&I program. Alexis Robertson is the Director of Diversity & Inclusion at Foley & Lardner LLP where she provides firm-wide strategic direction and oversight on all diversity and inclusion related matters. Alexis talks to us about her journey out of litigation to recruiting, and ultimately to diversity and inclusion work. We speak about the structural racism within our industry and the challenges law firms face in making meaningful progress on diversity and inclusion with respect not only to recruiting, but work allocation, mentorship, and professional development. Ultimately, Alexis tells us that the work begins at the individual level and challenges us to all do the hard, introspective work of examining our roles in perpetuating discrimination. Only then can we really effect the widespread changes needed in our firms, industry, and communities. We discuss: Try to identify your “through-line”, the thing that seems to pull you to your next step If you make a step, and realize it's still not a fit, just keep moving; it's not a sign of failure The pillars of diversity and inclusion (D&I) are recruiting, retention, and promotion “Best practices” is a tricky term because is can sometimes just mean “minimum baseline requirement” D&I can't be treated as a separate office; to be effective, its principles have to be at the core of every decision made This moment in history could be an opportunity to push firms to incorporate these policies/practices more pervasively Law firms fall on a spectrum of how deep this work goes; how committed they are to changing not only statistics, but their internal culture The practice of only hiring from the top law schools has the effect of eliminating a pipeline of strong candidates (many of whom are minorities) who have selected other law schools for financial, family, or other reasons  Firms are risk averse and not inclined towards early adoption; but someone has to start changing this limited hiring system Addressing affinity bias in work allocation, promotion, mentoring is key We each have to do real self reflection on our own implicit bias: who we interact with, what our hard-wired reactions are to people, etc. Get uncomfortable The challenge is to keep engaged with this work even though we don't “have to” We, as lawyers, need to put our money where I mouth is with our commitment to justice Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thelawyersescapepod/  Website: www.thelawyersescapepod.com
