“I did not see myself as a leader, to be honest. I had my mind made up on doing something else, but it has been an amazing journey,” says Dr. Tiffany Morris, director of Nursing at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. That journey includes being the inaugural department chair in the nursing program at Elon University School of Health Sciences and serving as an interim dean in North Carolina A&T's School of Nursing. She returned to North Carolina A&T earlier this year partly because of the larger impact she can have due to the school being the largest Historically Black College and University in the nation. “The opportunity to serve students who are normally underrepresented and be able to produce healthcare providers that look like the people that they're serving is an amazing opportunity,” she tells host Michael Carrese. Highlights of the curriculum include an accelerated nursing program which allows those with bachelor's degrees to earn an RN in twelve months, advanced simulation training -- including access to new 3D technology that allows for virtual dissection -- and an emphasis on providing culturally appropriate care, which Morris stresses goes well beyond race to include culturally-based food preferences and spiritual practices and beliefs. Morris has a research interest in the latter where she focuses on why African-Americans have a lower rate of hospice enrollment. Find out about one key factor in turning that around, why the university is pursuing R1 research status and new degree offerings coming soon.Mentioned in this episode: North Carolina A&T School of Nursing

Nursing program admission is highly competitive which is reason enough to investigate closely before applying to college so your teen is making informed decisions. In this episode, you'll learn about the different pathways to becoming a nurse, and what your family can be doing right now to secure a spot in this highly competitive and rigorous field of study.EPISODE NOTESInterest in nursing is sky-high, and as a result, institutions have become more and more selective in admitting students into their nursing programs. In this episode, Jon Rice shares the different pathways available to students who may be interested in pursuing a degree in this field.Jon works in admissions at the University of San Francisco, and he has a wealth of information on the ins and outs of what it takes to get into their coveted direct-entry program as well as other programs throughout the US. I really appreciated his take on the direct entry approach. I'll admit, I've often thought these types of programs seemed unnecessarily restrictive. But after hearing Jon's perspective, I can see how they actually help set students up for success right from the start. If your high school teen is confident that they want to pursue nursing, and they're already meeting the qualifications that these programs require, direct entry can be an excellent way to guarantee their success. But a direct entry program isn't the only path to a nursing career. Your student may choose to complete a pre-nursing program before entering an upper-division program. Or they may transfer credit from a community college or other four-year school to a nursing program. Jon gives us detailed insight into the pros and cons of several different approaches and paths to nursing. There's no denying that nursing studies are academically rigorous, and if your student is interested in this field, they will need to qualify in many different areas in order to get their foot in the door. However, this shouldn't discourage you from pressing forward. If your teen is on the path to becoming a nurse, this episode will give you the tools you need to start planning well in advance, so that they will be able to choose the right path for them when the time comes.Links mentioned in this episodeLaunch Career Clarity CourseLaunch College and Career Clarity Facebook CommunityList of Accredited Nursing ProgramsFirst-Year Nursing Admission at USFEmail Jon at jfrice@usfca.edu Timeline[3:10] Although direct entry is required at many schools, it's not intended to be restrictive. In our eighth episode, we learn about the Child Welfare Nursing program through a conversation with registered nurses and foster and adoptive mothers, Susan Oliver and Shelly Lee. This program supports child welfare workers by giving insight into complex medical conditions throughout the investigatory process to help staff make the best safety decisions possible. Nurses also support both biological and foster families with training and education related to the medical needs of children, increasing family stability and better long-term outcomes for the children involved. Susan Oliver is a Registered Nurse and mother to eight children. She has worked for OKDHS for the last eleven years, and, since the recording of this podcast, was named the Nursing Programs Administrator. While working for OKDHS, Susan worked on a collaborative project with Johns Hopkins University that integrated trauma-informed practices into outpatient medical clinics. In her spare time, Susan volunteers at Special Care, a child care program that serves children who are medically-fragile or who have disabilities. Shelly Lee is a Health Care Management Nurse III for Child Welfare Services, and assisted in developing the very program we're discussing today, which integrated Registered Nurses into Child Welfare. She was the first nurse hired as part of the program. She has been a nurse for 22 years and has six children with her husband of 21 years. Her family began fostering through a kinship placement in 2012, and quickly found that this was their calling. We hope you'll continue to join us on this podcast where we'll explore topics that affect and uplift Oklahomans. The College Metropolis Podcast: College Admissions Talk for High School Students and Parents
#045 – On this Midweek Episode Jankel and I begin the first career deep dive by focusing on Registered Nursing. We uncover important information that will give high school students a well-informed idea of all that entails earning a Bachelor's degree in Nursing, and working as a Registered Nurse (RN). In our conversation, we go over essential qualities that are necessary for a person interested in becoming an RN, the duties and responsibilities associated with this profession, the different patient groups with whom RNs may work, the educational path to follow to earn a BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) degree. Additionally, we explore the components of the typical Nursing Program pre-requisites and explore those of the undergraduate nursing program at Loma Linda University. We also discuss the NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination and other licensing requirements. The episode ends with a look at statistical data related to pay and employment prospects for registered nurses, and the five reasons why this profession is expected to grow at almost twice the percentage average of other professions. We hope this episode allows all high school students in our audience to gain an appreciation for this noble, stable, and much-needed occupation. We also hope it gives all parents in our audience important information they may use to have meaningful career-related conversations with their kids. These types of episodes will continue to be posted in the middle of the week, while our episodes related to college admissions will continue to appear on Fridays.
